Book Description
This revised and expanded version of "Analysis for Improving Performance" provides the tools for doing the crucial - yet often overlooked - upfront analyses essential to the success of any performance improvement effort. Human resource development expert Richard A. Swanson's step-by-step method allows program developers and managers to: assess an organization's real business needs and the status of its supporting systems; analyze necessary worker skills, knowledge, and attitudes; specify performance requirements and evaluation standards; and produce a viable and comprehensive performance improvement design. This second edition is extensively revised throughout and contains many updated case studies and expanded concepts. It also contains a new chapter on Documenting and Improving Work Process. In the end, the tools and resources provided within "Analysis for Improving Performance" will help make sure that workplace performance improvement efforts really work.
Customer Reviews:
Knows what he is talking about.......2007-08-04
Swanson has a long history working with organizations and as a academician regarding this text's topic. He writes well; explaining his theories so that they are easily grasped--even if one doesn't always agree with them.
I am not sure this would be a bedtime read, but for a student who wants some basis for either OD or training and development, this is a good place to start.
Do you want to know how to change your company so it does things better and more efficently? Then read this book!.......2007-05-06
I thought this was a wonderful book. The principles explained here regarding how to improve your company's performance (or any company for that matter) are universal. Instead of writing about how to run a company better the author could have been talking about how to master butterfly, breast stroke, back stroke, and freestyle as a swimmer. Or he could have been talking about how to improve one's game as a golfer. But this book is about how to figure out what your company is doing now, how it can do things better in the future, and how to change the current ways to better future ways.
The "Performance Improvement Model" (PIM) involves the following five steps:
1. Analyze
2. Design
3. Develop
4. Implement
5. Evaluate
6. Start Over at Step 1
And the author applies the PIM at the following levels in a business:
1. Organizational
2. Process
3. Team
4. Worker
What is covered in this book is what an entrepreneur must consider when writing a business plan and later when implementing it. It is also what an established business owner must do in order to grow her business and remain competitive in her market and industry. Some might call it a strategic planning book.
There were loads of helpful figures to examine while reading this book. And I liked that. I also liked the "conclusions" included at the end of each chapter that made it easier for me to grasp what the book was about when I did my first skim of it.
The book is a second edition. I have not read the first edition, but the two reviews ahead of me for this book apply to the first edition. The book I am reviewing was written in 2007 and I highly recommend it to anyone who is putting together a business plan or doing strategic planning for a small business. 5 stars!
A Good Read!.......2001-03-24
Hats off to author Richard A. Swanson for writing clearly, interestingly and compellingly on the subject of creating effective programs to improve workplace performance. He champions approaching this task with up-front analysis based on systems theory. Since he criticizes ordinary management for not understanding this problem and for not knowing the methods that can be used to resolve it, we [...] recommend this book not only to Human Resources professionals, but also to managers and executives in all industries. If you want employee performance to improve, upgrade your understanding of how to make it so.
AWARD WINNER!.......1999-11-09
"Analysis for Improving Performance" won the book-of-the-year awards from both the International Society for Performance Improvement and the Society for Human Resource Management.

One Hundred Problems in Celestial Navigation, Second Edition
ASIN: 0870333410 |
Customer Reviews:
A Pragmatic Text.......2001-03-22
I regained an interest in navigation as a result of my desire to improve my ability to read technical material. I had graduated from Navy OCS in the mid 60's my initial exposure. My interest has been inspired by Patrick O'Brian novels.
I made little progress with celestial navigation by reading various editions of Duttons and Bowditch. Was surprised HO 214 was obsolete! Made tremendous progress using 'A Star to Steer Her By." But, came to the rapid conclusion that HO 229 sight reductions were tedious, slow, and error prone if you lack sleep or are under pressure. This is despite excellent tools such as the Davis workforms. Maybe Im just error prone!
Knowing that O'Brian era navigators and midshipmen did and learned navigation with use of only an almanac and logarithm tables? I looked for a method to do sight reductions using a scientific calculator. "Celestial for the Cruising Navigator" answers that need.
I also believe texts designed for amateurs (Sail Boat Types) should be enjoyable to read and be easily seen as being practical and useful to you. Merle B. Turner does an excellent job here.
I particularly like the way Turner introduces you to Nautical Astronomy facts and fundamentals - this adds fascination to the subject. Have you ever opened an Elderidge Coastal Pilot and wondered why declination alone is given? Do you know about amplitudes and their uses at sea? Turner sheds more than a little light on these types of applications of celestial navigation.
