    4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2004-11-04

This collection of essays would make the perfect gift for that friend who loves nothing more than to curl up with a human resources manual. The fruit of a colloquium held at the University of Virginia's Darden Graduate School of Business Administration in 2002, it brings together a wide range of contributors, spanning the spectrum from A to P - from academics who write about learning to practitioners who implement learning programs in corporations. The quality of the essays is uneven. Some of them are so chock-full of jargon that they could only make sense to a knowledge management consultant. Others are clear enough to be practical, at least in the hands of an insider. While the theoretical and abstract dominate the discussion, a couple of real-life case studies by actual executives bring the book down to earth. We recommend this compendium to practitioners in its field. They will particularly love the stimulating reflections of an Australian-born CEO who unabashedly professes his admiration for the great white shark and expresses the fond wish that his employees would approach learning in the spirit of great whites in a feeding frenzy.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Not Enough.......2007-04-19

This book is only sufficient for the less weighted items for the USMLE boards. There is just not enough depth for a lot of the things covered by the boards. Also, there are quite a few errors in here, and no errata published by Princeton Review. That means that everything written in it must be checked elsewhere and confirmed before it is useful. On the plus side, for a broad and nonspecific overview of topics like gross anatomy, genetics and immunology, the book did a good job. However, they billed themselves as a comprehensive study guide, and they just fell short of that claim.

1 out of 5 stars Full of Mistakes.......2004-02-19

This book is absolutely full of mistakes, I would not rely on it at all!

4 out of 5 stars Cracking the boards..........2004-02-18

This is a great book to review material, as it explains concepts so well. It also covers strictly all the clinical points of the basic sciences, and not facts that are really not needed. You must learn to use it with your coursework, however, as it is a bit deficient. I am using it side by side with my first aid, and a couple other review books. It's framework, however, makes studying for the boards a lot easier to mentally grasp, as the systems and the most high yield concepts are already there for you. It's length is almost perfect, as you have already covered so much material in your courses. This gives you quite a bit of time to do as many questions for the boards as possible. I would definitely recommend this book as a starter for USMLE study. For the next edition, I recommend making the book atleast 1200 to 1500 pages, to make up for the deficiencies, and so no other review books are needed.

5 out of 5 stars good for a comprehensive review.......2004-02-17

not as thorough as a textbook, but has just what's needed to pass the boards. (i did!) would use with standard textbooks for reference.

1 out of 5 stars Cracking the Boards USMLE Step 1.......2004-01-24

I found this book extremely frustrating to use. I found an average 1 mistake per page, causing me to question every word written. As examples, according to this book, Vitamin D is 25 hydroxylated in the kidney (should be liver), alzheimer's has equal prevalence in males and females (F=2M), classical C5 convertase is C4b2b3b (should be C4b2a3b), Myesthenia Gravis is a result of desensitization block of Ach receptors by autoreactive antibodies (antibodies do not act at the ligand binding site, but serve to cross link receptors --> increased internalization), and this is just to name a few.
I recommend choosing another book for your studies.

The title sort of throws you off. This is a book about a basketball team in a very small community in Montana. It is a very good story with lots of different stories line happening. If you like sports or small towns, you will love this book. I have enjoyed all books by Stanley West. The story makes your heart feel warm.

This is the best inspirational book I have read in a very long time. It is one I will keep in my personal library and read again & again. It just points out that deep down inside , every day average people are just plain good folks . This is one of those stories that just kept you interested until the end . When I got 3/4 of the way through I didn't want it to end & nursed it along like a good glass of wine . It gave me so much to think about when I did finish it. Highly recommended.

                  Book Description

The bestselling author of B-More Careful, Shannon Holmes, delivers Bad Girlz, another wild adventure into the streets. The setting this time is the Badlands, one of the toughest and poorest communities in Philadelphia.

Bad Girlz takes you into the mysterious and often dangerous lives of young women who turn to the streets and strip clubs as a means of survival. These are girls who, along the way, suffer bad breaks and find themselves ripe for exploitation by men and women who pretend to be their saviors.

Tender and Goldie were taken under wing by Kat, a veteran stripper, who enjoyed the life and the risks she had to take to stay in the mix of the sex trade. Both of these young and beautiful girls had ended up in dire straits and in need of Kat's help in different ways, but ultimately for the same reasons: They lacked the love and support that most of us expect to get at home and in our communities. Where they live, illegal money is often the only money to be made, and the difference between the law and the outlaw is tough to discern.

