The Best Explanation for Non-Scientists.......2002-09-09
Kitty Ferguson has an amazing gift for translating incredibly difficult concepts from modern physics into language that anybody can grasp. "Prisons of Light" is a great example. If you want to understand black holes, but you know nothing of calculus or quantum dynamics, than this is the book for you. It is enjoyable reading and informative in the extreme. It is the place to start in this subject area. Highly recommended!
Amazing Book........2002-01-12
This is for those who failed to read 'Brief History of Time'. It explains complex theories with a clarity that astounds.
I read through the whole thing in less than 2 days, it was compelling as a novel. This is indeed a great book that makes complicated physics as easy as pie.
The Best Book yet on Black Holes!.......1999-01-22
Have you ever wanted to persue reading about black holes, yet didn't feel like having to read it over and over to understand what is really being said? Well this is the exact book you should perchase. It is one of the most easy to read book and it trys to avoid all of the astronomical jargin that can get some people confused. And at the same time it teaches you so much in so little time. I know I was on page 79 before I knew it. I just could not put it down! Make sure you get it!

Book Description
Fresh ideas have always been a necessary ingredient for progress in chemistry. Without a continuous supply of stimulating ideas from creative researchers, there would be no new insights into the subject. But what are some of the ideas that pervade modern chemistry? The answer to this question is to be found in "Stimulating Concepts in Chemistry". In a collection of 24 essays, a group of leading researchers provides an overview of the most recent developments in their fields.
Readers can find out about modern concepts in chemistry such as self-assembly, nanochemistry, and molecular machines. Moreover, many spectacular advances have been achieved from the fusion of chemistry with life and materials science - a development which is illustrated by contributions on enzyme mimics, molecular wires, and chemical sensors. Further, the essayists write about new nanomaterials, efficient methods in synthesis, and big biomolecules - indeed, many of the topics that have dominated some of the recent discussions in chemistry.
This outstanding text makes use of a special layout to reflect the editors' aim of presenting concepts in the form of essays. Thus, the book is not merely another source of knowledge but is intended to stimulate readers to develop their own ideas and concepts.
This format should help to make the book interesting to a wide range of scientists. Students of chemistry will benefit from the different style of presentation of their subject, while researchers in industry and academia will welcome the exciting way in which some of the most challenging concepts in modern chemistry are presented.

Book Description
Written by the leading experts in the field, this book examines the evolutionary advantages of gender dimorphism - the occurence of two sexual forms - and sexual dimorphism - dimorphism in secondary sex characters - in flowering plants. Gender dimorphism is found in approximately 10% of flowering plant species and has been an active topic of research. By contrast, sexual dimorphism in plants is much less widely appreciated. The book consists of three sections: The first introduces readers to the tremendous variety of breeding systems and their evolution in plants and sets the stage for a consideration of the evolution of dimorphism in reproductive and non-reproductive characters. The second section deals with the evolution of secondary sexual characters, including the theory related to the evolution of sexual dimorphism and its empirical patterns. The last section deals with the genetics of gender expression and of secondary sexual characters.

Book Description
Tim LaHaye has called Babylon Rising his most exciting series ever, and
The Europa Conspiracy is the most thrilling and suspenseful installment yet. Reaching back to some of the most dramatic and prophetically significant stories of the Bible, and forward to the creation of ultimate evil in the modern world, the awe-inspiring revelations never let up. It begins when Michael Murphy heads to the ancient city of Babylon in pursuit of one of the most famous and mystifying of Biblical prophecies: The Handwriting on the Wall. But the closer he gets to deciphering the true meaning of Daniel’s ancient message for our troubled times, the closer Murphy comes to a shattering confrontation with the forces of darkness that will cause the earth itself to tremble.