Finally, I have one complaint - minor, and one final area of praise. The complaint is that Turner occasionally assumes you know more than you do. Keep Bowditch handy and it's no big deal. Finally, The book conveys a lot about the personality of its author. Turner is very intelligent, knowledgeable, occasionally likeably eccentric and entertaining. But, don't use this as your first celestial text. Start with something like "A Star to Steer Her By." This will boost your confidence, de-mystify the subject and whet your appetite for more. Collect a Bowditch and then read this text. The navigation space on a typical sailing cruiser is pretty cramped, the crew is limited, and you will come to appreciate the efficiancy using a calculator. Someday, GPS may fail you.

Book Description
Polymers occur in many different states and their physical properties are strongly correlated with their conformations. The theoretical investigation of the conformational properties of polymers is a difficult task and numerical methods play an important role in this field. This book contains contributions from a workshop on numerical methods for polymeric systems, held at the IMA in May 1996, which brought together chemists, physicists, mathematicians, computer scientists and statisticians with a common interest in numerical methods. The two major approaches used in the field are molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo methods, and the book includes reviews of both approaches as well as applications to particular polymeric systems. The molecular dynamics approach solves the Newtonian equations of motion of the polymer, giving direct information about the polymer dynamics as well as about static properties. The Monte Carlo approaches discussed in this book all involve sampling along a Markov chain defined on the configuration space of the system. An important feature of the book is the treatment of Monte Carlo methods, including umbrella sampling and multiple Markov chain methods, which are useful for strongly interacting systems such as polymers at low temperatures and in compact phases. The book is of interest to workers in polymer statistical mechanics and also to a wider audience interested in numerical methods and their application in polymeric systems.

Book Description
Even though mathematics and physics have been related for centuries and this relation appears to be unproblematic, there are many questions still open: Is mathematics really necessary for physics, or could physics exist without mathematics? Should we think physically and then add the mathematics apt to formalise our physical intuition, or should we think mathematically and then interpret physically the obtained results? Do we get mathematical objects by abstraction from real objects, or vice versa? Why is mathematics effective into physics? These are all relevant questions, whose answers are necessary to fully understand the status of physics, particularly of contemporary physics. The aim of this book is to offer plausible answers to such questions through both historical analyses of relevant cases, and philosophical analyses of the relations between mathematics and physics.
Book Description
From Brittany’s fog-shrouded forests to the elegant dark heart of Paris’s royal court, one woman must challenge a country’s destiny–and her own dangerous fate.
France, 1585. She is the youngest and most powerful of the “Sisters of Faire Isle,” women known far and wide for their extraordinary mystical abilities. Skilled in healing and able to forecast the future of those around her, Miri Cheney has returned to her ancestral home to take refuge from a land devastated by civil war–and to grieve for her family, driven to exile. But she cannot hide from the formidable new power threatening to seize control of France from the dread “Dark Queen,” Catherine de Medici–a diabolical woman known only as the Silver Rose. Miri has no choice but to turn to the one man she distrusts as much as she desires: Simon Aristide, the charismatic witch-finder who is now himself the hunted, and who has reluctantly made an unholy pact with Catherine. Miri must defy throne and family to save all that she loves most–and command a future greater than she could ever imagine.
Vibrant with stunning historical detail, alive with characters as richly passionate as they are compelling, The Silver Rose is a sweeping, exquisitely wrought tale from a mesmerizing storyteller.

Chapter One
The storm hovered in the distance, the gathering clouds like a herd of wild gray stallions about to rampage through Port Corsair and steal away the serenity of the summer afternoon. As Miri cantered her pony into the small harbor town, she straightened in the saddle, her nostrils flaring as she scented the air. The storm was one, perhaps two hours away at most by her reckoning. The rocky coast of Faire Isle usually took the brunt of the tempests hurled from the sea, but not even the heart of the small island would be immune to the force of this one.
The brisk wind blowing leeward threatened to wreak havoc with her hair, but her pale blond tresses were tightly bound in a braid that fell to the small of her back. Hair so severely confined might have left another woman’s face too harshly exposed, but it only served to emphasize the striking mold of her cheekbones. There was something a little fey in her expression, the reflection of a woman who kept mostly to herself, more comfortable with the creatures of the forest than she was with her own kind.
Tall and thin, she wore a belted, ankle-length gown, the soft gray hue adding to the ethereal illusion that she was a lady who could easily vanish in a puff of mist. Her skirts and petticoats bunched uncomfortably about her knees as she rode astride. The fashion for sidesaddles had never been adopted by the practical women of Faire Isle. Miri would as soon have dispensed with a saddle altogether and donned a comfortable pair of masculine breeches as she had been wont to do as a child. But she feared that she already created enough of a stir when she ventured into town these days.
