Book Description
This inspiring story tells how Habitat International's dramatic success can be attributed to their novel hiring practice in which three out of every four workers has a physical or mental disability or both. Ranging from employees with schizophrenia driving forklifts alongside colleagues with Down's syndrome, autism, and cerebral palsy, to recovering alcoholics, and deaf people cutting floor runners next to homeless workers filling orders for Sears, The Home Depot, and Lowes, Habitat's work force exemplifies how alternative hiring practices can be profitable. This thought-provoking text explores the initial and ongoing challenges of a company with disabled employees, describes how Habitat became a role model for companies across the United States and shares individual success stories about the workers, along with advice and concrete tips for entrepreneurs who want to set up a disability-hiring program.
Customer Reviews:
must read.......2005-09-29
As an educator I found this book to be a "must read" for students of all
ages. The reader gains a better understanding of what positive business
gains can be made when hiring within the disabled community. Further, the
author writes the book in a manner that allows you to know the "heroes"
within the company and gain a personal appreciation for what each one brings
to the work place, ultimately allowing a better understanding of the talents
a truly diverse workforce brings to enhancing the business and the lives of
each individual.
I hope this is only the beginning of Nancy Henderson Wurst's career in book
writing. Her ability to help the reader know and understand the lives of
the people she writes about is a true gift to the reader. This book is for
everyone willing to learn.
Fun and easy to read.......2005-08-17
This book inspires people of all abilities to appreciate one another's differences. There are many interesting stories related throughout the book. It's a must read for all organizations.
Miracles Can Happen.......2005-06-09
This book should be read by every C.E.O. who cares about his employees and wants to improve his company profitability; and should be required reading in every H. R. Department and business School. Mr. Morris has shown great courage and vision. He and Ms. Henderson-Wurst deserve to be given as much prime time publicity as possible to showcase the people in their book. I am 53 years old, born with Cerebral Palsy, trained as an Attorney, in London. I have never met an employer, with the vision of Mr Morris.
Able Will Inspire You.......2005-06-09
I am lucky enough to know David Morris personally, he is an inspiration in my life. Nancy Henderson Wurst captures in this book what David brings to the world, and we all need to know that compassion CAN live in the successful business world. I've also been lucky enough to meet some of those who David hired, persons who were "unhirable" by traditional standards. Wow, what a thing it is to see ABLE where others see "disabled". Just imagine what that does for that person. David brings compassion, harmony and ease into the bigtime corporate world and into the lives of everyone around him. Seeing David live his life, run his business and accept others is a major catalyst for the creation of a new business venture I am bringing to the world. Just last night I figured out how to also involve ABLED persons into the mix! It took 2 months of brainstorming but now I get to also try to make a little difference in the world, and I feel great ..thanks to David! No kidding, if you are a business person who has a yearning to also contribute to the world AS you do business then you should read this little book, I bet you WILL find some possibilities in there that will bring beauty to your life ..and to others. Have a good day.
Able will change the way you look at disability foerever.......2005-06-09
I've worked with the disabled for many years and I am in fact able myself after having suffered a broken neck seven years ago.
Nancy Henderson Wurst has captured the essence of compassion and understanding in this population as she introduces you to a man who has totally embraced our differently abled friends to his advantage as well as to their own.
David Morris at great risk and with tremendous courage creates a workforce consisting mainly of disabled people and turns his business into a gold mine.
Hiring people that no one else would have is a story that touches the soul and will enrich, enlighten and change the way you think of these precious souls you once thought DIS - Abled.
Book Description
Ethnic minority groups in the United States suffer and die from disease at rates much higher than the general population. Such groups include African-Americans, Alaska Natives, Native Americans, Hispanics, and Pacific Asian Americans. To understand the nature of the deplorable rates, the health history of the ethnic groups must be understood. This book describes the contents of libraries nationwide which house health and medically related materials on ethnic minority populations. The book covers information about catalogs, books, articles, biographies, and autobiographies, primary source materials, cassette tapes of speeches, video tapes and films, and medical artifacts. The repositories covered are in various stages of cataloguing these materials but indicate an interest in having researchers use the collections. This book is the most comprehensive guide to ethnic medical health materials, their location, state of completion, and the contents of collections.