In
The Europa Conspiracy, Tim LaHaye once again shows how his thrill-a-minute storytelling and deep understanding of the Bible have combined to make him one of today’s most popular and influential fiction authors.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
great book!.......2007-05-07
As usual, another great book from Tim LaHaye. Not too nuts about the ending, but that just means i have to buy the next book :)
Third Installment in the Babylon Rising Series.......2007-01-25
The third book in Tim LaHaye's Babylon Rising series once again pits biblical archeologist Michael Murphy against the indefatigably evil Talon and the mysterious group of would-be world dominators known only as "The Seven." In book one, Murphy went in search of the golden head of King Nebuchadnezzar's famous statue and Moses' bronze serpent; book two found Murphy in Turkey searching for and ultimately finding Noah's Ark. In The Europa Conspiracy, Murphy is at it again, this time looking for the remains of King Belshazzar's writing on the wall.
The book, like the previous two, opens with Michael Murphy battling the sinister intent of his mischievous benefactor, Methuselah. When he finds the clue Methuselah left for him, Murphy instantly knows that his goal is the handwriting on the wall, and he makes plans to return to Babylon. Accompanying him is the beautiful Isis, with whom Murphy falls in love during the course of the story, the fact that she is not a Christian notwithstanding.
Murphy does in fact uncover the location of the handwriting on the wall with no difficulty whatsoever, since Methuselah tells him exactly where it is. Along the way, Murphy helps in thwarting a terrorist plot to blow up the Washington Bridge in New York and learns that the Antichrist has been born and is waiting to assume control of a yet-to-be-established one-world government as soon as the United Nations is relocated to Babylon.
Like its predecessors, The Europa Conspiracy is implausible, unengaging, and largely uncompelling. The characters are as shallow as ever, dialog reads like a high-school play, and the central premise teeters precariously on the border between merely unbelievable and patently ridiculous. The idea that an Illuminati-like group of seven anonymous yet nearly omnipotent individuals is directly responsible for everything from the state of the U.S. economy to the price of Middle Eastern oil to the decline of American morality is absurd.
One thing writer Bob Phillips does fairly well is action scenes, and the highlight of the book is an extended sequence in which Michael Murphy becomes aware of and assists in the dismantling of a terrorist plot to destroy New York's Washington Bridge. The book's cliffhanger of a closing scene is also fairly well done, except for the unforgivable editorial blunder of having a character switch back and forth between having been killed in a catastrophic earthquake and being safe and on the way home to his family. Periodic narrative flashbacks to the prophet Daniel's experiences in ancient Babylon are also of some interest.
Christian content is plentiful, though rather pedantic. The unexpected death of one of the key characters from a previous book adds a small amount of emotional drama (though not nearly as much as book 1, when Michael Murphy's wife was killed in a church bombing). The title refers to the plan of "The Seven" for the European Union (according to legend, the continent of Europe was named after Zeus's lover Europa) to take over the world.
Though it will likely be a best-seller based on name recognition alone, this book is a sophomoric followup to two mediocre prequels. It falls far short of the intrigue of the Left Behind series (LaHaye's phenomenally successful venture with writer Jerry Jenkins) and its quasi-juvenile writing and utter lack of careful editing or proofreading should ensure a quick trip to Bantam's backlist.
Darryl's Review.......2006-11-07
Another fine book in a good series. Quick read, good historical accuracy. Good plot and characters.
You might want to skip this one..........2006-10-06
Europa Conspiracy is, first and foremost, nowhere near as fast-paced as Babylon Rising or even The Secret on Ararat. I was terminally disappointed with this installment from beginning to end. Even as a Christian woman, I found it too preachy, and I felt as if Tim LaHaye "dumbed down" a lot of the Biblical and historical references/explanations in hopes of attracting a more diverse age group. It also seemed as if he was including very adolescent-sounding dialogue and these bad explanations as fillers to make the book longer, while leaving out the action that caught my attention in the first two books of the series. At this point, the only reason I will continue reading this series is because of the cliffhanger at the end of the novel.
A BOOK THAT OFFERS ALL WE NEED.......2006-08-26
Europa Conspiracy has the ability to entertain while instigating reflexion about the most disturbing realities of today's world.
Its references to the Bible urge us to search God's word as our ultimate guidance.

