Taking one of the original thoeries of warfare, and applying it to modern day management is a trick in itself. This book is deep and well written, and not to be taken lightly. It is well worth the time to obtain it, then slowly meditate on the wisdom given.

5 out of 5 stars Review from IARP (Arjan Kuijper).......2006-10-21

When attending a general computer vision conference like xCCV, did you ever feel lost at certain sessions? Well, don't always blame the presenters! The field covered by Computer Vision has become so broad that it is almost impossible to understand what is going on and to keep track of the latest developments. To (partially) overcome this problem, the editors of the Handbook of Mathematical Models in Computer Vision have done a great job.

One can become a bit skeptical reading such a title. How complete can such a handbook be? However, going through the 33 chapters, indeed a wide breadth is treated. The focus of the book is on mathematical methods that both model and reproduce human visual abilities. This is the field of biological vision in which the editors have a strong background.

The editors chose three distinct categories of mathematical models, namely variational techniques (those attending Prof. Faugeras' talk at ICPR 2006 may remember his statement that they give the fundamental equations in computer vision!), statistical methods, and combinatorial approaches. The chapters are grouped in six sections that circle around these three categories. Although going through the book chapters by mentioning keyword may yield a rather boring list, it shows the wide variety of topics that are being dealt with.

The book starts with a section on low-level vision: Image Reconstruction. Here one can find information on diffusion filters and wavelets, total variation methods, and PDE based inpainting.

The second section is concerned with Boundary Extraction, Segmentation and Grouping. Here subjects like levelings, graph cuts, minimal paths and fast marching methods, deformable models, variational segmentation with shape priors, curve propagation, level set methods, and a stochastic model of geometric snakes are discussed.

Section three switches to high level vision. It deals with Shape Modeling & Registration, divided into topics concerning invariant processing and occlusion resistant recognition, image-based inferences, point matching and uncertainty-driven, point-based image registration.

In the fourth section, Motion Analysis, Optical Flow & Tracking, the concept of time is added and one encounters the topics of optical flow estimation, image warping, alignment and stitching, visual tracking, image and video segmentation, human motion capture, and dynamic textures.

Section five deals with 3D from Images, Projective Geometry & Stereo Reconstruction, treated by boundary detection, stereo, texture and color, shape from shading, calibration, motion and shape recovery, multi-view reconstruction, binocular stereo with occlusions, and modeling non-rigid dynamic scenes.

The last section may seem a bit odd: Applications: Medical Image Analysis. However, this is one of the most prominent areas in computer vision. Although here certain vision aspects do not occur, compared to natural images (just think of the influence of the sun), for many tasks the performance of the mathematical methods can be evaluated since a ground truth is often available - provided by humans whom the models are supposed to mimic. In this section, applications of interactive graph-based segmentation methods, 3D active shape and appearance models, characterization of diffusion anisotropy, segmentation, variational approaches, and statistical methods of registration are given.

The danger of publishing an edited volume is the difference in style and treatment of the topics among the various contributions. This is not the case here. Each chapter gives a general introduction to the topic, introduces the mathematical model, discusses the underlying ideas globally, and shows some results. For the full details the readers are referred to the extensive bibliography with 929 entries.

This book is a must-have for those interested in the full breadth of research done in the biological & computer vision community. As a bonus, the chapters can also be used in a seminar-based, advanced undergraduate course in mathematical based computer vision.

Hey I think it needs to be pointed out that this is not the Jane Eyre book by Charlotte Bronte. It is a Cliffs Notes Study Guide version. This is good to read but only if you have read the whole book by Bronte and you have to write a book report and just need some references from the Cliff Notes version if there was something in the book that you didn't understand. Don't try to con your teacher by only reading the Cliff Notes version. Just read the book and read a great story and impress your teacher. It always amazes me how dumb some students can be by trying to cheat with Cliff Notes, I mean the teacher always can tell when someone has done it too so it's not like they are fooling anyone. Cliffs Notes are actually good an an extra study guide but have gotten a bad rap because of the sneaky cheaters who used it as cheat sheets and tried to pretend that they read the whole book!

4 out of 5 stars Almost the best.......2003-05-16

I think that Jane Eyre was almost the best book. The only problem was the ending. All her life Jane has gotten the short end of the stick. Why for once can't this go her way? Why can't she have a normal husband? Why can't she have a break for once?