As Miri slowed her pony to a walk, she braced herself for the familiar onslaught of faces peering at her over cottage fences. Some simply stared; others nodded their heads in uneasy recognition. An apple-cheeked woman weeding her garden ventured to wave, but as Miri went by, the woman immediately turned to whisper to her daughter.
Miri held her head high, but the whispers, the stares thrust her back through the years to another gloom-ridden summer day . . .
The drum beat out a relentless tattoo and her heart seemed to thud in tempo as she was dragged toward the town square by the grim-faced witch-hunters in their black robes. The halter they had fastened about her neck abraded her skin raw, but she tried to keep her chin up, remember who she was, the daughter of the brave Chevalier Louis Cheney and the Lady Evangeline, one of the wisest women Faire Isle had ever known. But she shrank from all those staring eyes, the faces of people she’d believed were friends and neighbors.
She was a true daughter of the earth. How could they think that she was a witch who had made an unholy pact with the devil? Why would anyone want to hurt her? She twisted her head and directed a pleading glance toward the youngest of the witch-hunters. Although he swallowed hard, his dark eyes growing moist, Simon kept marching and doggedly beat the drum . . .
Miri shuddered and thrust the memory back into the dark recesses of her past where it belonged. She was no longer that frightened and bewildered child, but a woman of six and twenty, all too familiar with the ignorance and cruelty to be found in the world. So much had changed in her life since that dark summer day she’d survived her arrest for witchcraft, except perhaps for one thing. Many still suspected her of practicing sorcery.
“Filthy little witch!”
Miri flinched in spite of herself at the shrill cry. She shifted in the saddle, glancing about her for the source of the angry outcry only to realize that the epithet had not been hurled at her.
A group of some half-dozen women was clustered near the common well, engaged in a heated conflict. Miri’s first instinct was to
Customer Reviews:
Well, I liked it!!.......2007-02-18
Although Miri wasn't my favorite in any of the previous books, I liked her much better in her "own" book. She finally showed some courage to admit her desires and follow her heart. I would have liked to hear more about Gabrielle and Remy; it seems our author favors Ariane and Renard. Overall, this was a good series and I would recommend it.
While a bit predictable, still a satisfying conclusion.......2006-12-09
Filled with the imagery and passion of its predecessors, The Silver Rose follows the story of Miribelle Cheney, the youngest of the three Cheney sisters. While the synopsis lists her as the most powerful of the trio, I have to disagree. Infinitely patient and gentle, Miri is the antithesis of the powerful, jaded Gabrielle and the nurturing and fiercely maternal Ariane.
Miri joins long-time friend, turned nemesis, turned ally, Simon Aristide in a hunt for the elusive Silver Rose. During the twists and turns of the pursuit, Simon and Miri discover their mutual weakness for each other and a love that grows stronger with each breath. The two are impeded by the valiant, and often overdramatic, Martin Le Loup, a fiery admirer of Miri. Together, Miri, Martin and Simon face down the fearsome creature, Cassandra Lascalles, whom, predictably turns out to be the helmsman of the order of the Silver Rose.
While this book is predictable in its outcomes and plot twists, it still strikes the heart of the romantic within. As with the earlier novels, love conquers all in the end, bringing to an easy conclusion, the trials and tribulations of the Cheney women.
just an average read.......2006-08-17
I really found myself saying...is this over already! I was disappointed because the liner notes described an altogether different book. I expected a more sophisticated story line.
This book deserves an 'A'.......2006-06-30
I was one of those who didn't read the trilogy in order. I got a hold of 'The Courtesan' first, then 'The Dark Queen', then 'The Silver Rose'. I've read most of Susan Carroll's newer books but the Chenney sisters trilogy were her best work so far. The whole 3 books were flawless, including 'The Silver Rose' (which I finished @ 1am with a satisfied sigh).
In each of the previous books, we got to see both Miri & Simon at a different stage of their lives, the younger time. Finally in 'The Silver Rose' we got to understand why they did what they did (particularly Simon) and what sort of consequences they had to endure for their actions. I must say that Susan Carroll did a wonderful job of redeeming Simon in this book, and I thought Miri's choice for Simon (over Martin) was true to Miri's character. They both share their love for animals and farm life, while Martin is more of a city guy. All in all, this was a well written, multi-layered, historical romance novel which I truly enjoyed. Some of previous reviewers mentioned their disatisfaction over certain unresolved issues like the missing book of shadows, etc.. but I thought it's better to end this way. After all, this is not your typical straight forward romance novel where everything is tied up beautifully with pink ribbons in the end. So I think it's only right that a story about 3 witches ..er... wise women.. ends with something left for imagination as well.
