4 out of 5 stars Book addresses hot public personnel management topics.......2001-08-30

The editor of this textbook (and contributor) was also the individual who taught the class for which I used this book. Some topics addressed include sexual harrassment in the workplace, changes in the union climate in the public workforce, TQM, issues of diversity, and the merit system and its impact on the quality of the workforce. This is a good introductory book which gives broad, general insight into - as the book's title suggests - "current concerns, future challenges."

Minor, Raleigh C. A Republic of Nations: A Study of the Organization of a Federal League of Nations. New York: Oxford University Press, 1918. xxxix, 316 pp. Reprinted 2005 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN 1-58477-500-9. Cloth.

          * Written a year before the Versailles Conference, this book proposes the formation of a league of nations modeled on the government of the United States. (Each nation would be akin to a U.S. state.) Moving from theory to practice, Minor offers an outline of the league and how it would function. The appendix contains the texts of the U.S. Constitution and a proposed constitution of a league of nations in parallel columns. A stimulating contribution to international law, it is equally interesting for its thoughts on the U.S. Constitution. Minor [1869-1923] was a distinguished professor of constitutional and international law at the University of Virginia.

Just what is Einstein's Theory of Relativity? The Big Bang Theory? Curvature of Spacetime? What do astronomers mean when they talk of a "flat universe"?

This approachable and authoritative guide to the cosmos answers these questions, and more. Taking advantage of the distinctive Critical Dictionary format, readers can use the extensive, cross-referenced background chapters as a fascinating and accessible introduction to the current state of cosmological knowledge--or, they can use the convenient A-Z body of entries as a quick reference to a wide range of terms and concepts. Entries include topics such as: Black Hole; Doppler Effect; Fermi, Enrico; Heat Death of the Universe; Life in the Universe; Olber's Paradox; Quantum Field Theory; Supernova; and much more.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book.......2005-01-08

When I was writing an Essay on the Cosmological Constant, I found this book to be extremely useful. It consists of six short essays on topics such as the early universe to the CMB and gravitational lensing. Each is readable, yet immersed in technical explanasions. Equally as good as the essays is the glossary, which makes up about three quarters of the book: it contains almost everything you would need to know about almost anything. Einstein's Field Equations are covered magnificently, as is Inflationary theories, Cosmological models and even Quantum Mechanics. Every entry is detailed and major topics inclde a bibliography for further reading.
However, whether you would want to purchase the book is a different question. It is great for a solid grounding in understanding many cosmological theories, but anybody truley interested in cosmology will find this book sparcely used the further immersed in the physics they get. It is like a childrens Science Encyclopedia: great when you're a kid, but not technical enough when you grow up.
Definately go to a Library and read the book, and if you love cosmology, perhaps buy it.

I bought this book in hopes that it would aid in my laboratory work, but it wasn't what I was hoping for. I thought it would describe what the media was used for more throughly but it only had a sentence at most saying what I already new. Some media that I commonly use I could not find in this book.

It's great as a recipe book, but like I said, I was hoping it would provide more background and explanations.

              Book Description

When Elm Creek Quilts announces openings for two new teachers, quilters everywhere are vying to land the prestigious post. The impending departure of two founding members means untold changes for the Elm Creek Quilters. As they begin the interview process, a single question emerges: Who can possibly take the place of beloved colleagues and friends?

"We must evaluate all of the applicants' qualities," advises Master Quilter Sylvia Compson. "Our choice will say as much about us as it says about who we decide to hire." Who merits a place among the circle of quilters? Will it be Maggie, whose love of history shines through in all her projects; Anna, whose food-themed quilts are wonderfully innovative; Russ, the male quilter with a completely original style; Karen, a novice teacher whose gifts for language complement her deep understanding of the quilters' mission; or Gretchen, the soulful veteran whose craft is inspired by quilting tradition?

