Lasting Change offers inspired yet practical advice for those who seek to build organizations guided by a moral compass." - Dick Capen, author of Finishing Strong/Living the Values That Take You the Distance, former U.S. Ambassador to Spain and Publisher of the Miami Herald.

"The book is well written, straightforward, and no-nonsense. It holds your attention. It is a book I will certainly require in the MBA courses I teach." - Four-star general Warren D. Johnson, USAF (Ret.), Adjunct Professor, Wake Forest University.

It's a must read for entry-level neophytes and seasoned CEOs."- Harold Burson, Chairman, Burson-Marsteller.

"A great collection of anecdotes and experiences that will help a manager develop into a leader.

                Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Wow. This is really a bad book........2007-04-10

                No seriously.
I had the highest expectation for this experience. But the story is a mess.
It's episodic to the point of distraction. The point of view changes randomly. At one point it's a confession, or a "verbal account". Then it is a written account from a character hardly seen in the first 70% of the story. To say the characters are weakly developed is an insult to...uh...weak people. The language is occasionally witty, but often repetitive and uninteresting.
The best part of the novel is the epilogue, which gives details of the Phantom's origins, all of which are FAR more interesting than the contents of the book. I also loved a bit about the real Opera House that came with my Easton Press copy.
I loved the stage musical, I loved the old films, I liked the new film...this was extremely disappointing.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent story.......2007-03-08

This is a very gripping, interesting story. I would especially recommend it to "Phantom" fans who would like to learn the background of the characters.

                5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2007-02-18

Often times mentioning "The Phantom of the Opera" ellicits snickers from theatre purists who see the musical as a somewhat ridiculously overblown slightly stupid story which all seems too far fetched to be taken seriously. I confess, I first fell in love with the story when I saw Andrew Lloyd Webber's rendition of the show (which I've seen about five times now) - a show which I now realize that if taken by itself, tends to be a somewhat ridiculously overblown slightly stupid story which seems too far fetched to be taken seriously. The original book changes everything.

Not only does the book contain the story of Erik, the Opera Ghost, but it also includes some of Leroux's own research into the story which he claims as true. Not only does he make this somewhat extrodinary claim to the truth of the story, but he in rather fine detail shows how there was really nothing supernatural at all about the story: even the seeming supernatural elements all have simple solutions: many of which Leroux himself found the 'keys' to while doing research for the book.

The book blows the musical away. Like sand-blasting a soup craker. But before I say more I will say that the musical picks up on many of the important parts of the book: that is to say, I would recommend reading the book and getting to know the story well, because then even though the musical only picks up on many of the important parts and not all, you'll know the rest of the story: and suddenly the musical won't be a somewhat ridiculously overblown slightly stupid story which seems too far fetched to be taken seriously - it's actually very believable.

Admittedly, it would have been far too difficult to make the entire story into a musical: but let me whet your appetite for the fuller details of this incredible love story by touching on a few of the most important difference between the book and the musical.

                1. One of the most important characters from the book is gone from the musical. The very mysterious character called simply "The Persian" is not only Erik's one confidant in the book, but he also serves as a link between Erik and other people involved in the Opera. In the musical, Madam Giry represents both her role in the book, and The Persian. (I.e., in the musical, Madam Giry leads Raoul down to Erik's home under the Opera House: in the book, it's actually The Persian who does).

                2. There is yet another character, simply called "A Shade" who also appears breifly in the book...a brief part, but actually quite dark.

                3. Erik's brilliance as a ventriloquist is lost in the musical but fully explained and examined in the book

                4. The most intriging part of the book, Erik's six-mirrored 'tourture chamber' - a major part of the story and a powerful demonstration of Erik's brilliance as a fearsome foe is completely missing from the musical.

This is easily my favourite book that I've ever read, and I recommend it to people all the time. Read it and enjoy it!

                4 out of 5 stars Help.......2007-01-10

This answers things I did not understand from the movie. It is hard to imagine how ugly the Phantom is supposed to be because there is no way to Make Gerard Butler ugly. The problem with a handsom, sexy Phantom is that it is hard to understand why Christine didn't chose him. But the book does show the Phantom's great love for Christine. The story is hard to follow sometimes but hang in there because it is a fairly good story.

