Book Description
A practical, hands-on guide to helping employees through the often painful process of organizational change--whether from technological innovation, limited resources, or new management. Based on years of experience, this field-tested book will teach the crucial skills and strategies to help managers deal with their co-workers' reactions to change; minimize the disruptions in productivity, creativity, and worker relationships; and make the transition a positive experience. Each section includes a step-by-step treatment of tactics, case-studies of real situations, dialogues, and illustrations. Also includes a list of references.
Customer Reviews:
Very well done; highly recommended........1999-11-11
Seeing the obvious "people breakage" of past changes, the President of the company bought the book for the senior staff to read and discuss so we'll be more skilled in change management.
The model is simple and yet powerful. I found myself doing a self-examination and applying it at home with my children. It will take some time to master the techniques and I'm optimistic it will greatly assist us with future corporate changes.
It's my intention to put together a training program for the entire company as it will help everyone better face business and personal change.
Book Description
Meteorites and Their Parent Planets provides an engrossing overview of a highly interdisciplinary field--the study of extraterrestrial materials. The second edition of this successful book has been thoroughly revised, and describes the nature of meteorites, where they come from, and how they get to Earth. Meteorites offer important insights into processes in stars and in interstellar regions, the birth of our solar system, the formation and evolution of planets and smaller bodies, and the origin of life. The first edition was immensely popular with meteorite collectors, scientists and science students in many fields, as well as amateur astronomers. In this second edition all of the illustrations have been updated and improved, many sections have been expanded and modified based on discoveries in the past decade, and a new final chapter on the importance of meteorites has been added. Everyone with an interest in meteorites will want a copy of this book.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding resource.......2007-03-09
I both collect meteorites and give talks about them throughout the U.S. I am always looking for good books on meteorites that I can recommend to those who attend my presentations. Norton's books, as well as McSween's, are the best. It's chock full of very interesting information that has been abstracted from research journals and put into language that non-specialists can understand. It's by no means a beginners book, but one that you'd want to read after the more superficial ones.
The main theme is, of course, identifying the parent planets and asteroids for the classifications of meteorite. McSween provides his readers with the most up-to-date information, by 1999 standards, and when there is no agreement, he offers us his best opinion.
The book is organized by first providing a good overview of meteoronics in general. Then he addresses chondrites in Chapter 2, followed by a chapter related to possible parent bodies for the chondrites discussed. Ch 4 and 5 do the same for achondrites, and Chs 6 and 7 for Irons and Stony-Irons. The final two chapters get into subjects such as the geography of teh asteroidal belt and Kirkwood gaps, resonance, fractionations, and so forth -- this is the discussion that will interest those who have been involved with meteors for awhile.
I highly recommend the book and hope that he updates it in the near future. It has a 1999 date -- 8 years ago from this review. I'd love to read a third edition.
One of the best books on the subject.......1999-12-03
Really a MUST-have for the serious meteorite collector. Lots of scientifical informations, but very readable.
Fascinating - I was amazed at the power of geochemistry.......1999-09-24
I'm a geologist who loves to find good summaries of geology / planetary science topics, and "Meteorites and their Parent Planets" is one of the best I've found. While I've always been more interested in "geometric" topics like structural geology, McSween's book made geochemistry and cosmochemistry come alive like I'd never imagined. He weaves a fascinating tale of the amazing deductions that have been made from analyses of meteorites. "Compositional" sciences like petrology and geochemistry used to make my eyes glaze over, but now I think that if I had it to do over again, I might go into geochemistry or meteoritics! I look forward to reading McSween's other books.
A great book which I highly recommend!!!.......1999-03-20
Informative reading and great photos. This book makes a great addition to your meteorite book library.
Great book for beginners and experienced collectors.......1999-02-16
I think that this book is very well written and easy for the beginner to understand. Lots of great information.

Customer Reviews:
3.5 stars. Skepticism and Spirituality for the average human.......2004-07-29
I wish I could give 3.5 stars for this book, which was an easy, fast and interesting read, but which left me wanting more detail in many sections. Written for a general audience, this book may not satisfy a reader with a scientific background who, like me, may find the passages on logical fallacies and on the basics of evolutionary theory to be old hat. However, a reader who knows little about evolution and hopes to learn will probably find this an enjoyable and non-intimidating introduction to the subject.
For me, the most interesting sections were those that traced the development of the American creationist movement. Underlying the book are a plea for a truce between the warring camps of strict creationists and strict evolutionists and a case for a more moderate approach that makes room for both science and religion -- inspiring food for thought.