Book Description
This book contains 17 chapters reviewing our knowledge of the high-velocity clouds (HVCs) as of 2004, bringing this together in one place for the first time. Each of the many different aspects of HVC research is addressed by one of the experts in that subfield. These include a historical overview of HVC research and analyses of the structure and kinematics of HVCs.
Separate chapters address the intermediate-velocity clouds, the Magellanic Stream, and neutral hydrogen HVCs discovered in external galaxies. Reviews are presented of the Ha emission and of optical and UV absorption-line studies, followed by discussions of the hot Galactic Halo and of the interactions between HVCs and their surroundings.
Four chapters summarize the ideas about the origin of the high-velocity gas, with detailed discussions of connections between HVCs and the Galactic Fountain, tidally-stripped material, and remnants of the Milky Way's formation. A chapter outlining what we do not know completes the book.
The book comes at a time when knowledge and understanding of the HVCs are making rapid progress, owing to technological, observational, and theoretical developments.

Book Description
From the Authors' PrefaceThe advancements of technology . . . and chemical engineering have brought about extensive use of a wide range of rheologically complex materials, e.g., polymeric solutions and melts, suspensions, mixtures, oil products, fibre-forming substances, etc. that are characterized by diverse and, every so often, significant deviations from classical Newtonian behavior. Such materials are often used in conditions where the formation of vapor-gas bubbles or two-phase flow regimes is possible. This necessitates deep investigations into the thermo-hydrodynamic problems of liquids with bubbles for the case of a continuous phase with anomalous rheological properties. These conditions are typical of a number of applications and manufacturing processes, e.g., gas removal from polymeric solutions or melts in production of film, chemical fibres and other polymeric materials. . . . The bubbles containing gas or vapor-gas mixtures are often present in polymeric systems. This is because of a number of reasons, e.g., a low wettability of solid surfaces by polymers, the use of volatile solvents, abundance of vapor-gas nuclei, the capture of gas by porous or fibre-like polymeric particles during the polymer dissolution or melting, etc. Spontaneous evacuation of bubbles in polymeric media is usually complicated by a high viscosity of the liquid; therefore two-phase polymeric systems possess a higher sedimentation and aggregation stability than bubble mixtures in low-molecular-weight liquids. One of the main problems in the dynamics of vapor-liquid and gas-liquid systems is the investigation of heat and mass transfer and phase interactions in a liquid with bubbles. The decisive importance of this problem in the analysis of various aspects of the bubbly fluid behavior under diverse conditions, in particular, during a sound wave propagation, has given impetus to numerous researches. The current state of art in the investigation of Newtonian liquids with bubbles is described in voluminous literature. However, these problems have been much less studied for non-Newtonian systems. Behavior of bubbles in polymeric liquids is of great interest because of wide application in chemical technology. . . . In a number of processes connected with the application of polymeric fluids, the dynamic interaction of bubbles with liquid phase plays the key role. Such interaction in the case of a polymeric liquid phase are essentially influenced by the specific properties of macromolecular fluids, including primarily the rheological effects. These effects in the bubble dynamics combined with heat and mass transfer between the bubble content and the ambient liquid constitute the main subject of the analysis presented in this book. Macrokinetics Laboratory, and Full Professor at the Byelorussian Polytechnic Institute, Department of Heat and Power Engineering. Dr. Schulman is recognized as a leading authority in his field of investigation. Extensive Bibliography: A valuable feature of this new book is its extensive international bibliography, with 393 references.
Book Description
From China to Patagonia, award-winning science writer Wayne Grady accompanies a team of paleontologists on several digs. Following the work of Phil Currie, a leading vertebrate paleontologist, the author traces the evolutionary link between dinosaurs and birds. Living in tents and experiencing fieldwork as well as the thrill of discovery firsthand, Grady recounts his journey with a storyteller’s sense of narrative.
