Book Description
We are still learning about the large-scale structures of the universe. Abrams and Stecker describe what we currently know of the near and far universe, but what sets this book apart from the rest is the illustrations. Stecker has a collection of some of the best and most spectacular astronomical photographs ever taken. The book is mostly illustrated with black and white photographs, but the CD-ROM supplied with the book is a veritable explosion of beautiful colour images, far more than could be squeezed into any normal book. An added benefit of this is that by using an inexpensive inkjet printer, a reader can look at pictures on screen, or print them out in colour with "photo quality".

Jonathan Franzen is smart and brash, the kind of person you want as your social critic but not as a brother-in-law. Many of the 14 essays in How to Be Alone, by the author of the critically acclaimed novel The Corrections, first appeared in The New Yorker, Harper's, and elsewhere. A long, much-discussed rumination on the American novel, (newly) titled "Why Bother?," is included, as well as essays on privacy obsession, the U.S. post office, New York City, big tobacco, and new prisons. At his best, as in "My Father's Brain," a piece on his father's struggle with Alzheimer's, Franzen can make the ordinary world utterly riveting. But at times, it can be difficult to discern where Franzen stands on any particular subject, as he often takes both sides of an argument. Valid attempts to reflect ambiguity s! ometimes lead to obfuscation, especially in his essays on privacy and tobacco, although his belief that small-town America of years gone by offered the individual little privacy certainly rings true. Franzen can write with panache, as in this comment after he watched, without headphones, a TV show during a flight: "(It) became an exposé of the hydraulics of insincere smiles." A few of the shorter pieces appear to be filler. Franzen shines brightest when he gets edgy and a little angry, as in "The Reader in Exile": "Instead of Manassas battlefield, a historical theme park. Instead of organizing narratives, a map of the world as complex as the world itself. Instead of a soul, membership in a crowd. Instead of wisdom, data." --Mark Frutkin, Amazon.ca
Book Description
From the National Book Award-winning author of The Corrections, a collection of essays that reveal him to be one of our sharpest, toughest, and most entertaining social critics
While the essays in this collection range in subject matter from the sex-advice industry to the way a supermax prison works, each one wrestles with the essential themes of Franzen's writing: the erosion of civil life and private dignity; and the hidden persistence of loneliness in postmodern, imperial America. Reprinted here for the first time is Franzen’s controversial l996 investigation of the fate of the American novel in what became known as "the Harper's essay," as well as his award-winning narrative of his father's struggle with Alzheimer's disease, and a rueful account of his brief tenure as an Oprah Winfrey author.

Here, in fourteen essays, are fourteen fresh answers to the question of how to be alone in a noisy and distracting mass culture. These essays show the wry distrust of the claims of technology and psychology, the love-hate relationship with consumerism, and the subversive belief in the tragic shape of the individual life that help make Franzen one of our sharpest, toughest, and most entertaining social critics.

Delving into America's psyche.......2007-08-26
Franzen's collection of essays is about a variety of different topics, but it is ultimately about the isolation and alienation a person can feel in today's modern world.
Each of the essays is well crafted and thoughtful. Topics as divergent as a father's death, fame, and the postal service come up here. But, at the core, Franzen explores how we grow apart as more things are created to bring us together.
The most poignant essay is the one about the deterioration of Franzen's dad. It gives a son's account of what it feels like to slowly lose a parent. The reader can feel the slow dread and sorrow that the failing of a once mighty human being can bring. Another interesting essay concerns Franzen's thoughts about the Oprah controversy.
If you want to know more about the American psyche, read this.
Brilliant but Outdated.......2006-12-30
First off I'll say that I love Franzen's writing style and his dry sense of humor. The problem I had with this book is that because most of the essays were written in the mid to late 90s and all were written before 9/11, much of his observations have been rendered, in my opinion, obsolete. The world became a different place after 9/11 and the start of the war, etc. - and his observations on the zeitgeist, obviously, don't reflect that change.
Superb collection.......2006-03-21
"How To Be Alone" by Jonathan Franzen is the most remarkable collection of essays I've read so far. Perhaps there's a better one, perhaps there are other authors whose mastery of language is sufficient enough to awaken my curiosity about the power of words over feelings. Perhaps, but I'm simply not aware of any other (hint! Help me find them). And in all honesty, I'm not sorry. Because once I've read Franzen, I've discovered the reasons behind my personal amazement of what language is. It is the realization that words carry feelings. Well, not quite. Words possess meaning and their poetic use delivers perception (yes that sounds better). Think about it. 7 million years of humanoid evolution and while the body slowly adapted its physiology to the demands of the environment, our brains played sluggish catch-up. And now, here we are, utilizing a language created only about 100,000 ago with a mind that is still learning how to cope with the billions of thoughts and physiological responses to everything imaginable, and at the same time being bombarded with words, most of which have already lost their sparkle even before the second cup of coffee is finished, and suddenly we discover Franzen's essay - the one beacon in the darkness of the mundane ocean of the familiar, the cliché - and it's shining like a sun, pointing to the only source of emotions and meaning, reminding us of why we think, why we feel, why we live. Like a skillful organ player, Mr. Franzen manipulates the keys and pedals of words to create in me a frame of mind, feelings and dreams. And that's what I call art.
I recommend this book to everyone who has ever wondered what it means to be a skillful writer. Even if you don't agree with what Mr. Franzen stands for, you are obligated (by the power of the written word) to take some time and read one of his essays (my recommendation is the 'Harper' essay. You won't be disappointed).