                5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-01-06

Since I was about 6 years old, I've had all the music memorized from the broadway musical 'Phantom of the Opera', and maybe a year or two later I saw the silent version of the film... terrifying! I think that the phantom from the silent film lived under my bed for several years.... he still might, and maybe a year or two after that I saw the version with Nelson Eddy in it.But when I finally got around to reading this book just this year, I was astounded! I didn't expect for it to be such a good read... it was a page-turner, and I already knew the outcome! As I turned every page, I kept saying to myself: why haven't I ever read this before? I was so pleasantly surprised by this book. So this is why they call it a classic...

                      3 out of 5 stars Hearts Divided.......2006-02-09

*** In this sweet little story collection, past and present are bridged by a common thread of love and revealed secrets. Granddaughters learn lessons about love from their grandmothers' recollections of the past, of loves they had in the WW II era. The stories are connected by email messages between the three grandmothers, but they do have a common theme. Debbie Macomber's entry that opens the anthology is the strongest of the three, however, each one is a sweet, safe read for book lovers of all ages to enjoy. ***

                      3 out of 5 stars Not bad..........2006-02-07

Of the three stories, I enjoyed the one by Katherine Stone the best. It was very sweet and the characters were cute. The bit about the grandmother's eyesight seemed sort of random, though... kind of like the author wanted to just throw in some information that people should know about cataracts.
The story by Debbie Macomber sort of seemed... a little dated, I guess. As I read it, I sort of wondered if it had been written years ago and was being republished, with a few updates to accomodate for technological advances (cell phones, email). It was just an impression I got from the characters, I think.
I have no real complains about the Lois Faye Dyer story. It was fine.
All in all, an okay book, but not a keeper.

Jake meets English Professor Chloe Abbott whose group the Seattle's Women's Club has donated much of the medical equipment. They are attracted to one another form the start, but someone with a grudge plans to use her as a throw away pawn to get at Jake.

"The Apple Orchard" by Lois Faye Dyer. In Sarah's Orchard, Washington though he knows he will be punished by his mother's latest boyfriend, Nick rescues the toddler. Elizabeth's grandparents Charles and Clara are grateful. Years later, an adult Nick returns to Sarah's Orchard where to his shock Clara knows him instantly as Elizabeth's hero. He stays there basking in the grandparent-like love of Charles and Clara. When Charles dies he remains there for Clara. When Elizabeth returns home, she and her hero fall in love but he keeps his military experience secret from her so she has doubts.

These three terrific Washington State novellas star heroic military men and realistic women with doubts about a relationship with a soldier/veteran. The key to the tales is that diverse opinions on the Global War Against Terrorism is treated with respect and not wrapped inside phony for or against patriotic fervor while honoring the soldier.

Say what you will about the author, this is one story that practically tells itself. The entire Bokassa saga is so fundamentally bizarre, one needs to do little more than list the events in order to create a memorable story.

Bokassa's coronation in 1976 was truly one of the strangest events to ever come out of a continent plagued by strangeness. Brian Titley describes the awkward climax of Bokassa's career in excellent detail, cataloguing the thousands of pounds of champagne and food that was shipped in from the finest caterers in France, the elaborate robes and jewelry that were handcrafted for the event, and the meager guest list, with the Prime Minister of tiny Mauritius being the only guest of any significance.

The whole thing is truly one of the most fascinating stories I have read in a long time. With so much literature written about China, America, the USSR et al, it can sometimes be a refreshing break to read about a tiny nation's isolated history.

I have always been interested in the Central African Republic, and since I don't speak French, it is hard to find material on it-so I was very pleased to find a book like this. The Bokassa saga, shows that truth can be stranger than fiction. After all, if the average American turned on the television special featuring a country called the 'Central African Republic', where the ruler converts at will, stages a coronation in the style of Napoleon, and has a harem of wives from throughout the world-chosen at will, they would dismiss it as a fiction.
Yet it was not, Bokassa and many other tyrants were supported by nations seeking to play their role in the Cold War.
It reminds me of Heart of Darkness, which took place in what is now, CAR's neighbor, Congo, formerly Zaire. While, I admire Titley's attempt to try be factual and trace the story in terms of politics and recorded intrigues. But there is little oral testimony, or information on the local culture and sociology.
This is a shame, because I think this story, or could been on par with chronicles such as Killing Fields, and this lacks the side of the victim. Also, Titley never address the brutalities, frankly, any nonacademic who is reading this wants to be titilated by the accusations of cannabalism and torture-and this issues are not addressed at all-neither dismissed or denied, or resolved. Also, the AUTHOR has access to Bokassa's autobiogaphy [of which all but 2 copies still exist] and it is rarely mentioned. All in all, it is not easy to have written this book, the topic carries the day, but I can't help feeling that this has the taste of an incomplete academic lecture series, that could have used an editor and some pungency.