Needless to say, I will eagerly wait for Susan Carroll's next book.
Meh..........2006-06-27
I must state this before I go on about this book: I never really liked Miri. She was my least favorite of the Cheney sisters, and I always thought she was too naive and, honestly, boring.
So I wasn't too thrilled to read her book. It was OK, it really was. But I just couldn't understand why the amazingly "powerful" Miri was in love with Simon- he bascially ruined her family's life (by having them exiled from their home that's been in the family for centuaries). I just coudn't make sense of it. And she had Wolf- who ADORED her. Personally I think she should have gone with him, but that's just me.
As for substance wise, the book was a bit predicatable (like it has been said before), there wasn't much that suprised me (except that it wasn't the Dark Queen with the Book of Shadows). I did think Cassandra was going to come back for Wolf, but nothing really happened between them. I expected her to basically kill him, but she only imprisoned him for an hour or two.
Basically, this book can't match the Dark Queen (Adriane is my favorite sister) & the Courteasean (very good plot).

A memorable, moving, and beautifully written novel........2000-05-01
This novel traces relationships between and among members of disparate communities who are propelled into unexpected contact with each other by the exigencies of war -- WWII, Berlin. All sorts of basic human relationships--father/daughter, lovers, friends--are put to the test by the evils of the evil, opportunistic, or just plain unthinking perpetrators of and collaborators in Hitler's madness. And Kaufelt takes us into many levels of society, from domestic life to theatrical life, from restaurants to prisons, from the commercial to the juridical, so readers can watch in horror as options disappear: terror, defiance, courage, and passion are all part of the emotional mix. Some of the scenes in this book are among the most memorable I have ever read.

Customer Reviews:
"Goode," but not great.......2002-01-20
I saw Wilson Goode give a speech around ten years ago during which he discussed both the details of governing a city and what he viewed the future role of cities to be in some detail. When asked by audience members about some of the more dramatic events during his mayoralty, he referred them to what was at the time his new book, IN GOODE FAITH. I've been meaning to read the book ever since but didn't get around to it until recently. I may be the only person in America with no connection to Philadelphia to read this book this year, but it was worth the wait and sure enough was a "goode" book.
Which is not to say that it was a great book. Unlike the speech I heard ten years ago, this book is light on the details of governance and the nuts and bolts of running a city. An unexpectedly large amount of space is devoted to Goode's life before becoming Mayor. This proves to be an interesting story, though it wasn't why I read the book. Goode is at his most optimistic describing his rise to prominence.
But too often Goode descends into finger pointing and blame passing. He does not hold back from criticizing anyone and just about everyone, including people who otherwise seem to be his allies. For instance, Goode is pretty harsh when describing former Mayor Bill Green, who shared his philosophy of governance and named Goode to the highest appointed post in the City's government. Goode later expresses his belief that his own campaign workers were "playing both sides" while helping him win elections. Virtually every appointee of his mentioned in the book, or candidate he endorsed for other offices, are depicted as incompetent, insubordinate, corrupt or otherwise suspect. Goode seems so ungrateful towards his own allies and subordinates than the overall impression is that the man had poor judgement at best.
Goode is also short on describing accomplishments as Mayor after about a year and a half in office. The largest sub-story of the book is the bizarre MOVE drama, which culminated in the police actually bombing a house, setting an entire neighborhood on fire. Goode seems genuinely upset about this event, but passes just about all the blame to lying, conniving subordinates. Goode actually describes himself as a "victim" in the same sentence with others who died during the incident.
Goode's post-MOVE mayoralty was marked, at least according to this book, by failure after failure. Others in politics with motives Goode has no respect for wielded the "real" power in Philadelphia, while Goode seems by his own description to be standing on the sidelines. He seems especially bitter that some of his reforms seem to have been implemented by some of his rivals after he left office. Finally, Goode does little boosting of his City. Philadelphia seems like more of a mountain for him to climb than a place he feels genuine affection for. Never does he explain what he likes about Philadelphia.
Despite Goode's negativism and lack of policy-orientation, the book moves along and is genuinely dramatic - even suspenseful - in parts. It's not a story I knew much about before reading the book, but it a worthwhile story to read. I'm still waiting to read more about Goode's vision of the future role of cities that he touched on in that speech ten years ago, but IN GOODE FAITH was an interesting diversion.