Customer Reviews:
Is there life after a species becomes extinct?.......2001-12-14
How are modern birds related to dinosaurs, and is there life after a species becomes extinct? Grady reveals the work and perspectives of paleontologist Phil Currie, who is the leading proponent of the bird-dinosaur theory. Grady does more than review theory: he traveled with Currie in China and experienced the drudgery of fieldwork first hand. An excellent set of insights is presented.
A flight of bones.......2001-10-04
Taking us from Argentina through Alberta to Africa, Grady's admirably mixes his keen sense of observation with vivid descriptive skills. He doesn't simply interview the field workers, but joins the digs, suffering the dust, storms, bugs and labour alongside the scientists. He maintains his sense of humour, however. The result is a highly readable book on the paleontologist's work.
The idea that the dinosaurs escaped extinction 65 million years ago, surviving in the form of birds has been a major point of discussion among scientists during the past few years. We follow Grady on his journey from Patagonia through China to the Alberta badlands in revealing much of the new evidence touching on that question. In the course of that trek he introduces us to a gallery of field researchers dealing with that and other uestions about life in the remote past. Grady's focal point is Canadian paleontologist Phil Currie. Currie, a man who long ago might have escaped the rigors of field research for a quiet laboratory, remains captivated by digs, with their constant surprises and revelations. Grady is gratified to see Currie stay Canadian, increasing attention to the high level of this science being done here. Canada's fossil record has been handled poorly, from indifference by Ottawa to being scavenged by the Americans. We've lost too many good researchers, as Grady points out. His book goes a long way to restoring Canada's place in paleontology.
Grady's account of the work of a field paleontologist is a very human tale. Given that he's a writer rather than a professional bone hunter, this is no mean feat. We are shown the ordeals and triumphs fieldwork provides. It's hard, demanding work, requiring some special skills. Beyond the question of endurance is the ability to focus your mind on what you seek in order that your eyes will isolate it from the surrounding rock. It isn't just luck that turns up fossils.
If there's a shortcoming to this book, it's the lack of further presentation on the issue of dinosaurs becoming birds. While it's gratifying that Grady emphasizes Canadian scientists, he completely overlooks the contribution to the evolutionary links of dinosaurs and birds made by Robert Bakker. Bakker's mentor, John Ostrom, receives a scattering of passing mention, but Bakker's studies are far too important to ignore. Even a footnote would have redeemed this issue. Still, the book is a fine start to understanding the dinosaur-bird issue.

And the Winner Is.......2005-09-27
The Best American Magzine Writing series is edited in 2004 by Susan Orlean, who wrote "The Orchid Thief," which became the movie, "Adaptation, " in which Orlean is played by Meryl Streep. This incredibly bright writer, who came to the New Yorker from an Oregon weekly, has a masterful eye for great writing. Much the way a top museum curator chooses what to add to a collection, editors choose not only what they love for "prize collections" like these, but they, at their best, try to cull a representative sample from an array of styles. Orlean has delivered, as she chooses works from, mostly, the New Yorker, the Atlantic Monthly, and Esquire. Dave Eggers ("Zoetrope: All Story") is a well-known star in the fiction-writing universe, but his work is getting even better, and while he plays with style, his experimentation always serves the story, and his wit is never inappropriate. In a stunning article about a photograph that stunned America and the world, Tom Junod uses the space and freedom-from-rules that magazine articles offer over newspaper journalism to craft an eloquent, unsettling portrait of the photojournalist who snapped the picture of a man jumping from the WTC Tower on Sept. 11. Though these are all cutting-edge, top-tier articles, the role of women in the book, as authors and subjects, is subjugated to well, writing about fluffier topics and topics of (supposed) interest to women. We should expect Esquire and GQ to be writing for men, but it is disturbing that so many of the Magazine Award winners from which she is choosing are men, and are from "men's magazines" (we thank the universe for the Utne Reader and Ms. and Mother Jones). But it's a small quibble, and the controversy will continue, while the writing, meanwhile, should be admired no matter what the author's gender. Read this book every year if you're getting behind on your New Yorker and Atlantic Monthly, to simply read the best in mainstream magazine publishing, culled by top editors. Kudos to whomever chose Orlean this year; she's done a superior job with what she was given.
