A mixed verdict.......2000-12-09

One really has to give two reviews for this book. As a chronicle of fieldwork, it rates a 4. These folks had to face some of the most difficult excavating imaginable - tunneling through hard rock often being pounded by surf!

Unfortunately, they give us very little on their thoughts about the lives of the dinosaurs they found other than that their star hypsilophodont probably had unusually acute vision, and fail in that respect where "Digging Dinosaurs" and "Dinosaurs of the Flaming Cliffs" succeed so wonderfully. One gets the impression that they rushed this book out before fully completing their research, which is a shame because this could have been a very good book indeed if there had been a bit more about the dinosaurs themselves. For fans of dino behavior this really is only a 2.

Excellent Read.......2007-08-07

Pearl has done it once again. This was truly a page turner. It contains a little bit of romance, suspense, imagination and a dose of reality. I wish she didnt take so long in between each book. Great job.

Lady Sings The Baby Brother's Blues.......2007-07-28

Baby Brothers Blues is a 333 page fiction book with 66 chapters including an epilogue. The book has several animated characters and plots that eventually cross one another like latitudes and parallel lines cross on a globe. Blue the modern day Black Robin Hood for society, General the right hand man of Blue, Baby Brother the handsome DL army thug deserter, Brandi the young naive stripper are just a few memorable characters. I think Pearl Cleage did a good job in developing the characters and tying in the plot. If you have a busy schedule this book will probably take you a week to read, but it is worth

WOW!!!
I found this book to be captivating. What a wonderful storyteller. I think this is my favorite Cleage book so far. There are several characters in the book, all carefully thought out and explained with brilliance and candor. The thing that makes the book so powerful for me is the use of everyday world challenges mixed with the social and economical changes of society. There is no subject to sensitive to be discussed by Cleage and her elegent writing leaves you utterly speechless and she spins a tale that is realistic and mystic in the same space.

The end wrapped everything up too quickly.......2007-04-13

I enjoyed reading this book and following all the characters. Initially they are introduced and eventually you find out that they are all connected. The descriptions are very vivid and you can really imagine the characters. The story was interesting and kept me reading.

But at the end of the book I felt like I was watching a show on tv and they were hurrying up to wrap up the plot before the end. There were so many other twists and turns that could have happened, but it was almost as though the writer thought she had written enough and that was it.

This is definitely a book you would get from the library.

Everyone Has Physical Limitations........2005-09-03

God works in mysterious ways but not as mysterious as those of the internet or radio, as you can't see the person behind the voice and email. I wish you could see the beautiful stained glass window on the cover of this library book. It is fantastic. The apostle Paul (formerly called Saul) constanly felt that he was 'weak' and called out to God for guidance. "My strength is shown forth in your weakness." In the methodist church, a preacher called Paul Allen took most of his sermons from Paul's teachings. At a local 'big business' baptist church, he senior pastor Sauer used Paul to prove that the Methodist are deal wrong, but used his teachings instead of those of John the Baptist, as a ranting, out-of-contaol diatribute against the methodists.

Joseph Greer was a dynamic Catholic priest in Massachusetts who often confessed that he, too, felt 'weak.' His was not a weakness of faith or spirit. His body, at the age of 55, was rife with cancer. In his position as parish priest, no problem was too small for his attention and intervention, such as as a parking-lot dispute. A noise problem and ugly artificial owls GSA has over this town is an eyesore and ear-sore, and yet it is too minor to deal with, a "harassment" charge from the director in Nashville who doesn't have to endure the noise pollution he is emiting over this town.

Ordained at the age of 25, his grave illness thirty years later made him spiritually deeper and more intent on serving his parish will all his strength and ability. Even with a bone marrow transplant, his cancer returned. He has to face his own death, as am I, with suffering, humility, and the power of love -- instead of hate. He was an inspiration to all who knew him.

It's Not Just a Sunday Job.......2004-01-07

This book really shows the day-to-day experience of a parish priest and probably applies to any clergy role. Of course, this book's main subject is, in addition, suffering from a terrible form of cancer. As the book portrays, he tries his best to keep going, even through times of debilitating treatment. By the end of the book, he has learned some painful lessons about delegating responsibility, and when to put yourself first. Still, the priest remains a faithful servant, trying to do God's will and trying at the same time to just survive. The book speaks a great deal to the demands on a clergy person's time and what that means for his/her life. Plus this book focusing on a Catholic priest also reminded me of the stresses in the Catholic church of today. (This book, however, was written more than 10 years ago.) For anyone interested in church life, the book illuminates some constant themes--mainly the need of the priest to serve pastoral and theological needs while, at the same time, making sure the boilers in the buildings are working.
