This book is little known and with good reason. Frankly, there is nothing here about leadership of any value. To add insult to injury, Judge's communication style is downright irritating. Should you wish to know about leadership, I recommend books by Goleman, Kotter or Collins. I was forced to read Judge as I am an Executive MBA student at the University of Tennessee, where Judge teaches. However, it's unlikely that you will encounter this book anywhere else.

Besides the hackneyed MBTI theory and the smarmy interpretation, I can't believe Judge found no women leaders to interview!

And those who can't teach. Judge's book on leadership
appears to classify him in the latter category. I disagree
with the suspiciously glowing review of this nondescript
book. There is nothing risky in this book -- after all,
what is risky about the MBTI; or concluding that leaders
have to want to change in order to do so. There is a
lot here that is hackenyed, old hat and nothing special.

An experiential approach to behavioral change for leaders.......2002-02-11

Judge's book represents a risk on the part of the author. Namely, stating the conclusion that changes in a leader's behavior and style can only be accomplished by the individual's own reflective self-examination and desire to change. Admittedly the supporting data are limited - caveats clearly stated at the outset. These include limited geographic and gender CEO representation in the survey upon which the book is based. But the conclusions are clearly limited to those supported by the research. In addition, this book does not offer the simplistic and ineffective "checklist" approach to effective leadership. It recognizes that meaningful and lasting effectiveness for leaders is based on recognition of their weakenesses, and use of the personality attributes not naturally a part of what they perceive as their strengths ("shadow work"). Finally, the message in this book is not heard by all, only those sufficiently intuitive to understand the natural internal conflict that results in extraordinary leadership. An excellent book from a thoughtful author.

Neither a book on ethics nor leadership -- nothing worth remembering or savoring. You can safely skip this one as many others have.

Although older people make considerable use of health and welfare services, researchers, practitioners and policy makers often forget that the majority of them live active and healthy lifestyles, taking care of themselves with a minimum of formal support. Self care is therefore crucial to the maintenance of well-being yet it has often been neglected when considering later life.

This book explores the theory, extent and practice of self health care in later life. It brings together literature from the areas of health education and promotion, self help and self care, and gerontology, in order to provide an overview of the main research approaches and developments in this field. Neither an introduction nor a recipe book for level sets. Contains dense information and requires supplemental material.

Not a self contained book!.......2003-10-12

I bought this book with the intent of understanding the level set method AND be able to implement it in code. The book fails on the later. He gives you some basic formulas/algorithms to start with, but they are not good enough for most problems. You need to get the references (and the references of those references) to obtain the actual algorithms people use to implement the level set method.

The first six chapters are good for giving you a nice qualitative understanding of the method and the issues of implementing the method. And the rest of the book claims to show you the more advanced techniques, but whenever the nitty gritty details are needed, he refers you to the references.

My advice: just get his references. If you are at a university, then you probably have free access to the online journals that contain his (and others) research articles. In fact, this book is basically a copy-paste of those articles! Literally!

Not for beginners.......2003-04-23

I am afraid that this book is not for beginners who want to have a clear mind of the level set method. You will have to go to the library quite often to dig out all the references the author mentioned. I would say this book is for experienced researchers only.

Good introduction to level set methods.......2001-06-07

I use these methods in the context of image analysis, for image segmentation essentially. The book is an inescapable introduction by one of the main inventors of these methods. It is easy to read and relatively complete. Be sure to get the second edition. The only slight problems are the remaining typos. There are quite a few, for a second edition, and they might throw off a beginner. You will need to read some introduction text on finite differences methods at least. The chapter in Numerical Recipes is enough.

This is The Introduction to Level-Set Method.......2000-04-27

This is a very good introduction to the very exciting technique, level-set method. The method is basically for front-tracking or interface motion. But its application turned out to be so wide that it is now applied to problems which does not seem relevant to front-tracking, such as computaional grid generation. This book explaines the basics of this powerful tool very clearly, and it is in fact easy to read. Although it was written by a mathematician, it is not very mathematical like some texts on finite-element method written by mathematicians (which are often formidable to engineers). I recommend this book to anyone in engineering. You might find a new application of this technique.

A major writer of the 20th Century.......2006-04-13

Few writers have created such a unique voice that embeds within a reader the world of the writer's character(s) and their life/lives. The Walserian World as some have quiped, where the reader comes away from the work with a different world-view, as though the reader is looking at the world with Walserian eyes. Robert Walser is such an amazing, unique writer; whose writing exists at so many different levels with it's simpleton-clever-profundity. And Christopher Middleton translations of Walser's work is "A Species of Mime." Unfortunately, this book has been in print for over 6 months and I didn't even know about it. I just picked it up yesterday and read most of it last night. Makes the "flash poems" of today read like pathetic missives to an unknown reader.

