5 out of 5 stars Systems Thinking Approach.......2007-09-29

This is the best book I have ever read on the Systems Thinking Approach to large-scale change in a simple, clear and practical manner. This book has many ways to make it an easy read--chapter summaries, questions to ponder, etc.
This book could easily be used as a capstone course in OD--while it appears a set of solid basics, it is also a way to be disciplined in your thinking to maximize your opportunity for success. '
I would recommend this book to every executive and change agent who is tired of single change initiatives that only give minimal results.

A good, readable book on the basics of CM. Great for people new to the practice.

                Book Description

Astrophysics is facing challenging aims such as deep cosmology at redshift higher than 10 to constrain cosmology models, or the detection of exoplanets, and possibly terrestrial exoplanets, and several others. It requires unprecedented ambitious R&D programs, which have definitely to rely on a tight cooperation between astrophysics and optics communities.

The book addresses most of the most critical interdisciplinary domains where they interact, or where they will do. A first need is to collect more light, i.e. telescopes still larger than the current 8-10 meter class ones. Decametric, and even hectometric, optical (from UV to IR wavelengths) telescopes are being studied. Whereas up to now the light collecting surface of new telescopes was approximately 4 times that of the previous generation, now this factor is growing to 10 to 100. This quantum leap urges to implement new methods or technologies developed in the optics community, both in academic labs and in the industry. Given the astrophysical goals and technological constraints, new generation adaptive optics with a huge number of actuators and laser guide stars devices have to be developed, from theoretical bases to experimental works.

Two other newcomers in observational astrophysics are interferometric arrays of optical telescopes and gravitational wave detectors. Up-to-date reviews of detectors and of spectrographs are given, as well as forefront R&D in the field of optical coatings and of guided optics. Possible new ways to handle photons are also addressed, based on quantum physics. More and more signal processing algorithms are a part and parcel of any modern instrumentation. Thus finally the book gives two reviews about wavefront processing and about image restoration and deconvolution algorithms for ill conditioned cases.

Tells the story of how Rodriguez got to where he is. Everyone's road is very different but this is definitely an inspiring book. Hone your skills!

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-08-14

I bought this thinking it would be more of a guide then the journal it ended up being, and I couldnt have been happier. It was an interesting and easy read that I couldnt put down! I would definitely recommend this book to any young filmmakers or anyone interested in the independent process. Rodriguez really does a great job of showing how a lot of hard work, dedication and some luck can jump start a career. I felt inspired to go out and start working on films again, but I'm still reluctant to join any medical experiments to finance it.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting insight into a very talented man.......2007-08-06

A great tale, but not so well written that I could recommend on its literary quality alone. I admire Rodriguez - even more, knowing what he went through to make this film (and I'm a fan El Mariachi more than the overly-produced Once Upon a Time in Mexico). The story-telling reflects his jagged style. At the very least, it should inspire you to make a few sacrifices in favor of pursuing one of your own dreams.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired and Inspiring .......2007-07-03

This was a great read! Highly recommended for anyone thinking about putting a story on film.

Before he was forty, ex-marine captain Charles Colson was appointed special counsel to President Richard Nixon; he was Nixon's Watergate hatchet man. By the time Nixon resigned in the summer of 1974, Colson was a convicted felon. In prison, his religious conversion, which had begun before he started his sentence, was fortified and reaffirmed. When he was released, he founded Prison Fellowship Ministries, which is now the largest prison outreach in history.

For the first time, John Perry tells the whole story of Colson's life and conversion and holds him up as dramatic proof that no one is beyond God's power to save.

2 out of 5 stars Hagiography for the 21st century.......2003-12-23

Hagiographies were, historically, written for the edification of the faithful. That describes this disappointing work rather well: for those who wish to hear only the positive, and the classic story of repentance and redemption, the basic story is competently told, and it will, perhaps, serve its purpose. But it offers little or nothing to the thinking Christian (or non-) reader: there is little or no critical evaluation of Colson and his story and (disappointing to this reader) little too on the remarkable movement that he has been so involved in creating and leading, Prison Fellowship. Colson's is an inspiring story, but little or no purpose is served by setting him up as a plaster saint. There is a fascinating tale to be told, and real Christians still struggle today with the moral ambiguities and compromises of life in the world's centres of power. Sadly, this book is not the one for them.

                5 out of 5 stars Watergate Revisited.......2003-07-01

I have always professed that Chuck Colson is one of my living heroes of the faith. Now I remember why.

John Perry does an excellent job of revisiting Watergate through the eyes of the guy who supposedly would run over his own grandma to get Richard Nixon elected. Like the previous statement there is much we think we know of Colson which is actually the stuff of mythology. For instance, he was convicted of Watergate-related crimes, right? You are wrong Bebe Rebozo breath!!! (Read the book and find out about his actual self-inflicted conviction.)

Perry's research is thorough and his storytelling and pace compelling. He caused me to do something I have never done before. I picked up the book at 8 PM on a Saturday night and didn't put it down until I was finished at 4:30 AM. The next morning my pastor wanted to know why I was yawning during his sermon... offered fresh perspective and riveting detail to the still unfolding story that is Chuck Colson's legacy as a man and as a Christian.

