Book Description
The Fifth Edition of ADVANCED FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING continues its strong coverage of the topics, its well-known clarity of presentation, and its integrated coverage based on continuous case examples. The text is highly illustrated with complete presentations of worksheets, schedules, and financial statements so that students can see the development of each new topic. Inclusion of all recent FASB and GASB pronouncements provides a current and contemporary text for students preparing for the CPA examination. In the chapters covering consolidation subsequent to the date of combination, the three alternative methods of accounting for the parent’s investment in the subsidiary are presented in each chapter (basic equity) and appendices (cost and fully adjusted equity) to provide the opportunity for adopters, and students, to cover the differences in the methods, and to see how the consolidated financial statements are the same regardless of the method the parent company uses to account for the investment.

Book Description
The COSPAR Colloquium on Solar-Terrestrial Magnetic Activity and Space Environment (STMASE) was held in the National Astronomy Observatories of Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC) in Beijing, China in September 10-12, 2001. The meeting was focused on five areas of the solar-terrestrial magnetic activity and space environment studies, including study on solar surface magnetism; solar magnetic activity, dynamical response of the heliosphere; space weather prediction; and space environment exploration and monitoring. A hot topic of space research, CMEs, which are widely believed to be the most important phenomenon of the space environment, is discussed in many papers. Other papers show results of observational and theoretical studies toward better understanding of the complicated image of the magnetic coupling between the Sun and the Earth, although little is still known little its physical background. Space weather prediction, which is very important for a modern society expanding into out-space, is another hot topic of space research. However, a long way is still to go to predict exactly when and where a disaster will happen in the space. In that sense, there is much to do for space environment exploration and monitoring. The manuscripts submitted to this Monograph are divided into the following parts: (1) solar surface magnetism, (2) solar magnetic activity, (3) dynamical response of the heliosphere, (4) space environment exploration and monitoring; and (5) space weather prediction. Papers presented in this meeting but not submitted to this Monograph are listed by title as unpublished papers at the end of this book.

Book Description
This volume of
Advances in Protein Chemistry provides a broad, yet deep look at the cellular components that assist protein folding in the cell. This area of research is relatively new--10 years ago these components were barely recognized, so this book is a particularly timely compilation of current information. Topics covered include a review of the structure and mechanism of the major chaperone components, prion formation in yeast, and the use of microarrays in studying stress response. Outlines preceding each chapter allow the reader to quickly access the subjects of greatest interest. The information presented in this book should appeal to biochemists, cell biologists, and structural biologists.

Book Description
The vibrant Old Norse poems in this 13th-century collection recapture the ancient oral traditions of the Norsemen. These mythological poems include the Voluspo, one of the broadest literary conceptions of the world's creation and ultimate destruction; the Lokasenna, a comedy bursting with vivid characterizations; and more.
Customer Reviews:
Only half the Edda.......2006-09-07
This is an excellent translation from Henry Bellows, easy to understand and with many footnotes. This is the version I use when I read the poems aloud.
The spelling he chose for transliterated names doesn't follow the common style, Voluspo is usually Voluspa, Hovamol is usually Havamal, etc, but these differences are minor and easy to get used to. The print is a facsmile (typical of this publisher) but clear and easy to read, and the binding is good quality (unlike products from some similar companies).
Unfortunately Dover only published half of the book, the section referred to to as the "Mythological Lays", and have omitted the "Heroic Lays", assuming I suppose that we'd only want to read the poems referring directly to the gods. They do clearly admit the omission at the beginning of the book. Much of the ancient scandinavian works we have are regarding heroes related to the gods, so to focus completely on the gods themselves is to miss pieces of the whole picture. Some researchers (in the minority) even suggest that the "Heroic Lays" are actually stories about the gods under different names, which was a very common practice (as you'll see when you read the poems that are included). So I consider the omission very unfortunate.
Despite that complaint I think this book is worth the cost. Unless you want to print your own (the Bellows translation is in the public domain), this book is an excellent choice for what it does have. Just be aware of what you're missing.
