Book Description
Discovering your individual High Performance Pattern-the distinctive sequence of steps you naturally follow when you are at your best-is the key to energized performance, heightened creativity, and consistent excellence. Jerry Fletcher shows how to discover your High Performance Pattern to sustain outstanding results in a variety of complex, real-life situations.
Customer Reviews:
A great coaching approach........2003-11-08
One of the assumptions in this book is that clients have "high performance patterns." This assumption goes along with what the relatively new field of professional coaching assumes -- clients are creative, resourceful, and fully capable of high performance. The "trick" is to discover what those high performance patterns are. The authors use client stories to draw out these often hidden patterns. I think that's a simple approach that can build deep personal awareness. It's from both this awareness of how one operates best, and the selection of appropriate roles that are a good fit for one's personal high performance patterns, that individuals can truly perform at high levels of excellence. One caveat with this approach, the analysis required to recognize high performance patterns might not be an easy thing for many people to do. Yet, it's very much worth it to look for them. Often, asking several others what they see about your strengths is a great shortcut.
career consultants read this.......2001-08-22
In this original and relevant book, Jerry Fletcher describes how each person has a consistent an unique pattern of high performance. This high performance pattern is a precise description of the unique sequence of steps that an individual consistently follows when he or she carries out an activity that has highly succesful results. The book shows how high performance patterns can be identified and how they can be used (for instance in making career choices, understanding and correcting performance problems and solving conflicts). The book is a joy to read (many examples) and is very recommendable for career consultants.

Book Description
This book contains written versions of the presentations made at the 4th International Workshop on the Identification of Dark Matter (IDM 2002), held in York, UK, in September 2002. The objective of this workshop series is to assess the status of work attempting to identify what constitutes dark matter in particular, to consider the techniques being used, how successful they are, and what new techniques are likely to improve prospects for identifying likely dark matter candidates in the future. At IDM 2002 special emphasis was placed on recent results obtained in searches for baryonic and non-baryonic dark matter. The proceedings include reviews of major topics on dark matter, as well as short contributed talks.
Customer Reviews:
The book define the future of the world.......1999-05-18
IDM98. I was a participant of the conference with the topic " The attenuated red giant stars as baryonic dark matter". The specific theme was 'Hubble Space Telescope of Mira cocoon stars as evidence of baryonic dark matter': The dark matter should be composed of the same type of matter as the common stars to be consistent with the established Universal laws and its was declareted in universal form at the IDM96. In scientific term, I think that this is the mostest and important conception to understand the genesis of the life in the Universe.

The Holocaust continues to haunt... and to teach.......2007-06-24
Marion Blumenthal was a little girl in Germany when Hitler came to power and began his programs to rid Germany of Jews once and for all. With her family, she experienced the tightening grip of restrictions and humiliations forced on German Jews, including her father, a recipient of the Iron Cross for his bravery in WWI. Finally, they fled to a refugee camp in Holland, waiting for their visa to the United States. It was issued, but their passage on a ship was delayed two months, and in that terrible window of time, Hitler's armies conquered Holland. They ended up in one of the most infamous concentration camps in Germany, then, near the end of the war, were put on a "death train" to nowhere, moving from place to place in cattle cars infested with typhus as prisoners died, until finally being liberated by the advancing Russian army.
This book is written for youth (I estimate 6-10th graders). It focuses more on the psychological stress of being a prisoner in ones own country, and glosses over the horror associated with Nazi death camps. That atrocities occurred are noted, however, this is a book about a family staying together from a pre-teen's perspective. I don't fault the book for not focusing on the atrocities; there is a haunting photograph of two women preparing dinner with hundreds of dead stacked up behind them. The horror of it all! But how does a child process this experience? That is what is missing from this particular book.
Easy to read, and well-edited. The Holocaust continues to haunt... and to teach.
Missed Opportunities.......2007-02-23
Marion Blumenthal was born in Germany in 1934, a bad time to be Jewish in Germany. She had a mother and a father and a brother who was two years older than she was. When they were still young, Germany began to get dangerous.
This book tells the true story of a family living through the Holocaust. Their story is told mainly from the points of view of Marion and her mother, Ruth. During the Holocaust, they resisted leaving Germany when it was safe to do so, because they did not want to leave Marion's grandparents behind. The grandparents refused to leave their home. After their death, it was too late to easily get out of the country. The sad thing is that this family had everything going for them. They had relatives in safe countries who were willing to sponsor them and take them in. They had permission to journey to the United States, but then the war got in the way and they were unable to sail. This family ended up traveling to Holland and then, when the Nazis occupied the Netherlands, they were sent to the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen. They had received permission to go to Palestine, where they also had people willing to take them in, but the Nazis never sent them. Luckily, Marion's family survived the camp. Toward the end of the war they were put into a "death train" and sent toward Berlin, where Hitler was still holding out. On their way there, they were liberated by Russian soldiers.
Life after the war was still difficult for the Blumenthal family. They were very sick and without a country, since they had no desire to remain in Germany, where they had started. After the war ended and they were once again free, they then had to figure out how to continue surviving and how to make a life for themselves.
It was frustrating to read this book and know that the world would get worse and worse for this family, and to see them not take the roads to safety when they were open. They were very lucky to survive.
Another Amazing Family.......2006-08-04
I thoroughly enjoy reading about the Holocaust because it makes me so appreciative of what I have. I don't think I could ever have done what so many people did -- survive the hunger, back-breaking work, loss of family, cruelty and imprisonment. I have the utmost respect for all those who suffered.
Somewhere in the middle.......2006-07-24
Well I didn't hate the book, nor did I like it. It made you content. I usually enjoy reading holocaust stories, but this book was a disappointment. For Marion's story wasn't interesting. It could have been better...much better. Marion goes to a concertration camp and lives decently. But with the over crowding her family is soon nearly starved.
Marion weighed only 35 pounds once she got out of the camp. Obviously she felt she had to gain a lot of weight. For the book spent nearly two pages on her dipping chips into mayo. Which I find digusting.
Well if you want to read this book go ahead. But it isn't a book I'd reccomend. Read something else.
Four Perfect Pebbles: A Holocaust Story.......2006-03-20
This book is most outstanding! People will never know what really happened during the holocaust until they read this book. Reading this book gives a first hand account of what the living conditions were like and the extremely degrading humanity the Holocaust gave to the victims.
This book should demonstrate that the Holocaust really did HAPPEN. I recommend it to anybody who would like to learn more about the Holocaust. PDR

