            Book Description

Seeking to assist professionals and care providers looking to develop culturally-based techniques for the care of dementia-afflicted elders, this book first presents the need for culturally sensitive care, and then describes how this method of care may be utilized, developed, approved, and evaluated. The book includes numerous case studies, and highlights the authors' model.; Dealing with facets of intercultural practice, Part 1 of the text centres around the professional or provider already engaged or seeking to engage in day-to-day contact with ethnically diverse clientele. The emphasis is on highlighting those skills which serve the practitioner to establish intercultural rapport on their daily cross- ethnic assignments. The central tenet of this section is that the worker's attention has to be on maintaining both the dementia-affected elders' and the ethnic family members' cultural dignity.

              Book Description

Since the last joint IAU and COSPAR Colloquium in Gainesville in 1995, there have been dramatic changes in the field resulting from in-situ space experiments, Earth orbiting satellites and ground based observations. The brightest comet since the early years of the twentieth century, comet Hale-Bopp, appeared, giving an invaluable opportunity to see in action one great source of interplanetary dust. Similarly, the Leonid meteor shower has been at its most active since 1966, producing spectacular displays of meteors and allowing for an array of observational techniques, not available in 1966 to be used, while theory has also been refined to a level where very accurate predictions of the timing of meteor storms has become possible. Prior to the meeting a total eclipse of the Sun in South West England and North Europe was observed, traditionally a good opportunity to observe the Zodiacal cloud. The knowledge of the Near-Earth Asteroid population has also increased dramatically, with the increased study arising from the heightened awareness of the danger to Earth from such bodies. Extrasolar planets have been discovered since the last meeting and it is recognised that interplanetary dust in other Planetary Systems can now be studied. Since much of the dust observed in such systems is at a distance of order 100 AU from the star, this brings into focus the production of dust in the Edgeworth-Kuiper belt of our own system. Recent years have seen a recognition of the importance of dust originating outside our own system, that is now present in the near-Earth environment. As is always the case when great strides take place observationally, much theoretical work follows, and the same is true in this instance. While data about the planetary medium from Venus to Jupiter was beginning to be available at the meeting in 1995, the data from both Galileo and Ulysses have now been more fully analysed, with a corresponding increase in our knowledge.
This book reflects the thematic approach adopted at the meeting, with a flow outwards (from meteors in the atmosphere, through zodiacal dust observation and interplanetary dust, to extra solar planetary systems) and returning (via the Edgeworth-Kuiper belt and comets) to the Earth, with laboratory studies of physical and chemical processes and the study of extra-terrestrial samples.

More than 30 years after its apparition this book still remains valid. It is focused in the Paranthropus robustus specimens from South Africa. The text is pure narrative. The conclusions are interesting and display awesome pictures from the fossils. The book is well structured and is comprehensible for any student of the human evolution. If you are working and/or studying in the field of the human evolution, you must own it.

The product of an agreeably dotty cleric named Edwin Abbott Abbott and first published in 1884, Flatland distills all that the Victorian era knew of higher mathematics--and then some--into a witty, complex novel of ideas.

Ian Stewart, the author of the equally witty sequel, Flatterland--which adds to Abbott's store of science the key discoveries made since--does a superb job of explaining the original book's enigmas, allusions, ironies, implausibilities, and what Douglas Hofstadter would call "metamagical themas." Among other things, Stewart comments on Abbott's comments on such things as the nature/nurture controversy, the fourth dimension and beyond, the role of multidimensional spaces in economic systems, infinite series and perfect squares, celestial mechanics, and other matters close to the hearts of cosmologists and science buffs alike.

Stewart's notes make an entertaining and learned addition to an already classic bit of writing--one that has never been out of print since its first publication. For both devoted Abbott fans and newcomers to his work, this is the edition to have. --Gregory McNamee

                            Book Description

The first-ever annotated edition of the beloved classic, beautifully illustrated and brilliantly brought to life for a new generation of readers.

Flatland is a unique, delightful satire that has charmed readers for over a century. Published in 1884 by the English clergyman and head-master Edwin A. Abbott, it is the fanciful tale of A. Square, a two-dimensional being who is whisked away by a mysterious visitor to The Land of Three Dimensions, an experience that forever alters his worldview. By contemplating the notion of dimensions beyond their own, Abbott's Victorian readers were exposed to the then-radical idea of a fourth dimension-preparing them for Einstein's spectacular theories of relativity.

Like the book itself, Ian Stewart's commentary takes readers on a strange and wonderful journey. With clarity and wit, Stewart illuminates Abbott's numerous Victorian references, weaves in little-known biographical information about Abbott and his intellectual circle-elucidating Abbott's remarkable connections to H. G. Wells and the mathematician George Boole-and traces the scientific evolution of geometric forms and dimensions. In addition, Stewart provides an extensive bibliography of Abbott's work and that of Charles Howard Hinton, whose wild but ingenious speculations about the fourth dimension undoubtedly inspired Abbott's fable. Touching on such diverse topics as ancient Babylon, Karl Marx, the Indian Mutiny of 1857, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, the Gregorian calendar, Mount Everest, and phrenology, Stewart makes fascinating connections between Flatland and Edwin A. Abbott's life and times. The result is a classic to rival Abbott's own, and a book that will inspire and delight curious readers for generations to come.

