Book Description
With highly negative stereotypes circulating about "X'ers," all managers have a clear and justifiable prerogative for reading Naked Management if they want to successfully navigate through what has been dubbed the "X-Crisis." Learn how to overcome worker apathy and management resentment. Naked Management is the first book to provide honest, practical guidelines for managers who need to deal with motivating the "X-Generation" and creating a positive impact on morale and productivity while putting a halt to turnover. Learn the critical tools both managers and younger employees need to put to use in order to create and maintain a successful workplace environment. Through a wide variety of exercises, management and employees alike have opportunities to explore feelings, evaluate performance and management techniques, define personal identity, and complete checklists on such topics as responsibility and management values. Let actual case examples demonstrate how the NAKED model impacts the work life of managers and X'ers in such organizations as PepsiCo, Ritz-Carlton hotels, NationsBank, Kinko's, Tulane University, Jiffy Lube, and United Airlines.

Naked Dreck!.......2000-10-04
As a GenX manager at a "DotCom" company, I expected this book to be full of insight into my employees. The major problem is that this book is hopelessly outdated!
I says that it was published in 1996, but I imagine the research was done way before that. The entire first chapter is devoted to the terrible job market and how GenX'ers do not have the opportunities their parents had, and ad nauseum. The main point of the book is interesting, but common sense: Treat your employees like adults, not children and they won't throw tantrums.
Also, I found it very annoying that everything had to do with X. "X'ercises" at the end of each chapter, being "over X-tended". How trite can you get?
As a GenX'er, I actually felt a bit insulted by this book. There isn't any real difference between our generations and other; they are really only perceived, and propagated by books like this one!
Buy this book if you have absolutely no people skills or knowledge of how to deal with people. Then again, should you really be in management if you don't?

Book Description
The founding of the Dudley Observatory at Albany, N.Y., in 1852 was a milestone in humanity's age-old quest to understand the heavens. As the best equipped astronomical observatory in the U.S. led by the first American to hold a Ph.D. in astronomy, Benjamin Apthorp Gould Jr., the observatory helped pioneer world-class astronomy in America. It also proclaimed Albany's status as a major national center of culture, knowledge and affluence. This book explores the story of the Dudley Observatory as a 150 year long episode in civic astronomy. The story ranges from a bitter civic controversy to a venture into space, from the banks of the Hudson River to the highlands of Argentina. It is a unique glimpse at a path not taken, a way of doing science once promising, now vanished. As discoveries by the Dudley Observatory's astronomers, especially its second director Lewis Boss, made significant contributions to the modern vision of our Milky Way galaxy as a rotating spiral of more than a million stars, the advance of astronomy left that little observatory behind.

Customer Reviews:
how about an update?.......2005-07-25
Like a recently reviewed Kirk-Othmer text that was from 1995, this reference book could do with an updated edition. Indeed as I write this, perhaps that is in the works. The current volumes were published in 1989 and were an excellent synopsis of the uses of lasers in this field.
But there has been much progress with lasers in the interim. The book touches briefly on the femtosecond pulsed lasers. Actually, these were then using pulses on the order of 100 fm, and it was all still very experimental. Now, in the last 16 years, the usage of pulsing in the sub-100 fm range is far more common for studying fast reactions, amongst other applications. Though to what extent these lasers are used in polymer work, I do not know. But a newer edition might disperse this uncertainty.