Book Description
Hungary's War of Independence was the bloodiest conflict of the European revolutionary era, exciting nationalist passions that burn hot till this day. The story of this dramatic time unfolds through the towering personality of Louis Kossuth--a principal actor in the dramatic events. He and his fellow noblemen sized the opportunity offered by the continent's upheavals to restore Hungary's sovereignty under the Habsburg Crown. They introduced many administrative, social, and economic reforms...only to run into the opposition of many of the country's most powerful forces. In 1949, Kossuth fled--never to return home again.
Customer Reviews:
A fine historical narrative and analysis.......2007-02-12
A solid introduction for the English-speaking world to revolution of 1848-1849 in Hungary and to its charismatic leader Kossuth, written by a well-received Columbia University historian.
Highly recommended.
Poorly Organized and Dull.......2005-08-04
When I saw the title, I expected to be in for a treat. Louis Kossuth was a very interesting personality, and there really is scant information in English available. Istvan Deak missed a golden opportunity to do justice to this towering figure instead offering a jargon-filled, bone dry account of the revolution with little offered in the way of background information or context. This is not a book for the layman, while the specialist will find little new covered in the book.

Book Description
This comprehensive reference guide to women who have served in Congress provides detailed biographies of each of the 200 women who have held office on Capitol Hill over the past 80 years. Along with statistics on their congressional service, the biographies contain first-hand interviews and personal anecdotes. An introduction outlines the history of women in Congress, the obstacles they faced early in the century as well as today, and their slow but steady rise to power within the congressional hierarchy. The introduction also looks at how women campaign for national office and how the sexual scandal surrounding President Bill Clinton played a role in women running for Congress in 1998. There are also two reference charts showing every woman who has ever chaired a congressional committee, and the number of women serving in each congressional session since 1917.

A MUST-READ!.......2007-01-11
This is an incredible book, I am an Occupational Therapy student and I found this book to be powerful and insightful. Newborn captures her emotions, thoughts and experiences in such a way that you feel as though you experienced them with her. For those working in rehab settings, knowing someone who had a stroke or stroke survivors, this is a must read. It is pretty short and I was unable to put it down, happy reading!
A must-read.......2001-03-01
I've not only had the pleasure of reading this book, but I've met it's author. She's the real thing. She absolutely shines. She walks a couple of feet off the ground. Ms. Newborn is not only a survivor, but a person who has happiness to share with others. Her book offers incredible insight to those who have either experienced a stroke or know someone who has. She gave me a clear understanding of aphasia and how strokes effect people.
A must read for stroke survivors!.......1999-07-15
I read quite a few books about strokes following my own, but only wanted to own two. This book, which was a gift from a dear friend, provided such inspiration during my recovery. I still read it from time to time because it continues to be a touchstone for me. I've always loved the poem "Ithaca" which is referenced in the title but it's taken on a special meaning since reading this book. Thank you for writing it, Barbara.
Excellent for stroke survivors under 50........1998-07-09
This book says it all. My sisiter suffered a stroke at 46 and this book helped me and her husband to understand what exactly she was going through and what to expect.
A young woman's experience of stroke.......1997-03-08
Although there are several first person accounts of the stroke experience, most have been written from the perspective of the older victim. When stroke hits a young person there a special twists to the knife.
All those who have to deal with young people with stroke should read this wonderful book.
