    Book Description

The adoption by the Accounting Standards Board of its Statement of Principles for Financial Reporting in December 1999 means that we now have an authoritative conceptual framework which should govern the production of British financial statements. Yet while the text of the Statement is directed at members of the accounting profession, students of accounting will need to understand the framework and its repercussions.

An Introduction to Modern Financial Reporting Theory explains the content of the Statement in an accessible language, specifically for the student of accounting and finance. This text will be of direct and practical interest to students who need to understand the contents of the new framework, which helps to explain: why and how financial reporting is carried out; why financial statements are prepared in the way that they are; why accounting standards specify one method rather than another; how the methods specified by accounting standards relate to each other; how practice has developed and will continue to develop.

Brian Rutherford emphasizes and enlarges on the key features of the framework, provides many more examples, shows how the framework applies in practice and also offers some criticisms of its content. The book clarifies to students why various methods and practices in accounting have evolved, while illustrating how they relate to each other and to the underlying function of financial reporting.

This text will be essential reading on university and professional courses in advanced financial accounting, particularly courses on Accounting Theory and Financial Reporting.

Brian Rutherford is Professor of Accounting at Canterbury Business School, University Kent at Canterbury.

            Book Description

With the enlargement of the EU in May 2004, the possible enlargement of the Economic and Monetary Union also became an imminent issue: It can be expected that the 12 countries that have introduced the Euro so far will be joined by several others by the end of the decade. In this book, a set of internationally renowned economists from both sides of the Atlantic analyse the challenges that lie in front of the EU as it used to be, the hurdles that have to be cleared by possible candidates, and the impact of these developments on important economic sectors like the financial markets, etc. The scientists are supported by Central Bankers from current and future Euro-zone members who give their views on the problems and chances of Euro-accession. The book is thus providing an overall view of the major developments regarding the Euro in the years to come.

              Book Description

Mercury is one of the more difficult objects for amateur astronomers to observe because of its close proximity to the Sun. For the same reason, it is also one of the most fascinating and strange planets. Mercury is not much larger that our Moon, but orbits the Sun at an average distance of only 58 million km, compared to the Earth’s 150 million km. On its sunlit side, Mercury’s surface temperature can exceed 450C while the night side freezes at –180C.

Mercury has been the target of professional astronomers through the ages, and then of space probes, the most recent of which – MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging) – will go into orbit around Mercury in 2011.

Amateur astronomers can see Mercury and its ever-changing phases all year, and sometimes watch it transit the Sun – the next transit is in November 2006, followed by one in May 2016.

In his inimitable, easy-going style, Patrick Moore describes Mercury, the professional astronomers who have observed it over the centuries, amateur observations, and the past, present and future space missions to this extraordinary world.

                Book Description

Many courses dealing with the material in this text are called "Applications of Group Theory." Emphasizing the central role and primary importance of symmetry in the applications, Symmetry in Bonding and Spectra enables students to handle applications, particularly applications to chemical bonding and spectroscopy. It contains the essential background in vectors and matrices for the applications, along with concise reviews of simple molecular orbital theory, ligand field theory, and treatments of molecular shapes, as well as some quantum mechanics. Solved examples in the text illustrate theory and applications or introduce special points. Extensive problem sets cover the important methods and applications, with the answers in the appendix.

                    Book Description

This book explores ways in which systematic patterns are used to infer evolutionary processes. Among evolutionary biologists and systematists there is a constant interchange between those that study the process of evolution (e.g., mutation, selection, speciation) and those that study its patterns (e.g., variation, geographic distribution, ontogeny, phylogeny). Because patterns influence the development of theories, and processes yield patterns, it is not always easy to distinguish one from another. This book is dialectic and helps crystallize a continuing debate over the relationship of patterns to process theories.

                    Key Features
                    * Contributions by leading systematists, evolutionary biologists, and philosophers
                    * Illustrates the debate over how and if evolutionary processes can be inferred from systematic patterns
                    * Illustrates a continuing interplay between systematics and evolutionary theory

                          Book Description

Packed with never-before-seen photographs, The Kennedy White House reveals the world's most famous family, unstaged and as they were, both behind White House doors and in their private homes in Virginia, Palm Beach, Newport, and Hyannis Port. Carl Sferrazza Anthony's fascinating narrative brings new insight to the Kennedy story, in the first book to place the family within the context of 1960s culture and view historical events uniquely from the personal perspective of their family life. A candid and compelling tour, The Kennedy White House "takes you inside the world's most famous goldfish bowl for a glimpse at life in the White House as you've never seen it before" (Julie N. Eisenhower).

