    Book Description

Many countries and regions are actively promoting high technology industries as a means of stimulating the economy. The authors point out that these efforts are not only encouraging economic development, but they also reduce an economy's vulnerability to the negative consequences of world trade. By weaving together the fields of health economics, industrial organization and industrial development, this book describes the benefits of promoting a country's health industry as a way of stimulating its high-technology industrial capacity. The authors illustrate that the development of a country's health industry not only improves the country's health status, but also promotes an industry with relatively stable, high wage employment, creates the potential for exporting goods and services, and produces scientific spillovers that will favorably impact other high-technology industries. Health Policy and High-Tech Industrial Development will be of great interest to health policy analysts, by showing that health policies have broader implications than merely affecting health systems. Health economists should consider the advantages of viewing a country's health system not only as a unique industry that produces both health care and high-technology goods and services, but that it also possess the ability to stimulate development of a broader array of high-technology industries. Development and industrial economists and policymakers will also see the health sector from this different and innovative perspective.

The premise for this book--the reason its lessons are so vital to the vast pool of would-be employees--emulates résumé protocol, in that it's stated succinctly in the first paragraph of the preface. To wit: all employers want to know that you understand what the company does and what the job entails, that you are well prepared for the position and can do the job, that you're motivated to succeed and will be a valuable addition. The résumé is the space in which to communicate convincingly this essential information; doing so is a skill which is eminently learnable, and to that end David Eyler's guide is an excellent, pragmatic teaching resource. He includes 80 real résumés, with analyses of what works and what might be best omitted, and insights into how these résumés could influence prospective employers. All sorts of résumé prototypes and templates are discussed, with model résumés indexed by job category and title so you can focus on the résumés most applicable to your experience and goals.

Résumés don't do the whole job of introducing you, however, so Eyler also discusses cover letters and interviews, as well as the nuances of sending your credentials by fax or e-mail. He delves into special situations (such as establishing second careers, and returning to work after a hiatus), discusses workforce trends, and offers chapters on employee benefits and forced career changes, as well.

When you're looking for work, for whatever reason, you want to be as well prepared as possible so your application has every opportunity of being noticed, and your experience and skills shine in the best light possible. Eyler's guide will help make this happen, and you'll thereby stand the best chance to accomplish the employment goals to which you aspire. --Stephanie Gold

I've read them all and "Resumes That Mean Business" is the best and most concise "How To" book available for those of us who need help in preparing an effective resume. It also provides the reader invaluable insights into the hiring process, personal skills analysis, and the most effective skill development initiatives one should pursue to become competitive in today's rapidly changing job market. It is one of those books that can make the difference for anyone serious about getting a great job -- from the entry level person to a mid-career professional.

"Resumes That Mean Business" doesn't just tell you what to do, it explains how to go about each step in the process to prepare one's self in the most effective, honest and productive way. In short, if you are serious about getting a better job, this book can make it happen -- it worked for me.

      Book Description

Written by medical students who recently passed the Board exams, Advanced Life Support for the USMLE Step 2 is a user-friendly guide to the most efficient study for the USMLE Step 2. The authors have honed in on the highest yield study material--the most heavily tested topics that students should focus their efforts on to earn the most points. Emphasis is on subjects that carry great weight on the exam, but that students would not know they should study, such as medicolegal issues, dermatology, fractures, smoking cessation, preventive medicine, and vitamin deficiencies. Each chapter begins with study hints that spell out what is emphasized on the exam and what is not. The authors also point out pitfalls in answering the exam questions and suggest strategies for guessing well when in doubt. A separate chapter specifically addresses the glossy book, the test booklet that contains questions based on photographs.

I had very little time to study for Step 2 and this book was GOLD. I did also use Crush the Boards for Step 2 which is also excellent. Advanced Life Support has all the crucial little tid bits of info that you need. It could be in a little bit more of a clinical context but with its extremely short length and highly crammable format, it probably shouldn't change a thing. Its definitely a review and if you're learning the stuff for the first time, you should try a different book. BUT, if you have about 2-4 hours to go cover to cover through this book, then get it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Step 2 Review-- Amust have and Read.......2001-10-09

I think that this ("Advanced Life Support for the USMLE Step 2") is an
excellent text for last minute review. It is not intense enough to study
for subject area boards, but is still useful when you don't have enough time
for a more expansive text. I used this and "Prescription for the Boards" as
my study resources and was able to increase my Step 2 score more than 20
points over my Step 1 score.
The pictorial discussions of disease processes is the best memory aid I have
found in texts like this one. I highly recommend this book for anyone about
to take the step. I can't find anything that compares to this book for
      board
review. I give it 5 stars and 2 thumbs up.

