Book Description
A manufacturing company is downsizing and wants to know the impact on employee morale. A computer corporation is considering moving its headquarters and needs to determine how many employees intend to relocate. A multinational consulting firm has had a rash of sexual harassment complaints and seeks to determine the extent of the problem. To address these and other business-related issues, organizations are increasingly turning to surveys. Surveys are popular in organizations because--when done properly--they can provide accurate information about major organizational challenges, especially as the technology of surveys rapidly advances. Taking these issues into consideration, How to Conduct Organizational Surveys offers a practical, step-by-step guide. Anyone trying to make the transition from theory to practice will benefit greatly from this how-to guide. How to Conduct Organizational Surveys is also written for researchers who need to fine-tune their surveying skills.

Me Talk Pretty One Day
ASIN: 074327394X |
Book Description
From the #1 bestselling author of Me Talk Pretty One Day and Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim comes a collection of the short stories David Sedaris loves most. Containing the work of both contemporary and classic writers,
CHILDREN PLAYING BEFORE A STATUE OF HERCULES, edited and introduced by Sedaris, gives his legions of fans a glimpse at the writing he finds inspiring - and helps them discover the truth about loneliness, hope, love, betrayal, and certain, but not all, monkeys.
David Sedaris fell in love with short stories while living in Odell, Oregon. Sedaris writes, "When apple-picking season ended, I got a job in a packing plant and gravitated toward short stories, which I could read during my break and reflect upon for the remainder of my shift. A good one would take me out of myself and stuff me back in, outsized, now, and uneasy with the fit." Featuring such notable writers as Alice Munro, Tobias Wolff, Lorrie Moore, and Joyce Carol Oates, readers will reconnect with classics, as well discover fantastic but lesser-known writers.
Included in
CHILDREN PLAYING BEFORE A STATUE OF HERCULES are:
- Introduction by David Sedaris
- "Oh, Joseph, I'm So Tired" by Richard Yates
- "Gryphon" by Charles Baxter
- "Interpreter of Maladies" by Jhumpa Lahiri
- "The Garden Party" by Katherine Mansfield
- "Half A Grapefruit" by Alice Munro
- "Applause, Applause" by Jean Thompson
- "I Know What I'm Doing About All the Attention I've Been Getting" by Frank Gannon
- "Where the Door Is Always Open and the Welcome Mat Is Out" by Patricia Highsmith
- "The Best of Betty" by Jincy Willett
- "Song of the Shirt, 1941" by Dorothy Parker
- "The Girl with the Blackened Eye" by Joyce Carol Oates
- "People Like That Are the Only People Here: Canonical Babbling in Peed Onk" by Lorrie Moore
- "Revelation" by Flannery O'Connor
- "In the Cemetery Where Al Jolson Is Buried" by Amy Hempel
- "Cosmopolitan" by Akhil Sharma
- "Irish Girl" by Tim Johnston
- "Bullet in the Brain" by Tobias Wolff
- Epilogue by Sarah Vowell
Borrowing the book's name from an Adriaen van der Werff painting,
CHILDREN PLAYING BEFORE A STATUE OF HERCULES is David Sedaris's attempt to share his passion for short stories with a wider audience-and his enthusiasm is contagious. "The authors in this book are huge to me, and I am a comparative midget, scratching around in their collective shadow. 'Pint sized Fanatic Bowing Before Statues of Hercules' might have been more concise, but people don't paint things like that, and besides, it doesn't sound as good."
David Sedaris is publishing this book to support 826NYC, a nonprofit tutoring center in Brooklyn, New York. All of his proceeds, after permission expenses, from
CHILDREN PLAYING BEFORE A STATUE OF HERCULES will benefit this organization designed to help students ages six to eighteen develop their writing skills through free writing workshops, publishing projects, and one-on-one help with homework and English-language learning. In the book's epilogue, Sarah Vowell describes the fine work done by 826NYC.