Writers and Readers...read this book!.......2004-12-03
The introduction alone was reason enough for me to buy this book; it was written by Susan Orlean, one of my favorite writers. I also own the 2002 Best Magazine Writing, which I wholeheartedly recommend (be sure to read "Dr. Daedalus" by Lauren Slater).
This new edition did not disappoint me. I was especially moved by the essay, "The Falling Man" by Tom Junod, which attempts to unveil the mystery behind a man who jumped from the World Trade Center after it began to crumble.
Another one you shouldn't miss is the highly depressing yet mouth-dropping essay "A Sudden Illness" by Laura Hillenbrand. You will appreciate your health tremendously after reading the horror that she experienced.
I'm not particularly interested in reading about Iraq because it brings up too many strong emotions, but despite that "The Killer Elite" (part one) by Evan Wright, is an extremely powerful and important read. It is a very vivid insider look on what it's like to be in the war, and how it affects the soldiers who fight there. It's a glimpse into their behavior and how they are able to do what they do. (Think: Abu Gharib.)
Here's a list of all the 18 essays in the book:
"The Dark Art of Interrogation" by Mark Bowden (about prison torture)
"The Marriage Cure" by Katherine Boo (about Bush's plan to save marriage; it follows two women who take a marriage class)
"The Killer Elite" (Part One) by Evan Wright (about Iraq war and American soldiers; follows one American platoon in Iraq)
"The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" by Tucker Carlson (comic piece; about black leaders, Al Sharpton included, trying to make peace in Africa)
"Housewife Confidential" by Caitlin Flanagan (funny piece; tribute to Erma Bombeck)
"The Stovepipe" by Seymour M. Hersh (about exposing the selective intelligence used by Bush administration to justify Iraq war)
"Columbia's Last Flight" by William Langewiesche (very vivid account of the investigation into the Columbia shuttle crash)
"The David Kelly Affair" by John Cassidy (about a British weapons scientist who commits suicide, after pressure about the Iraq war)
"The Vulgarian in the Choir Loft" by Andrew Corsello (hilarious yet moving piece about finding spiritual nourishment by singing in a church choir)
"The Red Bow" by George Saunders (fiction; about a town that dips into hysteria)
"Newshound" by Calvin Trillin (personality profile of journalist R.W. Apple, an entertaining journalist)
"A Sudden Illness" by Laura Hillenbrand (author of Seabiscuit; about her fight with chronic fatigue syndrome, trying to live with it while writing and maintaining a relationship)
"Wynton's Blues" by David Hajdu (personality profile about Wynton Marsalis, a jazz artist)
"The $20 Theory of the Universe" by Tom Chiarella (hilarious account about how $20 can be used to bribe anyone to do anything)
"My Big Fat Question" by Michael Wolff (about Iraq war, which resulted in a threat from the military)
"The Confessions of Bob Greene" by Bill Zehme (a personal account about being fired from the Chicago Tribune for alleged sexual misconduct)
"The Only Meaning of the Oil-Wet Water" by Dave Eggers (author of "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius"; original piece about love and surfing)
"The Falling Man" by Tom Junod (a "dectective' story about a writer who searches for answers about a particularly man who jumped to his death from World Trade Center tower).
While this book has several politically important pieces, it also contains fun, light-hearted reads as well.
In my opinion, this book perfectly exemplifies the times in which we are living--that which most defines our interests and in what we must be interested.

The House of Percy: Honor, Melancholy, and Imagination in a Southern Family
ASIN: 0820316652 |
Book Description
Drawing from recently declassified top-secret material, as well as revelatory eyewitness accounts, Secret Service records, and Jacqueline Kennedy's personal letters, bestselling biographer Barbara Leaming answers the question: what was it like to be Mrs. John F. Kennedy during the dramatic thousand days of the Kennedy presidency? Brilliantly researched, Leaming's poignant and powerful chronicle illuminates the tumultuous day-to-day life of a woman who entered the White House at age thirty-one, seven years into a complex and troubled marriage, and left at thirty-four after her husband's assassination. Revealing the full story of the interplay of sex and politics in Washington, Mrs. Kennedy will indelibly challenge our vision of this fascinating woman, and bring a new perspective to her crucial role in the Kennedy presidency.