              5 out of 5 stars Better than I'd like!.......2007-08-14

I don't normally read these types of books, but Ms. Chiaverini is an excellent story-teller. What I don't like is that her chapters are LONG - and that once I start reading one, I can't put the book down until the end!

5 out of 5 stars Pieced Together in a Lovely Pattern.......2007-07-28

This book, Circle of Quilters, is a collection of several stories, sewn together to create a satisfying tale. The book is divided into character portraits of five people, all job applicants for a teaching position at the prestigious Elm Creek Quilter's camp in rural Pennsylvania. Some of their paths cross on interview day, but there is lengthy back-story and development for each, which elicits sympathy from the reader. I found myself rooting for each to do well during the interview for this highly desirable position. Each back-story leads to the interview experience, and not one candidate believes the interview went well.

The characters are as diverse as the blocks of a sampler quilt. Maggie is humble, hardworking, smart and capable. Karen is an overwhelmed mother of two small children, whose lack of childcare (at the last minute) makes you ache with sympathy. Anna, an underappreciated chef, tolerates her boyfriend's mistreatment and has an annoying lack of self-confidence--but anyone would want to taste her homemade cookies (!) Russ, a rare male participant in the quilting world, takes up the hobby after his wife's death and perseveres to become a renowned author and teacher of the art. And finally, there's Gretchen, who spends her entire life dealing with an evil neighbor and so-called friend named Heidi. I kept hoping Gretchen would at last go off on her with a sharp seam-ripper! But Gretchen had far too much class for that.

All of the candidates face the Elm Creek Quilters staff for an extensive and, due to a blonde named Diane, grueling interview. Each is also tested by a white-haired lady acting has a baffled camper in need of help with her appliqué piece. The way Jennifer Chiaverini pieces together the characters is clever and enjoyable, particularly if you have an appreciation for quilts and quilting. It was fun trying to guess which characters would receive offers for the two positions available.

A very fast read and I truly enjoyed it.

From the author of "A Line Between Friends," McKenna Publishing Group.

              5 out of 5 stars I love this series!.......2007-07-17

When my mother suggested that I read these books, I resisted, thinking "why would I want to read a book about a bunch of quilters?" But I was not far into the very first book in the series (The Quilter's Apprentice) before I realized it is not a story about quilting at all. True, quilting forms the framework for the novels, but they are stories of friendship, life, and loyalty. I have sped through all the series that has been published so far, and cannot wait for the next one!

              5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful story.......2007-07-13

I bought the first of these books because of the quilting theme. Imagine my surprise when I found a new author that became my number one favorite. I've read all this series and only hope for more. Unbelieveably solid reading entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Great stories for all sorts of hand crafters!.......2007-06-23

I picked up this book by chance at Borders and then stayed up reading until I'd finished it. I've since read the first 4 books in the series, and I love all of them. I'm slowly accumulating the other books. Ms Chiaverini's writing style is smooth, natural storytelling, and her characters are vividly alive on the pages. It is easy to come to care about the people at Elm Creek. This book in particular can stand alone, with the stories about five people, why they became dedicated quilters, how quilting brings happiness and personal growth to them, each of them with a different reason why they want to become part of the Elm Creek 'family'.

I'm a knitter and have no interest in learning to quilt, but I have friends who are amazingly good quilters. But Ms. Chiaverini's stories are just as applicable to knitters or needlepointers or any others who love their handcrafts, the fibers and patterns and the satisfaction of creating beautiful things. I found many instances in these characters' lives that echo the reasons why I came to be an avid knitter and how it has added friendships and much happiness to my life.

To say these are 'heartwarming' stories makes them sound sappy, but they are not. One of the tags listed is "old lady fiction"; I don't find them so and I don't think many readers will either. Read this one book. You'll want to read more.

Rolling Stone magazine approvingly called him "the most dangerous man in America." Owners of GM stock had less favorable epithets for him after his Corvair exposé. So did many voters, convinced that Al Gore lost only because of Ralph Nader's disruptive presence on the ballot.