What you should *not* expect from this book: Don't expect any substantial discussion of the belief systems of non-Western cultures. Do not expect the latest scientific findings on evolution and genetics or a large number of truly scientific and representative surveys of beliefs. Much use is made of interview snippets, which concretely demonstrate the broad range of beliefs about human origins in the United States. But although the 'Belief Survey' in the book was intriguing, since the sample was highly biased (ethnically, economically, and by education level) it left me wanting more and harder data. This was disappointing for a book that includes a whole chapter on scepticism -- and how data can be misleading.
Finally, do not expect that Peoples is neutral. She is not. While she is neither a strict evolutionist nor a strict creationist, she is certainly pushing a particular point of view. Read this book with an open mind and lots of critical reflection and you will undoubtably enjoy exploring one of the greatest questions of human existence: where did we come from?
Everyone should read this book.......2004-03-19
I enjoyed this book very much. Instead of this being a evolutionist vs. creationist debate it just states all of the different theories and facts, and goes into the psychology of why we believe the things we believe. The most interesting aspect of the book was the discussion of the Moderates, people that believe in God and the facts of evolution. It surprised me how many people have their own theories of religion mixed with science. If a creationist read this book with a very open mind, they may see that they can take a deep breath, and possibly add evolution to their belief systems as well as their own personal ideas of God.
An exciting, fascinating, informative survey of theories.......2003-03-11
The Human Question, by molecular geneticist and avocational anthropologist Hervey Cunningham Peoples, is a thoughtful and studious presentation of all that is known and all that is currently speculated about the scientific origin of humankind. Ranging from Darwin's famous theory of evolution, to more recent hypotheses on how life itself may have began, to the conflicts of secular scientific research with creationist theory, The Human Question is a compendium addressing the process of theory and debate in this continuing controversial issue. Summarizing both old and new finds in a prose text which is readily accessible to non-specialist general readers, The Human Question is recommended as an exciting, fascinating, informative survey of theories regarding the presence and evolution of human life on planet Earth.
The Human Question Review.......2003-03-04
The Human Question by Hervey Cunningham Peoples is an easy to read exploration of human origins. The text is well researched and deals with the issues of God, evolution and bibical teachings. The author succeeded in answering The Human Question. This text will enhance any individual's understanding of the process of evolution and will certainly help in refining their own personal opinions. The book is must reading for both amateurs and professionals Jerry from Alabama
How Life Began.......2003-02-23
I found this book to be highly entertaining. The author has taken a deep subject and clarified it for the general public. I was very fascinated with the interviews and various outlooks on subjects I have often wondered about. In many instances, my opinions were reinforced. Other areas left me with questions to ponder. The book reawakened an interest to think about and discover how we came to inhabit the earth. I felt the book showed how religion and science are not necessarily at opposite ends of the pole. This is a book every human being should read.

great product.......2006-08-18
you have a great product, it just was not the size we wanted so we returned it. thanks.
Not useful at all........2006-03-15
I bought this for my husband who is going on a 3 week driving vacation with our children this summer. I thought the smaller size and spiral binding would be convenient. But, the maps are so small they are useless. And only the main roads are on the map. I had to go to Wal-mart and get the larger one (staple binding). It has great maps.
Trying to be everything, it accomplishes little........2006-03-07
While planning a 4,300 mile driving route around the U.S. to visit friends, I purchased the Rand McNally Road Atlas 2006. I selected it because the wire bound version promised a method of selecting pages that could be left open for quick reference. I soon discovered that the small pages (map size 7 inches by 8 1/2 inches) were too small to display any but interstate and major highways. Too locate local or county roads, I had to purchase the individual state maps at service stations for about five dollars each. I visited the following cities in the order presented. Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Sioux City, Iowa, Omaha, Nebraska, Branson, Missouri, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Texas, San Antonio, Texas, Corpus Christi, Texas, Padre Island, Texas, El Paso, Texas, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Alimosa, Colorado, Denver, Colorado, Cheyenne, Wyoming and Rapid City, South Dakota. There is simply not enough information on these maps to be of any help if you might wander off the major highways. I actually became lost entering Denver because the highway that I was on from Alimosa, Colorado was not shown entering Denver on the Denver city map.
The first section of the Atlas contains maps of cities listed alpabetically. These maps are also too small to be of much use. On the Denver map, one inch equals about thirty miles. The scale at the bottom of the map proclaims that one inch is five miles. No wonder I got lost.