                      5 out of 5 stars Splendid Book!.......2001-01-04

This is a most interesting book about one of Africa's most extravagant leaders. Brian Titley does not write with particular elegance or wit, but his account of Bokassa's life seems well documented, even-handed and is thoroughly readeable. The details on the coronation ceremonies or the emperor's love life alone are worth the reading. A five star book on a five star general.

4 out of 5 stars Killer or clown?.......2000-08-22

Brian Titley's account of the life of Jean Bedel Bokassa, self-proclaimed Emperor of the Central African Republic, is an unsettling one.

On the one hand, the personal detail that the author builds up on his subject can paint a fascinating and sometimes engaging picture of the Emperor.

After all, Bokassa was the dictator whose behavior was said to cause embarrassment even to other African despots. A caricature figure, who had warned senior government colleagues on different occasions that he was "properly annoyed" and was thinking of "going for a coup d'etat", he rose to power from an impoverished rural background.

As Emperor, however, he was the giver of envelopes of diamonds to visiting dignitaries; the collector and wearer of a huge collection of period-piece French military uniforms and the unrepentant womanizer who accumulated wives from countries as far distant as Romania and Vietnam.

With his subject never too far from the ridiculous, Titley dredges up some fantastic narrative. Even the photographs tell a story - an image on an early page of the book pictures Bokassa together with his favourite young son on the day of the imperial coronation. Africa's Napoleon, resplendent in a velvet robe, is desperately seeking a regal pose. His son, then aged about six, sits sulkily beside his father, his tasseled white sailor suit topped off with a captain's cap at least three sizes too big for him. He looks like he has rushed straight to the ceremony from an audition for the Jackson Five.

On the other hand - and this is the problem for the reader - much of this colour surrounding Bokassa turns out to be dark and foreboding. Although his alleged taste for human flesh has never been fully proven (nor his preference for the throwing of those that displeased him into his swimming pool of crocodiles) his regime was responsible for the torture and death of hundreds of his countrymen. He personally caved in the skulls of some of them with his favourite walking cane.

Can you enjoy a man's more attractive idiosyncracies when his darker ones include participation in the torture of schoolchildren? Titley does try, in an excellent concluding chapter, to put Bokassa into a political context. He killed fewer people than Dictator X. He stole and extorted less money than Dictator Y. He was aided, encouraged and manipulated by the French throughout his period in power. He lived the closing years of his life in (for him) relative poverty and isolation, deserted by his wives and children. He even chose to return from exile to his native country and face state trial.

More opportunities for the reader to adopt an ambivalent attitude to Africa's Napoleon? Probably not. Bokassa's expressions of remorse seem to have been limited to his sense of personal misfortune. And if we are to be asked to judge him less harshly only against a backdrop of more dangerous and more evil men, then we must ask ourselves if Bokassa may, after all, be deserving of the company that he keeps

                        Book Description

A memoir of the ambitious life and controversial political career of Louisiana governor Henry Clay Warmoth (1842-1931), War, Politics, and Reconstruction is a firsthand account of the political and social machinations of Civil War America and the war's aftermath in one of the most volatile states of the defeated Confederacy.

At the onset of the Civil War, Warmoth, an Illinois native, traded his district attorney appointment for a colonel's commission in the Union army. He was wounded at Vicksburg in May 1863 and, while on leave, was dishonorably discharged by General U. S. Grant for being absent without leave and for circulating reports of exaggerated Union losses. He fought the discharge and was restored to his rank by an executive order from President Abraham Lincoln.

Warmoth arrived in Louisiana in 1864 as part of the federal occupation forces. Upon leaving military service in 1865, he established himself in private legal practice in New Orleans. Taking full advantage of the chaotic times, Warmoth rapidly amassed fortune and influence, and soon emerged as a leader of the state's Republican Party and, in 1868, was elected governor. Amid an administration rife with scandal and corruption, the Louisiana Republican Party broke into warring factions. Warmoth survived an impeachment attempt in 1872, but a second attempt in 1873 culminated with his removal from office. This fall from Republican grace stemmed from his allegiance with white conservatives, remnants of the old guard, and staunch opponents of those Republicans who sought a wider role for African Americans in Louisiana's changing political landscape.

