Customer Reviews:
Great Overall review book.......2004-08-21
This is a great book for overall review. I'd recommend buying it at the start of 1st year or the very latest the start of second year and use it as a review tool for exams. Make notes in the margins on things you think are important and aren't included. By making notes in the margins it will become the only book you'll need to study from because if you know everything in this book you are guarenteed to pass the boards.
If you like system-based approach, Step-Up is a great supplement, but it's micro section is poor

Key source for step 1.......2004-01-30
Definitely the key source for step 1 preparation but as the authors say: it should not be the only source of preparation.
Molecular biology and genetics should have a separate section in the review section as they are heavily tested in the actual exam. Otherwise very good and concise presentation of high yield facts. Do not forget to practice questions which are most similar to the real thing in NMS or on Kaplan website.
Careful with rating of book recommendation.
Better to make up your own mind.
Good luck.

This is so funny I bought a copy of the FA book 2003 and looking at it and comparing it to the 2002 version I saw that almost all of the mistakes where being corrected and stuff like that...
I had the 2002 version, which was fraught with little mistakes here and there...
Yeah like I said there were many mistakes on the 2002 version; in the different subject areas.
At least the ones that I had come across while attempting to read it really made me mad...
Now the question is:
How come a book like FA for the usmle step1 book had
Some serious mistakes Like that?
I mean being so popular and all...
What a shame...
It had mistakes in Path; biochemistry and so forth and so on...
Thanks God that the 2003 edition came out; the book
has so many corrections made; you know thinking back now in those days, those mistakes really drove me really mad...
it drove me crazy some times thinking that they were meant to be at one time or another to be thought of as true....
It was driving me paranoid...lol
Oh my, all of those little mistakes, fraught with mistakes...?
Thx for your time in reading this article.
Hope that it made you less skeptical in buying future editions of the first aid book for the usmle step1.

Great book.......2003-07-16
I found this book highly useful for the usmle step 1. It summarized the topics in a reader friendly format. It helped me to study for the test without carrying so many textbooks around with me. I also recommend the following which is sold on amazon:
Spinal Anatomy Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
ISBN: 0971999600
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers ISBN: 0971999635
The last 2 study guides showed me the kind of topics that were asked on portions of the USLME step 1. You can't go wrong with these 3 books.
A must, along with BRS Pathology and QBank.......2003-06-08
I wouldn't recommend reading this book 6 times cover to cover as the guy below me did, but it's definitely a must for Step I. Good images, great high yield info, wonderful index, great buzz-word association section, and helpful reviews of other medical texts at the end. You're making a big mistake if you don't pick this one up... if you have the time (and the lack of social life) to read this book cover to cover 6 times, more power to you... if you get through it once, more power to you. A must!

Book Description
Genetic studies aimed at understanding the origin of species are dominating major scientific journals. In the past decade, genetic tools that were previously available only in model systems have become accessible to investigators working on nearly all species. Concurrent with these technical advances has been an increase in understanding of both the importance of considering the ecological context of speciation and testing hypotheses about causes for species formation. Many recent studies suggest a prominent role of sexual selection in species formation. These advances have produced a need for a synthesis of what we now understand about speciation, and perhaps more importantly, where we should go from here. In this volume, several leading investigators and rising stars have contributed reviews and/or novel primary research findings aimed at understanding the ultimate mystery on which Darwin named his most famous and influential book.
Fundamental to the origin of species is the evolution of mate choice systems. This collection of papers discusses burgeoning genetic, evolutionary, and ecological approaches to understanding the origins of mating discrimination and causes of premating reproductive isolation both within and between species. The individual contributions span a wide spectrum of disciplines, taxa, and ideas (some controversial). This synthesis brings together several of the most recent ideas with supporting empirical data.
This book will be of particular interest to both undergraduate and postgraduate researchers and students and researchers in the field of evolutionary biology, genetics and animal behaviour.

Book Description
The book presents an overview on important aspects of ion irradiation of surfaces, emphasizing low impact energies. Specifically, ion penetration and implantation into solids, defect creation and amorphization of semiconductors, sputtering of elemental and multicomponent targets, and ionization processes of emitted species are discussed. It provides a synoptic view of these phenomena which are strongly interrelated by the same basic processes, but are often described separately and in diverging terminology. The book tries to bridge this gap, summarizing results from experiments, computer simulations and theoretical approaches.
Book Description
More than half a century after Einstein first described the energetic unity of the world in his famous equation, E=mc2, we are finally beginning to understand the spiritual and mystical implications of his discovery. Sanctuary: The Path to Consciousness is about the miraculous possibilities that emerge when we see the universe as a matrix of frozen light, the spiritual manifestation of our intuitive consciousnesses.
In this remarkable novel, you will find a new energetic model of the body, the spirit, and the nature of the physical world. It points the way to unlimited possibilities of absolute, eternal transformation, and you will find out that it is readily available now!
After reading this book, you too can take advantage of the techniques of energetic Quantum-Consciousness Evaluation, and be able to identify and remove subtle-energy imbalances to attain and integrate physical, emotional, and spiritual harmony!