This book is great. I love the pictures, but some of the text was too boring for me. I was only interested in the parts of text that had "Caroline" or "John, Jr." in them. A lot of the pictures I have never seen before and it was a joy to see them in this book!

5 out of 5 stars nice pictures (and text).......2005-12-22

This book is primarily worth it for the mnay great photos of JFK and Jackie, especially of the White House rooms themselves. That said, the text is pretty good, as well. Two items of interest--that isn't J. Edgar Hoover behind Jackie on the front cover but lookalike Secret Service agent Stewart G. "Stu" Stout, Jr. Also, I like the picture of Marilyn Monroe with Secret Service agent Floyd M. Boring (wearing glasses) in front of her on the steps!

What a classy book that one is! The White House as it was at the time of the Kennedys... and looking at some of those never seen before pictures, we can relive the elegance, charm and grace of that unique period. Two thumbs up Mr. Sferrazza!!

                          4 out of 5 stars Nicely Done.......2002-02-13

While the pictures are, for the most part, fantastic, the author does tend to make outlandish claims about some of them...The ONLY picture of JFK holding one of his kids, or the ONLY picture of him with Dr. Max Jacobson. Simply not the case! A little more care with details like that would have been nice!

And PS RED Fay did not serve aboard PT 100, as is claimed in the book.

This is not the best book about JFK I have ever read, but it is up there. I like the pictures on pages 16 (all) 20, 173, 192-199, 268-275, and 242-258. This book is recommended for any Kennedy fan of all ages.

This is a great picture book. I have almost every Kennedy family picture book available. I just happen to come across it in a bookstore near my home. I paid $19.99 for it, pretty good price. You can get here for about $16-17 but remember you have to pay shipping. So it comes out to more but it is soo worth it. When you are going through these pics its like being taken back in time. I'm pretty young my mom was born in 1957 so she was about Caroline's age when these pics were taken.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding pictures, good text.......2005-12-21

I highly recommend this book, primarily for the great picutures of JFK. This 40th anniversary volume succeeds in presenting many rare and never-before-seen photos. I especially like the ones depicting Secret Service agent Gerald Blaine on the rear of the limousine in Italy 7/63. Get this!

"John Fitzgerald Kennedy:A Life in Pictures"is a great way to remember President Kennedy.I'm a young, strong admirer of President Kennedy, and not only are there great pictures of Kennedy, there is a biography of Kennedy with speeches he made, including the speech he was going to make on November 22,1963.The best pictures are of Kennedy with Herbert Hoover and a picture of Jack Kennedy with his daughter Caroline and his niece Maria Shriver.I have seen a bunch of great Kennedy photos, and if you ever want the best Kennedy photo, buy Robert Stack's autobiography "Straight Shooting"and see the picture of Stack and Kennedy. "John Fitzgerald Kennedy:A Life In Pictures"is a must read for all Kennedy fans and even all non-Kennedy fans.

This collection of over 300 pages of the usual suspected photographs, as well as many unseen or rare ones, was published to commemorate the passing of 40 years since our 35th President was vicously cut down in his prime.

The layout of the photographs is great. You see JFK throughout his life, from childhood, to Presidencey and every passing moment between. The photos are powerful, moving, show glamour and fun, you see a politician throughout his political career, you see a loving father, son, brother and husband. I have had quite a few photo books on JFk, but this is by far the best and most desirable one I have seen.

This photograph book would make a wonderful and truly appriciated gift for anyone who has any respect, love or interest in JFK. My sister is a huge JFK fan, she had a bust of him on our dresser growing up.

The price on Amazon, is as always, unbeatable. I saw this at a bookstore tonight for the full price.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy: A Life In Pictures is an impressive photographic gallery and the collaborative effort of Yann-Brice Dherbier and Pierre-Henri Verlhac in celebration of JFK. Very little text is present; almost all of John Fitzgerald Kennedy: A Life in Pictures is dedicated to allowing the black-and-white and color photographs speak for themselves, with only a brief introduction leading into the compilation and a quick byline for each image to clarify the photograph's setting and the people it depicts. A visual treasury, moving to page through and recommended for any truly interested in seeing President Kennedy's life revealed, from early years to his untimely death.