Book Description
Introduced in this book is Englebert Dollfuss, the Austrian hero who plotted a course for Austria against Nazism, against Socialism, and against unbridled capitalism until his assassination by the Nazis in 1934. This is the story of the Austrian chancellor who attempted to act as a moral force to bring a divided, bankrupt, and bitter Europe to its senses. It details how he persuaded people of many different political persuasions to follow and support that policy, not through elegant speeches, worthless programs, and empty promises, but through common sense, good humor, overpowering honesty, and tremendous personal sacrifice.
Customer Reviews:
Learn About One of History's Great Men.......2006-12-11
Dollfuss comes through in this biography as one of the few true leaders in modern history. His desire to lead his nation seems motivated by love of his people and their traditions, not by egotism.
The author, an advisor to Dollfuss, explains how the Chancellor's peasant backround gave him a respect for Autrian tradition, shaped his belief in the concept of the Christian Corporate State and led him to oppose both Marxism and National Socialism . The author uses many quotes from Dollfuss' own speeches and letters to explain the principles of the Christian state. The Author also shows the term, "clerical fascist", often ascribed to Dollfuss, to be a misnomer.
Altogether a perfect introduction to one of history's great men and to a political system largely forgotten but hardly irrelevant.

Book Description
Nawal El Saadawi has been pilloried, censored, imprisoned and exiled for her refusal to accept the oppressions imposed on women by gender and class. In her life and in her writings, this struggle against sexual discrimination has always been linked to a struggle against all forms of oppression: religious, racial, colonial and neo-colonial. In 1969, she published her first work of non-fiction, Women and Sex ; in 1972, her writings and her struggles led to her dismissal from her job. From then on there was no respite; imprisonment under Sadat in 1981 was the culmination of the long war she had fought for Egyptian women's social and intellectual freedom. A Daughter of Isis is the autobiography of this extraordinary woman.
Customer Reviews:
Contrived, pretentious and so very badly translated.......2001-01-18
This is a strange book. It was obviously written in Arabic originally but aiming almost exclusively at a western readership. The translator, El Sadawi's husband had the role of translating the book and increasing its appeal for a western audience.
I found the first third of the book dreadfully boring and repetitive. The first page was gripping then it went downhill fast. El Sadawi, an ultra leftist spends most of the first third of the book trying to establish working class connections. That despite of her family's land owning origins and indeed her grandfather's aristocratic heritage and even a title too!
El Sadawi along with Doris Lansing (on the back cover) try to have us believe that she came from such a background that would have married her off at the age of 10 and discriminated so much against her. While I don't for a minute suggest that gender discrimination is not a serious issue in Egypt, then and now. The story as told by El Sadawi appears so contrived, exaggerated and mostly made up. It is hard to believe a father so liberal as to send his daughter to middle and high school away in Cairo in the big city, a father who was the inspector of education, who washed dishes (in 1930's Egypt) from a quasi-aristocratic family considering marrying off his daughter to the "wrong" class let alone at that age. Even if that was the case, what happened to him to turn him into the modern father who then goes on to send his daughter to Cairo alone!
The book gets less painful to read as things move on a bit and Nawal goes to Cairo. Here we have an ungrateful bitter human being who has nothing good to say about anyone. The self-righteousness is nauseating. Her rich aunt's house was no good, her poor uncle's house was also no good, and the schools were no good. You get the impression of the whole world actually trying to help Nawal, yet she has not a good word to say about any of it.
There are occasional parts of the book that are really interesting, very human and / or down right funny. The life of the various aunts in Cairo and their fates was well written and moving.
The treatment of religion was very superficial. El sadawi lashed out on Christianity and Judaism, but saved most of her venom for Islam. El Sadawi presents mostly interpretations of her poorly educated paternal grand mother as the definition of Islam then proceeds to attack them. In doing so, one never really understand her views as a mature person, but only senses her anger at the religion. Parts of the Quran quoted in the book were so badly translated and the interpretation was so poor and narrow to almost feel like a propaganda rag.
The pretensions continue all the way through the book. We are expected to sympathize with the El Sadawi's family following their move to Cairo. Here we have a family of nine kids with her attending the expensive medical school in the middle of World War II and complaining about her diet of daily meat sandwiches!!! And throwing them away! Yet poor family is being discriminated against because of the father being very clean and above politics. And in 1943, right in the middle of Hitler's atrocities, her only thought towards the Jews is hate! What a shame!