Nader, Justin Martin writes in this meticulous biography, has "always taken everything to the extreme." Famed as the founder of the Nixon-era consumer-advocacy group Nader's Raiders, Nader has reveled in his gadfly role and has not been shy of using the courtroom to press his points, from auto safety to electoral reform. Inflexible, fiercely private, and single-minded, Nader seems not to care about being liked--which has lost him many potential allies among his natural constituency, Martin suggests. But he also gets things done, as even his detractors acknowledge.

Martin's book reveals Ralph Nader's many sides, admirable and otherwise. It makes thought-provoking reading for contrarians, would-be crusaders, and students of contemporary politics, no matter how they view Nader's role therein. --Gregory McNamee

              Book Description

As a public figure, Ralph Nader is virtually without parallel, playing a lead role on the national stage for nearly four decades. Since the time he rattled the automotive industry with Unsafe at Any Speed, Nader has played David to a series of formidable Goliaths-General Motors, Microsoft, the pharmaceutical and auto insurance industries-until 2000 when he took on both major party political candidates. In this last campaign he managed to skew the election while endangering the very causes he had spent his life espousing. The mystery and controversy surrounding him will draw readers to this revealing portrait.

              5 out of 5 stars wonderful...couldn't put it down.......2005-07-10

For as much as Ralph Nader has influenced and shaped events in this country, most people know next to nothing about the man. Nader has had a long, fruitful career fighting for those without a voice. In this book, Justin Martin has provided the most revealing, eye opening account of a truly great citizen.

As far as biographies go, this book is pretty straitforward. Martin covers Nader's childhood, school days, college days, and then onto Nader's career in Washington D.C. Martin invterviewed members of Nader's family and also his friends to help accumulate the material for the book.

Part of why this book seems so fantastic to me may have something to do with the fact that it's the only one of its kind. If you want to know about how Nader got to where he is today, Martin's book is the only one available. That notwithstanding, I think the book does a great job. The fact that Nader hasn't publicly spoken out against the book also speaks to its merit. If Nader didn't like this book, or thought Martin got anything significant wrong, I believe Ralph would have let us know about it.

Hopefully all those angry democrats will sit down with this book and find out how much good Nader has done for this country...

3 out of 5 stars Muckraker can't stop raking the mud.......2003-12-30

The intelligent, take no prisoners, crusader of consumer rights is featured in Justin Martin's new book, Nader: Crusader, Icon Spoiler. Martin is also the author of Greenspan: the Man Behind the Money. Overall, Nader: Crusader, Icon Spoiler, 288 pages, reads well and is organized, but suffers from what appears to be some author-induced opinions that detract from the book's authenticity.

Still, the book is an interesting story about a guy who never gives up, made life a little safer on the highways, but doesn't know how to stop when he's ahead. As Martin points out by quoting Teddy Roosevelt, muckrakers are an important part of society, but must know when to stop raking the muck. Nader, according to Martin and other accounts, just doesn't know when to stop stirring up the muck.

Martin brings us through Nader's early life in Connecticut, his college and law school days at Princeton and Harvard and then his life struggle against for profit corporations. Ultimately the theme of Nader's life, as described by Martin, is essentially a life long vendetta against the corporation. In the early days of Nader's career, as told by Martin, Nader had the issues behind him. Auto safety, for instance, was an important issue which Nader championed with much success. In the later years, however, Nader picked fight after fight, including a fight with President Jimmy Carter, according to Martin. This fight just seemed so unnecessary, according to Martin. This experience highlighted by Martin brings out the defensive, never satisfied, approach Nader always gives to his project. Nader is more worried about looking like a compromiser than in getting a good result, according to Martin and this comes out in this episode.

The political quotes that Martin chooses in the Nader biography are fun to read, but some of Martin's chosen quotes to describe a point he wants to make seem unnecessarily targeted to the more liberal audience likely to read this book and, in my view, take away from the author's credibility.