Book Description
Known and loved around the world for her sweeping Big Stone Gap trilogy and the instant New York Times bestseller
Lucia, Lucia, Adriana Trigiani returns to the charm and drama of small-town life with
Queens of the Big Time. This heartfelt story of the limits and power of love chronicles the remarkable lives of the Castellucas, an Italian-American family, over the course of three generations.
In the late 1800s, the residents of a small village in the Bari region of Italy, on the shores of the Adriatic Sea, made a mass migration to the promised land of America. They settled in Roseto, Pennsylvania, and re-created their former lives in their new home–down to the very last detail of who lived next door to whom. The village’s annual celebration of Our Lady of Mount Carmel–or “the Big Time,” as the occasion is called by the young women who compete to be the pageant’s Queen–is the centerpiece of Roseto’s colorful old-world tradition.
The industrious Castellucas farm the land outside Roseto. Nella, the middle daughter of five, aspires to a genteel life “in town,” far from the rigors of farm life, which have taken a toll on her mother and forced her father to take extra work in the slate quarries to make ends meet. But Nella’s dreams of making her own fortune shift when she meets Renato Lanzara, the son of a prominent Roseto family. Renato is a worldly, handsome, devil-may-care poet who has a way with words that makes him irresistible. Their friendship ignites into a fiery romance that Nella is certain will lead to marriage. But Nella is not alone in her pursuit: every girl in town seems to want Renato. When he disappears without explanation, Nella is left with a shattered heart. Four years later, Renato’s sudden return to Roseto the night before Nella’s wedding to the steadfast Franco Zollerano leaves her and the Castelluca family shaken. For although Renato has chosen a path very different from Nella’s, they are fated to live and work in Roseto, where the past hangs over them like a brewing storm.
An epic of small-town life, etched in glorious detail in the trademark Trigiani style,
The Queen of the Big Time is the story of a determined, passionate woman who can never forget her first love.

CHAPTER ONE
Today is the day my teacher, Miss Stoddard, comes to see my parents. She sent them a letter telling them she wanted to come to our house to discuss ¿the further education of Nella Castelluca.¿ The letter is official, it was written on a typewriter, signed by my teacher with a fountain pen, dated October 1, 1924, and at the top there¿s a gold stamp that says pennsylvania education authority. We never get fancy mail on the farm, only handwritten letters from our relatives in Italy. Mama is saving the envelope from Miss Stoddard for me in a box where she keeps important papers. Sometimes I ask her to show it to me, and every time I read it, I am thrilled all over again.
I hope my parents decide to let me go to school in Roseto. Delabole School only goes to the seventh grade, and I¿ve repeated it twice just so I can keep learning. Miss Stoddard is going to tell my parents that I should be given the opportunity to go to high school in town because I have ¿great potential.¿
I am the third daughter of five girls, and I have never been singled out for anything. Finally, it feels like it¿s my turn. It¿s as though I¿m in the middle of a wonderful contest: the music has stopped, the blindfolded girl has pointed to me, and I¿ve won the cakewalk. I¿ve hardly slept a wink since the letter arrived. I can¿t. My whole world will change if my parents let me go to school. My older sisters, Assunta and Elena, stopped going to school after the seventh grade. Neither wanted to continue and there is so much work on the farm, it wasn¿t even discussed.
I was helping Mama clean the house to prepare for our company, but she made me go outside because I was making her nervous. She¿s nervous? I don¿t know if I will make it until two o¿clock.
As I lean against the trunk of the old elm at the end of our lane and look up, the late-afternoon sunlight comes through the leaves in little bursts like a star shower, so bright
Customer Reviews:
Incredibly Heartwarming.......2007-09-24
This is a wonderfully, breezy, fast read that takes your heart on a warm, soft and poignant journey. As a child I lived near Roseto, PA. This incredibly delightful book took me to a wonderful trip down memory lane, made me smile, cry and laugh right out loud at the accuracy of small town warmth and, conversely small town gossipy pettiness.