Thank You.......2007-06-29
When I buy a new cookbook, if I find three or four killer recipes, I count my purchase a success. The same might be said for short story compilations. I thank Mr. Sedaris for introducing me to Richard Yates, Charles Baxter and Jhumpa Lahiri. Mr. Yates' story is one of the finest works of short fiction I have ever read, up there with Delmore Schwartz's "In Dreams Begin Responsibilities." The final lines of Jean Thompson's story are absolutely beautiful -- I can't get them out of my head.
Beautiful contemporary collection............2007-01-10
....For people with a bit of an off-the-wall sense of looking at the world. If you're looking for a Norman Rockwell-ish collection of Americana, you won't find it here. If, however, you are more into the offbeat, it's a great late-night read. In other words, great collection.
Good quality item........2006-07-27
The book I ordered was in great condition. It arrived extremely quickly after I ordered it. I was very satisfied with my purchase - overall a great transaction!
Stories.......2006-04-29
This is a collection of stories hand-picked by essayist David Sedaris who also edited the collection and provides the introduction. This is an okay read if you like dark, funny stories.
Thought-provoking stories for our time.......2006-03-02
This is a compilation of David Sedaris' favorite short stories by literary greats such as Alice Munro, Flannery O'Connor and Dororthy Parker, just to name a few. With a crowd like this, you can expect stories that will leave you ever so slightly unsettled, such as Tobias Wolff's "Bullet in the Brain" and Lorrie Moore's troubling tromp through a pediatric cancer ward in "People Like That Are the Only People Here: Canonical Babbling in Peed Onk." The stories seem to gather eccentric value as the book progresses. They are provocative and probably not best read right before bed. But Sedaris has indeed gathered the best of the best, and each of the stories represents an intricate piece of literary art.
But there is another reason to buy this book. All the proceeds benefit 826NYC, an afterschool tutoring organization that also does community outreach by way of writing workshops for young people. Literature to help foster literature-it is a great idea and one worthy of support.

Don't Get Too Comfortable
Manufacturer: Doubleday
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: B000ANE77E |
Product Description
The title of this collection of humorous essays could also serve as a warning label for its readers. They'll want to stay on guard as GQ writer-at-large Rakoff (Fraud) skewers everything and everyone he encounters. His writing is at its best when trained on the pompous and ostentatious: flying on the Concorde or visiting an exclusive, $1,300-a-night resort off Belize. While attending the Paris couture shows, Rakoff reveals the silliness of the whole enterprise with quips about Karl Lagerfeld's preweight loss "large doughy rump" and the "dry spaghetti" of one model's hair. In another piece, a prominent Beverly Hills plastic surgeon tells Rakoff, "this is the Dark Ages" for cosmetic surgery (meaning that future generations will be amazed by the inevitable advances) before taking him into an examination room. While Rakoff's sardonic wit is clearly his greatest asset, it is sometimes his undoing; the same dry humor that works so well when aimed at the rich and decadent seems mean-spirited when applied to less prominent targets, like "Wildman" Steve Brill, who forages for food in New York City's parks. Still, Rakoff is generally a knowing observer of "first world problems," and his devilishly uncomfortable commentaries are generally quite funny.