This is a really quick way to review what you know or may not remember. If you don't know a subject matter, this book lacks the detail to learn it. It is quick and easy to read, with some cute cartoons to help remember difficult items.

      5 out of 5 stars A DEFINITE "MUST HAVE".......2001-06-05

A great asset for anyone planning to take the step2 exam. A really quick read..for those final days before the exam. Packed with great 'pearls'. Excellent value for money. Nicely illustrated with cartoons. Needs updating....still talks of two-day paper and pen examination! All in all, I highly recommend it as 'side-dish' to your 'main course' books.

      4 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2000-08-03

Excellent concentrated book of stuff that was all over STEP 2. You should know everything in this book and then work all the problems in the Princeton Review question book to ace this test.

              Book Description

There are four fundamental forces in nature: gravitational, electromagnetic, weak, and strong forces. The last two are sometimes referred to as nuclear forces. It is the main objective of high energy physics to explore these forces, and hopefully unify them into one fundamental theory. This goal has made high energy physics one of the most ambitious, attractive, challenging, and powerful areas of physics, and has attracted experts from other areas including pure and applied mathematics, and computer science. The MRST annual conference brings together senior and junor investigators and provides a friendly and stimulating atmosphere to discuss recent developments in high energy physics. A broad range of topics in high energy physics was covered in this conference, and therefore these proceedings will be very useful to both senior researchers as well as graduate students in high energy physics, nuclear physics, and computational physics, providing most recent ideas, techniques, and directions for future research in this field.

A small Kansas town has turned into a killing ground. Is it a serial killer, a man with the need to destroy?Or is it a darker force, a curse upon the land?Amid golden cornfields, FBI Special Agent Pendergast discovers evil in the blood of America's heartland.

              Download Description

Agent Pendergast returns to investigate a serial killer in a small town. Heavy with midwest gothic flavor, Medicine Creek, Kansas, has been dying for the last century: the primary occupation is still farming; Main Street is a two-block stretch of bleak and dusty businesses; the nearest mall is 200 miles away. Then, a series of grisly murders with the bodies displayed in peculiar tableaus shocks the tiny town. Believing they'd know if a stranger had passed through, the locals lock their doors and look more carefully at their neighbors. Pendergast arrives with his refined New Orleans accent, big city ways, and meals shipped in from Zabar's and Balducci's. Taking on a local teenage misfit as his research assistant, Pendergast's investigation takes him into the heart of this town-from its bowling alley to its corn fields to its touristy spelunking caves. From uncovering the geological mysteries of the local caves, to the remnants of a Prohibition-era moonshine operation, to the secret of one of western Kansas' greatest enigmas: the Medicine Creek Massacre of 1865, Pendergast's journey leads him to encounter a decayed and twisted evil in the soul of a four-generation Kansas family.

4 out of 5 stars Freaky, freaky bad guy.......2007-09-24

Ahh, so this is Pendergast's idea of a vacation. Scary and impossible to predict, Still Life with Crows will keep you far, far away from the corn fields of the midwest for life. The vivid imagery will haunt you for days afterward.

              Definately worth the read.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining book... but not Preston & Child's best.......2007-09-19

If you are already a fan of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, then you will like this book, which is another one featuring the popular character of Agent Pendergast.

I personally did not prefer it as much as others because no other recurring characters (Laura Hayward, Constance, Nora Kelly, Smithback, Nora Green, etc) appear, and it is a standalone book. The character of Corrie acts as a pretty entertaining sidekick and interesting character, though I would be surprised to see her reappear in another novel of theirs.

This book also one of their most gruesome in my opinion.

If you are just starting to read Preston & Child, I would not start here. Maybe try Cabinet of Curiosities, which I think is one of their best books.