This book is doubly irritating because of the huge amount of mistakes, editorial inconsistencies and very intrusive translation. The book was obviously written in Classical Arabic, but Egyptian Arabic was used in quoted dialogue. The translator, revealing more lofty origins, felt the need to apologize for the use Egyptian Arabic, the sopken language of Egyptians, and to explain the origin of the various Egyptian words. Also the translator felt the need to translate place names right in the middle of the text such as Koberi Al Lemon, being Lemon Bridge, he could have used either. Whenever it got to the Quran, the author was really ignorant and offensive, so a chapter in the Quran (Yassin's) he dismissively says it is a part that is meant to chase the evil away, rather than what it is.
The translator also confuses us greatly with inconsistencies, we have Hegaz, the area where Mecca is and we also have setti el hajja! We have "el" for "the" in the author's name and sometimes in other parts of the book, but he often opts for the more Classical Arabic sounding "al". We have the feast after Ramadan defined as the Sacrifice feast.
There is no doubt that the author and the translator anger at the circumstances that led them into exile away from Egypt largely colored the book. It is a shame that she was unable to stay safely in Egypt holding and defending her views, albeit misguided. It is ironic though that her host, Duke University, didn't escape attack even though it was a minor attack against its namesake.
I was so pleased to get to the end of the book so I can start reading something else. Finally! Thankfully the next book was Alan Lightman's Diagnosis so I now enjoy reading again!
The great fighter:.......2000-12-20
Dr. Nawal ElSaadawi is an outstanding author. The autobiography of her childhood and adolescence is both moving and horrifying. I compared it with the autobiography of Fay Afaf Kanafani [Nadia, Captive of Hope]. Both women grew up in the Middle East and it was very enlightening to see the societal differences of Egypt and Lebanon/Palestine. [If you look further at the autobiography of Edward Said you will see pictured yet another class - Christian Palestinians living in Egypt].The brutality with which Egyptian women were treated by villagers, as opposed to what is seen in Egyptian old films and what we read in Mrs. Kanafani's book. Part seems to be class differences, part society differences, part rural vs urban. The physical brutality described in her book, which we know to be true even today to a lesser degree, is heart-rending. Her fight to give her intelligence a chance to help society in several ways is very important. First as an example to other girls and women, then to her extended family, and lastly as a doctor in villages where doctors are non-existence or scarce. Dr. ElSaadawi must be respected for her resistance as a child to backward standards and to what she accomplished in getting women an equal role in Egyptian society.
I think the book is a must for studies of women's rights. It is very important as it brings to light fearlessly the harsch treatment of women. We should all thank Dr. ElSaadawi for her fearless book.
Thrilling, but skewed..........2000-05-14
A Daughter of Isis is an autobiography that reveals much more than the tumulteous life of its author in a very thrilling and gripping style. The book is a document about the status of women in Egypt as well as all of the Middle East. From an Arab or Islamic point of view, the book is simply shocking and subvertive. But despite its scathing virulence, the book is authentic and is based on a sad reality in its depictions. Virulence, however, skews its objectivity, clearly antagonizing some of its readers, and alienating others. The book is a must read for people with a good background about Egypt and the Arab World. However, the book is not a good introduction because of its heavy polarization toward a frustrated feministic diatribe against a culture. It is important to note that the majority of Egyptians would not agree with the author's hostile feministic wholesale denunciation of Egyptian sosiety. Personally, I take issue with the author's approach to culture. Other cultures could be objectionable to us in some of their practices, but they are never totally 'evil'. Good and evil are irrelevant in a genuine critique of a culture, especially of a culture with an identity crisis.

Super Reader.......2007-08-04
The Spy Who Loved Me is very different from the other books, as the story is told from the point of view of a woman, who eventually runs afoul of a couple of gangsters.
A long way into the book Bond turns up and has a confrontation with the crims and gets the girl. With SPECTRE finished, they are still looking for Blofeld.