Holmes tells a page-turning story of sex, money, and murder in the name of survival and reveals the many ways that good girls, trying to get by in desperate situations, become Bad Girlz.

2 out of 5 stars Holmes' signature "slang" hurts this already lackluster story........2007-08-23

What I remember most about Bad Girlz is that it's ridden with horrible attempts at urban slang that make it hard to concentrate on what little story there is to read. The book actually took me longer than it should have to finish because I kept going back over certain dialogue trying to figure out what slang the author had tried to emulate. "We gon' kick itz at da club, gurl. Sheettt" automatically requires a second look for even the "downest" chick, afterall. This bad slang is displayed excessively during Goldie's (a Hispanic character and friend to the main character) diary entries, which were absolutely laughable. I began to skip over them eventually. The writer wanted us to believe that Goldie was insightful when she wrote; that she poured her soul into it. But the entries read something like, "Dis ish iz gettin ta me. I'm gon' crazy. Kat iz a sheisty b___".

The lack of character development was noticeable as well as a certain rush between the main character's mental transitions - what little there was of it. She had the mind of a five year old when she was fifteen and the mind of a ten year old when she was an adult. She was still falling victim to things she shouldn't have fallen for after learning the in's and out's of the environment she chose to live in. In street fiction, we all cheer the person who is done wrong in their youth, but the catch is that these characters are usually still very young by the end of the story. It doesn't allow a lot of growth unless the story is told over a large span of time, which isn't usually the case. So I understand the author's need to rush the main character's so-called maturity. That is forgivable, but I've noticed Shannon Holmes bad "slang" in his other book Dirty Game - which I couldn't even get pass and simply closed the book after the first two chapters.

Conservatives in the United States frequently celebrate the Reagan revolution in the 1980s. Yet, as Lee Edwards shows in this definitive biography, Reagan might never have made it to the White House if Barry Goldwater had not won the Republican nomination for president in 1964. Goldwater lost to President Johnson by a wide margin that year, but he fundamentally reshaped the GOP in the process.

The scrappy Arizona senator is best known for his raw, Western-style conservatism that featured strong libertarian leanings and a devil-may-care wit. When he retired after serving six terms, Washington, D.C., suddenly became a less interesting place. Edwards writes as a sympathizer, but also offers a nuanced understanding of the man who famously declared, "Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice.... Moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!" --John J. Miller

                  Book Description

Edwards renders the most penetrating account to date of the icon who put the conservative movement on to the national stage.

I was only 10 years old when Goldwater ran for president. The vicious media attacks on him filtered down to even kids like me as I always dismissed him as a rabid far right radical. I realized how wrong I was after I started to read this book. It is a little slow at first but becomes a page turner and very hard to put down once it starts to cover Goldwater's life in the 1950's and then especially as he start to educate the country about his political philosophy. If he ran today I am certain he would be victorious. After reading this book I gained a new found admiration for the man and especially his politics.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting man dumb book.......2000-02-06

Barry Goldwater was a politician who wrote a book called the conscience of a conservative. It proposed a number of positions which were popular in the extreme right wing of American Politics in the 60's. Barry stood against Lyndon Johnson in 1964 and was trounced.

After that he continued to be a senator for many years. As he grew older his economic ideas remained unchanged but he never joined the rest of the right as it moved to be concerned with Abortion and civil decay as witnessed by the growing acceptance of homosexuality. Goldwater as a person seems to have been honest open and in his personal qualities admirable.

The author of this book is a conservative. He believes that Goldwater was perhaps something that he was not. That is a casual factor in the shift to the right of American politics. A far more convincing argument for America's shift to the right is Lydon Johnon's civil rights legislation which changed the old south from a one party democratic province to a two party state. Added to this were the problems that Jimmy Carter had as a president.

Goldwaters ideas for America in 1964 were just dumb. (Which is not to say that the man himself was dumb. The world is a complex place and to work out solutions to political problems is never easy) He supported the continuation of a policy of states rights. This policy meant in practice not using federal power to achieve integration. It is clear that Goldwater was not a racist and his commitment to this policy rested on his ideas of government rather than on the true place of Black Americans. His policy however would have delayed the end of segregation for ever. The Jim Crow political structures in the South disenfranchised those voters who would want change. Further he believed that American should fight a conventional war against Vietnam to end the Vietnam war. Further that bombing should be used against Hanoi and civilian infrastructure. Such a policy had the very real danger of involving China in the conflict. His political instinct also lacked sophistication. He was a person who had been elected in Arizona a small state. He had no real idea of the sorts of compromises that were needed to achieve higher office. Of course his refusal to compromise were part of his charm to his supporters.

