BUILDING A FAIR PAY PROGRAM Second Edition

Since 1986 this definitive, step-by-step resource has guided compensation and human resources professionals in one of the most challenging tasks they face -- designing and implementing an effective and fair pay program.

Now expanded and updated, this popular guide provides an comprehensive model that is easy to adapt to the particular needs of individual companies. It shows how to tie the pay program to the organization's strategic plan ... understand and choose among the many pay-plan options available ... analyze and evaluate specific jobs ... communicate the plan to employees ... and link pay to performance by focusing on results actually achieved.

ROJER J. and SANDRA J. PLACHY (Winston-Salem, NC) are principals of the Job Results Management Institute, a firm that helps managers focus on results needed to achieve organizational goals. They are the authors of Results-Oriented Job Descriptions and More Results-Oriented Job Descriptions (both Amacom).

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!! Perfect for compensation novices.......2005-12-12

I run my own company where more often than not, I have to be chief cook and bottle washer. I knew some aspects of setting up a compensation program, but this book was a revelation. The first 80 pages or so are about getting a comp plan through corporate obstacles and so didn't apply to my small business, but the rest of the book was perfect. It logically guides you through establishing the purpose of your company in written form, and then building every single job description as an extension of that purpose and rewarding the job accordingly. It makes so much practical sense, and yet it wasn't obvious from the outset. This book will be invaluable to anyone trying to cook up their own compensation structure.

5 out of 5 stars An exceptional guide for HR / compensation practitioners.......2001-04-25

'Building a Fair Pay Program' is an important contribution to compensation/pay management literature. Roger J. Plachy and Sandra J. Plachy summarize their main themes that distinguish this book from other books on pay management as following:

    1. Pay management is built on an integrated and coherent job results management strategy.

    2. An organization's mission is fulfilled by employees through contributions of job results.

    3. The critical architecture for managing job contributions is a profile of job results, job duties, and four possible outcomes.

    4. Pay is based on job contributions.

    5. Results-oriented (nonbehavioral), objective (nonsubjective) thinking is applied in detailed to each element of pay management.

For any compensation and HR practitioners who want to gain a competitive advantage through the strategic use of their compensation system, R.J.Plachy and S.J.Plachy provide an exceptional guide.

    Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A helpful, complete and clearly written how-to manual........1999-03-29

This is an excellent how-to manual that covers job analysis and evaluation, developing pay grades and ranges, surveying the market, and writing policies and procedures. The book presents guidelines and a detailed plan of action for building a pay program. The process involves nine phases beginning with knowing the organization (its aims and issues) through maintaining the program.

This a detailed, do-it-yourself manual, which includes numerous key question guides, examples, formats, and illustrations. Overall, this book offers a specific approach that does NOT leave readers on their own to figure things out. Recommended. 3 out of 5 stars Good preview to USMLE 1.......2000-03-25

This book is good for second year medical students taking Step 1 of the USMLE. It's a concise and comprehensive text of what you'll need to know for Step 1. If you understand the material in this book, you will do alright on Step 1. The information could be better organized (and it's not fully comprehensive), but otherwise this book is well recommended.

          Book Description

This monograph deals with the effects of reactant spatial correlations arising in the course of basic bimolecular reactions describing defect recombination, energy transfer and exciton annihilation in condensed matter. These effects lead to the kinetics considered abnormal from the standard chemical kinetics point of view. Numerous bimolecular reaction regimes and conditions are analysed in detail. Special attention is paid to the development and numerous applications of a novel, many-point density (MPD) formalism, which is based on Kirkwood's superposition approximation used for decoupling three-particle correlation functions.

The book demonstrates that incorporation of the reaction-induced spatial correlations of similar reactants (e.g., vacancy-vacancy) leads to the development of an essentially non-Poisson spectrum of reactant density fluctuations. This can completely change the kinetics at longer times since it no longer obeys the law of mass action. The language of the correlation lengths and critical exponents similar to physics of critical phenomena is used instead. A relation between MPD theory and synergistics is discussed. The validity of the theorem giving a critical complexity for the two-step reactions exhibiting self-organization phenomena is questioned. Theoretical results are illustrated by numerous experimental data.