Customer Reviews:
Unique and insightful treatment.......2007-02-19
I have read dozens of books on the Kennedys, and I found this one to be different from most. Aside from the many fascinating details about the day to day lives of the Kennedys in the White House, the author includes her own psychological insights on the marriage, and on Jack and Jackie individually. I found her insights to be extremely perceptive and she explained a lot of things that, before now, have gone unexplained. For example, by all accounts, Jackie was extremely intelligent. Why then does she appear so docile and almost little-girlish when being interviewed? Why did Jackie tolerate her husband's infidelities, and were they in fact in love, or were the Kennedy's just a public act for the benefit of JFK's political career? The answers and insights into these questions, and the details backing them up were fascinating to me, and I think anyone interested in the subject of Jackie Kennedy would enjoy this book.
2.5 stars; buyer beware.......2006-01-13
While Barbara Leaming turned out a decent, albeit tabloidesque, book on Jackie here, there is some halfway decent info. on the Secret Service contained herein, courtesy of an agent I spoke to, as did Seymour Hersh: Larry Newman. Good for the collection (and Newman's remarks).
Vince Palamara

A probing and fascinating biography.......2005-12-05
I am surprised to see so many customer reviews complaining about this book's supposed over emphasis on Mr., rather than Mrs Kennedy. The discussion of Jack's politics, personality, and philandering provide crucial insights into the Kennedy marriage and the choices Jackie made, form her public role as First Lady to her private activities with the children, etc. The research that went into this book is so exhaustive. Using various primary sources, Leaming recreates the Kennedy White House in a second-by-second timeline, bringing the history and the people involved to life in a way that no biography (at least none that I've ever read) has. Far from boring, this account is riveting! I was especially enthralled by the section on the birth and death of Patrick, the Kennedys' third child. The level of detail on these several days' events is amazing. I couldn't put this book down. If you are interested in placing Jackie in a larger historical context, while still getting plenty of details about her personal life, vices, sex appeal and fashion sense, then this bio is a must.
60% Jack, 40% Jackie, and 2.5 Stars.......2005-07-01
Barbara Leaming is clearly a competent biographer. She quotes credible sources, has done extensive study of primary documents, and writes in an informed and objective way about her subjects.
In "Mrs. Kennedy," these biography-writing skills sometimes result in fascinating reading. As an admirer of Jackie's persona, style, and intelligence, I loved learning little-known facts about her emotionally turbulent upbringing and the psychological reasons behind her univerally admired sense of style. The changing thoughts she had about politics, her masterful way of managing cultural and social elements of the White House, and the important diplomatic role she played in her husband's administration were also well-explored.
But after that, there's little left to admire about "Mrs. Kennedy." First of all, Jackie is not the main character that she is advertised to be in the book's title. It almost seemed like the author recounted JFK's actions, failures, and relentless womanizing during the presidency and only then talked about how Jackie reacted to these things.
This was very disappointing, especially to a reader like me who is primarily interested the Kennedy women and not the male side of the family. The intense focus on JFK's life during this period also resulted in horrifically boring sections of the biography that delved far too deeply into events like the Cuban Missile Crisis...events that hardly involved Jackie.
Finally, although JFK's callous womanizing would have definitely affected Jackie's life profoundly, Leaming's habit of constantly mentioning each of the "other" women and describing their affairs became aggravatingly redundant. It made it appear like Leaming had nothing more compelling to say about Jackie herself.
Unless you have a penchant for dull textbooks or want to read everything published about JFK, skip the deceptively titled "Mrs. Kennedy."
Boring.......2004-11-07
If I wanted to read a blow by blow of JFK's most notable presidential descisions, then I would read a book strictly about his presidency. The book is entitled "Mrs. Kennedy..." yet she takes the backburner. I also do not grasp how a book which was supposed to focus less on this particular era in Jackie's life ("America's Queen: The Life of Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis" by Sarah Bradford) gave the most important details. In short, the title of this book is false advertising at its worst and the author might have done well to spend less time trying to read minds. The most repeated themes of this book are contridictory and the writer's voice is projected too loudly.
