This "idiot's guide" is aptly named.......2004-06-07

The premise of this book is that all managers are sadistic and power-hungry, that all employees are industrious peak performers hamstrung by their incompetent bosses, and that supervisors ought to simply wake up and realize this. Because of this simplistic attitude toward the subject matter, this guide truly is for idiots. A very naive approach to the topic, and probably written by authors who have had a lot more experience as consultants than as managers. Also the text is heavily laden with "really cool" marketing-type lingo. Hey, we already bought the book, okay! (Don't rub it in! ) A waste of time and money.

In the ancient world, the collection and study of celestial phenomena and the intepretation of their prophetic significance, especially as applied to kings and nations, were closely related sciences carried out by the same scholars. Both ancient sources and modern research agree that astronomy and celestial divination arose in Babylon. Only in the late nineteenth century, however, did scholars begin to identify and decipher the original Babylonian sources, and the process of understanding those sources has been long and difficult.

This volume presents recent work on Babylonian celestial divination and on the Greek inheritors of the Babylonian tradition. Both philological and mathematical work are included. The essays shed new light on all of the known textual sources, including the omen series Enuma Anu Enlil, which contains omens from as far back as the early second or even third millennium, and the earliest personal horoscopes, from about 400 B.C., as well as the Astronomical Diaries, ephemerides, and other observational and mathematical texts. One essay concerns astronomical papyri that confirm the extensive transmission of Babylonian methods into Greek; a study of Ptolemy's lunar theory suggests that Ptolemy relied more on his own observations than previously thought; and an analysis of Theon's commentary on Ptolemy's Handy Tables shows that Theon explicated their meaning both conscientiously and competently.

Book Description

Professor van den Bosch of the University of California was one of the developers of Integrated Pest Management--the use of biological controls, improved pest knowledge and observation, and judicious application of chemicals only when absolutely necessary. His research often suggested that less or no pesticides should be applied, which made him the target of both open and clandestine attack from industry and government figures. In protest, he wrote this passionate account of what Ecology called "the ultimate social disaster of: evolving pesticide-resistant insects, the destruction of their natural predators and parasites, emergent populations of new insect pests, downstream water pollution, atmospheric pollution, the 'accidental' killing of wildlife and people, and the bankruptcies of indigenous and small farmers."
As a new Introduction to this edition recounts, some lessening of dangerous overreliance on massive pesticide applications has been achieved since van den Bosch published this book in 1978--partly as a result of its influence. But the structural problems he described remain. The book has thus become a classic, along with Rachel Carson's Silent Spring.

the book started off a little too slow for me but the end is well worth the read. i liked it because it had a twist. i hope part 2 to the book doesn't start off slow but im definitely looking forward to the second part.

From the first page to the last i never gave up hope on Dutch. For each page i read i felt like i was right there. I felt happy, sad, angry, hungry and full all at the same time.As long as Teri keeps writing i will keep reading.

This book really captured the trials and trumphs it take to be a strong entrepreneur. Each entreprener was challenged to compete with the big boys of their industries and did it with grace and style.
