Best teaching book I've read in years.......2001-02-06

The book in my oppinion is well organized and easily understood by someone like me who has had no or very little experience with internet searching concerning anything, let alone healthcare. I'm not nor ever have I been much of a reader so for me to keep reading a book its got to be informative and entertining and this book has kept my interest.truly Jeane

An Excellent text. Full of useful information on the daily uses of chemistry. Well written, great CD-ROM. Many texts use CD-ROMS, but few are able to place students in a virtual laboratory to the extent that this production does. Very nice graphics, nice problems, and useful tutorials for all aspects of the chemistry these authors are trying to cover.

This is an up-to-date textbook of model theory taking the reader from first definitions to Morley's theorem and the elementary parts of stability theory. Besides standard results such as the compactness and omitting types theorems, it also describes various links with algebra, including the Skolem-Tarski method of quantifier elimination, model completeness, automorphism groups and omega-categoricity, ultraproducts, O-minimality and structures of finite Morley rank. The material on back-and-forth equivalences, interpretations and zero-one laws can serve as an introduction to applications of model theory in computer science. Each chapter finishes with a brief commentary on the literature and suggestions for further reading. This book will benefit graduate students with an interest in model theory.

Hodges has a sharp, witty writing style. It's a model theory book that covers the standard results one would want such a text to cover (plus you can check the ToC yourself). It's a condensed version of his "Model Theory" which is generally compared to Chang and Keisler's of the same title. I haven't read either of these other ones so I can't compare them to "A Shorter Model Theory".

Be warned that many of the examples require at least some understanding of abstract algebra. So if you do just logic and have little to no background in algebra, you might want to pick some up before reading this. But it's not necessary.

The exercises seem well-chosen. There is no answer key. They occur at the end of each subsection of a chapter. There are on average four subsections per chapter, and the exercises require one to apply their knowledge of the subsection or a combination of subsections of the chapter. Sometimes they require going ahead a little, but usually they build on stuff from previous chapters. They vary in difficulty, so you can skip some of them if they prove too challenging. Each chapter also has "Suggested further readings".

The book is not as notation-heavy as some of the others I've quickly glanced at. I liked that. I found that some stuff could've used better or more thorough explanation, at least to someone who is self-studying, or studying in a small group, none of whose members has previously studied model theory at an intermediate level.

I highly recommend it. It's priced well, clear, and stylistically well-written and pleasing to read.

Shorter not simpler.......2005-07-12

This is a cut version of Hodges' _Model Theory_. The content that remains is mostly unaltered. The only significant new material is section 9.5 on Morley's theorem, which was previously in the exercises of section 12.2. Also, the end-of-chapter references and historical notes have been replaced by suggested readings, the phrasing has been tightened here and there, and the harder problems have been cut. From most of the chapters that were cut, key sections were saved and inserted elsewhere, making for a lot of rearranging. It's too bad the big text is so expensive, because a lot of interesting material was cut.

Previous Review Suspect.......2004-11-08

This is a highly regarded text on model theory, which is a branch of mathematical logic. What model theory is NOT is ". . . what is(sic) sounds like: mathematical models (of the physical and mathematical worlds)", which is a quote that appears in an earlier review.

Excellent.......2000-08-07

This textbook is an efficient condensation of Hodges's bulkier and more leisurely "Model Theory". As such, it excludes some of the "fun" topics in the larger book as well as the nice bibliography. On the other hand, it is a truly excellent textbook for model theory and, in fact, for logic (for those with some idea of what *that* is.)

Personally, I would have liked to see the following topics at least mentioned: higher-order languages, typed languages, ultraproducts, game theory. Nevertheless, this book is still the best and clearest textbook for model theory.

