O'Neill's book does a wonderful job of providing examples on work teams and their issues of space and environmental control. Data and results from his research (case studies, field studies, and experiments) are very helpful. Sometimes the book is difficult to follow because of the way the chapters are organized.

            Book Description

Although The Common Law, the seminal work by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., clearly represents the culmination of an intellectual journey, the development of Holmes' thought has not been easily deciphered. Frederic Rogers Kellogg traces Holmes' intellectual path, and asks: why did Holmes write The Common Law? what did he mean by his message that the law has evolved away from moral and toward external standards of liability? how did he arrive at this conclusion? The answers, Dr. Kellogg maintains, are to be found in a series of nine essays that originally appeared in The American Law Review. They show that Holmes was obsessed with elemental questions of pure legal theory and link him closely to the philosophic method of his friend Charles Sanders Peirce. Taken together with Holmes' later work, and viewed in light of American philosophy, these essays establish Holmes as the founder of a distinct approach to jurisprudence and reveal the implications of that approach for Holmes' later contributions to constitutional law.

            Book Description

New Cosmic Horizons tells the extraordinary story of space-based astronomy since the Second World War. Starting with the launch of the V2 rocket in 1946, this book explores the triumphs of space experiments and spacecraft designs and the amazing astronomical results that they have produced. David Leverington examines the fascinating way in which the changing political imperatives of the United States, USSR/Russia and Western Europe have modified their space astronomy programs. He covers all major astronomy missions of the first fifty years of space research: the Soviet Sputnik and American Explorer projects, the subsequent race to the moon, solar and planetary missions, and the wonders of modern astrophysics culminating in the exciting results of the Hubble Space Telescope. Extensively illustrated, New Cosmic Horizons offers amateur and professional astronomers an unusual perspective on the history of astronomy in our time. David Leverington was Design Manager of the GEOS Spacecraft and Meteosat Program Manager for ESA in the 1970s. During his tenure as Engineering Director at British Aerospace in the 1980s, he was responsible for the Giotto spacecraft that intercepted Halley's comet, and the Photon Detector Assembly and solar arrays for the Hubble Space Telescope. He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. He lives in Essex, England.

Crime and punishment, passion and loyalty, betrayal and redemption are only a few of the ingredients in Shantaram, a massive, over-the-top, mostly autobiographical novel. Shantaram is the name given Mr. Lindsay, or Linbaba, the larger-than-life hero. It means "man of God's peace," which is what the Indian people know of Lin. What they do not know is that prior to his arrival in Bombay he escaped from an Australian prison where he had begun serving a 19-year sentence. He served two years and leaped over the wall. He was imprisoned for a string of armed robberies peformed to support his heroin addiction, which started when his marriage fell apart and he lost custody of his daughter. All of that is enough for several lifetimes, but for Greg Roberts, that's only the beginning.

He arrives in Bombay with little money, an assumed name, false papers, an untellable past, and no plans for the future. Fortunately, he meets Prabaker right away, a sweet, smiling man who is a street guide. He takes to Lin immediately, eventually introducing him to his home village, where they end up living for six months. When they return to Bombay, they take up residence in a sprawling illegal slum of 25,000 people and Linbaba becomes the resident "doctor." With a prison knowledge of first aid and whatever medicines he can cadge from doing trades with the local Mafia, he sets up a practice and is regarded as heaven-sent by these poor people who have nothing but illness, rat bites, dysentery, and anemia. He also meets Karla, an enigmatic Swiss-American woman, with whom he falls in love. Theirs is a complicated relationship, and Karla's connections are murky from the outset.

Roberts is not reluctant to wax poetic; in fact, some of his prose is downright embarrassing. Throughought the novel, however, all 944 pages of it, every single sentence rings true. He is a tough guy with a tender heart, one capable of what is judged criminal behavior, but a basically decent, intelligent man who would never intentionally hurt anyone, especially anyone he knew. He is a magnet for trouble, a soldier of fortune, a picaresque hero: the rascal who lives by his wits in a corrupt society. His story is irresistible. Stay tuned for the prequel and the sequel. --Valerie Ryan