Though he never again held political office, Warmoth remained in his adopted Louisiana, enjoying the fruits of his investments in plantations and sugar refineries. In 1930, the year before his death, he published War, Politics, and Reconstruction, a vindication of his public life and a rebuttal of his reputation as an opportunistic carpetbagger of the highest order. Despite Warmoth's obvious self-serving biases, the volume offers unparalleled depth of personal insight into the inner workings of Reconstruction government in Louisiana in the words of one of its key architects.

A new introduction by John C. Rodrigue places Warmoth's memoir within the broader context of evolving perceptions and historiography of Reconstruction. Rodrigue also offers readers a more balanced portrait of Warmoth by providing supplemental information omitted or slighted by the author in his efforts to cast his actions in the most positive light.

Perhaps no other figure so personifies the full spectrum of political belief in America as Max Lerner. A Marxist in his youth, a neoconservative in his dotage, Lerner wrote for publications as diverse as the tabloid New York Post, the progressive The Nation, and the titillating Playboy. But no matter how high-, middle-, or low-brow the medium, his ideas were always provocative. Born at the start of the 20th century, Lerner lived through cataclysmic times, and in Max Lerner: Pilgrim in the Promised Land, biographer Sanford Lakoff tries to chronicle both his subject's life and the evolution of his intellect.

As Lakoff points out in his preface, Lerner was something of a maverick, embracing both the sexual revolution of the '60s and '70s and the conservative politics of the '80s, and guided by the words of Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes: "As life is action and passion, it is required of a man that he should share the passion and action of his time at peril of being judged not to have lived." Certainly no one can accuse Lerner of not living, as his close friendship with Hugh Hefner, two marriages, six children, and many rewarding careers as teacher, critic, and philosopher amply attest. But Lakoff is equally intrigued by his subject's life of the mind and his discussions of Lerner's gradual metamorphosis from left- to right-wing gadfly are particularly interesting.

                              Book Description

Max Lerner was a gifted writer and educator whose passion for life made him anything but an ivory tower recluse. In public a prominent commentator and college professor, in his private life he was a romantic adventurer, pursuing erotic relationships with unflagging zeal. He had two marriages (and six children) and became a close friend and frequent guest of Hugh Hefner at the Playboy Mansion West. One of his liaisons was with Elizabeth Taylor—who fondly referred to him as "my little professor." Max Lerner recounts the life and times of this fascinating figure of "the American century."

Politically, Lerner went through a series of metamorphoses. During the 1930s, he was an anti-fascist "popular front progressive" writing for the Nation and the New Republic. From the 1940s through the 1970s, he became the country's leading liberal columnist—first with the lively but short-lived PM, then for the New York Post. In the 1980s, however, he was repelled by the New Left and the counterculture and joined the ranks of the neoconservatives, scandalizing some readers but insisting he owed it to them to tell the truth as he saw it.

This riveting biography begins with Lerner's own gripping account of the hardships his family endured in emigrating from Russia and his own boyhood triumphs and frustrations. Sanford Lakoff traces Lerner's American pilgrimage from his education at Yale, where he felt the bitter sting of anti-Semitism, through his years as a radical inspired by Thorstein Veblen, into mellower maturity as a widely read columnist, an inspiring teacher, the author of America as a Civilization, a much-loved father, and—to the end—an unapologetic romantic, who liked to say that he never learned anything worth knowing except from women.

5 out of 5 stars Tragedy to Triumph...a story of heart determination & love.......1999-04-23

Karen's story of her rehab, recovery, and amazing strength inspire us all. She is a true hero. A touching and heart-wrenching story told in her own words hits home and reminds you of whats really important in life. A great friend, person, athlete, and author tells her story of overcoming all odds and surviving. The only thing better is Karen herself.

5 out of 5 stars very interesting book - highs and lows of recovering.......1998-04-08

Karen's book shows us the difficulties of rehabilitation, and finding knowledgeable professional treatment in this field. It was interesting to learn how family and friend relationships are affected by these accidents

                                  5 out of 5 stars A Heart-Warming, Inspirational Message of Finding Hope.......1997-12-22

This book is very well written. The author expresses her deepest emotions as she relays the story of her journey of recovery from a traumatic brain injury. I cried, laughed, felt as though on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. I couldn't put the book down. It was a heart-warming experience to read how an individual overcomes tragedy and turns it into an opportunity to reach out and help others. Her faith in God surely carried her through this journey, com- forting and protecting her, even when she was on the edge of giving up. This book is as inspirational as any of the Joni Erickson books I have read. The message is clear...there is always hope.