The book is interesting as it is about an interesting man. However the writing is so insular it is annoying. One can understand the author may not like the moderately left wing governments that had been in the 50's and 60's but to call them socialist or big spending lacks an understanding of what those terms mean. In Sweden the government controls some 65% of the GDP. The Labour Party of England in the 40's nationalized the steel industry the coal industry and all of public transport. The United States has never had a either a Labour or Socialist Party. Trade Unions were restricted in their activities to the 30's.

5 out of 5 stars Sympathetic, but honest, deep, and well-written........1999-12-16

Lee Edwards' biography of Barry Goldwater is obviously sympathetic, but the scholarship is still quite solid. Edwards' sources are strong and diverse: interviews, oral histories, books, manuscripts, government documents, personal papers, etc. Edwards uses particularly well Goldwater's two autobiographies: 1979's With No Apologies and 1988's Goldwater (with Jack Casserly). Edwards dives into these books, comparing and contrasting, and comes up with some great insights.

Edwards is obviously a conservative and Goldwater sympathizer, but that doesn't detract from the book significantly. Two small areas where it does: (1) his treatment of the booing of Nelson Rockefeller at the GOP convetion is *very* confusing. He tries to say how Goldwater is not to blame, but ends up ruining the whole narrative. I actually had to consult Theodore White's "Making of the President, 1964" to figure out what really happened. (2) Some of his terms might be considered offensive (ie. Edwards has harsh words for homosexuals). In general, however, Edwards stays well away from mushy admiration for Goldwater and the other extreme, outright hatred, which you might get from some liberals. The result is a sympathetic, but honest and comprehensive account of Goldwater's life, and an effort to put his life into some overall framework.

(Addendum) 1/14/2002. The recent publication of Rick Perlstein's "Before the Storm" gives Goldwater readers an absolutely unbiased history of Goldwater and the conservative movement. If Edwards is a bit too partisan for you, I suggest that one instead.

5 out of 5 stars The Founder of Modern Conservatism Was a Brilliant Visionary.......1999-03-23

Lee Edwards has a wonderful writing style. I found it quite easy to get sucked into this biography and relive the events he describes. There are very few books that I can honestly say were hard to put down - this definitely is one of them. As far as the subject of discussion, Barry Goldwater, he was a brilliant man. He was well ahead of his time and clearly understood problems that only today we are beginning to appreciate. Goldwater was indeed a visionary who established the fiscal tenets of modern conservatism that eventually established the foundation for Ronald Reagan. Goldwater was a rare breed - one who spoke his mind no matter the cost - and for that was admired and adored by many. Some of those "many" are today living testimony to the inspiration of Barry Goldwater. Yet, Barry Goldwater was also an enigma in that he defied conservatives later in his political life. He always remained a stalwart supporter of limited government, less taxes, maximum freedom, and personal responsibility. But in later years, he became discontent with the Republican Party when he perceived social conservatives as trying to use government to impose their narrow interpretation of morality and goodness. He apparently despised the use of government in this fashion just as much as he despised its use to redistribute wealth and engage in social engineering. Edwards believes that Goldwater was a Libertarian who only had the opportunity to show his full colors when social conservatives tried to use the GOP to further its moral goals. Perhaps Goldwater didn't really change all that much but rather the Republican Party drifted from his premise of smaller government in all respects. Despite these later differences, Goldwater was a class act and will probably always remain the icon for modern conservatism. I highly recommend this book to those who are interested in the history of the modern conservative movement. While the book is fairly lengthy, Edwards does a fantastic job of making it interesting and captive, such that it seems to make the pages fly by.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Book About a Man and a Movement.......1999-01-14

Lee Edwards has written a book that is not only a biography of Goldwater but is also a history of the conservative revolution that he created beginning in the late 1950s. Edwards traces Goldwater's political rise in Arizona, his rise in the US Senate as America's leading conservative in the early 1960s his presidential campaign and loss to Lyndon Johnson in 1964 and his work afterwards to maintain and expand the conservative movement he helped create. Edwards traces the links between Goldwater's activities in the 1960s and the Reagan Revolution of the 1980s showing how Goldwater brought many leading conservatives into the ranks of the Republican party. Regardless of your political affiliation this is a great book, and if you want to understand where the Republicans of today come read this book to find out.

