Good Tips for Managing People.......2000-07-14

The book was the main text book in one of my MBA classes. The class taught how to deal with people in a variety of situations. The book is best used in this setting. A majority of the pages describe several role playing situations and there's also feedback forms on how you did. So it's nice to have someone to do the role plays with you. If you are just going to read the book, it gives a short synopsis of what you need to foucs on in each "tip".

Effective for building soft skills.......2000-05-02

This book ensures group interaction and discussions in any training situation. I first used this book in a business graduate course and I found the role plays very helpful. Unlike many other books I have used, these role plays are effective and don't make the students feel silly. Each chapter begins with a self-assessment exercise and end with a concise quiz and summary.

The format of this book is unique and interesting. The author has taken great care to write in the style of the Regency period. The characters, for the most part were dealt with in a manner true to the original stories. A great summer afternoon read.

This was a very fast read but to anyone that loves Darcy and Elizabeth this is a must own! As in the first book, the letters are compelling and so well written that you can certainly follow what has happened through out the years -- and not wonder about possible gaps. Enjoyable from the first letter to the last!

A little too sad but worthwhile.......2007-03-09

Like its predecessor, this was a very easy and pleasant read. At one point, a little too sad and tragic for me but pleasing overall. The book provides a satisfying portrayal of the Darcys. As was Letters from Pemberley: The First Year, this is one of the better sequels to PnP.

Starts as good as the fist, BUT . . . .......2006-10-18

P&P is one of my favorite books. I love Jane Austen so much that I did an independent study in college on Jane Austen! I bought both Letters books based on customer reviews that I would not be disappointed. The first was wonderful, and the second began that way, but loving Austen the way I do, I can trust her not to induce tears. This book became heart wrenching toward the end. I escape to other worlds when this one is too harsh, so being slapped in the face with such raw tragedy here was both unexpected and more than troublesome.

I wish I had left off with the first book.

What a delight this book is! If you are familiar with Austin's other works besides Pride and Prejudice, you pick up on who the letters are addressed to. This book is like receiving letters from dear friends.

Great primary source for World War 2.......2007-02-22

Ciano's Diaries are an invaluable resource to scholars who want to study the diplomacy of the Nazi's and Italy in World War 2. For those who are just causal readers of history these diaries will probably not be of interest. For the scholars of Europe they are essential. These are great and honest reports of what Italy under Mussolini was thinking. Ciano's second set of diaries paints the dark days of World War 2 for Italy and how the regime was on the brink of collapsing. Ciano himself would be executed as a traitor by the end but he and a small group worked to preserve Italy. The diplomatic maneuverings between the Germans, Russians and the Allies are captured here in unabashed detail making for interesting reading. For those who want to understand the diplomatic realties of World War 2 this is essential.

A must-read for WWII buffs..........2006-06-26

I had been wanting to read Count Ciano's Diaries for years because I kept seeing quotations from them in all sorts of books on the period. They did not disappoint! Count Ciano had a front row seat to the whole show. Well, up until early '43 when the Nazis shot him... It truly is an amazing perspective on the war. Ciano vacillates between fear and admiration for the Nazis, as their fortunes run hot and cold. He pouts when Hitler does things behind the backs of the Italians, yet he gleefully acknowledges every time the Italians attempt to pay the Nazis back in their own coin. It's stunning to see how completely incompetent the Italians were in military affairs, and how incapable they were of reversing their fortunes. They stuck with much of the same military leadership throughout the conflict, despite their constant bumbling. More than anything it was a text that had me questioning why the Axis could be so stupid as to extend a war that they hadn't won. After the fall of France those must have been heady days for the Axis leadership. The world stretched before them. You really get a sense of this reading the diaries. Yet Hitler attacks the Soviet Union with the UK at his back. Inconceivable! Even Mussolini attacks Greece when he had more fighting than he could handle in the sands of Egypt. Looking back it takes your breath away. What if these guys hadn't pushed their luck way too far?

A Historically and Politically important work.......2003-02-13

There are very few published writings by those that sat in positions of power during the period leading up to and during the Second World War that are of this personal and telling nature. This is the great difference between Ciano's Diary and the writing of the defeated or victorious from this time.
Ciano was not looking back and writing in an attempt to absolve himself of his role nor was he allowing the glow of victory to taint his recollection of events.
These sometimes seemingly shallow entries in his personal diary can allow us to view events of unfathomable consequence from his seat and without the ideological raging or gossamer thin excuses and attempts at self absolution of many other works; Albert Speer being a prime example of the latter; written by politicians or those that held office at this time.
To read this Diary in search of ideological or moral answers would be misdirected but to study this Diary and gain insight into Ciano, Mussolini and the machinations and power struggles of what was in reality a far from stable Dictatorship with an often tenuous alliance with Hitler's Reich would be to serve yourself well. This is a work that no scholar of Politics or History should overlook.