The best maps that I have seen are the National Geographic maps produced in the late seventies. Although dated, I referred to them continually during my trip. These maps come in a yellow plastic box and weigh about three pounds. They can still be purchased on e-bay for about $15. I will be an eager customer if National Geographic decides to redo them.
My conclusion is that buying the individual state maps is the only way to get the information that you may require.

Book Description
Unwanted and left by his father at an early age, Kenny grows up in intercity Richmond, Virginia during the nineteen-forties and fifties. In a neighborhood where young men must fight to survive, Kenny must learn which values are really worth fighting for. Pride and prejudice are prevalent in Scott's Addition, even in the church where love is expounded from the pulpit. Humorously told in personal anecdotes, Kenny develops from a skinny undernourished kid into a teenage product of the rock and roll fifties. On the way, he discovers the meaning of friendship, love and relationships. From Della May's first kiss to slipping an engagement ring on Kay's finger, Kenny traverses the excitement and depressions of the teenage experience. A delightful excursion into the forties and fifties, where Elvis became king, Scott's Addition is funny and uplifting. This book is a tribute to the spirit and fortitude of an individual, proving that growing up poor doesn't necessarily mean growing up not enriched.
Customer Reviews:
Scott's Addition.......2004-02-04
This is more than a coming of age book. It is a growing into adult book where the "hero" is led into maturity by a caring community around him. In poverty, but never poor, this neighborhood stood as one family in post WWII Richmond.
Being from Richmond, Scott's Addition brought back fond memories to me of Tobacco Bowl parades, Elvis' concerts and loved eating places. It is funny, it is sad. It faces the issues of prejudice and bigotry in the light of the 40's & 50's. I found the book easy to read and easy to relate to. I hope to find more of Mr. Woodcock's books.
AN EASY READING "FEEL GOOD" BOOK.......2001-04-26
Not being a big reader, I found this book worth my time. The author gives a view of simple life (albeit a boy's tough life growing up in poverty and trying to make his own way in the world back in the 40's and 50's). I believe he reaffirms that life's simple pleasures(i.e., biking, fishing and camping on the river, playing w/ toy soilders and "exploding them" in the back yard, sharing a first kiss, etc.) are what life as a kid is all about.
The reason for Ken's book is to share his memoirs w/ his grandchildren. Little does he realize he's sharing more of himself to his now grown children and the rest of the world who "thought" they knew who he really was. We can appreciate this man for how well he has turned out dispite almost dying at the tender age of two, being left by his father at four, and raised by a single mother while in living in poverty.
It's a nice read if you're looking for a "feel good" book. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

From the author: The efficiency and selectivity of two approaches for introducing alkoxysilane functionality to polyethylene (PE) are examined along with the moisture-curing performance of the resulting products. Although the peroxide-initiated grafting of vinyltriethoxysilane to PE is accompanied by undesirable crosslinking, comparable silane contents can be introduced without affecting the melt viscosity through the addition of mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane (MPTES) to the unsaturation within the polymer. Rapid hydrogen atom donation by thiols underlies this unique selectivity for grafting versus molecular weight alteration, and gives rise to a remarkable tolerance of MPTES additions to phenolic antioxidants. Direct comparisons of the moisture-curing efficiencies provided by the two functionalization techniques reveal few significant differences in crosslink yields or composition distributions. POLYM. From the author: The effects of the addition protocol are investigated for very-low-viscosity-ratio model miscible and immiscible blends consisting of two polyethylenes (PE) and polystyrene (PS)/polyethylene (PE), respectively, are investigated. Miscible and immiscible blends with a matched viscosity ratio of 0.003 are compounded using three different addition protocols: simultaneous solids addition; sequential solids addition; and sequential liquids addition. These protocols correspond to addition of a solid additive to the feed hopper of an extruder; addition of a solid additive into the melting zone in an extruder; and addition of a liquid additive into the melting zone of an extruder. Both of these blends are shown to exhibit phase-inversion-like behaviors using a simultaneous solids addition protocol, regardless of concentration. Using either of the sequential addition protocols results in macroscopic segregation of the minor-phase material to high-shear-rate regions of the mixer, delaying mixing. At long mixing times, h owever, all three protocols achieve a similar dispersed droplet morphology. Furthermore, the simultaneous solids addition protocol is shown to be the least energetically intensive, and the simultaneous solids requires the least amount of time of the three protocols to achieve maximum mixing torque for blends consisting of 20 wt% minor phase.

