                Book Description

Teleost (bony) fishes represent the most abundant taxonomic group of vertebrates. They are found in all conceivable types of aquatic environment and are extremely diverse behaviourally. This diversity is in large part due to the group's striking behavioural plasticity and makes them ideal organisms on which to test mechanistic and functional models of behaviour. Considerable progress has been made over the past decade in understanding how behaviour, ecology, and genetics interact to determine individual survival and reproductive success in fishes, and thus the evolution of their behaviour. Behavioural ecology of teleost fishes reviews the recent advances in knowledge of behavioural strategies and tactics of habitat selection and space use, foraging, predator avoidance and evasion, and reproduction. It proposes new directions and approaches for future research. It also considers the impact of individual behaviour on population and community ecology. The text will benefit all those with a general interest in behavioural ecology, especially students, teachers, and researchers interested in the behaviour and ecology of fishes. It will also be a valuable reference source for biologists, aquaculturalists, and conservationists. FROM REVIEWS OF THE HARDBACK: 'Fisheries biologists, aquaculturalists, and conservationists... should become informed of the basic theory and practical implications provided by behavioural ecology. Those concerned with behavioural ecology need to be aware of the implications and applications of basic theory. Godin's book is a major effort to bring theory and application together.' David L.G. Noakes, Animal Behaviour 'Senior undergraduates and postgraduates will find valuable, critical reviews. The suggestions for future research will appeal to all seeking research projects for students.' Book Description

Business is booming at Clare Cosi's Village Blend, until her female customers start to die. Lieutenant Quinn is convinced that someone has an axe to grind, and, unfortunately, his prime suspect is the new man in Clare's life.

Now Clare will risk her heart--and her life--to follow the killer's trail to the bitter end.

                            Customer Reviews:

                            3 out of 5 stars Coffee and Dating -- what a mix........2007-08-25

After the events of On What Grounds, Clare and the staff of the Village Blend are back to normal. Matteo is off on a coffee buying trip. Joy has broken up with her boyfriend and is talking about using an on-line dating service, and Clare agrees to try it out also. Quinn and the police officers from the first book are now regulars at the Blend and are shocked to learn that one of the Blends customers has committed suicide. Quinn doesn't believe it is suicide but can't buck his superior. When the second Blend regular jumps from a roof it's too much for coincidence. Meanwhile, at the Cappuccino Connection run in the upper level of the Blend, Clare thinks she's found Mr. Right, Bruce Bowman. The murders appear to be related to the on-line dating service and now Joy may be in danger too.

The plot is tightly woven. There are short segments from the killer's diary but it is so well written that you can't be sure who that killer is even with the diary entries to help you out. In fact, I changed my mind about four times while reading only to find out I had it right in the first place. I do so love books that keep me guessing even when they appear to be so cut and dried -- sort of a bait and switch not on the part of the author.

For a second book in a series it upholds the integrity of the first story and the initial characters and just adds to the depth and interest. There's also more information about the use and history of coffee along with the recipes in the back of the book. I'm looking forward to trying the coffee marinated steak (sounds good).

5 out of 5 stars The Best Mystery of the Series.......2007-07-29

I have read all of the Coffeehouse Mystery books, and I think this is the best mystery puzzle of the series. The red herrings really had me guessing and Coyle even gives us the murderer's POV throughout, which makes the story even more exciting (and more challenging). The characters are as wonderful as ever. You can start here or anywhere in the series for that matter--the latest is Decaffeinated Corpse. The character backgrounds and relationships are always well explained in every book, so you won't be confused or lost. The first in the series is On What Grounds, and it's a solid mystery, too. But don't miss this one! It's a little darker, but it's still full of humor, wonderful moments, and it's a very fast-paced and well-plotted mystery puzzle, too. Recipes are at the end, as always (including a rather interesting one for coffee-marinated steak, which was apprently an old trick for tenderizing beef).