Rather pointless exercise..........2002-10-21

This diary has little interest: no political analysis and no view on military affairs... obviously Ciano and the rest of the Italian government and military have no clue about what's happening around them. They keep saying stupidly: 'this war is going to be long'. Needless to say, not a world of moral or ethical judgment.

Most entries are criticism of some inept Italian General (too fat, and dyes his hair !), complaints about the Germans , or complaints about Albanians stealing silver cutlery at official dinners. Admittedly there is some emotion after 1942 when they start to realize that everything is going wrong, but the psychological analysis is very shallow (Ciano merely notes the 'depressed' mood of everybody after 1942). Nothing about Ciano's personal life in Rome's upper class, which would probably have been more interesting.

For a clever (too clever ?) Italian view of the war, read Kaputt, by Curzio Malaparte.

Offers great historical insight.......2002-02-24

Written as personal diary, this book offers a keen insight into the events leading to World War II. Count Ciano, Mussolini's son-in-law, served as his foreign minister. Ciano opposed Italy's participation in the war and disliked Hitler. Yet Ciano also has his share of faults and moments of poor judgement. Undoutedly one of the most honest books from the period. The editing is often uneven. Some material contained is trite. The last entry, when Ciano knows he willbe executed by the Fascist puppet state, is quite moving.

Shaker Ghost Stories is a collection of true experiences from the visitors to and employees at Shakertown, Pleasant Hill, Kentucky. Pleasant Hill has been 200 years in existence, and is one of the restored Shaker villages in the Eastern United States. Those who come find a spiritual touchstone in walking the land, hearing Shaker music, and marveling at their craftsmanship. Some of those who work or visit there have discovered that some Shaker spirits have perhaps returned to Pleasant Hill. The collection of odd occurrences reported in Shaker Ghost Stories include mysterious singing, phantom footsteps, appearances and disappearances of Shaker-looking people, invisible helping hands, and the sights and sounds of work and worship continuing at odd hours. The Shaker spirits seem to act much in character with their original dispositions-demonstrating faith, fervor, and a guardianship of their homes and land. Traveling East in 1990, Thomas Freese visited friends, looking to relocate from New Mexico. Thomas was intrigued by Shakertown and the lives and accomplishments of the Shakers. He moved to Lexington the following year, and in 1996 became one of the Pleasant Hill Singers. While learning and performing Shaker music, he heard his new friends often speak of their "Shaker experiences", occasional and unusual happenings. Boosted buy their encouragement, he spent the summer of 1998 taking notes and collecting accounts of the Shaker Ghost Stories.

Thomas Freese brings to life the beautiful village of Pleasant Hill with the always present ghost that haunt there. He has an excellent style of writing that introduces you to some fine people who have worked there and visited there. He tells of their experiences and makes you want to go experience those same ghost as well. This book is a thrill for all ages.

A book for everybody's "must read" list.......2005-10-26

This is an excellent, entertaining, accurate of the "Shaker Experience" told by the people who actually experienced them. When I read this book, I immediately wanted to go to Pleasant Hill to experience these things for myself. Once you start this book, you will not put it down until you finish it!

A fine offering of cultural ghost tales.......2005-10-06

Mr. Freese has not only succeeded at giving his readers a hearty serving of ghost stories -- he has also given them the full flavor of Shaker culture. As a lover of ghost stories, I found these Shaker ghost stories believable and was pleased that the stories were told to the author by those who live in, work in, and visit the village. Mr. Freese's literary skill, blended with his interviewing techniques, has resulted in an easy-to-read book that you will want to keep on your bookshelf.

Being a Kentuckian, I was eager to read Freese's book on Shaker Ghost Stories of Pleasant Hill. His words and descriptions make me feel as if I'm walking the village road at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. I enjoyed the interview format he used and how he introduced the employees of Shaker Village, they are people that I can relate to with down to earth values and experiences of the ghosts at Shaker Village. As I read, I felt as if I were there, exploring the buildings and searching for ghosts or their stories, just as Freese has done. Excellent writing and highly recommended to anyone who enjoys "historical" ghost stories.

Wonderful Book..........2003-04-17

Paul Reese was a miracle. I had read a number of books about people that walked across America, but a marathon a day?!?! You will be inspired. Written in a very straight forward manner, it won't be the poetry of the words that get you, it will be the poetry of this man's amazing spirit that will make you a fan. I highly recomend this book.

Great book for Ultra runners!.......2002-05-01

I found this book totally addictive. It was a day-to-day journal of Paul Reece's Run X USA and the things he saw and did with his wife! This book sucked me right in and I wasn't able to put it down!! Lots of tips for wana-be runners and those who are veterans! Great tips for getting on the open road and what to watch out for! Fantastic book! Made me want to RUN!!