Former Israeli prime minister Shimon Peres combines history, memoir, and fiction in an "imaginary voyage" through 20th-century Israel with the 19th-century founder of modern Zionism, Theodor Herzl. "Only the narrow-minded and unimaginative will find this premise off-putting or surprising," Peres explains. "Everyone else has long known that in our country the impossible is a way of life." This make-believe tour includes a brief description of the Holocaust for a man who initially would have disbelieved it, plus vignettes of life in the Jewish nation-state ("I had no idea whether Herzl would appreciate the pleasure of today's Tel Aviv nightlife. I had a hard time picturing him dancing to some disc jockey's rock 'n' roll, or taking part in a rave on one of the converted docks at Jaffa"). Peres also uses Herzl as a tool for projecting some of his own views on contemporary Israeli politics: "[Herzl] sternly disapproved of the role religious parties play in governing Israel today.... I am concerned about the growing schism between the religious and the secular factions in Israel. The former, to be quite honest, have proven themselves far more vindictive than the latter. If we are not careful, this latent conflict could divide Israel and Israeli society, and encourage intolerance and discourage progress." The Imaginary Voyage is a quickly read tale full of charming idiosyncrasies and edgy political observations. --John J. Miller

                          3 out of 5 stars Comparing visions.......2004-03-15

Shimon Peres, Nobel Peace Prize winner and a former prime minister of Israel, finds a way to examine how far Israel has come in a half-century by conducting an imaginary tour of the Holy Land for Theodor Herzl, father of Zionism. While the prose is hardly exotic, Peres does offer some keen and thought-provoking analysis. The book is recommended for readers with an interest in modern Israel.

4 out of 5 stars Two Visionaries, Different Eras.......1999-07-30

Peres takes Herzl on an imaginary tour through Israel, a century after Herzl's first visit to Palestine. The author makes astute observations about Tel Aviv and Jerusalem and the spectacular changes these and other cities in Israel have undergone throughout the years.

Peres evaluates the predictions made by Herzl in his utopian novel, Old-New Land, in light of present-day realities. Of course, some of them were totally off-base, but others are amazingly prescient. And, in discussing the character of the Jewish state and how it ought to deal with its neighbors, Peres quotes extensively from Herzl's writings and the works of other Zionist thinkers (e.g., Ahad Ha'am).

Despite the mediocre editing job, there is plenty of keen insight on issues ranging from cultural/religious/ethnic diversity to the water problem in the Middle East that make this book a good read.

                          Book Description

In addition to becoming a nationwide bestseller, Jocks changed the face of athletics forever. Gay athletes realized they were not alone, young gay athletes discovered role models, and straight people learned that gay people are their teammates and coaches. Much has changed since its publication in 1998: Gay jocks are coming out even in high school, gay sports teams compete in every major city, and in almost every major sport-even testosterone-fueled contests such as rodeo, snowboarding, and mountain biking-there are openly gay competitors. But the locker room is still far from a friendly place for out athletes, so with Jocks 2, author and journalist Dan Woog introduces us to a group of gay athletes including:

                          ??

The first openly gay college athletic director in the United States. .
? A gay mountaineer who became the first deaf instructor hired by Outward Bound. .
                          ? An Ironman competitor. .
? An HIV-positive former street hustler whose life was changed by wrestling. .
? A student manager driven from his college team by the athletes he admired. .
? A baseball fanatic who finally found self-esteem on the diamond.

                          ??

These pointed, dynamic, and often triumphant profiles of gay athletes continue the tradition of illustrating that gay people are the friends, colleagues, neighbors, and teammates of all Americans.

                          ??

A valuable resource for libraries, educators, coaches, and school counselors in overcoming stereotypes, providing encouragement for gay youth, and dispelling myths about sexuality among athletes.

                          ??

Dan Woog is a journalist, educator, soccer coach, and gay activist. He is the author of 12 books, including Jocks; Gay Men, Straight Jobs; and Schools Out. His articles and essays have appeared in The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, and USA Today, and he is a contributing writer for The Advocate magazine. He lives in Westport, Connecticut.

Truly amazing stories...guys like Warren Cohn give inspiration to tens of thousands of youth, adolescents and teens struggling to identify with who they are and what they want to become. His story, and those of others in the book, teach us that you can continue to be who you, what you are and never ever falter from that path. We do not choose who we are, it is chosen for us...but the path we puruse is something we do choose, and like warren's actions, it can be one that's admirable, honest, full of integrity and wholly sincere. Kudos to you Warren, and the men of Jocks, for living life for who you are and making no apologies. Inspirations to us all!!

I bought Dan Woog's Jocks a few years ago, and after a few of the reads posted a 5-star review of it. And I give this book the same review. It is an excellent insight into the competitive world of sport, and how so many athletes suffer.

Being someone who loves more of the less-known sports, I found the inclusion of those kinds of sports very welcome. They give me valuable insight into how those sports have a slightly different view of things, but still have the same problems.

                          A definite thumbs up.

those who know folks into either or both !! These stories are truly inspiring and insightful, heart-renching and awe-felt! The author did a great job of capturing the role models like Warren Cohn, and the heros like Rafael Cruz Rivera in a way that serves to provide a path for youths as well as pride for some parents. It reinforces the notion that men and women can still be gay and athletic, that being homosexual doesn't force one to leave their masculinity at the door. Well done Dan Woog, and more importantly well done to those whose stories you told.