4 out of 5 stars Second Book in the Coffee House Mystery Series.......2007-07-27

"I didn't notice when he'd arrived. Not right away. Which was very unusual. Because ever since he'd first walked through the Blend's front door a few months back, I'd *always* noticed." -- From the book

In the first book of the Coffee House Series, On What Grounds, the story focused on Clare Cosi--manager of The Blend coffeehouse. Madame, her ex-mother-in-law, was a primary character, as was her ex-husband, Matteo. Added to the brew was a chilly-but-handsome detective, Clare's daughter Joy, an attempted murder at the cafe, and lots of coffee tips.

In the second book of the series, Through the Grinder, Clare has pretty much settled in to her old job in NYC. While chatting up some of her morning customers, she gets the idea to join an online dating service--mostly for her daughter. She also decides to attend The Blend's monthly Cappucino Connection for singles--much to the surprise of both Joy and her co-worker, Tucker!

While the first book focused on one "accident", this book centers around a serial killer--and *several* deaths. In the midst of all of these suspicious deaths (were they suicide...or murder?), Clare meets a charming man by the name of Bruce. Is he as magnificent as he seems to be...or is he, in fact, somehow involved in the deaths of three young women?

Through the Grinder repeats some of the coffee shorthand in the first book, but that's quickly gotten out of the way at the beginning. Coffee making tips, a few recipes, and SoHo archaelogy also make an appearance in this mystery.

Clare is as likable as ever, and I really relate to her because she's from Southwestern PA...even though she now lives in the Big Apple. I keep hoping she gets back with her ex, in some ways, and BOY...does the chemistry between them sizzle!

I gave this book only four stars because while it was almost as engaging and the first installment, the ending to this book was unnervingly, surprisingly sad. I realize that deaths occur in cozy mysteries--but they are usually "cozy" because there's not a whole lot of trauma or grisly descriptions.

So while the first book left me feeling satisfied and eager to start Through the Grinder, this one left me feeling a bit emotionlly deflated. But apparently, not TOO deflated...because I just ordered Latte Trouble (Book 3), Murder Most Frothy (Book 4), and Decaffeinated Corpse (Book 5, which was just released July 2007).

You can read my review of book 1 about the series itself, but like that book, Through the Grinder has believable characters, a keep-you-guessing mystery, and mouth-watering descriptions that leave you feeling like you're *right there*. I look forward to getting started on Book 3!

4 out of 5 stars enjoyable, but some annoyances.......2007-07-06

Eventually the strong story pulled me in, but it took a while. Primarily, the writing style got on my nerves. Ms. Coyle's writing goes heavy on the adjectives and I started to feel as if I was reading some overly flowery menu or sales catalog. Also, incorrect word usage like "palette" instead of "palate" and "discrete" instead of "discreet" is distracting and annoying in a book that seems fairly literate in other places. If the author doesn't know the correct spelling of the intended word, you'd think the editors would! I could honestly do without Clare bragging about her "C-cup" bustline too, it is pretty tacky. I was ready to quit after the first couple of chapters, but the plot got interesting and the writing smoothed out (or the story pulled me along so I noticed it less). The mystery is a good one and the conclusion satisfying without seeming contrived. I didn't guess who the real killer was till right at the end. The characters are nicely drawn and have dimension and I am happy that Clare's relationship with her ex isn't as irritating as I found it in "On What Grounds". Beware, if you like coffee, you'll find yourself wanting way more than your usual dosage as you read this book!

4 out of 5 stars Light entertaining series.......2007-05-11

The stories do have a good plot. Much too heavy on the coffee trivia and lots of by the way information. I hope as the series goes on the author will realize we have gotten to know the characters and let them speak more for themselves. Still, for some light clean reading these are pretty good.

Many great artists have had at least intermittent doubts about their own abilities. But The Education of Henry Adams is surely one of the few masterpieces to issue directly from a raging inferiority complex. The author, to be sure, had bigger shoes to fill than most of us. Both his grandfather and great-grandfather were U.S. presidents. His father, a relative underachiever, scraped by as a member of Congress and ambassador to the Court of St. James. But young Henry, born in Boston in 1838, was destined for a walk-on role in his nation's history--and seemed alarmingly aware of the fact from the time he was an adolescent.