More Walser in English is ALWAYS a good thing - few pleasures can surpass going to the bookstore & discovering that a new volume is out, though it makes me unhappy that I heard nothing about this being published. Walser is somebody who matters. This is a collection of small pieces, some purely fictional, some not quite so fictional; some were published while he was alive & some are from his manuscripts. They're all over the place, but there are heartstopping moments of beauty scattered through him all - his short version of "The Robber" makes me deeply, deeply happy. Also includes a current (2005) bibliography of translations of Walser as well as some critical work on him. Thank you UNebraska Press for publishing this book.

Professor Lee Annis really knows his stuff. His accounts in this book come from a close relationship with the Tennessee Senators. His first hand accounts make this book a must read for anyone who wants to know anymore regarding the American democratic process as well as the people who help make the USA what it is today. I am very proud to have participated in the authors lectures, truly an inspiration. Dr. Lee Annis really knows his stuff.

The Well-Told Story of an American Political Hero.......2000-08-16

The state of Tennessee has had a proud political heritage from the days of the Declaration of Independence to the election of 2000. One of Tennessee's most recent shining lights was Senator Howard H. Baker, Jr. Baker's story is one of true grin-and-bear-it grit. A political fighter, Baker learned the art of compromise in dealing with the heavily Democratic senates of the 1960s and early 1970s. He was a powerful senator during the Nixon years, vice chairing Senator Ervin's Select Senate Committee on Watergate, earning him the respect and admiration of a grateful nation. Baker's candor and likeability allowed him to become the Minority Leader for the Republicans and sent him stumping all over the nation in the eventual hopes of having a Republican Senate. Baker fought his aspirations of the presidency through Watergate, the Energy Crisis, the Panama Canal Treaties, and the START II negotiations because he believed that a strong nation stemmed from a working relationship between parties rather than gridlock. He fought hard for partnership rather than partisanship, but his good deeds and responsibility to his leadership duties cost him in his 1980 campaign to be his party's presidential nominee. The book is a great read for all those interested in political history or for those just itching to hear the tale of a politician who actually helped build America up rather than tear her down. Very similar to Lee Annis' co-authored book Tennessee Senators 1911-2000 (authored by Sen. Bill Frist).

With a singular voice to watch, Amy Jo Wood explores her own journey of grief in this deceptive collection of short stories/character sketches/memoirs. Truth literally exudes from each word, and you are transported to a different place and time. The characters explored become real to you, most particularly the author's own voice, which is alternately joyful, passionate, sad, but always insightful and charming. You feel the need to walk these paths yourself to wash in the transcendental footsteps Ms. Wood has luckily left behind.

Having lived in Wilmington,NC, I recognized all the wacky folks the author talked about. There is something magical about that town and Ms. Wood has captured the mystical flavor. Visit the port town and see for yourself. If you can't do that - read her book."Life Between Azalea Festivals" sort of does for Wilmington what "Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil" did for Savannah.

This book provides only a superficial biography of G. M. Syed, a fountain head of Sindhi Nationalism. Couple of chapters on the grievances of Sindh are valuable. Syed's politics lasted more than seven decades and it went through being a strong advocate for the creation of Pakistan to a champion of United India with autonomous states and finally to being a pioneer of Jeay Sindh Movement--movement demanding the seperation Sindh from Pakistan. This complicated journey certainly needs more analysis than this book presents.

Not much is mentioned about his scholarly work on Sindh's history, religion, poetry and social studies.

This book may serve as an introduction for Sindhi Nationalism.

Very good, if you can find a copy.......2005-01-26

I found this book at the local library and picked it up on a whim. It's very good, and I highly recommend it if you can find a copy. Like another reviewers said, it doesn't include details about how air traffic control is done, but instead paints a picture about what it's like to BE a controller, particularly in the 80s before and after PATCO's strike. There are some great near-miss stories and tales about eccentric controllers that are some of my favorite parts of the book.

Personal account of life in the ATC world..........2001-05-16

Actually 3 1/2 stars...I was a little disappointed in this because I was expecting more technical explanation of ATC practices versus a kind of memoir on Brenlove's life in ATC. There were some definite interesting parts and this book isn't bad at all, just know what you'll be reading when you get it. That being said, I'd probably still buy this book because, as I mentioned before, there is some value here and makes for entertaining reading, just don't expect to gain any real insight into ATC processes.

Great "All Around" View of Air Traffic Controllers.......2000-07-02

This book is very insightful in the fact that it gives the reader a good idea of the types of people air traffic controllers are. Furthermore, it has real life examples of airplane "conflicts" and definately shows why this job has been rated as the most stressful in the world.

Good view of the life of an air traffic controller.......1999-09-12

It's like sitting around in his living room, as he recounts story after story about personalities and the ups and downs of being an air traffic controller. While giving some very interesting information about how air traffic is controlled, the book is more about people; the people that succeed and fail as air traffic controllers. Of particular interest are the sections devoted to the 1981 PATCO strike, and the acrimony leading up to it. Of less interest appeared to be the stories about what a great guy X was, or what a jerk Y was, but in retrospect, these stories serve as useful pieces in the overall picture of what it is like to work as a controller.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in gaining an understanding of a very special job and the people that do it. If you are interested in learning the nitty gritty of how controllers do their work, or in riveting prose, then you had best look elsewhere.