Family history takes on new meaning in Rick and Ronda Hyman's "My Texas Family: An Uncommon Journey to Prosperity." Inspired by a collection of 300 black and white photos from the early 1900s, Rick Hyman has taken on the task of painting each photo, not as a reproduction, but as a representation of the family he has known and whose history he has heard from childhood. With his wife Ronda, he has compiled the family history in this book, using some of the photos and paintings. This history, however, is more than Rick Hyman's family history. It is a slice of history that coincides with the Harlem Renaissance. But it is not a history of finery, furs, and fancy clubs. It is a history of prosperity that takes place far from the lights of Harlem, in the heat of the South, where former slaves took opportunity by the horns and carved out a niche of success on their Texas land.

This story is heart-wrenching from the first pages. So many gay men come from homes where abuse and booze fueled their upbringing. Randy describes this with raw, real emotion that is hard to imagine anyone going through these experiences. I applaud you for having the strength and courage to tell your story - and hope your words may help heal our souls-

To those fortunate enough to read this book. Never before have I felt compelled to comment on a book, much less take the time to share my thoughts with complete strangers. This has changed my entire outlook on many things - and where I may have not trusted before - I feel like I know Randy and that we are family. No - I did not experience the difficulties such as his, however - in a different way - my life was filled many odd and sad memories of growing up Catholic. I married for all the wrong reasons - I denied who I was - and found my life only in my middle years. I was moved to write today to urge ALL men to read this. There is without a doubt - a piece of each of us in Randy's life. His honesty is so rare in life - and more so amongst gay men I believe. Few have the courage to share as he did - with such candid and forthright disclosure. So - whether your searching to find your soul or not - this is a must read for all gay men - or anyone courageous enough to face the truth of our lives. I wholeheartedly recommend this - and now I'm off to finish reading "Before the last Dance". Like I wrote to randy - to all of you - I wish you KIANGA!!

5 out of 5 stars Great weekend read.......2005-08-27

I found this book recently upon moving to the author's city of Atlanta. I was starting a new chapter in my life, and much like the author expressed early on in the book, I was running away from a horrible childhood. The graphic details in which he displays his experiences forced me to relive similar situations of my own. Eventually, I was able to even talk with a past abuser with more confidence than I had ever previously had. Before reading this book I used to laugh at my visible bravery as an activist on my college campus and my cowardice at home. For me his stories were like looking into a mirror of my past and a crystal ball of my possible future. I have come to terms with my sexuality very early in my teens, but like the author many of my friends did not make that leap until later in their lives. His life story helped me to feel as though true manliness is not a measure of masculinity, but a measure of what contributions one makes to this world in how he lives or more importantly how he loves. A few of my friends have commented that it seems as though everyone they know has had some similar experiences or knows someone who has as well. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone looking for a good read. But I mostly think this book will offer rays of hope into the lives of other men with similar experiences when they see the eloquence and maturity with which he expresses his past and the lessons the have taught and continue to teach. I have shared this book with my siblings and friends by loaning or purchasing this book for them, and I'm certain you will love this book as much as I did.

I was not expecting to thoroughly enjoy by this book as I did. While I was scanning the back cover deciding if I should buy it or not I didn't realize the amazing story of torment and self discovery that the author was going to share with his readers. As each and every chapter unfolded you felt like you were in the story, as he opened up his heart and soul while retelling his life experiences. I identified with many of the situations in the book and it seemed especially real to me. The chapters migrate you through peaks and valleys in the author's life and keeps you silently cheering for his personal triumph. Randy's style of writing is skillfully planned out and very descriptive. As you are reading the words, the images are forming in your mind. It was better than watching any show mad for TV.

As I read "In the Arms of Adam" I felt drawn into Randy's surroundings and experiences. It took my mind into similar situations, thoughts and profound emotion that I have felt in my own growth. I was drawn to the depth of the characters and felt my heart heavy with emotion throughout the journey. So many times I found myself wanting to embrace the main character and tell him that it was okay, that the struggles he was experiencing would pass, I wanted to be there for him. I found that I could not put this book down, my mind was impenetrable. I have just received Randy's newest book, "Before the Last Dance". If it is anything like his last work, I can be assured of another truly great reading experience.