4 out of 5 stars Good for a last book in the series!.......2007-09-14

I have been enjoying the turn-of-the-century series written by the husband and wife team of Bill and Susan Albert. I am actually sorry to see the end of this series. It was always a nice blend of fictional and historical characters, and the mysteries were always fun to figure out. Also, the time that the series is set in is when there were so many technological changes (the motor car, wireless transmitting, photography, etc) It's always informative to see how these things started and the author team always did their research. In this book we meet Marconi and are in at the ground floor of wireless transmissions. We are also in the very beginnings that set up for World War I. English people were just beginning to question what was actually going on in Germany with the Kaiser at the helm. This book also gives us a wonderful picture of the beautiful Cornwall scenery. I highly recommend this series for those who love historical mysteries. Start at Book 1 and read and enjoy right up to Book 12.

Death on the Lizard: An Edwardian Mystery
              Robin Paige

The Lizard, a peninsula in the extreme south west of England, was the site chosen by Marconi to send the first transatlantic wireless signal early in the twentieth century. The husband and wife writing team who go under the pseudonym Robin Paige have made this the event and location for another of their British historical mysteries.
The team of Kate and Charles Sheridan are involved in investigating a couple of sudden and unexplained deaths that threaten Marconi's work. It is this focus on the very early days of wireless transmissions that lifts the book out of the ordinary. Marconi's pioneering work is well known. Less well known are the other companies and individuals who were striving to implement other similar systems, or to retain the older system of communicating via transatlantic cable. Their machinations, and the research done to uncover them, add a great deal to the book.
The plot is satisfying in its complexity and the characters are vivid. This is basically a masculine tale, but there is a large enough role for Kate and her friends - light relief, really, from the main action - that the reader does not feel overwhelmed with scientific detail. As always the pacing is excellent, the conflict mounts to an interesting series of climaxes and the stakes are naturally very high.
What spoiled the book, for me, was the accent on Lord and Lady This and Lord and Lady That. They say the English are class conscious but this pair of Texans seem more class conscious than any English person I ever met. They even throw in an upcoming visit from royalty in case all the lords and ladies mentioned were not enough. Maybe it was an attempt at satire. I also got rather tired of the glowing description of Cornwall. Yes, it's a beautiful part of the world, but azure/ceruleanskies get a bit much chapter after chapter.
I'm a big fan of Susan Wittig Albert's China Bayles mysteries set in Texas. The Albert's live in Texas and have a feeling for it. It comes across in a strong and genuine fashion. I find their portrayal of England is disappointingly shallow.

              4 out of 5 stars #12.......2006-03-29

Kate & Charles Sheridan are back in their 12th novel, set in Cornwall in 1903. The well-known person featured in this story is Edward Marconi, who is working on his new technology, the telegraph. Charles is asked to investigate some strange happenings with Marconi's company, while Kate (separately) was asked to help a friend in the same area who is grieving for her daughter's recent death. While Kate is ferreting out the mysterious goings-on with the child's death, Charles is knee-deep in bodies and clues. The two are kept busy, but manage to solve the cases but not without some danger to themselves. Not my favorite of their (Bill & Susan Wittig Albert) stories, but another good read.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic historical mystery.......2006-02-08

Two years earlier, though the competition is fierce, the Marconi Wireless Telegraphy Company successfully sent the first wireless message across the Atlantic from their Bass Point Station in Lizard Village, Cornwall. However, by 1903 much of the initial euphoria has worn off as sabotage slows down progress. More frightening, a fisherman finds the battered body of Jack Gordon who the officials declared fell off the nearby cliff to his accidental death. When a second accident leaves another employee dead, the company and the locals conjecture whether a rival is warning off the workforce; no one believes an accident occurred as two tragedies so close together seem too coincidental especially since more damaging disruption including the stealing of a key valuable piece of equipment has occurred at the wireless station.

While Lady Kate Sheridan visits her grieving friend Lady Jenna Loveday, whose daughter Harriet recently drowned, local authorities ask her husband Charles, a successful amateur sleuth, to investigate the two "accidental" deaths that they now believe are homicides. He soon connects Harriet's drowning, the deaths of the employees of the wireless company to the industrial espionage and sabotage, but that knowledge places Charles and Kate in danger from a person willing to kill to take control of the growing international communications business.

DEATH ON THE LIZARD is a fantastic historical mystery, which in spite of a wonderful who-done-it investigation, the early twentieth century communication technology takes front and center as readers cannot help but to compare it with cell phones and internet instant chat lines, etc. The story line is action-packed, but also provides a deep historical look at Cornwall and at the beginnings of the technology revolution. The key cast members, not just the sleuthing marital team, are fully developed as Team Paige is at their best with this insightful look at the late Victorian Age.