For instance, Martin seems to take some unnecessary pot shots at Donald Rumsfeld and George Bush. Martin, in describing how Nader disliked the typical Ivy Leaguer, chooses this quote by Nader: "At Princeton, the athlete was king... Donald Rumsfeld was on the wrestling team and he would swagger around campus." Another unnecessary quote was when Martin is describing how hard working the Nader workers were; Martin chooses to insert a quote by one of Nader's guys from Yale who attended at the same time as our current President, "When I [referring to the Nader worker] was studying..., Bush was getting drunk at the frat house across the street." These quotes appear to add little more than some cheap pot shot humor that should not be used in a serious biography.

In any event, other than these unnecessary quips, the book is an interesting overview of Ralph Nader.

5 out of 5 stars Unbiased portrait of a true American iconoclast.......2003-11-08

I'm admittedly biased towards Ralph Nader, having volunteered and voted for him during the 1996 and 2000 presidential elections. That being said, I found this book to be remarkably balanced. It's neither a hagiography nor a hatchet job, but rather gives equal weight to Nader's achievements and shortcomings.

Martin writes extremely well, with a brisk pace: by page 30 Nader has finished law school, and by page 45 he's written "Unsafe at Any Speed" and is ready to take on GM! Despite the quick pacing, Martin doesn't gloss over Nader's early years: he presents the reader with all the necessary information on Nader's upbringing and influences, relying on well-chosen anecdotes rather than tedious genealogies.

The section on Nader's crusade against GM practically reads like a spy thriller. Fans of Nader will thrill during his "peak period" of 1969-1976, when it seemed he could do no wrong. But those same fans will scratch their head later on, when Nader inexplicably sabotages some of his own initiatives through a refusal to compromise with Congress.

Martin quickens the pace of the book yet again when detailing Nader's quixotic presidential runs. He describes the alienation Nader felt after being rebuffed by the Clinton/Gore administration - a feeling than no doubt sparked his candidacy and defused any feelings of remorse at possibly costing Gore the 2000 election. The irony of Nader's career is that he achieved the most when Republicans were in power, because he expected little of their administrations and focused on galvanizing grassroots efforts to achieve reform.

This is an excellent biography, a revealing portrait of a man who has devoted his life to consumer advocacy and making America a safer place to live.

5 out of 5 stars The PR Guy Who Reads.......2003-03-02

I gotta say, who knew this guy was this cool? I kind of thought Ralph Nader had a story behind him. And here I find it in full living color. Martin, who wrote the fab Greenspan book from the high falutin era, now takes on an "icon" whom no one really knows...which is the point. Since Nader's plan was to stay silent and mysterious so it is wild to see Martin foil it in such an artist, comprehensive and above all, surprisingly fun manner. (Nader with his clothes off, so to speak...) I'm sure no one expected to see 'fun' and 'Nader' in the same sentence and in this book you finally get to see what all the fuss was about. I'd stood at a brick bookstore perusing a copy of Nader's quasi-autobio and thought "What is this?" Was all jargonish propoganda. This book is terrific and fascinating cause Martin goes for the jugular in a style that is refreshing - and yet not muckraking in the least. I say this bio is a new form of art: taking the wraps off someone no one knew or even thought of as more than a figurehead, and showing what that person has really done - and the consequences too. Oh and the cool part - that he's more than a political geek, that's for dessert.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Study of a Southern Political Machine.......2003-03-09

Dr. Ronald L. Heinemann's extensive volume of Senator Harry F. Byrd of Virignia is a must have for anybody trying to understand southern politics. On his own, Harry Byrd is a rather tacid, boring politician who built a political machine by keeping as many people ineligible to vote as possible through poll taxing and through the support of the "courthouse ring." Byrd is more a representative of a bygone era trying hard to keep pace with a newer and more complex world. In fact, Heinemann's approach to Byrd shows us a political animal who lived, slept, and breathed for a campaign and for power. He was a gentle southern apple farmer and newspaper editor who could hold the federal government in his hand from his chairmanship of the Senate Finance Committee. Through Byrd, Heinemann shows the South's last, desperate grasp at retaining the society that they knew was wrong. This is an important read for anyone who wants to understand what southern's were thinking, not simply write them off in a few curt sentences.

