    Book Description

Corporate MVPs create extraordinary value for the organization by consistently exceeding expectations. MVPs produce tangible and dramatic business results; they improve the people they work with and the organization in which they work. In fact, the future of your business depends on this 5 to 10 percent of its very best people. But far too often, MVPs are lost because of management missteps, or even by no management at all.

Based on in-depth interviews with senior executives and business owners, HR professionals and executive recruitment firms, and with MVPs themselves, Corporate MVPs explores what makes these talented individuals tick, how to develop and cultivate them, what it takes for someone to become an MVP, and the important role of HR in managing this key talent.

    5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2004-09-06

This book offers great insight into these valuable assets--- our MVPs. The practical advise on how to manage MVPs is a extremely important for the HR community in supporting the organizations they work with. The authors research an area of leadership that is critical in these challenging times.

5 out of 5 stars This research really hits home!.......2004-08-26

There are just so many business books, and most of them are one-dimensional--taking a single theory and stretching it into a cure-all. Butterris and Roiter offer something different and refreshing here...a framework for how to think about the people around you, and how to build strong individuals and teams. The specific stories are great... I highly recommend this for one's senior staff.

5 out of 5 stars Good to Great ... Only Better.......2004-08-25

The authors tell a tale of business success that has been recently repopularized by Jim Collins in his book, Good to Great: hire good people and nurture them to success. In corporate MVPs, the entire thesis is to find and support your biggest assets. I found the authors' perspective refreshing and bold. I thought their tips on how to ID and exalt your corp MVPs to be common sensical, yet not obvious. This is a very good how to book for managers who have accepted the fact that recruiting talent is a wise career move. This is not to be confused with the presidential situation where the DUMB are hiring loyal DUMBERs, so as not to be threatened.

5 out of 5 stars A very important way to think about my best people.......2004-08-25

A business friend told me of this book and suggested it to me when one of my most important employees was thinking of leaving.

I run a decent sized company (1200 people) and I know that a precious few employees make up the heart of my business. If these 3 or 4 people left I would be up the creek. We have a good program to manage our talented people but have not felt that we really had a handle on how to manage these "MVP"s. Corporate MVPs really helped me to think about these people and what makes them tick. I now appreciate them more than ever, and now I am pretty comfortable that I know how to manage them. I am less on edge about my MVPs leaving.

Corporate MVPs is a good companion to one of my favorite business books "Good to Great". Good to Great looks at how organizations can move from good to great. Corporate MVPs looks at how individuals can move from good to MVP status.

I found the Chapter on "Managing the MVP" to be especially helpful. I have followed its advice and I have seen great results with my 5 MVPs. I also really liked the anecdotes and ideas from many successful business people that are scattered throughout the book. It adds a real life business feel to the research.

I have given the book to a number of my promising people so they could read "How to Become an MVP". It has created some very interesting discussions in my staff meetings on how we can all find ways to improve.

I have also found the chapters on recruiting MVPs and on managing difficult MVPs to be timely and extremely useful.

I have bought copies for my HR Director and for all my direct reports. Once read it becomes a good reference book as the needs arise.

    5 out of 5 stars New research.......2004-06-22

This book provides new research into the whole concept of the few people that create the most value for an organization.

The concepts are clear and practical and are enhanced by the stories from the people interviewed

            Book Description

This second edition attests to the impact of the subject matter in a variety of scientific and engineering disciplines. There has been tremendous growth in areas such as transport phenomena/materials science and processing. This book builds on and updates the editor's earlier work. It highlights recent advances in the motion of particles, drops and bubbles in complex fluids and represents a timely and needed addition to the literature on real (non-linear) materials. In particluar, it contains state-of-the-art contributions from leading experts in areas such as particle deposition in membranes, flow of granular mixtures, food suspensions, foams, electrokinetic and thermocapillary driven flows, and two-phase flows.