                  Book Description

"It took me a long time and most of the world to learn what I know about love and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured."So begins this epic, mesmerizing first novel set in the underworld of contemporary Bombay. Shantaram is narrated by Lin, an escaped convict with a false passport who flees maximum security prison in Australia for the teeming streets of a city where he can disappear.Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, the two enter Bombay's hidden society of beggars and gangsters, prostitutes and holy men, soldiers and actors, and Indians and exiles from other countries, who seek in this remarkable place what they cannot find elsewhere. As a hunted man without a home, family, or identity, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city's poorest slums, and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia. The search leads him to war, prison torture, murder, and a series of enigmatic and bloody betrayals. The keys to unlock the mysteries and intrigues that bind Lin are held by two people. The first is Khader Khan: mafia godfather, criminal-philosopher-saint, and mentor to Lin in the underworld of the Golden City. The second is Karla: elusive, dangerous, and beautiful, whose passions are driven by secrets that torment her and yet give her a terrible power.Burning slums and five-star hotels, romantic love and prison agonies, criminal wars and Bollywood films, spiritual gurus and mujaheddin guerrillas---this huge novel has the world of human experience in its reach, and a passionate love for India at its heart. Based on the life of the author, it is by any measure the debut of an extraordinary voice in literature.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone!.......2007-10-09

This is the best book I've ever read in my entire life. Nothing close will ever compare. I've set out on my quest to find a book equally as good, and cannot. It is a marvel that this book isn't talked about more. This book is written so eloquently, you will want to highlight quotes on every page and seek redemption in them.
Do not let this book pass you by, you will not regret it.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book That I Have Ever Read.......2007-10-09

All I can say is, This Is The Best Book That I Have Ever Read. It didn't seem that appealing when I first heard about it. I had 3 friends highly recommend it and decided to give it a try. Phenomenal Book, Truly Phenomenal!

                  4 out of 5 stars Shantaram: A Novel.......2007-10-01

What's not to love about this book? Well, it took me a while to read it. I'm one of those types that can typically read an average page turner in a day or two at most. This one took all of a week, and I wish I could find more like it.

It's almost an epic, almost a tragedy, and almost a journey in ethics and philosophy. Its almost a romance, but not in a typical sense of one on one romance; more like, a romance on life and living. Its prose is compelling - something you can fall in love with. It's a study in characterization. It's just about everything you could possibly want in a novel, and I'm at a loss to discover what it lacks. It's so much of just about everything.

From an autobiographical POV, it's splendid.

What engaged me the most were the characters. They're the kind of people you can fall in love with, or despise in some cases. But no matter what, they're people you can see and feel as they leap off the pages into your lap as you read. If you love characters and want depth, this is the book for you. From the first line, this book is engaging. I loved it.

I did a search for Shantaram and this site came up immediately. I ordered the book without further investigation as it had been highly recommended to me. Imagine my disappointment when I see it is the Spanish translation version. This was not clearly mentioned on the order site. My fault but the description was unclear. Now I have to wait a couple of weeks to get it sorted out.

5 out of 5 stars Well-told account of an interesting woman.......2004-12-07

I usually shy away from reading biographies written by relatives of the subject, since I suspect they may not be objective. This book is by Ruth Hanna McCormick's granddaughter but she never knew her grandmother - and was probably better able to gain information which her relatives had. I found this account of the life of the first woman ever to be nominated by a major political party for a US Senate seat to be well-written and to tell well the interesting life which Ruth Hanna MCCormick Simms led. Ruth was the daughter of Mark Hanna, the man who made William McKinley president, and she married the brother of Colonel Robert McCormick, longtime boss of the Chicago Tribune. Her husband won a Senate seat in 1918 defeating the legendary J. hamilton Lewis. After her husband was defeated for reelection and took his own life, his widow was elected to Congress in 1928, and then ran for the Seante in 1930, defeating the incumbent Senator in the Republican primary but in turn losing to--J. Hamilton Lewis, the man her husband had beaten 12 years earlier. Thereafter she married a man who was a New Mexico Congressman when she met him--he exchanged seats with a Congressman who before the exchange would lean past Mrs. McCormick to use the spittoon. The book also includes a detailed account of Mrs. Simms' effort to make Tom Dewey President in 1940 and reveals interesting aspects of the 1940 campaign and tells how Dewey rebuffed her help in 1944. I found the book a fascinating look into political life from the woman's suffrage effort (in which Mrs. McCormick played a leading role) to the 1940s. Don't avoid this book merely because it was written by a granddaughter.