Edit: Dover has recently announced that they will finally release the second half of the book, The Poetic Edda: The Heroic Poems (Dover Value Editions)
the best translation.......2005-12-28
the poetic edda is one of the greatest collections of poetry of all times. it contains the beautifully vivid "volupso", the norse apocalypse poem, the comedic ballads, the "wrangling of Loki" and "Lay of Thrmy", the proverbial wisdom of the "sayings of har" and the mournful lays of the larger-than-heroes, the volsungs and niflungs. the edda is better written than Beowulf, the more popular northern epic, and the rhythmic verse gives it more aesthetic appeal than most epic poems. the meter, based on alliteration and caesura, whether rhythmic fornyrdislag or lilting ljodahattr, is much more pleasing to the ear than classical blank verse, which has sticter syllable stress patterns. unfortunately, the edda is not in very good condition. their are gaps in the manuscripts, and there are numerous places where it appears a scribe covered up a gap with extraneous material. the poems vary greatly in quality, and you need a good understanting of norse myths to understand what is going on (i recommend Norse Stories: Retold from the Eddas by Hamilton Mabie). none the less, the edda is a wonderful read for fans of poetry, epics, or norse mythology.
Bellows translation does a very good job at preserving the metric rhythm of the norse poems, and a fairly good job of preserving the alliteration, while avoiding the archaism of Hollander. his grammer and word choice is a little "olde", but it is still far more aesthetically pleasing the Larrington's translation, and much more accessible than Hollander's. Dronke's translation is also excellent, but only one of five parts of it is currently in print, and it is absurdly priced, but see if you can find it at your library. unfortunately, thus far Dover has only reprinted half of Bellows' translation, this volume contains only the "mythological" lays, so we can only hope they will publish the heroic poems soon, but anyone serious about reading the edda will want to get more than one translation anyway.
Hail Asagods!.......2005-09-02
This is the "bible" for Asatruars and Odinists everywhere. This book is pretty easy to read once you figure out the way the words are arranged. Foot notes include variations of translation, and so sometimes the reader must come up with his/her own conclusion about a certain word or name. All in all, the Poetic Edda, whoever originally composed the works, is a great read and can be enjoyed by poetry collectors, lovers of mythology, and people who are interested in ancient Norse storytelling.
Impressive, enjoyable, and informative.......2004-12-25
A Dover reprint of the Mythological section (The Lays of the Gods) from the poetic Edda, a collection of Old Norse poems compiled in the 1200s from older oral traditions. First published by the American-Scandinavian Foundation in 1923. It's a slow read, primarily because almost every page is crammed with footnotes. The translation seems pretty good - it attempts to imitate the form of the Old Norse poetry, and the language at times is very moving with vivid imagery and sonic resonance. The abundant footnotes bog down the reading, but they are necessary since the Eddic poems were originally composed for an audience already familiar with Norse mythology. I went into this book knowing nothing about the subject, and by the time I had finished, with the help of Mr. Bellows' notes along the way, I had developed a real thirst for more. Somewhat difficult reading, but for somebody with a literary bent this is an excellent introduction to the world of Norse legendry. It certainly begs a second reading, ignoring the footnotes and just enjoying the poetry.

Book Description
This volume presents a wholly new edition of five of the most brilliant and celebrated poems of the Poetic Edda: 'The Sibyl's Prophecy', 'The Rigmarole of Rigr', 'Wayland's Poem', 'Skirnir's Lay', and 'Loki's Quarrel'. New textual readings and interpretations are established. New light is shed on the Franks Casket and on King Alfred's interest in Wayland; new links are found between the Viking and Christian worlds. A close translation accompanies the text to give the non-specialist reader a transparent and rhythmic sense of the original. For each poem the sequence of ideas is traced in the introduction and the interpretation substantiated by a detailed commentary. Much consideration is given to the themes of the poems and the ancient ideas in which they are rooted: analogues come from many sources - Irish, Anglo-Saxon, Sanskrit, African, and Finnish. The excellence and variety of the poems give a rare insight into the genius of oral poets of the Viking age.
Customer Reviews:
Rather poor scholarship and worse ideology.......2006-10-07
Dronke's peculiar book includes five mythological poems: Voluspa, Rigsthula, Volundarkvida, Lokasenna, Skirnismal. And it has many more problems, some of which I will list here:
1. It offers "editions" of the poems, with facing translations, but the translations are not very good, which perhaps would be less important if the book had a glossary.
2. But it doesn't have a glossary. Thus it is useless as an edition of any kind.
3. The commentary is rambling and the scholarship uneven. Further, all the best material, which is merely summarized in disorganized fashion, can be found in other publications. The author's contribution to the field is minimal.