              Book Description

This book contains the routines and demonstration programs from the first edition of the highly acclaimed reference book, Numerical Recipes: The Art of Scientific Computing. It includes computer code and code captions from the book and example book and the commentary from the example book. The author employs a contemporary version of BASIC, Microsoft QuickBasic 4.5, which roughly follows the structure of FORTRAN; in fact, the recipes found in this book are easily adapted for other modern forms of BASIC. This book is recommended for use with one of the main Numerical Recipes books, such as Numerical Recipes in Fortran 77 [link to 43064X]. The programs contained in this book are also available as machine-readable code on the Numerical Recipes Code CD-ROM with Windows/Macintosh Single Screen License [link to 576083].

3 out of 5 stars Useful routines for computation.......2006-02-24

Good book: a collection of useful routines. somehow lacking when referring to formulas in the text (formulas can be found in the Fortran77 edition available eventually on-line).
Maybe some more details could be added when explaining routines critical steps and/or alternative usage of main routines (i.e.: ordering routines for percentile calculations).

5 out of 5 stars Routines and more routines.......2001-07-05

If you ever had to program a complicated numerical algorithm, such as SVD decomposition, Bessel functions, eigensystems or Fourier transform, you will know how useful this book is. All those problems, and many others, are presented and the full BASIC code of a routine, which solves it, is given. This book is an issue for "Numerical recipes in FORTRAN", that brings the codes in FORTRAN 77 and also the mathematical theory behind the routines. There are versions of this issue also for Pascal and C++. If you need any routine, you just have to "cut and paste" it from the book into your program. Don't left to look "Numerical Recipes in FORTRAN", which is the mother of the whole collection.

2 out of 5 stars Another Disconnected Anecdote .......2007-06-22

Another Day in Paradise had the potential to be an incredible book. It covers a fascinating topic involving danger, selflessness, and distant lands. Unfortunately the "author" (compiler and editor) of this book chose to take 15 disconnected accounts from humanitarian workers and randomly inserted them into this collection. Some of the contributors are quite captivating with their description while others are less than exciting. The result is a disjointed book that reads like 15 successive magazine articles written for 15 different publications.

It's hard not to feel that the editor of this book contributed nothing to this project short of attempting to profit at other people's humanitarian efforts and writing. Worse still, in the Afterword goes on to describe what a living hell her life has been as a result of this book:

"Friends and family were concerned that I was so immersed in the hardships of wars and disasters that I could no longer enjoy life. And, in some sense, this was true;"

Wow, what a martyr! Having other people risk their lives as humanitarians and write about it for your book sure is tough work.

Of the 7 books I recently bought, this was the first one I picked up to read because it seemed like it would have the most potential. Unfortunately it was quite a disappointment.

              5 out of 5 stars reality.......2007-02-17

Sometimes reality 'sucks' but it is always 'real' and one can always learn from it....read this.

              5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read!.......2004-07-16

I've read this book countless times now. It gives such a wonderful insight into the real lives of these workers who are on the frontlines day in and day out. The stories are very well written and truly paint a picture of the events taking place around these workers.
If you've ever thought (or dreamed!) of doing humanitarian work, especially overseas, this book is a must-read. It will open your eyes to the real world not the media's glossed over view of it.
              Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Paradise, like Hell!.......2003-12-05

The personal essays of aid workers compiled by Bergman are profiles of ordinary people doing the extraordinary. Each essay reveals a unique writing style and personality. The one common thread that they share is a strong willingness to serve humanity; hence, they're humanitarians.

The compilation consists of 15 essays. None of the locations would be paradise because the hell-holes span the globe to wherever there are wars, the aftermath of wars, conflicts, and natural disasters. Personally, I'm pleased to read about some of those aid organizations that I support.

