Health Policy And High-tech Industrial Development: Learning From Innovation In The Health Industry
Manufacturer: Edward Elgar Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1843767570 |
Book Description
Many countries and regions are actively promoting high technology industries as a means of stimulating the economy. The authors point out that these efforts are not only encouraging economic development, but they also reduce an economy's vulnerability to the negative consequences of world trade. By weaving together the fields of health economics, industrial organization and industrial development, this book describes the benefits of promoting a country's health industry as a way of stimulating its high-technology industrial capacity. The authors illustrate that the development of a country's health industry not only improves the country's health status, but also promotes an industry with relatively stable, high wage employment, creates the potential for exporting goods and services, and produces scientific spillovers that will favorably impact other high-technology industries. Health Policy and High-Tech Industrial Development will be of great interest to health policy analysts, by showing that health policies have broader implications than merely affecting health systems. Health economists should consider the advantages of viewing a country's health system not only as a unique industry that produces both health care and high-technology goods and services, but that it also possess the ability to stimulate development of a broader array of high-technology industries. Development and industrial economists and policymakers will also see the health sector from this different and innovative perspective.

Resumes That Mean Business: Third Edition (Resumes That Mean Business)
David R. Eyler Manufacturer: Random House Reference ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0375704698 Release Date: 1999-04-06 |

The premise for this book--the reason its lessons are so vital to the vast pool of would-be employees--emulates résumé protocol, in that it's stated succinctly in the first paragraph of the preface. To wit: all employers want to know that you understand what the company does and what the job entails, that you are well prepared for the position and can do the job, that you're motivated to succeed and will be a valuable addition. The résumé is the space in which to communicate convincingly this essential information; doing so is a skill which is eminently learnable, and to that end David Eyler's guide is an excellent, pragmatic teaching resource. He includes 80 real résumés, with analyses of what works and what might be best omitted, and insights into how these résumés could influence prospective employers. All sorts of résumé prototypes and templates are discussed, with model résumés indexed by job category and title so you can focus on the résumés most applicable to your experience and goals.Résumés don't do the whole job of introducing you, however, so Eyler also discusses cover letters and interviews, as well as the nuances of sending your credentials by fax or e-mail. He delves into special situations (such as establishing second careers, and returning to work after a hiatus), discusses workforce trends, and offers chapters on employee benefits and forced career changes, as well.
When you're looking for work, for whatever reason, you want to be as well prepared as possible so your application has every opportunity of being noticed, and your experience and skills shine in the best light possible. Eyler's guide will help make this happen, and you'll thereby stand the best chance to accomplish the employment goals to which you aspire. --Stephanie Gold

High Energy Physics: The 25th Annual Montreal-Rochester-Syracuse-Toronto Conference on High Energy Physics, MRST 2003: A Tribute to Joe Schechter (AIP Conference Proceedings / High Energy Physics)
Manufacturer: American Institute of Physics ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0735401616 |
Book Description
There are four fundamental forces in nature: gravitational, electromagnetic, weak, and strong forces. The last two are sometimes referred to as nuclear forces. It is the main objective of high energy physics to explore these forces, and hopefully unify them into one fundamental theory. This goal has made high energy physics one of the most ambitious, attractive, challenging, and powerful areas of physics, and has attracted experts from other areas including pure and applied mathematics, and computer science. The MRST annual conference brings together senior and junor investigators and provides a friendly and stimulating atmosphere to discuss recent developments in high energy physics. A broad range of topics in high energy physics was covered in this conference, and therefore these proceedings will be very useful to both senior researchers as well as graduate students in high energy physics, nuclear physics, and computational physics, providing most recent ideas, techniques, and directions for future research in this field.