If you are looking for a heartwarming book, this is a must read.
The end is tied up a little too quickly and neatly, but this is the only criticism I have.
Betty Smith Meets Laura Ingalls Wilder! BRAVISSIMO!.......2007-08-02
This is the heart-tugging tale of Nella, a young teen of Italian parentage, who aspires to be a teacher but when her father is injured, she must leave school and work at the local clothing factory to help support her family. Not what she would have chosen, but she makes the best of things, a la Francie Nolan. I cheered at her pluck and grit!
Nella falls for Renato, a handsome, poetic, sophisticated young gentleman of twenty one -- seven years her senior. Shades of Laura and Almanzo. But not quite. Where Laura got to marry Almanzo, all our poor heroine Nella gets from her Renato is a letter explaining that he is an adult, and she is practically a little girl, and it's best if she forget him and seek out friends and company in her own age group. I cried at that part and cheered when Nella found love again, of a more accessible sort, with the handsome and polite Francesco Zollerano, and both Nella and the reader come to grips with the fact that Renato was a temporary acquaintance, while Francesco was her Heart's True Hero -- and there's an element of surprise at the pathway Renato chose for his life, which was the main cause of their parting.
This is a story to make you laugh, cry, and cheer, and if I could give it 10 stars, I would. BRAVO! Recommended for all humans, but especially the female ones, from teens to seniors, for like the works of Betty Smith and Laura Wilder, this is a tale that transcends age brackets and age labels and can appeal to any number of people. I repeat, BRAVO!!!!!
Least favorite Adriana Trigiani book.......2007-05-31
I know that I am in the minority, but I thought Queen of the Big Time was Trigiani's weakest book to date (I haven't read the latest Big Stone Gap book). I loved the first three Big Stone Gap books and I also enjoyed Lucia, Lucia, and Rococo. I expected to love this one as well and was instead disappointed. Trigiani tried to cover too many years in too few pages. If you are new to Trigiani's writing, start with Big Stone Gap (in my opinion it is still the very best). Read Queen of the Big Time only if you are desperate for a Trigiani fix and this is the only one you haven't read.
With Only Five Pages Left I Thought I Couldn't Cry Anymore. I Was Wrong........2007-03-01
This is just simply an amazingly wonderful story. Nella, born the middle of five daughters wants very badly, in October of 1924, to be allowed to go on to high school. It's a three mile walk from the simple farm where she has been raised, but she'll do anything and it seems as if her dream comes true. She spends a glorious year learning, then in the summer her father suffers an accident at the quarry where he was working to make extra money. Nella has to quit school and go to work in the local blouse factory to help out. Then her older sister dies in childbirth and Nella knows she's never going to be able to go back to school
To make matters worse, the man she falls in love with -- the man she gives herself to, when in that day and age, especially for Italian American women, was something that was just not done -- leaves town, leaving nothing behind except a note telling Nella to find another, that he was not for her.
How Nella copes with this tragidy will warm your heart. How she deals with heartbreak will lift your spirits. I cried and cried throughout this book, then finally, with only five pages left, I thought the story couldn't get any sadder, that I wouldn't cry anymore over it. I was wrong.
I don't know how I missed this book, why I didn't read it ages ago. I'm going to read it again, starting tonight. Ms. Trigiani is a powerful storyteller. She takes you right in, grabs you by the heart and holds it in a tight fist through all the pages of her tale of love, love lost and love found. If you ever wanted to know what family is all about, you'll find out here, when Nella's niece becomes Queen of the Big Time.
Loved it!.......2006-10-21
I've read the Gap book series. I picked up The Queen of the Big Time after just scanning the backcover. I was not disappointed. This is another very well written story. I felt like I really got to know the characters and did not want the story to end. Great Job Adriana!