I know Rich. He's an honest, brilliant, and giving person and his book is not only a recap of his steps to success (that almost anyone can adopt) but it's also an inspiring read for corporate execs, volunteers, executive coaches, and middle managers - not to mention the mainstream John & Jane Doe. Worth more than its cover price, this is a must-read that's fun to review again and again.

                        2 out of 5 stars Sorry Richard.......2003-05-26

Despite its 120-plus pages, this book takes about 15 minutes to read. While it offers a handful of ideas worth considering, it isn't worth the cover price. If Richard Hatch were not the winner of the first Survivor, this work would have been published on a personal Web site somewhere and that would be all. If you want it, buy it used.

2 out of 5 stars More Fluffer from which to Suffer the Puffer.......2001-08-01

I was anxious to write this self-help/autobiography/shameless self-promotional piece off as an attempt to cash in on the fifteen minutes of fame awarded by the Survivor phenomenon. However, I got to tell you, this book not only contained alterable ideas for everyone but also inspired me to peruse its pages in the buff. Thank you Richard Hatch for liberating so many parts of myself.

                        1 out of 5 stars self promoting.......2001-07-22

While some may find the ideas in this book fresh or helpful, I found the book to be full of self promotion. It's title should be changed to "Me, ME & Me." Don't waste your money.

3 out of 5 stars Bio at the beginning was the best part........2001-03-20

I picked this up in the bookstore because I was amazed at what people will spend their hard-earned money on. Not to mention the unappealing cover. Really, if you are getting life advice from gameshow winners, you need all the advice you can get! I figure 2 to 3 stars for the advice, and the biography makes it a solid three stars.

But, I was very interested in his short bio. I grew up in the same town, went to the same high school, and had some of the same teachers. It was very interesting to read another person's viewpoint on the area. Especially knowing more about him. I cannot tell you about the years afterward, but his description of the area and his treatment throughout school is very accurate. He is not exaggerating or making up anything there.

Ever wish there were a simple way to extend your life? That someone would just lay out a plan that could help you live longer? Well, David Mahoney and Richard Restak, M.D., do just that in The Longevity Strategy: How to Live to 100 Using the Brain-Body Connection. This isn't the same old self-help book telling you to get out and exercise and eat right--although the authors do acknowledge these are a necessary part of long, healthy life. Instead, readers are advised to use planning and positive mental processes in order to become centenarians.

Using the latest neuroscience research, Mahoney and Restak delineate 31 steps to keep your brain sharp and active, which they claim can help you to live to be 100. Restak, a practicing neurologist and neuropsychiatrist as well as bestselling author of The Brain, and Mahoney, chairman of the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives, break down the complex science of the brain for the nonscientist while laying out a plan for achieving the three goals necessary for longevity: "an optimally functioning brain in a sound mind; favorable social support systems; financial security." Some of the advice is commonsense ("Learn to handle stress") while some offers wisdom that may not have occurred to you ("Build in a backup plan; diversity your career from the very beginning"). Each chapter starts with a specific strategy, which is expounded upon in short, readable chapters.

The judicious advice offered by the authors may not only help you lead a longer, healthier life, but is certain to give you the tools to allow you be more contented and optimistic in the meantime. --Jenny Brown

                            Book Description

Over a decade ago Dr. Walter M. Bortz put forth his remarkable claim that we are not only biologically programmed to surpass the conventional life expectancy, but that our very approach to aging is grounded in misconceptions and wrong-headedness. The newly revised and expanded edition of We Live Too Short and Die Too Long: How to Achieve and Enjoy Your Natural 100-Year-Plus Life Span reaches out to the now (or soon to be) graying generation of baby boomers and their families to discuss the keys to unlocking this innate longevity and coping with it in context of the 21st century via his six precepts for successful aging.

Though great advances in science and medicine have been achieved, it is our perceptions of aging that still prevent us from living as long and as enjoyably as we possibly can. That the perceptions and realities of aging have shifted so drastically since publication of the 1992 edition only underscores the fact that Dr. Bortz's pioneering research is foundational to our understanding of this subject.