Book Description
A Family Place is an evocative, first-person account of Leila Philip's search to uncover and then to come to terms with her family's rich and complicated past. This is a past populated by manor lords and tenant farmers, romantic-era gentlemen farmers and Civil War heroes, wealthy ne'er-do- wells, renegade aunts, and secret children, all of them inextricably linked to a white-columned mansion named Talavera, located two hours from New York City in the Hudson Valley.
Today, Talavera is managed as a commercial fruit farm called Philip Orchards. Since inheriting the estate after their father's death in 1992, Leila Philip and her four siblings have struggled to find the means to keep the house intact and the land from being consumed by development. This uphill battle has forced Philip to ask: What compels a family to risk everythingfinancial well-being, its place in the modern world, even each other to hold on to a piece of land?
In her quest for answers, Philip began researching her family's unbreakable bond with this remarkable place. From 1730, the first year of the family tenure on the land, to the present, A Family Place chronicles a fascinating history that is full of surprises. Like Tobias Wolff's This Boy's Life and Kathleen Norris's Dakota, A Family Place is both deeply personal and broadly resonant as her search becomes entangled in the tensions between memory and recorded fact.
Customer Reviews:
This had fantastic potential..........2002-04-06
I was disappointed in this book. The Hudson Valley is a magnificent well for story tellers and I was excited to read about the generations who had lived in a single home and worked on its orchard.
This is much more a creative writing guide than a history of a house/family. Philip spends chapters describing the writing process, but not enough about the actual home/family. The writing parts would have made an excellent preface, but the book needed more substantative history.
Too often Philips interupts herself to backtrack to modern times.
This had great potential, but left me looking for another book.
Delightful read.......2002-02-12
Evocative, elegant account of family history, deftly blending geneology with present day realities. Highly enjoyable read~
A Great Read.......2002-01-08
After all the books about houses in France and Italy, it's nice to see a truly American story about a house and the family that has owned and loved it for nearly 200 years. Philip deftly interweaves the personal and the historical into a memorable narrative. Although nonfiction, the book's flow and vivid descriptions make it read like almost like a novel. Talvera may be the most interesting American country house since Tara.

Book Description
In this luminous memoir, award-winning author Leila Philip tells the story of her ancestral Hudson River home, Talavera, the mystery of her attachment to it, and her search to come to terms with the truth about her family's fascinating three-century history there. After her father's death in 1992, Philip and her family struggled to find the means to keep Talavera intact. This uphill battle led her to examine the forces that compel a family to sacrifice almost everything to hold on to a piece of land. In a historical quest both surprising and engaging, Philip addresses the tensions between memory and recorded fact and invites readers to take a new look at their own sense of home.
Customer Reviews:
Read it once, then read it again........2004-01-27
Philip will not let us have what we are expecting - a rose-tinted reminiscence of home and place, with the occaisional failure thrown in for good measure. Instead, we get a "widening gyre" of tales, passing spirally through history, through the process of discovering history, the way in which Philip records this history, and ultimately, the way in which we read it. The book is about her home, and yet it is not. It is about personal loss, and yet it is not. It is about the balance between artifacts and memories, and yet -
Read the book, but know that its success lies in that it does not simply end with the last page, but recycles back to its own beginning, and to the readers'.
Warm and Delightful!! Very enjoyable read............2003-08-17
Having my own family roots in a neighboring county, I found "A Family Place" a most enjoyable and delightful read. In her love for family as well as curisoity for her roots, Ms. Philip takes us with her as she searches through boxes and closets for pieces of her past. I have known those boxes and closets too! And I know the feel of barefeet on lawns and skipping around cow patties.... I highly reccomend this book to anyone who has or wishes they had a special family. It may even inspire you to do some personal sleuthing yourself. Enjoy!

Experience North Florida; the Travelers' Best-Kept Secret.......2001-05-10
Author Betsy James has managed to capture the true flavor and intrigue of the northern half of Florida, a place not frequented by the Pink Flamingo Set. No "World of Beer", "World of 'Gators", mouse-eared tourists or drunk preppies crowding the beach at springtime break. James describes, instead, a quiet, spanish-moss draped world of small-town life, sparsely populated with colorful characters and full of lore and mystery. Her short little stories, brimming with native charm, fit into today's busy lifestyle. The slim paperback is portable and a reader can finish a story in the span of a coffee break, or a couple of stories while the baby naps.
For travers looking for a different sort of experience, James accurately describes Florida's best-kept secret in her first book. Read "Sandspurs and Sawgrass" and then plan a vacation along the northern gulf coast of Florida to experience it for yourself.
The Landscape of North Florida Jumps Off the Page.......2001-02-11
The pristine north Florida landscape jumps off the page at you, as do the characters in this awesome book by Betsy James. The stories are tinged with humor and melancholy, also You'll read about the ghosts of the Drew Mansion and moonshiner Louis Hill, a true-to-life Madison County, Florida legend.Thank you, Betsy James, for introducing the world to north Florida and all our interesting people