As a novelist, Franzen is a great essayist.......2005-09-13
A good dream interpreter will offer multiple possibilities from which you might pick. One will make sense to you and surpass "reasonable" or "plausible" to attain "feeling right." In a similar sense, I enjoy Franzen's essays most when they elicit instant affirmation. At those moments, you can nod, say he's hit upon something, notice what nifty way he's found to express what you should have known before. Surprisingly, he seldom achieves that exalted state when he's speaking personally, for himself. He seems more effective when he triangulates his own views with contributions from other smart people. Reading this collection of essays, you occasionally detect the prickliness that makes him--rightly or wrongly--a literary bad boy. His indignation can veer into stridency. However, you also see a sort of warmth that, for me, The Corrections sometimes lacked. As Franzen suggests in his essay "Why Bother?," I read for confirmation that life is complicated. At its best, How to Be Alone does so in a way that suggests not just solidarity with Franzen--and with those he quotes--but with what Franzen observes.
Amazing........2005-09-06
I was looking at the wide range of reviews this book has gotten, and it completely strikes me as appropriate that this books garners the reviews that it does. Consider a quote within the very book:
"The novel is whatever novelists are doing at a given time. If we're not doing the big social novel fifteen years from now, it'll probably mean our sensibilities have changed in ways that make such work less compelling to us - we don't stop because the market dried up. The writer leads, he doesn't follow."
Franzen does not appear to be writing to appeal to everyone - he intends to speak directly on a particular subject that has riled his heart from the beginning, a riling that only a select set of people will embrace. Those that recognize what he speaks of will quickly see the subtext behind all of his writings and see how his selection of essays paints a grand picture of aloneness without seeming to really touch upon the issue directly. Instead, he attacks the idea of it from every angle he knows, as a novelist, from the view of prisons and technology, as one dealing with the past and the present. All is said without saying anything on the topic and it is in this tremendous work that his words carry the careful reader through.
Not all readers will make it to the end. But that is the nature of the book. As many saw only in Catch-22 absurdity and stupidity, I am sure people will regard this book to be likewise. Yet, 'tis not to his audience he writes.