A wonderful little fantasy tale that explains mathematical concepts of dimensions from the point of view of a 2-dimensional world. It is a fun way to introduce others (notably children) to the wonder of mathematics and the joy of discovery.

5 out of 5 stars Combines math with magic and fun!.......2006-06-20

With the Alice in Wonderland books, the late 1800s seem to have been the time for really creative mathemetical writing.

Although not as frequently read, Flatland, the Edwin Abbott Abbott story of a little square coming to understanding that higher dimensions do indeed exist outside his world is a delightful read. For those seeking to understand what life is like in other dimensions, Flatland is very comprehensible with clear writing and simple, easy to understand illustrations that help drive home Abbott's points.

Originally written with many sly references to the then existing state of British culture, Abbott's invitation to try and understand higher dimensions was also an invitation to society of his time to try to re think its views on a myriad of issues...including its openness to women in education.

In this way, Abbott converted viewing higher dimensions into both a mathematical and social challenge...points Stewart was sensitive to in his annotations and his own homage, Flatterland.

Although other editions of this work exist, the annotated Flatland is the one to buy both because of its faithful reproduction of the original and its thought provoking and helpful footnotes that give the work broader meaning.

1 out of 5 stars The Taliban treat women better than this man.......2006-02-13

If you want to make a young budding girl scientist feel really bad about herself and teach her not to trust men who teach math, this is the perfect book. This author describes women as one-dimensional. The Taliban treated women horrendously but they didn't kick them out of the human race. Flatland basically kicks women out of the human race. This is NOT GIRL FRIENDLY. If you give this to a girl who likes math, there's a good chance she could decide she hates math after reading this.

                            5 out of 5 stars A true classic!.......2004-06-13

Written over a hundred years ago, this book by Edwin A. Abbott is still by far the best introduction to the mathematics of many dimensions. This does not mean that it is a college-text-type of math books that contain complicated derivations and proofs. It is a novel. Ian Stewart's commentary makes it even easier to understand. Even the appendix written by Stewart is a valuable read which gives a brief intro to 4-dimensional mathematics.

5 out of 5 stars A book for all philosophy fans.......2003-09-09

I understand this book was written by a mathematician and possesses a juvenalian look at Victorian satire- but this book is so much more!! It is philosophy embedded in delicious metaphor and social commentary threaded in the tapestry of extended metaphor. And who said math was boring? This book is a must for every intellectual!!

                              Book Description

This newly-revised title clearly explains the major changes that have recently been made to the nation's bankruptcy laws. Specific changes will prevent people from eliminating credit card debt and other unsecured loans by filing for bankruptcy under Chapter 7, and forcing them to file under Chapter 13, a court-supervised repayment plan. In addition, while not totally eliminating the homestead exemption, there will be a cap on the amount that can be sheltered in a bankruptcy filing.

This new edition explains in simple language: € What bankruptcy is € How bankruptcy works € How to analyze your finances € What property you can keep € How to deal with creditors

A new glossary, appendix with valuable web site information, state-by-state exemptions and easy-to-use, blank tear-out forms make this book the most current product available.

                              Book Description

John Dewey’s best-known and still-popular classic, Democracy and Education, is presented here as a new edition in Volume 9 of the Middle Works. Sidney Hook, who wrote the introduction to this volume, describes Democracy and Education: “It illuminates directly or indirectly all the basic issues that are central today to the concerns of intelligent educators. . . . It throws light on several obscure corners in Dewey’s general philosophy in a vigorous, simple prose style often absent in his more technical writings. And it is the only work in any field originally published as a textbook that has not merely acquired the status of a classic, but has become the one book that no student concerned with the philosophy of education today should leave unread.” Dewey said in 1930 that Democracy and Education, “was for many years the one [book] in which my philosophy . . . was most fully expounded.”

                              5 out of 5 stars Dewey's social & moral philosophy.......2005-07-02

John Dewey's writing style will never set the world of letters ablaze, though there are a few of us who actually like his ordinary, Yankee prose. But you've got to be prepared for this if you're going to attempt to penetrate his thought.

With that said, this is not a bad place to start for someone looking to get into Dewey's thought. Although counted as part of his "middle" period, it nevertheless represents his mature thought on the connection between moral thought, educational policy, the democratic ideal, and the theory of inquiry. As such, there is a great deal going on and the patient reader is rewarded with an extraordinary range of relational connections which Dewey's prose -- since it is as lacking in style and extravagant rhetoric as possible -- might easily disguise by its superficial ordinariness.