                                  Book Description

Political corruption is easy to define—the use of public office for private gain—but it isn't so readily seen because politicians cover their tracks so well.

Four of America's most corrupt mayors and their shady dealings are covered in this work. "Big Bill" Thompson, who was mayor of Chicago three times, is considered America's worst mayor, having, among other questionable activities, accepted support from gangster Al Capone. Frank Hague of Jersey City described his town as the "moralest city in the nation" and banished prostitution and pornography, but he saw no evil in gambling and Jersey City became a gambling mecca. Jimmy Walker of New York City was a "good time" mayor and did well as the city prospered, but cared little for the city's money and his own when the Great Depression struck. James Michael Curley of Boston openly asserted that "politics is my business," but he flaunted a lavish home built entirely at the public's expense and was elected again and again, once while he was still in jail.

                                            Book Description

Just A Little Country Boy is a story of the trials in the life of a young black boy born during the late Depression years in Arkansas. In 1940, when segregation was at its worst in the South, his father moved the family to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in search of a better life. An industrial revolution was taking place throughout the North at the time, offering better employment opportunities for the black man. Therefore the Black Migration began with black families leaving the servile attitudes of the South with the dreams of a better life. LeRoy Allen was blessed with good, hard-working parents who taught him to take pride in himself, to work hard, use good manners, and to respect all people. As a teenager, he took an interest in, and competed in almost all sports, but his big interest was boxing. He became Wisconsin's State Golden Gloves champion for 3 different years. Later, he spent a few years as a professional boxer, meeting and sparring with many well-known boxers of that era. As a young adult, he became more aware of the prejudices and inequities surrounding the black man. Most of his adult years were spent moving from job to job, trying to improve his circumstances, while searching for decent employment to support his growing family. After experiencing nearly 50 different jobs, he succeeded in being hired into a position for which he was trained and well qualified. He was well into middle age before the job market began to hire women or blacks into responsible positions. Mr. Allen records many of the changes in the attitudes towards blacks in Milwaukee, and across the nation, as they occured during the last half of the 20th century. It is a story of faith, determination, and fortitude and a real insight into our nation's awakening to the talents of our black citizens and our growing respect for their contributions to our society.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Important Book I Have Read In Five Years.......2004-07-18

A group of high achieving African American high school seniors received this book as part of the "Achievers" program sponsored by the local chapter of the Links. As an African American in mid-career, I decided to get a copy for myself. It was the most important book I have read in at least five years.

The stories are, as a whole, optimistic but also bracingly honest about the obstacles these remarkable professionals have faced. It will inspire the young to believe that their goals are attainable. It will encourage those in mid-career to see that their progress, though uneven, is sustainable. And it will reassure those looking back at the end of their careers that their life's work has been significant if it has made it possible for even one or two others to achieve behind them. I read about one of these stories a day in the gym and frequently caught myself nodding in recognition at the experiences described.

The last profile in the book is of Deborah C. Wright, President and CEO of Carver Federal Savings Bank. The very last line in her profile, and thus the very last line in the book, is "[M]y prayers each morning are, 'God, just make me open to whatever the lesson is so I can get it and get on to the next one.'" AMEN!

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring read.......2002-01-19

This is an engaging book and passionate book. The profiles focus on a diverse crowd, from Ken Chenault, CEO of American Express, to Kevin Clash, the Sesame Street puppeteer behind Elmo; all of the stories are truly moving.

                                                        5 out of 5 stars It Is A Lesson!.......2001-03-02

This book is educational and inspirational for those who are looking for a little guidance on how to succeed in this society. It was like taking a class with more than one guest speaker in many professional fields.

Take a Lesson is a fantastic book that shares the personal stories of many successful African-American individuals who have succeeded with great distincition. Not only did I find the content entertaining, but the words ignite feelings of courage, hope, and persevarence that I'm sure will serve me well. I also think it is important to note that while most of those profiled stand at the cutting edge of capitalism, they also remain sensitive to social and human values, a balance which I think all should keep in mind.

Take a Lesson is a great book for people of all ages. It is a collection of advice from all the people I have grown to admire. In this book they are not putting on a professional face. They are telling the truth about how they struggled in their lives and businesses; and how they won out. I read one every day for inspiration.