Book Description
A source of endless public fascination, the British royal family garners headlines on an almost daily basis. Only one member has eluded intense scrutiny -- until now. When the youngest child of Queen Elizabeth II of England, Prince Edward, announced on January 6 of this year that he would wed his longtime girlfriend, Sophie Rhys-Jones, the world took notice. The last of the Queen's children to marry, Edward has "delighted" his parents with the news. But Buckingham Palace has seen the other royal children's marriages end in divorce...will Edward's be the one that lasts?
His business card reads simply "Edward Windsor, Television Producer." (He heads his own production company.) This surprisingly low-profile thirty-five-year-old royal has never been the focus of the scandals that keep his family in the news. However, many questions remain unanswered. Now, in this explosive and comprehensive new unauthorized biography, British-born biographer Wendy Leigh explores the questions that have swirled around Prince Edward since his birth, including:
What was the true nature of the relationship between Edward and his sister-in-law, Princess Diana?
How did Diana really feel about Sophie Rhys-Jones -- and how does Sophie feel about Diana?
What is Sophie really like, and why did it take five years for Edward and her to become engaged?
What really made Edward give up the Royal Marines for a life in the theater?
Is there any truth to the rumors about Edward's sexual orientation?
What is the unsavory trait that Edward shares with an illustrious royal relative?
No matter how he chooses to live his life, neither he nor the world can escape the fact that Edward is simply not an ordinary person. His mother is one of the wealthiest women in the world. His oldest brother, Prince Charles, is heir to the throne. And his sister-in-law was Princess Diana, whose premature death sent the world into mourning. Edward Windsor, the working prince, is determined to be judged on his own merits. As his betrothed says, it will be "business as usual" after she becomes the wife of a prince. The world will be watching.
Customer Reviews:
Not a pro Edward book, get it for biographical information.......2001-06-08
Worth more for the biographical information it contains than for entertainment. This is not an Edward and Sophie fan book, there are several instances where the author could even be considered mean. It's a couple of years old now but is still one of the few books written about the Prince and his wife.
Thorough, personal, objective yet intimate.......1999-08-24
Wendy Leigh has done it again in her most recent biography - of the independent royal son and his equally interesting and independent wife is a breath of fresh air.
This fascinating exploration of the relationship between Edward and Sophie, their families and background, their work and future hopes, was so refreshing and 'clean'. . . .where others have written books on the royal family that scoured the psyches of their individual souls - usually written by authors with little or no credibility in the psychological field - this book allows us to view this unique couple with our own eyes.
The addition of their astrological relationship with each other, and the analysis - brief and selective though it is - delves right into the aspects of Sophie and Edward that Ms Leigh herself seemed to highlight.
Internationally known, world-class contemporary consulting astrologer and analyst, Erin Sullivan, has included a section at Ms Leigh's request - an astrological portrait based on the horoscopes and relationship chart of the couple.
This feature added another level of information that all biographies would benefit from!
Let's have more of that!
Wendy Leigh has produced yet another fascinating biography for our libraries!
Attractive Cover, succinct and not too racey........1999-07-09
I found this to be an interesting expose on a not very well known son of Queen II. Ms. Leigh discusses Edward as seen by his co-workers and business acquaintences. I wish there had been more pictures of Sophie and Edward together. Edward comes off as a man trying to make his way in the non-royal "real" business world. He is accused of nothing more terrible than taking advantage of his royal connections. I assumed all business people did just that. I never really gave him much thought before his engagement but I like him more than I thought I would. He and his wife and best friend Sophie have a viable plan to make their own way for themselves and future family. What is so terrible about that?

Terrific book, especially in light of the wedding!.......1999-06-23
This book is just what royal watchers are looking for right now -- the inside scoop on Prince Edward. His personality really comes across, and it was interesting to read about how he met Sophie, his new bride. Perfect beach reading! Think the new couple are reading it on their honeymoon???
A must-read for royal watchers!.......1999-06-19
This is a great book--thorough and dishy. It really makes you understand how Sophie has become the next royal bride, and how she'll use her PR savvy to avoid the traps that Diana and Fergie fell into. And it makes Edward out to be much more interesting than his two dopey brothers--a guy trying to have a life and a career.