Hodges' Model Theory.......2000-04-16

This book and its 1993 expanded version are in the field of Mathematical Logic, and Hodges of London University shows that model theory in particular has had a remarkable variety of applications to other branches of mathematics, including computers (Prolog, undecidability, etc. - see my reviews of Penrose, Ablamowitz et al, etc.), geometry (see my reviews of advanced geometry via Clifford algebras, including Chisholm and geometric physics including Misner et al, and elementary geometry including Schaum's Outlines), topology (see my review of Greene's Elegant Universe which uses string theory and topology and also Carlip's book), algebra (see my Review of Weinberg's Gravitation and Cosmology which uses algebraic, topological, and analytic methods in general relativity, and Nachtmann's book which uses algebra in quantum theory), analysis/advanced calculus (see my review of Clarke, Yu, Nedyaev et al, Zwillinger's books, etc.), and so on. This book is in the Cambridge Encyclopedia of Mathematics and its Applications series, volume 42. Like most books of the Cambridge Encyclopedia series, it is very thorough up to the date of its publication - probably the most thorough book on model theory, which is roughly what is sounds like: mathematical models (of the physical and mathematical worlds). British Universities are among the world's greatest Creative Genius universities in math and physics, and this book is no exception. Most people should hire a reputable consultant or tutor to help them understand and "translate" the book, which will be well worth the effort in almost every field.

Gentlemen, I am not impressed. I understand that Russians worship Pushkin as the be-all and end-all of their literary language, assigning him much the same significance as we do to Shakespeare or Germans, Goethe. If Pushkin is the best they have to offer, they'd better do some serious searching: perhaps a contest for a $10 prize would ferret out something deeper. True, Pushkin is a decent writer--and I recognize that, having a very sketchy command of Russian and not having read his prose in the Russian original, I cannot begin to capture a fair idea of what he actually sounds like--but I was utterly underwhelmed. And I gave the man a fair whirl: I read his complete tales of Belkin (of which, to be fair, The Undertaker was a reasonably funny stint) and a supposedly entertaining novella, The Captain's Daughter. I have been exposed to a wide array of Russian writers--some titanic, some less known, some quite obscure--and I have yet to find cause to jump up and down. Sorry.

The Best of Them All.......2001-11-27

Virtually anybody who prepares a list of the five greatest writers in world history will include at least one Russian on the list. If there is only one, that one should be Pushkin.

Unfortunately, Pushkin is given short shrift outside of his homeland. The reason is not hard to explain - most of his work is poetry, which translates badly. What's worse, even in translation his poetry wouldn't read any better than, say, Lermontov, whereas the difference would be obvious to a Russian, just as the difference between Shakespeare and Marlowe would be to an English speaker.

Pushkin's prose works provide a basis for remedying the situation. His stories are disarmingly simple and readable, just like his poetry. Yet practically every major Russian novelist of the nineteenth century acknowledged his debt to Pushkin as a model and crafter of prose, as well as a source of themes. This includes Gogol, Goncharov, Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky.

My personal favorites are "The Captain's Daughter", "The Moor of Peter the Great", which is about Pushkin's own great grandfather, who was Ethiopian, and most of all "The Queen of Spades", which practically singlehandedly created the genre of stories of the supernatural. Any one of the stories can be done in one sitting (well, maybe one long sitting for a few of them). Do yourself a favor and make the acquaintance of one of the best writers that ever lived.

Pushkin's Genius Never Fails to Give Us Pleasure!.......2001-01-04

Given the crowded field of the 19th century writers of the Russian Empire, Pushkin is not appreciated enough. And it's understandable - with Gogol, Dostoievski, Tolstoy, Turgenev, Goncharov and Chekhov around, Pushkin gets squeezed out. His prose and his plays are wonderful to read even in translation, and if you're lucky enough to be able to read Russian, his poetry is simply unsurpassed among the Slavic poets, even the Polish Mickiewicz and the Ukrainian Shevchenko. Pushkin the poet belongs with Shakespeare, Goethe and Byron. Pushkin's stories are fun to read, and are a good introduction to the big league Russian Empire writers that follow him.

Pushkin is a master of the short story form. His stories are written in the clear, taut, concise form that he has become famous for. The Aiken translation is considered by many Russians to be the best. Especially recommended are the TALES OF BELKIN, The Postmaster. Have fun!