It gets worse. For the author could neither match his exalted ancestors nor dismiss them as dusty relics--he was an Adams, after all, formed from the same 18th-century clay. "The atmosphere of education in which he lived was colonial," we are told,

revolutionary, almost Cromwellian, as though he were steeped, from his greatest grandmother's birth, in the odor of political crime. Resistance to something was the law of New England nature; the boy looked out on the world with the instinct of resistance; for numberless generations his predecessors had viewed the world chiefly as a thing to be reformed, filled with evil forces to be abolished, and they saw no reason to suppose that they had wholly succeeded in the abolition; the duty was unchanged.
Here, as always, Adams tells his story in a third-person voice that can seem almost extraplanetary in its detachment. Yet there's also an undercurrent of melancholy and amusement--and wonder at the specific details of what was already a lost world.

Continuing his uphill conquest of the learning curve, Adams attended Harvard, which didn't do much for him. ("The chief wonder of education is that it does not ruin everybody concerned in it, teachers and taught.") Then, after a beer-and-sausage-scented spell as a graduate student in Berlin, he followed his father to Washington, D.C., in 1860. There he might have remained--bogged down in "the same rude colony ... camped in the same forest, with the same unfinished Greek temples for workrooms, and sloughs for roads"--had not the Civil War sent Adams père et fils to London. Henry sat on the sidelines throughout the conflict, serving as his father's private secretary and anxiously negotiating the minefields of English society. He then returned home and commenced a long career as a journalist, historian, novelist, and peripheral participant in the political process--a kind of mouthpiece for what remained of the New England conscience.

He was not, by any measure but his own, a failure. And the proof of the pudding is The Education of Henry Adams itself, which remains among the oddest and most enlightening books in American literature. It contains thousands of memorable one-liners about politics, morality, culture, and transatlantic relations: "The American mind exasperated the European as a buzz-saw might exasperate a pine forest." There are astonishing glimpses of the high and mighty: "He saw a long, awkward figure; a plain, ploughed face; a mind, absent in part, and in part evidently worried by white kid gloves; features that expressed neither self-satisfaction nor any other familiar Americanism..." (That would be Abraham Lincoln; the "melancholy function" his Inaugural Ball.) But most of all, Adams's book is a brilliant account of how his own sensibility came to be. A literary landmark from the moment it first appeared, the Autobiography confers upon its author precisely that prize he felt had always eluded him: success. --James Marcus

                                  Book Description

Few books have so firmly established their place in American literature as The Education of Henry Adams. When it was first published in 1918, it became an instant bestseller and went on to win the Pulitzer Prize. More than eighty years later, in an age of self-reflection and exhaustive memoirs, The Education still stands as perhaps the greatest American autobiography. The son of a diplomat, the grandson and great-grandson of two American presidents, a man of extraordinary gifts and learning in his own right, Henry Adams recounts his life from his birth in 1838 and upbringing as a Boston Brahmin, through the Civil War, the nation's industrial expansion, and its emergence as a world power. In the process, he gives us a brilliant history of a changing country as well as a thoughtful, humane, often tender exploration of himself. From the original publisher, this edition of The Education of Henry Adams, newly introduced by Donald Hall, celebrates and honors this classic work on what it means to be an American.

As a journalist, historian, and novelist born into a distinguished family that included two past presidents of the United States, Henry Adams was inescapably a part of the American experience. The Education of Henry Adams (1918) recounts his own and the country's development from 1838, the year of his birth, to 1905, and became an immediate bestseller, awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1919. The Civil War, economic expansion, and the growth of the United States are among its subjects, as well as his own 'dynamic theory of history'.

                                  4 out of 5 stars Interesting Read.......2006-04-30

This book wasn't the greatest book I've ever read, but I had huge expectations for it because the only reason I read it was because the "Modern Library" list ranked it #1, but I still thought the book was very good. I wasn't familiar with Henry Adams and didn't know why I should care what he did during his life, but the further I got into the book the more interesting it became. I've been traveling through Europe for a year and thought that Adams and I shared similar opinions about traveling and other things about Europe, so that was interesting due to the large time gap. But I enjoyed the story because I thought it was an interesting depiction of America, Europe and how one has difficulty understanding the world and the challenges one experiences during life. A book worth reading.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I had hoped for..........2006-04-03

I had heard of the importance, and significance of "The Education of Henry Adams" for a long time. I finally determined I needed to read it.