4. The "Hair" Chapter: in her explanation of the Rigsthula, Dronke seems delighted to join the modern radical Nordicists, who frequent some of the worst webforums known to man, in accepting the unlanded courtier's, meaning the poet's, vision of humanity as divided by hair colour - if you can believe it. So, we are treated to dirty autochthonous thralls with black hair, big-boned farmers with red hair, and glorious Viking nobles with blond hair. And to support her medieval soulmate in his devious social climbing, our author picks a few random examples from other Indo-European traditions (which she holds this colour scheme to be classic of), in an amateur attempt to show that, indeed, it really was this way from the very beginning. But none of her examples appear to show what she wants to believe, for example the substitution of clothing for hair and of white for blond; and furthermore there are many more examples of colour preference (hair, clothing, etc.) for this rank or that, throughout the ancient Indo-European world, which give quite different pictures of its societies, and these Dronke completely ignores, including the rest from the Old Norse tradition!
It's really a wonder that Oxford published this volume, but it was so long awaited that I guess they were obligated somehow. Don't waste your money like Oxford did.
Impressive and long overdue, but misleading title.......2003-08-15
In my eight-year quest to find an Old Norse edition of the Poetic Edda (still unsuccessful), I stumbled upon a listing for this book in a bibliography. After much debating with booksellers who denied its existence, I finally had in my hands, after all these years...
Six poems.
Text with facing-page translation of six poems. Don't be misled by the title. Volume One is out of print, and while, in 1997, Volumes 3 and 4 were said to be "well underway," all trace of them seems to have fallen from the face of the earth.
I should chastise Clarendon Press, and so should you.
Despite this, I have never seen so much information about the individual poems collected in one place. Dronke gives overviews of the poems, historical and mythological background, comparisons with other mediaeval literature (Germanic and otherwise), the works! In addition, she gives a detailed commentary on the text itself, analysing many words and phrases on an individual basis, and often giving equally detailed explanations of her translation of certain words. She even goes so far as to inform the reader of all of the variant manuscript readings (including omissions) and tackles several textual problems with thoroughness.
I do not fully agree with all of the author's interpretations--some of her statements almost made me fall out of my chair- but there is enough lore in this book to make the price WELL worth it. This book really deserves only four and an half stars because I was disappointed by the title (hey, it's my right after all these years!); but that aside, the erudition in this book is vast and impressive. You'll be glad you bought it.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent read............2007-02-15
This book is gripping, detailed and shows what Uday Hussein was really like. Latif Yahia was Uday's double, more than a bodyguard. Much more. It's interesting and keeps you reading. I read the entire book in two days. If you want to know what he lived through, survived through in other words, this is a must read.
Sick, Digusting Look at Life as Uday Hussein's Double.......2006-03-15
This book is a tough read for its graphic nature, but if you can stand to look evil squarely in the face for a bit, then reading it will most likely make you wish that Udai was still alive - just so that you could make him suffer a painful death. Whoa, you say? Why's that? Any peace loving, non-psychopathic person will be appalled at the inside look at this murderous, twisted family. Makes the Mansons look like the Cleavers. Udai deserved to be beaten to death with a spiced NERF football- or worse (made to watch Donahue re-runs) but, alas he was taken out by one of our Dragon missiles. However, if you read this book and you believe in a just God then you will take solace in the thought that His wrath will be infinitely terrible. (Shudder) So it obviously evokes distasteful emotions in the reader but at the same time the work is of great value because it gives amazing insight into the "mind" of Saddam and the deviant machinations of his regime and family. (On the other hand, if you were a part of the demented audience who LAUGHED when an innocent character got his head blown off in the movie Pulp Fiction then you will find this book hysterical.) You can't help but feel sorry for the poor guy who wrote the book, despite the horrible things he was at least a passive part of. And the premise alone would be a great Hollywood movie - expect that no one would believe it. The problem is that it is true and has been well-documented elsewhere. Oh, aside from that, it is the kind of book that you can't put down, but wish you would. I recommend it if you want to see the "personal family man side" of Saddam and his sons. (Oh and by the way, just for the record. Udai was killed because he was still firing at us - so we fired back until he stopped. Luckily SOMEONE learned from Somalia that you can't send troops in to ARREST someone who (or whose security force) is actively trying to kill them. Police don't do it - why should we?)
another work of fiction by a Chalabiite.......2004-08-24
There is no way of distinguishing truth from fiction in this book, or this man. The book served its purpose, but has little lasting value.