The personal memoir has become the genre of choice for many writing about AIDS. Works such as Mark Doty's Heaven's Coast, Fenton Johnson's Geography of the Heart, and Amy Hoffman's Hospital Time have brought home to many readers the pain, suffering, and emotional confusion engendered by the disease by detailing the daily routine of caring for a loved one with AIDS. Mark Senak's A Fragile Circle is distinct from other AIDS memoirs in that it charts the crisis from two specific perspectives. In the mid-1980s, right after law school, Senak began working at New York's Gay Men's Health Crisis. There was little doubt then that an AIDS crisis existed, but what to do about it remained an enormous question. Senak writes of the confusion and near-despair that reigned at the time as lawyers, social workers, and doctors attempted to address problems they had never identified, let alone faced, before. Senak simultaneously tells the story of his relationship with Joe, an HIV-positive man also diagnosed with lung cancer. These sections form the emotional heart of A Fragile Circle and infuse the rest of Senak's tales of legal and social activism with passion and insight. One vital aspect of AIDS writing is to bear witness, and this A Fragile Circle does beautifully. --Michael Bronski
Customer Reviews:
Multiple perspectives on the AIDS crisis.......2002-06-05
This frequently moving memoir wears three distinctly different hats. First, it is a vivid portrait of a young lawyer who feels compelled to join the front lines of the emerging AIDS crisis. Senak was there at the beginning in the early 1980s, when the main work of those who cared was to help people die, when no one knew how the disease was transmitted or who would get it. The first third of the book presents some astounding stories, both of cowardice and cruelty and extraordinary courage. Second, it is a moving love story as Senak chronicles his meeting and brief, happy existence with Joseph, a waiter/actor with AIDS who turns to him for help. Third, it is a tale of an altogether different existence for Senak as he moves to Los Angeles and witnesses the disease invading ever more privileged and glamorous circles.
This multi-tiered perspective of the effect of this plague on the American social fabric gives Senak's book a special fascination. As in many first-person accounts of personal crisis, his passages of tortured self-analysis occasionally provoke impatience. There is ample compensation in the sparely written, and therefore all the more powerful, passages that recount in stark fashion the gradual decline and death of his partner. In these pages, Senak's work joins a select body of great literature that has arisen from this dark and still ongoing chapter in American social history.
A Fragile Circle is Definitely Worth Reading!.......1998-07-24
A Fragile Circle provides a very honest and personal account of what went on in the hearts and minds of many who were most directly in the path of HIV from the outset. As a surviving 'footsoldier', Mark Senak's account of having been plunged into a state of secret panic, paranoia, ostracism and devastating loss is told in a way that not only challenges our collective level of compassion and response to this pandemic but holds the reflective mirror in a way that one is bound to examine the truth of our very own brand of fear and denial.
I felt the book flowed easily, was engaging and very conversational with many moments of wit, insight and interesting metaphor - without feeling contrived or 'cute'. Senak has the natural grace of the few who can share themselves so personally without the self importance or indulgence that can reduce so much to so little in the end.
You might expect page after page of a book on this subject to be morbid, angry and certainly bitter. ! After all, well beyond their rightful place at the table, those feelings are the cornerstones of many of our experiences with AIDS. For me, this book is not simply about reliving the early days of the HIV and AIDS crisis, it's about ordinary people living through and doing extraordinary things, finding courage we wouldn't imagine possible and being presented with the greatest revelations of love in the process.
I decided to take the time to write this review because I hope this book finds its way into the hands of every and anyone interested in what has taken place below the surface of life in 'the now'...Because as tragic and untenable as living through an entire generation of HIV and AIDS is, A Fragile Circle memorializes that fact but reminds us that ultimately, beyond the pain of consciousness, reconciliation is very different than acceptance, and an important part of both living and healing.
An important and touching memoir of the AIDS epidemic.......1998-06-30
Full disclosure - as founding president of NY's Bar Association for Human Rights, I was present to observe some of the events Mark Senak describes in this important and touching memoir of the AIDS epidemic. This is an important book, especially for younger folks who came of age at a later point in the epidemic and whose understanding of the current challenges should be informed by the experiences of the past. Unfortunately, it appears that Mark's manuscript received the kind of "hands-off" editing characteristic of all too many small presses today. A really good editor would have helped him to shape it into a much more effective book, and a thorough copy editor would have taken care of the occasional incomplete sentences, run-together sentences, and rare but distracting grammatical faux pas. But that's beside the point and doesn't get in the way of communication. Some of the stories he has to tell are absolutely priceless and compelling, especially concerning his experiences in supervising deathbed will ceremonies and the support and care for his lover, Joe. I urge those concerned with AIDS issues to read this book.