Here are a few of the more memorable pieces:

Camp-bo-dia by Dr. Panayotis Ellinas, a doctor serving the many needs of Cambodians in a Thai refugee camp. Dr. Ellinas grew up on Cyprus where he witnessed "napalm bombs, death, destruction, and occupation. A scene with pained faces comes back to me often...This is what led me to my vocation." More than empathy, more than compassion; the doctor has great respect for his patients and colleagues.

The House of Prayer and Peace written by Sister Theresa Baldini underscores a strong commitment of caring. Sister Theresa, who in 2002 was 63 years old, and Sister Madeline, age 79, have served in Sudan since 1986. The two Maryknoll nuns have endured not only continuous aerial bombings, several bouts of malaria, and countless rats; but also an austere diet of lentils, peanut butter and crackers, and cabbage. And there's no mention of burn-out!

My Bodyguard is a poignant account by Patrick Dillon of his 10 year old Somalian bodyguard, Muhammad Ali. I'll connect with young Ali whenever I use my Swiss Army Knife. (You'll need to read this essay to know why.)

Paul Heslop's Letters Home is full of grit and humour as he describes his daily routine of defusing mines in Angola.

Overall, each story provides great insight, something more than what could be read in official agency newsletters.

                Book Description

A former Reagan White House Counsel presents a comprehensive picture of Ronald Reagan, focusing on how his distinctive leadership style was the source of both his setbacks and his success.

An icon of the twentieth century, Ronald Reagan has earned a place among the most popular and successful U.S. presidents. In this compelling firsthand account of Reagan's presidency, Peter J. Wallison, former White House Counsel to President Reagan, argues that Reagan took office with a fully developed public philosophy and strategy for governing that was unique among modern presidents. "I am not a great man," Reagan once said, "just committed to great ideas."

Wallison shows how Reagan's unyielding attachment to certain key ideas--communicated through his speeches--created a cohesive administration and revived the spirit of the nation. In Ronald Reagan, Wallison describes what it was like to be on Reagan's White House staff and how Reagan's attachment to principle produced both the best and worst days of his presidency. Updated with a new epilogue.

This book is based on Peter Wallison's year in the White House when he served as a legal counsel.

This book shares some of Ronald Reagan's wit, humor, and humility.

Mr.Wallison offers an assessment of the media coverage regarding the Reagan administration. The media had a tendency to over-cover the sensational while ignoring subjects of substance, like policy(foreign or domestic). They trolled for scandals.

This book shows what management style was used by the President.
It also debuncts the myth that President Reagan was not intelligent.

Another interesting topic in this book is the behind the scenes view of situations in the cabinet. Leaks to the media and how rampant they were from the White House and especially the Hill.

There was a comparison of the Chiefs of Staff. Mr. Wallison wrote mostly about Donald Regan because he worked with him.

The chapters dedicated to the Iran-Contra scandal were very good! I came away with a better understanding of exactly what happened and who was involved.

This is the first book that I have read about President Reagan. I recommend it as a balanced book from an author who worked in the White House. I wish that he had been there longer!

5 out of 5 stars A true American Conservative Leader.......2003-12-24

I love this book as it contains what it means to be a true conservative and not a false one. As the great Conservative economist F.A. Hayek once stated "    . . . the whole conception of social or distributive justice is empty and meaningless; and there will therefore never exist agreement on what is just in this sense... I am certain, however, that nothing has done so much to destroy the juridical safeguards of individual freedom as the striving after this mirage of social justice."
That is in a Capitalistic Socieity there will be more losers than winners and that is just the way it is. If you can not make ends meet it is not "societys fault" but your own. Don't expect your mommy "the state" to make it right!
From here the author goes own to explain how all the scandals of the Reagan presidentcy where not the leaders fault but those of his underlings for they were to blaime not him. The buck stops there my friend!