Incidentally, see The Scotsman 24 July 2003 and Reuters 2 Apr 2003:
Latif Yahia regrets that Uday was not caught and brought to trial for his crimes. "Don't tell me that the US could not have taken him alive," he comments on the 200-soldier operation which took Uday and Qusay's lives. "But the Americans did not want this because if you put these people in the dock, they would tell everyone that a lot of what they did they did because the American agents told them to."
Understandably, Yahia has vehement views about Saddam. But, perhaps more surprisingly for some, he is equally vehement in condemning the war on Iraq and says he would return to fight against American and British troops if he could. War should not be waged on the whole country due to one man, Yahia said. "Iraq is my country and it is called the Republic of Iraq not the Republic of Saddam Hussein."
"It wasn't easy for me when I came to Europe to get over it all," he added. "It took me five-and-a-half years of counseling, psychologists, doctors and medication." Yahia now lives in the Republic of Ireland where he runs a detective agency.
Interesting but . . ........2004-06-07
The life of Latif Yahia is quite an interesting one. I wonder if he has been able to make contact with his children now that the regime of Saddam Hussein is over -- and what his second wife may think of that. Perhaps his book deserves a sequel. However, when did he marry? That was left out of the story. Obviously, he must have been married before his falling out with Uday because he had to smuggle his wife out of Iraq. Who was his wife? Who arranged his marriage or when did he have time to find a wife? It says he had known her since childhood. But he wasn't permitted to have contact with his old friends? I think some things were left out to make Saddam, Uday, and Qusay look even worse than they were. That is not to say the world is worse with the Saddam Hussein family out of power in Iraq.
a latter day "I Claudius".......2004-06-03
In America, celebrity look-alikes can make money by running interference for the stars. But what if at any time, your look-alike could have you tortured or put to death? That is the plight this author found himself in when he was chosen to serve as Uday Hussein's double. Uday, who aspires to be an even more feared leader than his father Saddam, is (was) not exactly a paragon of mental health. Picture living under the same roof with an adult with the hormones of a teen and the temper of a toddler, whose every whim was granted, and you will get some idea of what this author's life was like.
Actually, as a double, he was given fairly little to do but took meticulous notes on what it was like to have an up close and too personal look at Uday's reign of terror.
Highly recommended.

Book Description
A biographical account of the American journalist and diplomat, who, as ambassador to Great Britain, urged the United States to intervene in World War I. Walter Page was on the staff of Atlantic Monthly, the Forum and founded The World's Work. This book details Page's life from the sinking of the Lusitania to his death. Illustrated.
Book Description
"There was a time when I was not yet out of the closet when I'd stand for hours scanning the bookstore shelves for a book that dealt honestly with both sexuality and spirituality, that might reconcile the experience of being bisexual with the Christian faith. If I could find this book, I was convinced, I'd be less lonely and more confident of my sanity. It would be my companion during difficult times. Another person's coming out story could be my map so I wouldn't wander in the dark. With complete, unrelenting desire, I ached for this book. There was no such book. The gap on the bookshelves gave me a mandate: Walk into your longing. Write this book." Andrew skillfully and seamlessly weaves the threads of spirituality, sexuality, and the creative process out of the compelling events of her life. Her inspiring memoir stretches from the faith of her childhood, in which she was "taught to look for the word in the Bible" to her revelation as an adult that "the word of God resides in each of us, it dwells among us, full of grace."
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful book.......2001-01-13
Swinging on the Garden Gate is one of the best books I have ever read. Ms. Andrew tells the story of her journey with such amazing honesty. I found the words jumping out of the page at me. I connected with Ms. Andrew's journey at many intersections. Not only did she tell me her story, she introduced me to parts of my own story. It is her honesty in dealing with difficult issues of spirituality, finding yourself, loving who you are, death, and loss that truly make this book a wonderful work of art!
An Invitation to Story.......2000-11-10
Swinging on the Garden Gate, by Elizabeth Andrew is an insightful look at the author's internal spiritual journey through what seem, at first, to be extraordinary circumstances. However, they are circumstances that we all encounter--search and discovery, loss and grief, memory and reality. Through sharing her own experience of life and the sacred, Ms. Andrew invites the reader to explore and share his/her own story.