A small Kansas town has turned into a killing ground. Is it a serial killer, a man with the need to destroy?Or is it a darker force, a curse upon the land?Amid golden cornfields, FBI Special Agent Pendergast discovers evil in the blood of America's heartland.Download Description
Agent Pendergast returns to investigate a serial killer in a small town. Heavy with midwest gothic flavor, Medicine Creek, Kansas, has been dying for the last century: the primary occupation is still farming; Main Street is a two-block stretch of bleak and dusty businesses; the nearest mall is 200 miles away. Then, a series of grisly murders with the bodies displayed in peculiar tableaus shocks the tiny town. Believing they'd know if a stranger had passed through, the locals lock their doors and look more carefully at their neighbors. Pendergast arrives with his refined New Orleans accent, big city ways, and meals shipped in from Zabar's and Balducci's. Taking on a local teenage misfit as his research assistant, Pendergast's investigation takes him into the heart of this town-from its bowling alley to its corn fields to its touristy spelunking caves. From uncovering the geological mysteries of the local caves, to the remnants of a Prohibition-era moonshine operation, to the secret of one of western Kansas' greatest enigmas: the Medicine Creek Massacre of 1865, Pendergast's journey leads him to encounter a decayed and twisted evil in the soul of a four-generation Kansas family.Customer Reviews:

Joseph Henry Lumpkin: Georgia's First Chief Justice
Paul DeForest Hicks Manufacturer: University of Georgia Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0820323659 |
Book Description
This biography of Joseph Henry Lumpkin (1799-1867) details the life and work of the man whose senior judgeship on Georgia's Supreme Court spanned more than twenty years and included service as its first Chief Justice. Paul Hicks portrays Lumpkin as both a civic-minded professional and an evangelical Presbyterian reformer. Exploring Lumpkin's important contributions to the institutional development of the Georgia Supreme Court, Hicks discusses Lumpkin's opinions in cases ranging in concern from family conflicts to slavery. He also shows how Lumpkin cleared a way through the thicket of antiquated laws that threatened to strangle the growth of corporate banking and business in Georgia. Treated in depth as well are the evolution of his views on slavery and secession and his involvement in social and economic reform, including temperance, education, African American colonization, and industrialization.Hicks also covers Lumpkin's undergraduate days at the University of Georgia and Princeton, his experiences as a state legislator and successful lawyer, and his family life. Among the family members portrayed are Lumpkin's older brother, Wilson, a two-term governor of Georgia; and Lumpkin's son-in-law, Thomas R. R. Cobb, cofounder with Lumpkin of the University of Georgia Law School.
Joseph Henry Lumpkin played an important role in the public life of Georgia during the formative era of American law and the age of sectionalism. Here is a full and compelling portrait of Lumpkin as an individual of both intellect and passion, on and off the bench.

Mississippi Women: Their Histories, Their Lives
Manufacturer: University of Georgia Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0820325031 |
Book Description
This collection of seventeen fascinating biographies, produced by the Mississippi Women's History Project, is an important step toward gaining the state's women their due place in its written record. The women whose absorbing life stories are told here range from Felicité Girodeau of old Natchez, who was both a person of color and a slaveholder, to Vera Mae Pigee, who "mothered" the civil rights movement in the Mississippi Delta. Some of the women are well known, others were prominent in their time but have since faded into obscurity, and a few have never received the attention they deserve.Readers may already know such figures as writer and photographer Eudora Welty, civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer, and poet and educator Margaret Walker Alexander. Others are probably less familiar: the microbiologist Elizabeth Lee Hazen, the black businesswoman and civic leader Sadye Wier, the flapper feminist Minnie Brewer, or the jurist Burnita Shelton Matthews. All the featured women, whether suffrage pioneers, champions for higher education for women, or luminaries in art and literature, shared similar experiences in their struggles for success. From Winnie Davis, daughter of the Confederacy's president, to Hazel Brannon Smith, the journalist and antilynching crusader, they had in common the pains and privileges that were part of womanhood in their times.
As multifaceted as the state they helped to build, the women portrayed in this engaging volume will interest and inspire Mississippians of all ages. Scholars will find here a valuable resource that adds nuance and texture to southern and women's history.
