This text is a marvelous book for students trying to get a handle on all of the pressures of college life - setting goals, learning to study, knowing who you are and where you're going. The language is simple, inviting and straightforward.

Green leaves of Albizia gummifera G.F. Gmel, Milletia ferruginea (Hochst.) Baker, Cordia africana Lam., and Croton macrostachyus Del. were collected from trees growing in fields in southern Ethiopia, and used in laboratory and field experiments. The aim was to investigate differences in C mineralization parameters related to differences in the leaf qualities of the respective species, and to examine effects of amending soil (Mollic Andosols) with leaves plus N, P, or N+P on decomposition and microbial activity. Rates of carbon mineralization were determined by measuring CO"2 evolution using an automated respirometer (Respicond V) in the laboratory and an infrared gas analyser in the field studies. When no nutrients were added about 11-44% and 10-42%, on average, of the initial C applied as leaves was mineralized within a month in the laboratory and field respiration experiments, respectively. In both experiments, the rates of C mineralization were highest for C. macrostachyus leaves, followed by M. ferruginea then A. gummifera and lowest for C. africana leaves. Hence the results of our short-term laboratory study agreed well with those of the field experiment. Microbial activity (e.g. specific growth rate) was generally stimulated by supplemental nutrients. However, in most cases cumulative C mineralization was either slightly depressed or not significantly affected by supplemental N or N+P. Similarly, P addition caused either a reduction in C mineralization or had little effect. Hence the quality of the leaves was more influential than the nutrient additions. The absence of a pronounced respiratory response to the added N and/or P might be due to increased microbial C-use efficiency, to adequate amounts of these nutrients being available from the leaves and/or soil, or both. Further in-depth studies using soils of differing soil fertility are needed to test these hypotheses.

Spectacular; a hilarious tour-de-force.......2006-08-10

There are already some great reviews of this book here. Suffice it to say that "The Sot-Weed Factor" is a bona fide riot and one of the five or so novels I'd choose to be stranded with on a desert island. To think Barth was in his twenties when he wrote it is bewildering, so proficient is the language, so deep the erudition, and so scathing the satire.

I laughed aloud repeatedly during the reading of this book; the mind-boggling plot will keep you on your toes and guessing. Potential readers should not be dissuaded by its bulk, because I doubt there has ever been a 756-page novel that moves so quickly. Ebenezer's transformation from innocent dandy into disillusioned anti-hero is stunning both for its humor and its truthfulness. The colorful and protean supporting characters are like so many juggling balls--there's no telling where they'll come down, but Barth does a nimble job of catching them.

And if the book's humor, pace, and interesting subject-matter were not enough to recommend it, "The Sot-Weed Factor", like all great literature, has incredible depth, revealing verities and realities that are relevant in any day and age (not the least of which is "virtue ain't always its own reward"). Read this book, and I can virtually guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Satirical, twisted epic of many interwoven stories.......2006-03-23

Although "The Sot-Weed Factor" is a brick of a book, it reads breezily. Barth managed to create a great parody of a historical novel, and a novel of "box in a box" type - there are so many interconnected stories, retrospectives, lost and found memoir, twists and turns, and everything written in such a hilarious manner and at a top speed, that only someone who is totally in control of his writing could make this work.
The main protagonist, Ebenezer Cooke, wants to make a career of writing and becomes the Poet-Laureate of Maryland (at the end of the 17th century, when its boundaries are disputable and there is practically no law enforcement or morals) with a mission to write an epic poem praising this territory. He goes to Maryland and gets involved in most improbable adventures, in which the crucial role is played by his former tutor, Henry Burlingame, a character of many faces (in fact, almost every character is not who they were at the beginning, including Eben's twin sister or his prostitute muse). Many legendary and historical characters are also mentioned in this novel, which in fact, albeit satirically, forms a Maryland epic in itself. The language and humor are unbeatable, and it is an intellectual delight.

Astounding Novel.......2006-02-05

Utterly hilarious, page after page after page. Brilliant. Genius. You are thankful of the thickness of the book, as you ruefully measure how many more pages of entertainment you have left. If there were a medical procedure to have my memory of the book removed, I would do it, just so I can read the book again fresh. But I'm going to read it again anyway. Rollicking.

No superlatives, and yet..........2004-08-10

Best book I ever read. No favorite colors, films, songs, artists, authors, weather patterns in my life - but one book I'll call the best, the favorite. Twenty-five to thirty years ago I read it over and over again until it's eventual disintegration from use and from its own weight. I still have yellowed clips of paragraphs, retyped (on an IBM Selectric, thank you) and carried in pocket or purse to remind me to change my angle of observation from time to time. Plenty of reviews here to tell you the story, I'm just here to praise it.