I acutally read it twice, and found less in it the second time than the first.

I am sorry I missed the greatness of this book. I am sure there was something wrong with me, but I found it to be incredibly unimpressive.

Perhaps this came from the fact that Henry Adams was not a likeable man. He was famous for holding court in his home near the White House, and making caustic and negative comments about every President who lived there.

Granted, he lived in Washington at a time when there were plenty of second-rate occupants of the White House. But the thought of people wasting their time trying to please a blue-blooded snob like Adams depresses me. Why did anyone bother? He lived in an atmosphere of snobbery, sharp-tongues, clever remarks, and brilliant conversation. The world went on without him, truth be told, and he contributed less than the people who walked by his house each day.

He was a very good historian in his time. But who reads his books now? Not very many. In short, his own work was not as long-lasting as he would have wanted it to be. Maybe the influence of some of the Presidents he mocked lasted longer than the published and purchased work of Henry Adams.

"The Education of Henry Adams" does not have much real information. He got education in one place, none in others. Surely, the suicide of his wife provided some very painful education for Henry--but he wrote nothing about it in his book.

When Eric Sevareid wrote "Not So Wild a Dream," it was compared to "The Education of Henry Adams." That was meant as a compliment. Oddly, I think Sevareid's book is much, much better. Sevareid wrote of America, the common man, the war, and what it all meant to him. Adams needed to get out more. He did not see America--not the America built by the common citizen who put it all together, and defended it. I gained a trememdous amount from Sevareid. I cannot say the same for the work of Henry Adams.

Again, a lot of this might be me. Perhaps I read the book at a bad time. Maybe I needed to read it a third time. I do not know. I do know I do not think this is a great American classic. Forgive, please, my ignorance.

5 out of 5 stars Anyone interested in American History will love this book!.......2005-10-25

In 1885, Adams wife Marion committed suicide. Upon her death, Adams took up a restless life in trotting around the globe and travelling extensively. For years, he spent summers in Paris and winters in Washington, DC. In 1907 he pubished this Pulitzer Prize winning autobiography. This work contains the birth of forces that Adams saw as replacing Chrisianity and has the reputation of being the the most important non-fiction work of the 20th century and I am hard pressed to disagree!

5 out of 5 stars A meditation on an era.......2005-08-27

This books stands apart in autobiographies. Unlike autobiographies written in vanity at the crest of success, this one is written as a melancholic meditation on life, at the crest of what Henry Adams thought was his failure. Adams always refers to himself in third person and in the humorous and abject epithets giving the autobiography the character of a novel or a biography.

Henry Adams, was a historian, journalist and political private secretary, with intrests as varied as physics, chemistry, geology, evolution, mathematics, politics, history, and diplomacy. He was the son of a diplomat, Charles Francis Adams. His grand-father was John Quincy Adams the 6th president of USA and great-grand father was John Adams, the 2nd president.

Despite being one of the greatest American historians, with a successful career in history, journalism and literature, Adams regarded himself as a failure because he was inconsequential in politics and society as compared to his forefathers and his education based on eighteenth century principles of the founding fathers of USA, imparted through his relatives, peers, school, socity and the Harvard College, was unsuitable to meet the challenges of the world he was to grow into - the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Adams believed that the law of acceleration of forces in history lead to a situation where a person trained for a certain level of complexity finds himself at the mercy of forces of a higher complexity as he grows up. This was his theory of history, intimately derived from his experience of life.

He felt that all education through parents, school, college, work or life can never in its entirety prepare a person for life, because the society around you changes at an accelerating pace while your education rooted in your parents values and the value of the soceity of your childhood becomes obsolete by the time you need to put it to use. So at each stage of life man always needs to begin his education anew.

The merit of this books goes beyond just and insight into education, life or failure. It also illuminates the time from 1838 to 1905. Adams was close to political, literary, artistic and scientific circles in Europe and America and travelled far and wide visiting England, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Russia, Egypt, Mexico and Cuba, some of these countries again and again.