The Webb Family.......2004-11-16
This book was written by a lady in her 90's about the Webb family back in the days. The Pee Dee River runs through the southern part of North Carolina and into South Carolina.....it tells of her life and growing up in the old Webb homeplace (which is where my Great Grandfather lived). Anybody looking for anything dealing with the Webbs and the Wilson families and in fact, anyone looking for their southern heritage will be interested in this book!!

Book Description
Jawaharlal Nehru, adulated during his lifetime, has in recent years suffered ill-informed denigration. This book seeks to restore the balance by providing a well-rounded picture of Nehru, the man and statesman, by placing his career within the social milieu and political context of his
times.
Book Description
In this magisterial account, Jean Lacouture portrays the sweep of five hundred years of world history, from the dungeons of the Vatican to the jungles of South America to the royal courts of Europe and Asia. Jesuits: A Multibiography is history with a human face, the fascinating tales of men of the spirit who participated in the actions and passions of the modern world, a "world bursting its seams." "Be all things to all men," said the founder of the Jesuits, Ignatius of Loyola, to his followers. "Go and set the world ablaze!" The often picaresque story takes us to the Paris of Rabelais, where Ignatius, with a handful of his fellow students, formed what would become the Society of Jesus. We follow Francis Xavier to Japan and Matteo Ricci to China. We watch as the Society grows into Christendom's most powerful order, and as the "Black Legend" of a calculating, Machiavellian Jesuitry leads to its abolition in 1773 (it was restored forty years later). We see the great characters of history and culture-Pascal, Voltaire, Frederick the Great, Catherine the Great-play their parts. One of Jean Lacouture's most poignant portraits is of the twentieth century's most famous and beloved Jesuit, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, a scientist-priest whose humanistic conclusions put him at odds with the Church. Lacouture's wide-ranging narrative illuminates Pope John XXIII's reforms and the Jesuit-inspired liberation theology movements in Central and South America. With the papacy of John Paul II, a riveting drama unfolds as the Jesuits are brought under new constraints.
Customer Reviews:
Labor of love...to read.......2006-05-08
All right, I'll be honest: By the time I had read page 6 of this book I stopped dead in my tracts, looked at the cover of the book and to see just who wrote this. Jean Lacounture. A Frenchman. A graciously condescending Voltairian-liberal Frenchman, not only in matters of religion but of/to non-French Voltairian-liberals.
Okay, I thought. Guess I have to make allowances.
So I kept reading.
By page 61 I was THIS close to chucking the whole thing in the waste basket. Its not the subject, but M. Lacouture's style of writing. "Flippant" is perhaps the best word to describe it. "Ramblings" might be another.
Now I'm not saying that this subject should be solumnly handled with kid gloves. But, for pete sakes...
What do I mean? The author muses to himself. He adds numerous little asides and footnotes, some factual and many opinions, complete with a healthy sprinkling of exclaimation points and question marks. He merrily changes names in mid-chapter, even in mid-paragraph, i.e. in his later years in China missionary Jesuit Matteo Ricci became known to the Chinese by the name of Li Mateou. The author merrily referes to the man as either "Ricci" or "Mateou" apparently whenever he feels like it. Thus leaving the reader thinking: "Who was that again?"
Anyway, my advise? "Forget it."
Given this writer's style, this book is a labor of love (of the subject) to read if there ever was one.
(And yes, I did read the whole book. Akin to eating a bowl of cold oatmeal.)
A must reading for all of us who work with Jesuits.......2005-10-04
The book is written in a novel format with each chapter being a true story of Jesuits who represent the times. The author is very objective and while he praises the Jesuits throughout history, he also points out their flaws. The historical accounts and the social context of each puts a real face on the Society of Jesus. The reader comes to identify with and understands better why these men were both loved and feared, how they took courageous stands, yet backed down when they should have stood strong. It is a social history as well as a political history of the Church as well as the Jesuits.
Mr. Big & Big Misunderstandings.......2005-08-22
The review by "Mr. Big," which for some reason appears twice, is so riddled with inaccuracies and errors that it is unworthy of Amazon.com. The references to the Jesuits as "popes" is sickening. The one thing that Jesuits have never been is "popes." Lacouture's book is obviously too big for "Mr. Big."
Fortunately, the other reviews are more reflective of the book and of Jesuit history.
Jesuits: A Multibiography.......2002-06-06
The Jesuits were members of the roman catholic church also known as the society of Jesus. It was found by Saint Iganatious, who was a very well educated pope in 1540 A.D. St. Iganatious had friends who also jooined the Jesuits. One of his friends was Francis Xavier. He was also a very well educated and talented man. He helped St. Iganatious run the group and he was one of the people who were on the hall of fame for the Jesuits. Jesuits are known throughout the world. People in the world join the Jesuits because the group was a very religious order of men and it helped people all over countries. Jesuits were also very famous for their excellence in their missions and the vows which were very reasonable. Jesuits' missions were fantastic because the missioinaries help out people who are in need and they give blessings to the poor and the weak. They try to live their lives just as Jesus did.
The most heretic leader or pope to me was propbably Francis Xavier. I admire his work in the group and in his missions. He was probably the best missionary the Jesuits had. He helped out everyone and was a fine leader. He was admired by his followers, leaders and people who were helped by him. Xavier set a great example to all of the members and people who were younger to him. Xavier was known as the father of the his people. Xavier made up the vows which every Jesuits would take. These vows helped the leaders of the Jesuits make certain that the members would be very faithful to them. The vows were very strict, but it helped the members a lot.
My favorite part in this book was when the book talked about the missions. The missions were one of the best things that the Jesuits did. They traveled on carvans, boats, or on foot. Being a missionary was really tough. The members would have to be trained hard for 10 to 15 years. The members needed great experience to travel out of their homes and spread the words. First, they would have to know the bible and the stories really well. This way the members would be able to answer hard questions which are asked by unbelievers. Next, the missionaries would have to go travel to differnet places for a while because they didn't want people toget home sick. Finally they would have to test the members every thing.