Outrageously funny.......2004-05-25

This is the only book of this size (1200 pages) that I have read three times. I first read it in 1972 and just read it again last year. It is definitely NOT a "beach" read, and requires concentration, but is well worth it. After this, I read two or three more by Barth, and was quite disappointed.

The security interest is one of the most important devices used by financiers to manage credit risk. A financier that holds a security interest over the assets of a debtor enjoys considerable advantages over those creditors of the debtor who do not - since the security interest confers on the financier, in the event of a default by or the insolvency of the debtor, preferential rights of recourse against the assets encompassed by the security interest. By far the most important class of security interest, concerns security interests granted by companies over their personal property. The company is the dominant legal entity used for business enterprises, and a company's most valuable assets are likely to be its receivables, inventory, cash deposits, investment assets and intellectual property rights, all types of personal property. Security interests over personal property thus play an integral role in many modern financing transactions. For example, the obligations owed by a company to a financier in a multi-lender transaction (such as a loan syndication or risk participation) and to investors in structured financial products (such as asset-backed securities) are commonly supported by security interests over the company's personal property. This book discusses in detail the types of security interest that companies can grant over their personal property, and the regulation of such security interests under the laws of England and Wales, and the major common law jurisdictions of Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Reference is also made to selected material on security interests from the economically important common law jurisdictions of Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. A Strange Melange.......2007-04-01

Picked up this audio cassette edition in a remainder bin for $5, and thought I was swindled...

The author clearly wants to work a policy agenda, which disagrees a lot with Hillary's position on a wide variety of issues. An especially recurring theme is Hillary's position on family issues; the author would assert that Hillary wants the state to raise children and not mothers and fathers.

That being said, there is a lot of stuff in this book which, if halfway true, does form an image of Hillary as a post-hippie policy wonk who has a powerful intellect and strong will. I do think that, nearing the age of 60, Hillary has outgrown a lot of the viewpoints and beliefs attributed to her in this book.

And, as others here have said, this book is a scandalmongering exercise, but, well, we must educate ourselves on the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination, right? If this is as bad as anyone can possibly paint her, I'd say she's electable...

I got this book used and thought it would be interesting to read after the fact of HRC's moving on to other things. Without a doubt I believe the Clinton administration was filled with lies, deceit and well, just plain politics. This book is a discredit to thoughtful readers. I've only thrown away a handful of books in my life and this is one of them.

Exhaustively researched, but horribly biased.......2002-01-08

I bought this biography because I have always been fascinated with Hillary Rodham Clinton's role in her husband's administration. I was hoping for an objective look at her contributions to policy, instead, this novel is full of acrimonious allegations and innuendo. It seems that the author is completely unable to separate HRC the person from her politics. This book is horribly slanted and I would not recommend to someone who truly desires insight into either one of the Clintons.

Not necessarily a Hillary fan but...............2000-11-22

I could not even finish the book. The negativity in virtually every chapter oppressed my soul. I wanted facts and to gain some knowledge about Hillary, and all I got was nausea. Milton's bias was oozing from every page. The information was second, third, and fourth hand, unsubstantiated, and based on assumptions and innuendo. It was like reading a tabloid that went on for over 400 pages. Milton spent too much time explaining what Hillary thought and what all of her "ulterior motives" were for virtually everything she has done in her life thus far. Did she know Hillary's inner thoughts by osmosis or through some Vulcan mind meld? Come on! Don't buy it, don't even check it out from the library. I would have given it a negative 5 rating, but that was not an option. A complete and utter waste of paper and ink.

Secret Police.......2000-06-26

It wouldn't surprise me at all if many of the negative reviews for this book were planted by the Clintons' secret police. Genuine or planted, note that none of those reviews defend the Clintons on the facts. They claim the author is a hater who ignored all of the Hillary's "accomplishments," without of course naming any of them. In fact her sole accomplishment, among numerous public policy failures and absurd leftist notions about children and education, was that she married a man who happened to become president.

It's true that the author repeats some of the Clinton gossip, but she makes no attempt to disguise it as fact. She even has several kind things to say about this disgusting person. But like almost all who write about HRC, she can't escape the inevitable conclusion that this woman is a liar and a demagogue, ready to trash innocent lives and careers to secure her grab for power and adulation. What's amazing to me is how many celebrity worshipers there are out there who don't want to know the facts, or who know them and simply don't care.

This second volume contains Bolingbroke's Dissertation upon Parties and his letters on the study and use of history.

Henry Saint John, Lord Bolingbroke, was an English statesman, orator and writer. A Jacobite, he spend much of life in exile and wrote influential political treaties, notably The Idea of a Patriot King (1749).

As an educator I "saw" former students with new eyes because of JJ in this heartrending, courageous story. The deeply personal information is compelling. I congratulate the educators, friends, doctors, family, and the amazing JJ. My thanks to the author and the cover illustrator for giving me an education!!