Democracy, for Dewey, is nothing so simplistic as just the franchise, and education is nothing so brutal as schooling. The ideal of democracy is that of the maximization of opportunities for human growth, opportunities which can only manifest themselves in a community that shares in the ideals of personal and social growth. Education, on the other hand, is more or less the same thing as human growth. It is intrinsically moral, and is only possible in a context of free, intelligent inquiry. Hence, education is the foundation of democracy, and democracy is the manifestation of a durable educational ideal. (Schooling, on the other hand, is often enough the place where the entrenched powers of society strangle inquiry, and obliterate education for the sake of conformity and regimented training.)

It is worth mentioning that this volume, as part of the Collected Works, includes important critical essays and editorial matter from top Dewey scholars. Consequently, even if you have, or can get, an older edition of this book, it is well worth your trouble to choose this edition instead.

I find most philosophical writings to be boring, impenetrable, and/or too theoretical and abstract, but this book was fascinating. Dewey's philosophy is a living, breathing analysis of human life in an ever-changing world, in a capitalist democracy, in a specific culture and family. This work is inspiring and useful for educators, policy-makers and anyone who wishes to live in a more engaged and meaningful manner.

I don't think there is a better introduction to John Dewey available. This great book traces the intellectual development of every major aspect of Dewey's thought in thoughtful detail - his metaphysics, his psychology, his thought on education and democracy, his aesthetic theory. It gives a reader a full overview of Dewey's thought in their historical and intellectual context and leaves him with a sense of the greatness (and present relevance) of Dewey as a thinker. Ive gone on to read several of Dewey's works since because of the interest stirred by this book. I would get a copy soon before it goes out of print

Robert Westbrook's intellectual biography is one of the very best studies on Dewey's life and work. In my view, it's more balanced and carefully researched than Alan Ryan's "John Dewey and the High Tide of American Liberalism", the most obvious competing book. What Westbrook achieves is a happy combination of historical research and insightful theoretical analysis. And that's what any intellectual biography is all about, right? In a nutshell: this book is definitely worth buying if you are interested in expanding your knowledge on Dewey.

                                  Book Description

Americans live in a liberal democracy. Yet, although democracy is widely touted today, liberalism is scorned by both the right and the left. The United States stands poised between its liberal democratic tradition and the illiberal alternatives of liberalism's critics. In an engaging and informative discussion, McGowan offers a ringing endorsement of American liberalism's basic principles, values, and commitments. He explains that the liberalism of the founders distributed power widely in order to limit the power any one entity could exercise over others. Their aim was to provide for all an effective freedom that combined the right to self-determination with the ability to achieve one's self-chosen goals. In tracing this history, McGowan offers a clear vision of liberalism's foundational values as America's best guarantee today of liberty and the peace in which to exercise it.

This book brought back memories of my past childhood. I was very excitied to see my father mentioned in the book. I think my cousin has done a wonderful job in the research and writing of this book. I am very proud of him.

                                        4 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL BOOK!.......1999-03-13

Edward Lepoma has written a wonderful book, well researched and beautifully written. At last we know the influences that shaped Mary Mahoney into the great person she was. It was obviously written by someone who understood Mary but who was not blind to her faults.

4 out of 5 stars TRUE PICTURE OF A GREAT LADY.......1999-02-23

I am a long time friend of the author and became acquainted with Mary Mahoney and her restaurant through him. Mary was indeed larger than life and the author has captured this in his book. This is an excellent biography. It is well researched and presents a true picture of a great lady, warts and all. Mary was loyal to her heritage, friends, family, city and her religion. She is still sorely missed as hostess, friend and benefactor by everyone she touched in her joyful life. You will laugh and you will cry as you read this book.

4 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT READ.......1999-02-19

This is an excellent book for anyone who is interested in fine dining and remarkable personalities. The author has extensively researched his subject and presented the biography in an easy, readable style. It also gives an insight into the culture and customs of the American Gulf Coast from Alabama to Louisiana with its French Catholic heritage. The restaurant recipes alone are worth the price of the book.

                                        3 out of 5 stars Masterfully Researched.......1999-02-12

I rated this book 3 stars (rather than 5) because the subject matter is of regional, rather than national, interest. I read the book with great interest because I am a writer too and was astounded (and a little envious) of the painstaking research, including dozens of personal interviews, the author completed. The quality of his research gives this book a wealth of authentic detail.

                                            Book Description

Books by Western specialists have compiled many observations and facts about the "headhunters of Borneo," but the culture has never before been described from the inside, by an indigenous person born and reared in the rain forest listening to the stories and legends of her tribe. In this vivid memoir, Riska Orpa Sari tells us about the remote village of her birth, where rice is cultivated by cutting and burning the rain forest, where hunting and gathering take place under its dark canopy. She describes courtship and marriage, funeral rites, the sound headhunters make before they strike, the impact of the logging industry on the Dayak way of life, and the centrality of the river to all aspects of daily living. As Riska's marvelous story unfolds, a witty, intelligent personality is revealed, endearing, resilient, and dedicated to the preservation of her people.