                      4 out of 5 stars A CRITICAL EVALUATION.......1998-01-25

Professor Heinemann has brought to the table a tremendous amount of research--a vast array of day to day details. But the work is seriously marred by a lack of understanding for what the great debates of the Senator's lifetime were really all about. He shows who loved Byrd and hated him; some of the words that they used; and what the immediate effect may have been. He paints a very detailed picture of an able, largely self-made and self-educated man, who had an unusually skilled grasp of the nuances of partisan politics from the Court Houses of Virginia to the Halls of Congress; a man who was very widely respected by his contemporaries for his rock ribbed integrity, as well as his ability. But then he trivializes his subject with his own ex cathedra pronouncements, which show more of the author's limitations than they do of Senator Byrd's. The tragedy is that, while this book still has great value to those who want to learn more about the greatest Virginian since Robert E. Lee, it misses its full potential, because its author does not have a clue as to what the real issues involved;no perspective on the Constitutional questions, only a very limited perspective on the economic; and practically none as to why certain values, which made very great sense two thousand years before Jefferson, will still make sense a thousand years after Harry Byrd and Ronald Heinemann. It is a pity, because he obviously would not have gone to so great an effort, had he not realized a little of Byrd's significance. What a shame that he failed to see the forest for the trees.

In this fascinating biography, Albert Lannon, son of Al Lannon, offers a scholarly look at his father's life and development as an American Communist. Beginning with Al Lannon's days as a teenage runaway and following his career in the Party, the author utilizes primary and secondary sources to document this extraordinary life in depth. Concluding the book with his own perspectives on his father's life, Lannon presents a unique and personal view of this important figure in American labor history. "Second String Red" will be of great interest to scholars of American trade unionism and communism.

5 out of 5 stars An Important Chapter In World History!.......1999-03-20

This book provides a clear and untold perspective of the Communist movement, the Labor movement, and a man who, at the expense of family and comfort, sacrificed himself for the betterment of the working class. The story of Al Lannon places a very human face on Communism which, for decades has only been vilified by society under Capitalist control. The class struggles chronicled in Second String Red should be regarded as important to World History as any other war, for without the efforts of people like Lannon, the rights of the working man would not have the recognition that exists today.

                                      Book Description

This book presents the life stories of twelve extraordinary women who lived passionately and recorded in poetry their happiness and heartbreaks. Our English translations of their poetry are intended to make their poems seem to speak their thoughts, and we have included a CD with sixty-eight of their poems recorded in Italian literature, so that we do in fact hear their thoughts. In addition, several chapters take up some controversial art-historical problems centered on one or another of the women, suggesting possible solutions. This copiously illustrated, interdisciplinary book of 239 poems—“poetry-in-context”--- is not an anthology; together with the CD of readings, and the challenging art-historical discussions of several paintings, it is unique. There is no other similar book.

5 out of 5 stars A dozen great female poets of Italy's history.......2002-09-07

Written by Italian literature experts Irma B. Jaffe and Gernando Colombardo, Shining Eyes, Cruel Fortune: The Lives And Loves Of Italian Renaissance Women Poets is an impressive compendium chronicling the lives and times of well over a dozen great female poets of Italy's history. The stories and life events hidden behind their most enduring poems are related, and many of the poems are presented in their original Italian as well as English translation. An audio CD with selected poetry readings enhances this remarkable, unique, and very highly recommended addition to Italian poetry and Women's Studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists.