                              Book Description

When the Tehran mob broke into the Russian embassy and murdered its diplomats, the dead toll included one of the most brilliant and promising stars in the early 19th-century Russian literary and political firmament: Alexander Griboyedov. In this first biography of Griboyedov in English, Laurence Kelly paints a vivid picture of his remarkable literary and diplomatic gifts which were nevertheless overshadowed by tragedy. His book makes an invaluable contribution to the diplomatic history of Russia, the Caucasus, and Iran, while at the same time shedding much new light on the life and works of a writer and diplomat of considerable importance.

4 out of 5 stars Diplomacy and Murder in Tehran : Alexander Griboyedov and the Tsar's Mission to the Shah of Persia.......2006-03-08

A century and a half before Iranian radicals seized the U.S. embassy and took fifty-two hostages, a frenzied Iranian mob spurred on by the mullahs stormed the Russian legation in Tehran and massacred all but one member of the mission. Among those murdered was Alexander Griboyedov, playwright and Russia's chief diplomat in Tehran. While largely forgotten, the massacre illustrates yet another example of the Iranian clergy's xenophobic and violent reaction to foreign challenges.

In 1828, the tsar dispatched Griboyedov to Iran in order to implement the humiliating Treaty of Turkmanchai that ended the second Russo-Iranian war. Under terms of the treaty, Iran forever forfeited its claim to what is now Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia; paid exorbitant reparations; and granted diplomatic immunity and other privileges for Russian merchants.

The treaty's implementation was complicated by a culture clash. Griboyedov offended the royal court by not removing his boots in front of the shah and further antagonized the shah by demanding the release of numerous Christian slaves seized by Iran in the preceding decades.

Well-written, with extensive notes and sixty-five illustrations, Diplomacy and Murder in Tehran is worth the price for those interested in the tragic life of a young writer and diplomat. For historians of Iran, however, the value will be limited. Kelly seeks to absolve the English from persistent accusations that they egged on the Iranian mobs who slaughtered the Griboyedov mission. Point taken, but irrelevant to all but one hundred or so historians of Qajar-era Iran.

Diplomacy and Murder in Tehran is not for those seeking a more general introduction into Iranian history. Less than one-quarter of the text follows Griboyedov's experiences in Tehran and Tabriz. Other chapters cover his experiences in Georgia and the Crimea and Griboyedov's early life in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Far more engaging for those interested in the great diplomatic competition between Russia and Britain over Iran and Central Asia will be Peter Hopkirk's Great Game, a broader account of the spies and diplomats sent into deadly competition in the region. Also excellent is Denis Wright's The English amongst the Persians, which reproduces excerpts and accounts from a number of early visitors. While many accounts exist of Europeans' experiences in the Middle East, readers may enjoy the opposite in English translation of the diary of Nasir ad-Din Shah (r. 1848-96) during his 1873 European tour.

Though Thekla Clark turned down a marriage proposal from W.H. Auden in the early 1950s, she remained close to the poet and his companion Chester Kallman until Auden's death in 1973. In memoir, Clark follows the lives of this unconventional couple, recalling their home on the Italian island of Ischia, their romps through Europe, and the more troubling times Auden spent in New York. While Kallman embraced his homosexuality and was campily outrageous, Auden was uncomfortable in his and became conservative and conventional. Despite their differences, or maybe because of them, their relationship endured--they met in 1939 and Kallman died less than two years after Auden, seemingly of a broken heart.

In her recent memoir of the time of her life that she spent with Wystan and Chester, Thekla Clark gives us an unassuming and very personal view of these two great characters of the 20th. century. Although I probably should'nt compare the two, it is a far more personal and approachable account than that of Richard Davenport-Hines' very bookish biography, which I have also just read.(Perhaps they should be read in series to balance things out a bit!) In any case, Thekla Clark's love for these two is apparent and charming, as her perception of the moralistic age in which they were forced to live. A must-read for any Audenophile or Kallmanist!