                                  Book Description

With wit and brevity this book contains useful advice on personal finance, health, sports, travel, automobiles, careers, and food. For example, in just six pages you will learn how to negotiate with a contractor. Consider some of the other facts brought to light in The Know-it-all's Guide to Life: o Eating chocolate before bedtime can disrupt your sleep. o 40 percent of totaled cars are fixed up and resold to unsuspecting buyers. o You can acquire a genuine British title of nobility for as little as $5,000. o By writing just one letter, you can eliminate most of the junk mail you receive. o You can lose weight by chewing sugarless gum. o You need to own at least 20 different stocks to have a well-diversified portfolio. o You will improve your recall if you skim written material first, then read it through completely. o Mashed potatoes and gravy are a healthier fast food choice than french fries. Whether you are a do-it-yourselfer or just intellectually curious, this book is the ultimate guide to modern life.

There seem to be a lot of these semi-bizarre "how-to" books being published these days. Maybe they're a spinoff of reality TV. Like most, this one is a mix of genuinely interesting information ("How to hire a contractor" is good, as is "How to conduct like Toscanini"), misguided or inadequately informed recommendations ("How to make great grilled chicken" is simply a recipe for beer can chicken, which isn't at all the same thing), and tongue-in-cheek throwaways. (Under "How to become a billionaire," you find J. Paul Getty's line: "Rise early. Work late. Strike oil." Droll, but not useful.) Some sections are much longer than others, and some rate a "DUH" -- the paragraph on "How to improve your public speaking," for instance, is simply a recommendation for Toastmasters International. And "How to ace an interview" assumes you're an executive (or new B-school grad) trying out for a standardized corporate position, with very little relevancy for those of us in civil service or academia, to say nothing of applicants at Microsoft. "How to train a basset hound" is obviously a humorous paean to the author's pet, drawings of whose mug are scattered throughout the book. But the essay I personally found most informative? "How to select a single malt scotch."

5 out of 5 stars A Delightful and Compelling Read.......2003-03-04

The author clearly did a great deal of research on a broad array of interesting topics. The trenchant and witty manner in which the book is written makes for a decidedly compelling read.

In addition to the standard reference sources, the author also includes many websites for those who wish to obtain additional information on the topics covered.

In sum, I recommend highly this book and hope that the author writes another of this genre. Bravo!

I just received this book as a gift, and it is great. More concise, more informative, and more amusing than any
"For Dummies" title--I highly recommend it. In a short space, the book covers a wide array of topics.

The author clearly has spent a lot time doing serious research for a less-than-serious book. This short reference guide would make a great gift.

Hyaluronic acid is a revolutionary natural molecule that stops or even reverses aging. Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon(early 1500's) searched for the "fountain of youth," crystal waters that natives claimed would instantly endow youth and beauty. Hyaluronic acid is the modern day "fountain of youth." What does it do?

5 out of 5 stars FROM THE AUTHOR.......2001-11-08

Born in Washington, D.C., to one of the First Families of Virginia, Littleton Q. Washington attended Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, before securing a clerkship at the U.S. Treasury Department. In 1855, he joined the U.S. Customs House in San Francisco and became embroiled in that city's Vigilante Uprising. Dismissed from office during James Buchanan's administration, Washington made a wild and dangerous journey home across Mexico, which was then entering a bloody reform war.
An ardent secessionist, Washington secured a lieutenant's commission in the Confederate Army and served at First Bull Run. He briefly edited the Richmond Examiner before joining the Confederate State Department where he worked with Judah Benjamin for the balance of the war. He knew most of the C.S. government's top people and was a close friend of Mary Chesnut.
This journal is a fascinating character study of one man caught up in the most turbulent period of American history.

Littleton Washington's Journal is the assembled character study of Littleton Q. Washington, an ardent secessionist who served as a lieutenant in the Confederate Army at First Bull Run, and later worked with Judah Benjamin for the balance of the war. Though aptly edited by Douglas Gibboney for reader accessibility, and with informative historical notes, Littleton Washington's Journal is almost entirely Littleton's story in his own words. Highly recommended for Civil War buffs interested in seeing the Civil War from the perspective of one of its many soldiers.