Can we trust AIM?.......2006-12-02
Over the last 5 years or so, I have learned a great deal about "vibrational therapies" and have applied some of it directly to my patient base. I know they can work and I realize why they must be supressed and ridiculed by "the powers that be". This is why I bought this book and read it in a single sitting. Although written as a fictional story, the technology "Max" uses exists and can get fantastic results, but what bothered me is the lack of recognition from the authors that "Max" did not invent anything new. At best, he might have simplified the techniques through better computer technology. Passing him off as some sort of brilliant, innovative health guru serves economic interests more so than the truth here. I know exactly what system "Max" uses in the first half of the book for diagnosis and treatment, and the general term used for distance healing via a "witness" (which he does in the latter half of the book) is called Radionics and was "discovered" and used with great success on people, animals, and plants/crops back in the 1930s and probably even earlier. But, of course, none of this is mentioned or acknowledged in the book.
What "Max" does is quite real and this is the ultimate value of the book if it can open people's minds up and turn them on to "vibrational therapies". However, paying AIM a bunch of money and sending in a photo and hoping that someone does something of value to it in California is questionable. And the fact that it is endorsed by the Hollywood turds makes it even less viable in my opinion. My advice would be to research the technology in the book and ultimately buy your own machine (total cost is about $24,000 USD which would include the top-rated type of machine, the flight to Europe to get it, and about 7-9 days worth of hands-on training while there). Become the mysterious "Max" of your neighborhood!!
Happy vibrations.
POWERFUL - I LOVED IT!!!!!!.......2006-11-16
This book was referred to me from Amazon where other people that order the same kinds of books I order - also ordered: Sanctuary, The Path to Consciousness. This was about 1 1/2 years ago. I got the book, feeling a little reluctant that it was written in a novel format, but when it was delivered, I started reading, and didn't put it down for a day - until I was finished. It's an easy read. I had to know more about the current energetic balancing program the minute I finished reading the book. I have spent over 20 years studying different modalities for healing, - and understood much of the information and technology described in the book. You tend to "get" these concepts, or you don't. I got it. It is transforming. One of my mentors, Dr. Wayne Dyer writes one of the forwards to this book and has helped others get connected with this self-healing technology described in the novel. The book leads you to the technology available today. GET THE BOOk - Transform your life!!.
phenamenol!!!!!!.......2006-11-07
This book is amazing. You will be amazed by the main characters and their discoveries. It makes you think about your options in life and that the information you are given is not always the most accurate. It is a definite must read if you are one of those that believes there is more to life than what we are told and taught.
Must read!.......2006-08-13
This was a eye opening book that kept me coming back for more. The concept of this book was something I had never heard of before, but I became very open to all the ideas it had to share through the story being told. I highly recoomend this book.

Mediocre.......2000-08-03
Although I was assured by a friend that this book was democrat friendly, I picked up this book expecting a lot more depth than I received.
For a former FBI Agent, Hillin did not have much to say about his subject matter or political influences. If one did not pay attention, the style of prose made it sound like George W. Bush. Several times while reading this book, I felt cheated and realized that there was more good public information than Hillin was promoting.
This book has the thickness and breadth of selections in my mother's junior high school library, and considering it's adult intended target audience, is deeply disturbing. Hillin needs to go back and make substaintial additions to this book in order to do his subject justice.
That a one time house member, senate member, presidential candidate, vice presidential candidate and vice president elect or any ideology (let alone one allegedly shared by the author) could garner such shabby treatment is simply appaling and embarrassing. This book is not recomended for anybody.