The books is rich in literary style and historical, literary, scientific, cultural, economic and sociological insights as it analyzes self, peoples, times and cultures.

4 out of 5 stars The cold classic of an unlikeable genius .......2004-10-27

This is one of the great American books. The scion of one of America's most patrician families tells the story of his education. And his education is the story of his disillusionment with the time and world he comes to live in, and his idealization of a long lost medieval world. The Virgin of the medieval Catholic vision which represents for Adams an organic harmony is opposed and contradicted by the Dynamo of his own world. And that Dynamo is of scientific and technological progress accelerating at such an intense pace that the sense of the world, the center falls apart . And the Adams born to the heart of America's founding elite feels himself increasingly not at home in the world. The majestic tone, the third person narrative, the whole detached way he tells his own story prevents the reader from the most intense kind of sympathy with him. And yet his vision of a world somehow come apart in going too far and too fast in directions we do not understand does speak to us today.
There are of course other aspects of the richness of the work, including the insight into the political worlds of the Washington of his time.
But there is too a sense of an elite observer for whom the America of successive waves of immigration is not the real America . And there is a sense of Miniver Cheevy child of scorn cursing the day that he was born, of that is the ' old- line aristrocat ' who feel these new and other Americans have stolen his home and place from him.
This is a work which much can be learned , and which certainly has much to be admired in it intellectually. But it is not a work nor is it written by a person , that warms the heart, moves and inspires.

                                                            Book Description

Timothy Snyder presents the often overlooked life and thought of Kazimierz Kelles-Krauz, an important Polish intellectual at the beginning of this century, and thereby opens a new path in the understanding of modern nationalism and twentieth-century socialism. During his brief life in Poland, Paris, and Vienna, Kelles-Krauz influenced or infuriated most of the leaders of the various socialist movements of Central Europe and France. His central ideas ultimately were not accepted by the socialist mainstream at the time of his death. However, ninety years later, we see that his theories anticipated late twentieth-century thought on the importance of nationalism as a social force and the parameters of socialism in political theory and praxis. Kelles-Krauz was one of the only theoreticians of his age to advocate Jewish and Ukrainian national rights as being equivalent to, for example, Polish national rights, and he correctly foresaw the struggle for national sovereignty as being central to future events in Europe.

I picked up this book in a store, never having heard about it before, and I read it in two days. This is a well-written account, with alternating chapters by mother and son, of what it was like to grow up as a gay male, and what it was like to raise a boy who was somehow different from the rest. There is a four-year age difference between myself and Chris Shyer, and our stories were in many, many ways similar, including my living near Chris' hometown. This book made me think of some of my own painful experiences coming to accept myself in a societal landscape where I was targeted as different. For that reason, this made it a sometimes difficult read for me but I still couldn't put the book down until I was finished. Very, very highly recommended!

I absolutly loved this book. This book tells a very touching story of a difficult inner struggle to come out and be the wonderful person Chris is. The Mothers story is equally as touching, as she tries to find ways to "fix" her sons sexual preference. you read her own struggle with denial and her struggle and her need to "change " him. The story takes many turns in their suburban lives. Growing up at a time when homosexuality was so misunderstood. When people believed this was something that was learned or some kind of devient behavior. The book comes full circle-with Chris admitting his sexuality and his Mother accepting him as he is-a wonderful Man and loving son. I recommend this book to anyone who has a family member trying to come out-or just a friend. It is so beautifully told!

I read this book only a few months after I came out. At that time in my life I still didn't accept myself as gay. This book helped me see that you don't have a be a queen to be gay. This book also helped me look back on my own childhood. That helped me see that I've been gay all along and that I was discovering it instead of creating it.

This book is an absolute joy to read. My parents read this book, too, and that helped both of us start our conversations from some common ground.

A wonderful book for anyone who comes in contact with, works with, is friends with, is or is related to a gay person--and that's EVERYONE. This book gives gay people courage knowing that they are not alone, blasts stereotypes of the "freaks" that some people think gays are, and is a helpful "guide" for parents who need to re-think their mindset on what a perfect family is.