                Book Description

This detailed biography of a man who flourished in two very different worlds opens a new doorway into the societies of prerevolutionary France and postrevolutionary Georgia. Christophe Poulain DuBignon (1739-1825) was the son of an impoverished Bréton aristocrat. Breaking social convention to engage in trade, he began his long career first as a cabin boy in the navy of the French India Company and later as a sea captain and privateer. After retiring from the sea, DuBignon lived in France as a "bourgeois noble" with income from land, moneylending, and manufacturing.

Uprooted by the French Revolution, DuBignon fled to Georgia late in 1790, settling among other refugees from France and the Caribbean. A community long overlooked by historians of the American South, this circle of planters, nobles, and bourgeois was bound together by language, a shared faith, and the émigré experience.

On his Jekyll Island slave plantation, DuBignon learned to cultivate cotton. However, he underwrote his new life through investments on both sides of the Atlantic, extending his business ties to Charleston, Liverpool, and Nantes. None of his ventures, Martha L. Keber notes, compelled DuBignon to dwell long on the inconsistencies between his entrepreneurial drive and his noble heritage. His worldview always remained aristocratic, patriarchal, and conservative.

DuBignon's passage of eighty-six years took him from a tradition-bound Europe to the entrepôts of the Indian Ocean to the plantation culture of a Georgia barrier island. Wherever he went, commerce was the constant. Based on Keber's exhaustive research in European, African, and American archives, Seas of Gold, Seas of Cotton portrays a resilient nobleman so well schooled in the principles of the marketplace that he prospered in the Old World and the New.

5 out of 5 stars The Journey Back.......2002-10-14

Through this carefully researched biography the reader is transported into the midst of the French Revolution, the American Revolution, and plantation life on Jekyll Island, Georgia. The globe hopping Captain DuBignon experienced so much during his 86 years, and Martha Keber has crafted a riveting account of the small and large events that shaped his life journey. Whether plying the blue waters of the Indian Ocean or the halls of the Savannah Courthouse, DuBignon succeeded in furthering his interests and preserving his family's well-being through some of the most turbulent times in history. This is a detailed look at a fascinating man with seawater in his veins and account ledgers on his mind.

                      5 out of 5 stars A book worthy of a movie.......2006-08-16

I found this book incredibly insightful and admire the courage it took for Carol Hebald to open up her life and let us in. Her story is probably one of thousands if not millions who have been misdiagnosed by the mental health profession. By the end of the book it seemed perfectly clear to me that if Carol had not taken control of her own life and had not thrown the toxic pharmaceutical cocktails overboard once and for all, she would have been a lifelong victim of psychiatry. Carol's book can help countless people realize the label they have been given by the psychiatrist is just that, a label, with no actual meaning or strength to it, except that which the individual or society grants to it. I applaud her for writing a book that can and will change people's life for the better!

5 out of 5 stars Behind the poet.......2003-10-03

Anyone who is fortunate enough to have encountered Carol Hebald's poetry knows the wonder of being exposed to an extraordinary talent, one which some of today's most successful authors and novelists envy.

Now we know at what cost to her this skill was engendered.

I would like to see an annotated volume, in which her poetry can be read in the context of the story that unfolds in "The Heart Too Long Suppressed".

                      4 out of 5 stars powerful autobiography.......2003-08-18

As a child, Ms. Hebald had no allies once her father died, but even he, on his deathbed, "abused" her when she was five. Others from her mom to her baby-sitter to her lovers to her doctors made her feel that life is miserable. For instance, as a teen a psychiatrist acclaimed she was a sure shot suicide. A series of hospitals and a bunch of losers with psychiatrist degree provided Ms. Hebald little solace, plenty of unhelpful advice and turned her stomach into a chemical processing plant. Finally at forty-four, she decided it was time to recycle her life starting with dumping her drug paraphernalia into the ocean.

Readers should understand this is not an easy memoir to follow as Carol Hebald goes deep inside her brain to her soul to explain four decades of mental illness highlighted by several suicide attempts. The author is all over the place with the influences in her life turning her autobio somewhat into a NYC rush hour train. Though it is difficult to follow her narrative, the audience will find it worth the time for anyone dealing with mental illness or a family member because overall this is a powerful condemnation warning for the buyer to beware.

                      5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2001-10-24

Carol Hebald's story of overcoming the assumed difficulties that she would have in life is an inspiration; not only to those who have dealt with mental illness, but also to those who have had real and/or perceived constraints put upon them by various medical facilities/personal. I enjoyed reading Carol's memoires and sharing in the tales that brought her to where she is now.

                      5 out of 5 stars A major accomplishment........2001-06-02

Intimate in its personal revelations, yet universal in scope, The Heart Too Long Suppressed is a powerful and gripping account of one woman's courageous struggle to come to terms with a difficult past. Toward the end of the book, Hebald speaks briefly about "pain as nourishment" for the artist. Herein lies her strength: She transforms tragedy into lyrical art. I was struck throughout by her dazzling shifts of tone. Her ability to balance between acute perception and precarious illness is nothing short of amazing. This book is a major accomplishment. I recommend it enthusiastically and without reservation.