Book Description
This elegy celebrates the last years of a happy marriage filled with travel, art, food, and ultimately illness and death. It is at once a travelogue, a record of the finest meals and museums Europe has to offer, a chronicle of family relationships during medical crises, and the story of how, after his wife's death in 1998, the author emerged from grief to enjoy life and travel once again.
Richard Collin and Rima Reck-self described "oddball academics"-shared a rich life. Books, ideas, gastronomy, and trips to the great European and American cultural centers suffused their twenty-eight year marriage. But the last six years were also marked by the overlapping illnesses of the author's parents and the uneven but eventually fatal decline of his wife's health. Collin records with wit and sympathy how he navigated medical bureaucracy and emotional calamity-and how the pleasures of travel provided some relief from grim hospital days.
The author and his wife had four trips planned at the time of her death. Against well-intended advice, Collin made the trips alone. In the process, he was able to grieve for Rima-both for the brilliant, beautiful woman she was through most of their marriage and for the series of gradually deteriorating versions of the original. He learned how to lead a new life as a man capable of enjoying things his wife loved (art and good food) while rediscovering passions of things she did not (opera and long walks).
This is a book about the pain of illness and death, but it is also about the joy of remembering those we have loved-and our surprising capacity to thrive after intense loss.

Book Description
Lord Melbourne was Prime Minister of England from 1834-1841. As mentor and father-figure to the young Queen Victoria, he exerted considerable influence over the first few years of her reign. He was a man to whom career success came rather late - he was forty-eight years old before he held any major governmental office. In a profound way, his character and thinking had already been determined by experiences outside politics - particularly by his Whig social background and his disastrous marriage to Lady Caroline Lamb. In this, the first biography for twenty years, Leslie Mitchell uses the Melbourne family papers to explore the man behind a politician at the heart of early Victorian politics. William Lamb, the second Viscount Melbourne, might have held office earlier had it not been for his marriage to Lady Caroline Ponsonby, whose scandalous public affaires (including one with Byron), preceded a descent into madness and separation from her husband. Her death in 1828 freed Melbourne to take up the career which was almost his birthright. His views and subsequent political rise and survival in high office (almost by accident rather than design), reveal much about the nature of Whig politics - operating as an extension of family relationships and the expression of the shared values of an elite. As Prime Minister, Melbourne became the closest adviser and father figure to the new queen, who was only eighteen years old at her accession in 1837. Her rejection of Melbourne on her marriage to Prince Albert was abrupt and devastating, and Melbourne never really recovered from it. He became a marginalized figure, out of step with the demands of a fast-changing, newly industrialized world. In this fascinating account, Leslie Mitchell fully explores the private and public life of a man destined for high office and greatly influenced by the women in his life.
Customer Reviews:
Queen Victoria's First Prime Minister.......2006-03-24
Melbourne's life story is simply amazing. From his outrageously popular mother (a Whig noblewoman whose multitude of sons each had different--perhaps royal--fathers) and crazily intense wife, Caroline Lamb (a woman who once bit a chunk out of a wine glass when she spied her lover speaking to another woman) to Melbourne's "sexual rivalry" with that poetical superstar of the nineteenth-century, Lord Byron ("mad, bad, and dangerous to know") to, yes, a political career that shone brightly on the world stage (the city of Melbourne, Australia is named for him) this man was the first Prime Minister of Victoria's long reign, and in some ways the one with whom she was closest. The tidbits of Melbourne's personal life and the (ahem) affairs of those around him are here in pleasing detail, but there is no skimping on his political career, or on the world of his times. I found this to be an enjoyable biography of a remarkable man who had the good fortune to dwell in an interesting period and know most of the great figures (of which he was certainly one) of his age.
scholarly, and absorbing for even the non-academic.......1998-06-21
Simply, I read this book because Dr. Mitchell's earlier book on Charles James Fox was so fascinating. While the personalities of the two great men must have made writng about Melbourne a bit harder to enliven, it is a fascinating biography of a man I previously knew very little about.

JFK's favorite book.......2001-09-19
I am not writing this review because I have read this book. I am
writing it because this book is so hard to find. If this book was so important to John F. Kennedy, why is it not available so those interested in the late President can read it to? Should this book not be reissued for other generations to read? It is just a thought from someone who wants to know more about JFK.
Great biography, extremely well written and researched........1998-05-08
I loved this book. Of the many books on the period which I have read, this is probably my favorite. Melbourne is a fascinating character, and the author gives a masterful account of his life. For a period which can be dry if not properly set forth, I found this book to be a real page turner. Lord Cecil gives a thoroughly interesting account of Melbourne's early life, and in particular his stormy relationship with his wife Lady Caroline. She emerges, as is well documented, as bordering upon lunacy. Her antics are well documented and amusing, although I couldn't help feel a sense of frustration that Melbourne was entirely too tolerant of her behaviour. While Melbourne appears to be somewhat wishy-washy, his amiable nature is precisely the key ingedient for his rise to Prime Minister: everyone liked him. Lord Cecil's insight into the evolution of Melbourne's character is fascinating, and reveals something of a tragic figure. Indeed, the later part of Melbourne's life, is sad. Much of the later part of the work is devoted to Melbourne's close relationship with the young Queen Victoria, and upon her marriage, Melbourne's life become tragically empty. The end of the book gives an account of the loneliness of Melbourne's later years, and it reveals Melbourne as more susceptible to bouts of melancholy. But that is the truth of the matter, and it does not detract from the enjoyment of Lord Cecil's work. Finally, it is interesting to note that this book was cited by President John F. Kennedy as his favorite book. Some have attributed this to the accounts of the behavior of the ruling aristocracy in Britain during the whig era, wherein they ruled during the week and ran to the country for parties and relations. I found these desciptions of the book by some of JFK's contemporaries to be inaccurate. While such events are described generally, as they should be to properly account for the period, the focus of Lord Cecil's work is upon the character and evolution of Melbourne himself. This results i! n a comprehensive and altogether enjoyable account of the period. I highly recommend this book.