A wonderful guide.......2007-09-30
Guide Books along the Spiritual Path of Grief
In her famous 1969 book, On Death and Dying, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross identified the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. These stages do not occur in so neat and predictable a sequence, but are more like a cycle of radically charged raw feelings erupting from catastrophic personal loss (job, income, freedom, loved one). Anne Lamott writing in Traveling Mercies, compares this time of chaos to a turntable: Grief, as I read somewhere once, is a lazy Susan. One day it is heavy and underwater, and the next day it spins and stops at loud and rageful, and the next day at wounded keening, and the next day numbness, silence.
Grief raises the tough questions that require spiritual answers found in the transcendent wisdom shared by those who have gone before and now serve as guides along this path of many detours and deaths. Here are a few resources that may ease the way. Allow them to help you with any grief no matter how old or unresolved. Unhealed grief lives on in wait of the next loss and the next chance to find peace. Maybe Thoreau had a similar thought in mind when he wrote, That part of you that is wettest is fullest of life.
Speaking to grief's many moods, Barbara Lazear Ascher, whose journey of grieving began when she learns her brother has AIDS, observes in Landscape Without Gravity: A Memoir of Grief: Grief is like the wind. When it's blowing hard, you adjust your sails and run before it. If it blows too hard, you stay in the harbor, close the hatches and don't take calls. When it's gentle, you go sailing, have a picnic, take a swim.
At 32, while 2½ months pregnant, Stephanie Ericsson, author of Companion Through the Darkness: inner dialogues on grief, lost her husband to a heart attack, and came to see grief as a dress rehearsal, Grief is the time when we are blessed with the opportunity to complete a natural process of spiritual death and rebirth before our own death. This book speaks of the complex and often taboo emotions we all feel when loss transforms our lives.
In his collection of essays about faith and fiction, The Clown in the Belfry, Frederick Buechner observes this about life and death: If the Lord is indeed our shepherd, then everything goes topsy-turvy. Losing becomes finding and crying becomes laughing. The last become first and the weak become strong. Instead of life being done in by death in the end as we always supposed, death is done in finally by life in the end. If the Lord is our host at the great feast, then the sky is the limit.
Rabbi David Wolpe of Sinai Temple in Los Angeles, writes of his own grief through the experience of losing his wife to cancer. In Making Loss Matter: Creating Meaning in Difficult Times, he shares thoughts on enduring a broken heart: The only whole heart is a broken one. No awake spirit can move through this world without enduring a broken heart. There is nothing real that makes life painless. Accepting the pain of living, knowing one's heart will -- and should -- be broken, is the beginning of wisdom.
I end with the words of the great Sufi poet Rumi on the gift of tears:
The cloud weeps, and then the garden sprouts.
The baby cries, and the mother's milk flows.
The Nurse of Creation has said, Let them cry a lot.
This rain-weeping and sun-burning twine together
to make us grow. Keep your intelligence white-hot
and your grief glistening, so your life will stay fresh.
Cry easily like a little child.

A Profoundly Beautiful Work..........1997-08-01
This is a powerful work of art in which the author gives life and meaning to the death of her only brother. Her journey of grieving begins the moment she learns her brother has AIDS, and we are privileged to share her experiences in the ensuing years without him. The death of a sibling is a topic that is often dismissed or diminished in its importance. In our society one is not expected to grieve so deeply or mourn so intensely the loss of one's brother or sister. Such mourning is reserved and more accepted for one's parent, spouse, or child. This starkly honest work, at once both intensely personal and profoundly universal, will forever erase any doubt that one might have had about the impact of sibling death, and provide comfort to all who have experienced such a loss.
In Landscape Without Gravity, Barbara Ascher has recorded with great skill and insight the experience of grieving. She has given words to those unspoken feelings that all who grieve have struggled with, but have often been unable to express. Whether read by one who has experienced the death of a sibling, or by one who has lost a child, this book can serve as a support to all who seek comfort in the experiences of another who has journeyed before them. We witness the humility and understanding that can appear when one is willing to meet grief head on