Gilmore and Carlson on Secured Lending.......2004-07-09
Enormous revolutions have occurred in commercial law since the publication of the landmark GILMORE ON SECURITY INTERESTS IN PERSONAL PROPERTY. In this new edition, the author analyzes the law of secured credit under federal bankruptcy law. He presents an exhaustive and authoritative analysis of secured claims in bankruptcy since even secured creditors cannot rely passively on their relatively privileged status but must avoid potential pitfalls to recovery and actively pursue all available assets of the debtor.
Virtually all of the material is new to this revision since secured creditors were largely immune from bankruptcy administration prior to 1978. Secured interests are now enforced in bankruptcy proceedings far more than anywhere else. Moreover, bankruptcy law does not adhere to a distinction between real and personal property.
In Part I the authors cover the avoidance powers of a bankruptcy trustee against security interests otherwise good under state law. Among the topics covered are voidable preferences, commingled bank accounts, lapsed perfection, and exempt property. Part II begins the discussion of the administrative treatment of a secured claim once it is established as valid in bankruptcy. Topics included are liquidation and reorganization, reinstatement and cure, special status of airplanes, redemption and affirmation, automatic stay, proofs of claim, adequate protection and cash collateral. Part III concludes with analysis of after-acquired property and proceeds, proceeds and voidable preferences, power of sale, surcharge, post petition secured credit, "double elevens," classification veto, equity cushions, post petition interest rates, and fees, costs, and charges.
Gilmore and Carlson on Secured Lending: Claims in Bankruptcy will enable practitioners to serve the interests of their creditor clients more effectively by recovering the maximum amount possible from any bankruptcy proceeding.
Book Description
A captivating look at one of America's most prominent and fascinating public figures
Bestselling author, war hero, presidential candidate, champion of the most politically sticky issue to rock Washington since Watergate-campaign finance reform- there may be no better known senator than John McCain. From Democrats to Republicans, many Americans relate to John McCain's straight-talking form of politics.
In Man of the People: The Life of John McCain, political journalist Paul Alexander offers the only objective, in-depth account of this remarkable politician's journey-from Naval Academy student to Presidential hopeful. Readers will follow McCain from his rich Navy roots through his twenty-one year tour in the Navy, and then behold as he evolves into one of our country's most distinguished yet controversial political leaders. With insider access, Alexander flushes out the personal history to present a candid portrait of the political evolution of McCain. From the WWII hero grandfather who aggressively helped destroy the Japanese military machine to McCain's growth from Navy plebe to Reagan foot soldier, Alexander uncovers what makes McCain tick, how he evolved into a politician with a cause that has endeared him to Democrats and antagonized the Republican party leadership.
Political insider, radio talk show host, and well-known journalist Paul Alexander followed McCain from the Presidential campaign trail to stumping for campaign finance reform. McCain's life is not only the story of the most compelling politician since Ronald Reagan but also the history of the transformation of American politics over the last thirty years. Through McCain's personal history-from Vietnam veteran to Reagan go-to guy to a key figure in the Keating S&L crisis to military campaign critic, Alexander pulls back the public curtain to reveal the private man. In doing so, he exposes military machinations, Vietnam controversy, POW torture, mental depression, and political intrigue. John McCain continues to push the political system, thus capturing the attention of the American public. The straightforward, no-nonsense style that has become his hallmark shines through every page of this telling biography.
Customer Reviews:
Not quite a hit.......2003-01-08
Fans of John McCain who want to know about the senator's life history will not be too disappointed. It's all there, from his childhood through his military service through his ascendancy to the national spotlight.
Unfortunately, the book is sloppily written and edited. Alexander repeats himself quite often, and he relies too much on long-winded quotes from other sources. Further, the editing leaves a lot to be desired. Phrases like "centered around," as opposed to the correct "centered on" are commonplace and distracting. Alexander's magazine pieces are much better, which leads me to believe this work suffers from poor editing more than the pedestrian prose.

Useful, fact-packed, very readable introduction.......2002-08-11
This mini-biograpy gives a clear, detailed but lively survey of Hitler's rise and fall, showing how a man in many ways remarkable only for his mediocrity managed to exploit the fears and weaknesses of others to create perhaps the most evil regime that has ever existed.
Plenty of quotations from contemporaries, including Hitler, his generals, his followers and his opponents, with chapters on life under Hitler and even Hitler the man, make this a useful introduction for the student or general reader.
Customer Reviews:
A vivid but disturbing narrative.......2006-05-09
I read this book when I was first coming out. While I don't recommend "Tom Smith" as any sort of a role model, the book helped me by ripping off the cover of what had been, from my perspective, an entirely concealed world of exceptionally common and abundant guy-on-guy sex. No one likes to discuss how much sex is actually going on and I think a frank admission of the fact that people like sex and indulge in it vigorously is healthy for our society. Seeing how common guy-on-guy sex is even for men who otherwise seemed quite ordinary or "normal" helped me to come to terms with my own homosexuality. I began to view homosexual sex as a normal, commonplace event, as opposed to a strange, removed, "othered" experience. Tom lived a very active, multi-partner sex life which he effectively concealed over decades from his family and open society. He seems fairly honest in recounting his story and he grows somewhat as a result of telling it. I don't really think that he confronts that split in his personality effectively, however. At the end, he remains closeted, pretending to be faithful to his wife while engaging in regular sex with multiple partners. His journey is interesting and lively. It is also entirely sexual. Tom's capacity for love seems about as stunted as his libido is indulged. In the end, his story was an example of the sort of dishonest life I didn't want to live.
Enough of theories: with this one you get reality!.......2001-02-17
This is the only book I've read (and I've read at least a dozen of them not only in English) in the subject which really puts you in the life of a married bisexual man, as hundreds of thousands in America today. Here you get the real deal! A must have book.
A PART OF EVERY ONE' S LIFE, AT LEAST FOR A SERIOUS ONE.......2001-01-03
THIS IS A BOOK THAT INTRODUCES ONESELF IN THE REALLITY OF DUAL FEELINGS,OF LOVING ONE AND THE OTHER, OF THE DUALITY THAT LIFE BEMCOMES FOR A PASSIONATE PERSON, AS WE HAVE EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, SO ONE MAY UNDERSTAND BETTER WHAT LIFE IS FOR ME AND OTHERS, ON DESPITE OF THE GENDER...A MUST READ FOR MUST PEOPLE.