Surprisingly great novel.......2007-05-15
When I found out that the content of this novel was entirely different from the content of the Moore flick, I decided to read the novel, and boy, am I glad I did. This is a moving, exciting, totally absorbing book, with terrific characterization and surprising tenderness. I couldn't have asked for a better "light" read, and I recommend it to just about anybody.
An Unconventional 007 Story.......2007-03-18
Having recently read Andrew Lycett's excellent biography of 007 creator Ian Fleming, I found rereading "The Spy Who Loved Me," his tenth James Bond novel, a very unconventional story.
James Bond doesn't appear until page 100. The novel is told from the perspective of Vivienne Michel, a Canadian woman traveling across the USA after two devastating relationships. "Viv" is an strong, sympathetic character--considering that her creator was generally the type of cad who broke her heart! She remembers her deflowering (Fleming had lost his virginity the same way) and her career before fleeing to America (like Fleming, she worked for a newspaper).
But she's a tough, resilient woman, just the type of female who would appeal to a secret agent like 007. Drawn into an insurance scam at a remote New England motel and menaced by two repellent thugs, Viv is threatened with rape and murder until a mysterious Englishman gets a flat tire on a nearby road.
"The Spy Who Loved Me" was an interesting experiment in Fleming's writing that didn't pay off for him. He discouraged any reprints and considered destroying all unsold copies. Who knows what other directions and what risks Fleming might have made if "Spy" had succeeded. In fact, when the producers of the Bond films were looking for their next entry in the series, the Fleming estate allowed them to use only the title of this one.
Reading the novel now in 2007, it appealed to me because Viv's painful past relationships and her determination not to be bitter reflect many women I know now--or wish I knew.
It was also fascinating that the unfeeling men in her past resembled the author more than the main characters. Viv was the strong, beautiful woman he wished he had. And James Bond, as usual, was the dashing super stud he wished he was. Just like the rest of us.
Dan read the Spy Who Loved Me.......2007-02-13
I enjoyed the book. However, the end was to open, I would have liked more details about the relationship.
A minor classic. James Bond with a twist!.......2007-01-15
I did not expect to like this novel. It is told in the first person by a woman who encounters James Bond. Not a promising perspective. But actually, this novel works splendidly, and we get an opportunity to get insight into the elusive James Bond character.
Fleming's writing is as crisp as ever in this novel, and if you can forgive a slightly slow start, this piece rewards the reader with what becomes a fast-paced and thoughtful story. I thoroughly enjoyed this one, and once I got into it, I could not put it down until I finished it. Highly recommended.

Book Description
Paolo's plan for August in Orange Grove City is to hire out his little brother to the neighbors. Georgie is six; he needs a manager.
But then the family dog, Rufus, is stolen.
Overnight, Paolo is trying to manage not just Georgie, but their deaf cousin, Billy, who speaks only with his hands; Henry, a strange vacation visitor whom the boys discover living locked in his aunt's attic; and Butter Schwartz, a lonely, half-wild schemer with a paper route. The last two are definite dognapping suspects....
To top it all, a girl with a big-time crush on Paolo won't let him be, day or night, crisis or no crisis. For her, missing Rufus is nothing to snaring Paolo, who has met his match as a manager.
The solution to the mystery of Rufus, the threat of Theresa, and the future must rest in Billy's hands.

Gay love and life just before Stonewall........1998-09-25
This second memoir by Felice Picano follows him as a bored and restless young man to Italy, where he finds both romance and adventure among the denizens of Cinecitta, the famed Italian film studio. The first half of the book chronicles his relationship with Djanko, a director. In the second half, "The Jane Street Girls," Felice has returned to New York, has landed a job at Graphique magazine, and is involved with a man who is old enough to be part of a more closeted, cautious generation.
Of the three memoirs, this one is not *as* compelling, but is still very worthwhile reading, and delivers a blow in its final pages that still has me reeling, wanting to hear more, even though there's not much more that can be said. Worth it for that alone, actually, and makes the title even more meaningful, changing it from possibly self-serving to ironic.
Preceded by Ambidextrous and followed by A House on the Ocean, A House on the Bay.