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read.......2003-03-08

This is an excellent "insider" perspective on Reagan's management style and the Iran-Contra scandal. Wallison debunks thoroughly the prevailing view of the liberal media that Reagan was intellectually limited, disengaged and manipulated by his advisors. Reagan's remarkable accomplishments are attributed to the clarity of and his unfailing focus on a few "big ideas" (e.g. a smaller and less intrusive government, freer trade, a strong defense, faith in the traditional American values of individualism and sense of personal responsibility) and his ability to inspire those within the administration to actively pursue his policy objectives. As legal counsel to the President, Wallison was the White House staffer most involved with Iran-Contra. He persuasively argues that the scandal was basically a foreign policy blunder made worse by a renegade NSC staff (particularly Oliver North) and a press corps more interested in scandal mongering than issues.

                          Book Description

Imagined Ancestries of Vietnamese Communisim illuminates the real and imagined lives of Ton Duc Thang (1888-1980), a celebrated revolutionary activist and Vietnamese communist icon, but it is much more than a conventional biography. This multifaceted study constitutes the first detailed re-evaluation of the official history of the Vietnamese Communist Part and is a critical analysis of the inner workings of Vietnamese historiography never before undertaken in its scope.

In prominence and public visibility second only to Ho Chi Minh, whom he succeeded in the presidency, Ton Duc Thang in fact lacked any real power. Author Christoph Giebel reconciles this seeming contradiction by showing that it was only Ton Duc Thang who could personify for the Party crucial legitimizing "ancestries": those that linked Vietnamese communism with the Russian October Revolution, highlighted proletarian internationalism among its ranks, and rooted the Party in Viet Nam's south. The study traces the decades-long, complex processes in which famous heroic episodes in Ton Duc Thang's life were manipulated or simply fabricated and—depending on prevailing historical and political necessities—utilized as propaganda by the Communist Party. Over time, narrative control over these tales switched hands, however, and since the late 1950s the stories came to be used in factional disputes by competing ideological and regional interests within the revolutionary camp.

Based on innovative archival research in Viet Nam and France and on analyses of biographical writings, propaganda, and museum representations, the study challenges core assumptions about the history of the Vietnamese Communist Part and sheds light on divisions within the revolutionary movement along regional, class, and ideological lines. Giebel uses the fictions and contested facts of Ton's life to demonstrate that history-writing and the constructions of memories and identities are always political acts.

BODY HATE: A GAY MAN'S STRUGGLE WITH MS is a rarity: an inside look at a gay man's experience with the disease. Though other books details the effects and pain of learning about this incurable and debilitating disease, this work will always have the special ground-breaking position of being "First." No other work delineates the world of a young gay musician who suffers torments he never anticipated and could not prepare to feel. This is the story of Bill Cate who was a punk rocker from Boston, on the verge of hitting the Big Time, when he was felled by the mysterious and ever-lurking disease which strikes with devastating effects. It also tells the story of Bill's gay lifestyle: a world of dance, music, and nightlife in Boston's clubs, which comes to an abrupt end with the onset of the disease.

The work is specially printed in bold and double-spaced to make it more easily readable to those who suffer from Multiple Sclerosis, and the often experienced optic neuritis.

As an EM patient, you feel like under his skin all the time - ever since trying not to worry his family, or watching his friendship links fade as the disease takes its place, or being blessed with self knowledge because of it all.
All written without a blink of self-pity or sorrow, as he could get to learn "listening to his body", Cate give us a great example of how to deal with EM.

I never thought I would find a book that showed every step of a gay man's struggle with MS. Yet, here it is. This book is so conversational and easy to read that I almost felt like the writer was sitting next to me in a chair, telling me his story. And as a gay man, I found so many parallels to what I have experienced. I had such a hard time finding gay and lesbian support groups in the MS world. Now this book is a godsend to all gays with MS. Here you see how a young man dealt with his fight against MS. From the first symptoms to discovery to acceptance, this book is like reading a journal. I identified with the writer so often as he tried to find himself after being diagnosed. What a great chronicle, this is must reading for every person with MS, but especially for gay men like myself.