              4 out of 5 stars Great premise...........2007-09-03

...some great characters (too bad Corrie seems to have vanished from the series), but a disappointing resolution. In some ways this now seems like a typically uneven Preston-Child book. I think most of their subsequent books focusing on their brilliantly original and fun character Agent Pendergast have similiar problems, including very prominently disappointing, ridiculous plot twists and conclusion. Also, Pendergast's eccentricities are often just too broad and over-the-top. The scene in this book where he insists on painstakingly making steak tartare at a local diner while the local yokels look on, shocked and awed, is grossly affected and insulting. The guy is supposed to be a g-- d----- FBI agent and he is acting like a cross between Hercule Poirot and Julia Child. His supposedly innovative meditation/ visualization technique is also a bit on the ridiculous and pretentious side, and unfortunately becomes more prominent in later books in the series. I could do without his encyclopedic knowledge of everything related to art, science, and literature, for that matter, as well. At least they dropped his public addiction to steak tartare, though.

              4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2007-08-31

The beginning is a little slow but it gets going towards the end. I really like the hints it gives to some of the other books.

5 out of 5 stars A little different Pendergast novel.......2007-07-19

I have now read all of Preston and Child's Aloysius Pendergast novels. I read them in order except for "Still Life With Crows." In hindsight, I would highly recommend reading them in order, since the characters from earlier books keep popping up in later ones. "Still Life with Crows," however, is an exception. None of the previous characters are in this book, with the exception of Wren, a librarian who sometimes helps Pendergast, and his role is very minor.

Supposedly, Pendergast is "on vacation" in rural Kansas, but readers know that he follows gruesome murders, especially serial killers. As usual, Pendergast is almost done in by the killer before he saves the day (actually, another character saves the day, but that would be spoiling it to say any more). Some pretty good characters, especially the teenage girl Corrie who helps Pendergast despite her being the town's outcast rebellious kid.

So if you've loved other Pendergast novels in the series, you'll like this one. It wasn't my favorite of the series, but it was almost as good as my favorites.

The correct order of the series:

              Relic
              Reliquary
              Still Life With Crows
              Cabinet of Curiosities
              Brimstone
              Dance of Death
              Book of the Dead

The last three are a trilogy, so buy them all at once, because you won't sleep until you've finished them all!

                          Book Description

This biography of Joseph Henry Lumpkin (1799-1867) details the life and work of the man whose senior judgeship on Georgia's Supreme Court spanned more than twenty years and included service as its first Chief Justice. Paul Hicks portrays Lumpkin as both a civic-minded professional and an evangelical Presbyterian reformer. Exploring Lumpkin's important contributions to the institutional development of the Georgia Supreme Court, Hicks discusses Lumpkin's opinions in cases ranging in concern from family conflicts to slavery. He also shows how Lumpkin cleared a way through the thicket of antiquated laws that threatened to strangle the growth of corporate banking and business in Georgia. Treated in depth as well are the evolution of his views on slavery and secession and his involvement in social and economic reform, including temperance, education, African American colonization, and industrialization.

Hicks also covers Lumpkin's undergraduate days at the University of Georgia and Princeton, his experiences as a state legislator and successful lawyer, and his family life. Among the family members portrayed are Lumpkin's older brother, Wilson, a two-term governor of Georgia; and Lumpkin's son-in-law, Thomas R. R. Cobb, cofounder with Lumpkin of the University of Georgia Law School.

Joseph Henry Lumpkin played an important role in the public life of Georgia during the formative era of American law and the age of sectionalism. Here is a full and compelling portrait of Lumpkin as an individual of both intellect and passion, on and off the bench.

                              Book Description

This collection of seventeen fascinating biographies, produced by the Mississippi Women's History Project, is an important step toward gaining the state's women their due place in its written record. The women whose absorbing life stories are told here range from Felicité Girodeau of old Natchez, who was both a person of color and a slaveholder, to Vera Mae Pigee, who "mothered" the civil rights movement in the Mississippi Delta. Some of the women are well known, others were prominent in their time but have since faded into obscurity, and a few have never received the attention they deserve.

Readers may already know such figures as writer and photographer Eudora Welty, civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer, and poet and educator Margaret Walker Alexander. Others are probably less familiar: the microbiologist Elizabeth Lee Hazen, the black businesswoman and civic leader Sadye Wier, the flapper feminist Minnie Brewer, or the jurist Burnita Shelton Matthews. All the featured women, whether suffrage pioneers, champions for higher education for women, or luminaries in art and literature, shared similar experiences in their struggles for success. From Winnie Davis, daughter of the Confederacy's president, to Hazel Brannon Smith, the journalist and antilynching crusader, they had in common the pains and privileges that were part of womanhood in their times.

As multifaceted as the state they helped to build, the women portrayed in this engaging volume will interest and inspire Mississippians of all ages. Scholars will find here a valuable resource that adds nuance and texture to southern and women's history.