The Ultimate May-December Relationship!.......2000-12-14
I have long been enamoured of the story of Queen Victoria, but this is one thing I had not known about until I began really reading about her! Plaidy writes a wonderfully flowing novel about the charming young Victoria - newly ascended to the throne of England - and her Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne. As if she doesn't have enough to deal with, the young Queen finds herself falling in love with her advisor, and the feelings are likely reciprocal. Once again, Plaidy does a marvellous job of bringing one of the lesser-investigated (or perhaps more covered-up!) stories of a past monarch. The book is a fast, engaging read, and not at all dry or filled with too many tedious, unneccessary facts about the story (as too many historical novels are!). For anyone wishing to know a little bit more about Queen Victoria or the history of England's monarchs -- this is a book (and author) I highly recommend.

Synopsis.......2007-07-09
Leonid Stein's brilliant chess career was cut tragically short by his untimely death in 1973.Scoring overwhelming victories against the world's leading grandmasters, Stein not only stormed to an incredible total of 3 first prizes (out of 4 attempts) in the USSR Championships between 1963 and 1966, but also won what were arguably the two strongest tournaments of all time,(Moscow 1967 and Moscow 1971). This book is a memorial to this great Master, and pays tribute to Stein's brilliant attacking genius. It includes a detailed biography of Stein, listing his best results, his best games annotated in depth and a chapter devoted to the remarkable miniature games he won against world class opposition. Raymond Keene was a personal friend of Stein and played against him twice in international competition. He is a British Chess Champion, and the first British Player to achieve a FIDE (World Chess Federation) Grandmaster norm. He was awarded the OBE for services to chess in 1985. He is Chess Correspondent of The Times, The Sunday Times, The Spectator, and The International Herald Tribune. He is a prolific author of chess books, several of which are classics of the genre. He has organised three World Chess Championships.
a really enjoyable read.......2002-12-02
many modern chess books look like telephone directory print out-not this book. it is full of brilliant games, queen sacrifices, dashing attacks, all annotated in a liveley fireside manner.
leonid stein was a ukrainian grandmaster who won the ussr championship three times as well as winning two of the strongest ever international tournaments. this book is a fitting memorial for him!
sacrificial gems by a soviet champion.......2002-12-02
this is a wonderful book packed full of games , results, biography and miniatures by the brilliant soviet chess champion who died at a tragically early age. the games are annotated in depth and include wins against such titans as botvinnik, tal, petrosian, smyslov and keres.
brilliant games by attacking genius.......2002-11-12
leonid stein was a genius of attack who beat botvinnik, tal petrosian, smyslov, keres and a host of others. the games here are annotated very carefully and in highly readable form by the grandmaster correspondent of the london times and the international herald tribune. every game is a joy to play over. some people have claimed that some of the games are not by stein. this is simply untrue. every game is well authenticated and there will be some marvellous sacrificial treats very lucidly explained for anyone who buys the book. there is also a biography of stein with his most important results spelled out in detail.watch out for stein's immortal game against krogius!!
A great player, almost a great book.......2001-11-30
Buy this book if it comes up at a low price or as used. Great collection of attacking games. Keene provides adequate notes without enough depth, the biographic stuff is good and Stein really deserves the worshipful writing of his life, e.g. a great player whose is twice robbed by FIDE (chess bureaurocracy) of his shot at real greatness - i.e. to play for qualification to challenge for the world title. The games are all excellent (though Gufeld claims a few are not actually Stein's ?!) A great feature of this book are the two dozen short games at the end. However the book that Stein deserves is still unwritten. This book fails to cover his positional style, endgame play, the full extent of his will to win and opening influence. This work is better than nothing, rescues the memory of of a chess genius of the 60's and is readable for all classess of chess players - the games are very imspiring. Keene's decent job should have been better.
