Dinosaurs v. Evolution.......2000-12-20
Husted definitely did the background work necessary to write this kind of book. His efforts were not wasted, as he strives to explain the disosaurs in relation to the Christian interpretation of creation. This book provides well-researched and accurate food for thought for those times when YOU ask, "Hey God, what is up with those dinosaurs anyway?"

If you're already familiar with Finn and Sawyer, perhaps this collection of fragments, short stories, and essays--assembled posthumously some few decades ago now, but still fresh--will enhance your sense of Twain's true range. A particular favorite: his essay "The Damned Human Race," wherein he proves, rather convincingly, that an anaconda snake is a higher form of life than an English Earl.
Book Description
"I have told you nothing about man that is not true." You must pardon me if I repeat that remark now and then in these letters; I want you to take seriously the things I am telling you, and I feel that if I were in your place and you in mine, I should need that reminder from time to time, to keep my credulity from flagging.
In Letters from the Earth, Twain presents himself as the Father of History -- reviewing and interpreting events from the Garden of Eden through the Fall and the Flood, translating the papers of Adam and his descendants through the generations. First published fifty years after his death, this eclectic collection is vintage Twain: sharp, witty, imaginative, complex, and wildly funny.
Customer Reviews:
I'm picturing Mark Twain saying, "Hot young blossoms".......2007-10-03
I picked this up solely for the first story, Letters from the Earth, but I ended up reading through the entire book and find I have a new appreciation for Twain's humor and satire. Letters was very entertaining, although the religiously inclined may not find it funny at all. However, I'm not, and I did! Some other portions worth a read include Eve's autobiography (revealing!), an amusing critique of James Fenimore Cooper's writing style, a parody of an etiquette manual, and The Damned Human Race, which demonstrates the 'descent' of man. Twain died in 1910, and this collection of essays and short stories was not published until 1962.
Oh, and Mark Twain referring to "hot young blossoms" amused me to no end. :)
Hilarious.......2007-08-29
I haven't enjoyed a book this much, or laughed this much in a long time.
A Christian endorses "Letters from Earth".......2007-04-28
I am a person who goes to church every Sunday; I like to think that I take my Christian faith seriously; so it may seem ironic that I would give five stars to a book that Mark Twain wrote as a humorous defense of athiesm. "Letters from Earth" is, after all, an attack on Christianity.
Actually, Twain brings out a lot a lot of good points as to some hypocrisies that most Christians and Christian organizations would like to ignore. While reading this book, did not convert me to athiesm. it did open my mind to a more ecumenical and balanced approach.
Of course, the book is also very well written. Mark Twain was one of our greatest American writers and thinkers.

I am truly thrilled with the book, a truly great satirical work. Highly humorus. I purchased a paperback and a 1st Edition of the book thru Amazon and I am happy with both purchases. Thanks
All Time Favourite.......2005-11-29
If you're in the mood for some great humor from the devil himself, this and C.S. Lewis's Screwtape Letters are 2 of my favourite books of all time... these can't be missed, for agnostics, atheists, christians, and bokonons alike. A perfect pair for a rainy afternoon!
Book Description
With the same deadpan mania and genius for dislocation that he brought to his internationally acclaimed novels
A Wild Sheep Chase and
Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, Haruki Murakami makes this collection of stories a determined assault on the normal. A man sees his favorite elephant vanish into thin air; a newlywed couple suffers attacks of hunger that drive them to hold up a McDonald's in the middle of the night; and a young woman discovers that she has become irresistible to a little green monster who burrows up through her backyard.
By turns haunting and hilarious,
The Elephant Vanishes is further proof of Murakami's ability to cross the border between separate realities -- and to come back bearing treasure.
Customer Reviews:
Good.......2007-09-27
Unlike most anthologies of short stories, those by Haruki Murakami are generally very interesting. None of the stories in this collection seemed like filler, chosen just to make sure that there were enough stories to fill a book.
Instead, I reached the end, and felt a bit sad that the ride was over already. Other reviewers will have, I am sure, talked about what the stories are, so I won't bother.
I will just say that you should not expect a normal story arc in any of them. Some have it, but if you expect it going in, you will only be disappointed. Instead, take Murakami by the hand and let him be your guide into his head and his worlds. And simply enjoy the ride.
Buy it, read it, lend it, keep it. It is a good book.

Excellent!.......2007-07-28
Unfortunately short story collections too often seem the bastardized relatives of novels and I so seldom see them appear on any award or reading lists. Murakami's The Elephant Vanishes is a prime example of how perfect and well crafted short stories can be. His stories tend to follow the lives of the upper/middle class and a certain emotional distance or ambiguity and here and there an element will connect one story with a previous story. This perhaps was the first book that I couldn't wait to finish because I was so exhilarated to read it again. My favorite story in the collection (read it even if it's only in passing): "The Second Bakery Attack."
A Fluke?.......2007-07-09
Perhaps it is because this is a compilation of earlier works, or perhaps because the scope of short stories is limiting, I found myself a little disappointed with this book. While I am without a doubt a Murakami fan (I absolutely loved A Wild Sheep Chase; Dance, Dance, Dance; Hardboiled Wonderland; and Kafka on the Shore), I found the stories here lacked the complexity that I have come to enjoy from Murakami. I did enjoy some of the stories here, but, over all, I found the book a little lacking in depth.
Murakami and the absurdities of ordinary life.......2007-03-28
Acclaimed as a novelist, Haruki Murakami also shines as a writer of short stories. Having read his short story collections _After the Quake_ and _Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman_, I decided it was high time I checked out this one. I was not disappointed. In fact, the more of his short stories one reads, the more one begins to appreciate Murakami's skill in this capacity. While his novels are long, dreamlike excursions, his short stories are snapshots of everyday life, peppered with an appropriate amount of the mysterious and unexpected. The terms "absurd" and "surreal" come to mind, but what is so striking about the stories in _The Elephant Vanishes_ is how very real they seem. They cause the reader to reflect on the absurdities and surprises of life itself. Reading Murakami, who wouldn't believe that one day an elephant could vanish suddenly, without explanation?
Some of the highlights of this collection are "The Dancing Dwarf", a story narrated by an employee of an elephant factory, "The Second Bakery Attack", which involves a bizarre holdup, "TV People", a short story found also in a Norton anthology and my personal introduction to Murakami, and the remarkable "The Elephant Vanishes." "The Wind-Up Bird and Tuesday's Women" is also mentionable as it was later expanded into one of his most memorable novels. This book is definitely worth checking out.
Do not buy Lederhosen in Hamburg!.......2006-11-10
I am normally not much inclined towards short stories, but HM may have converted me here.
There are some damned good stories in this volume!
"Sleep" is one of my favourites, a tale about a young wife's and mother's insomnia and hallucinations. Scary.
The little green monster of the story with the same name is a truely tragic figure. You can't but sympathize with it.
Never read a better story on disenchantment than "Lederhosen", though I have my doubt about the claim that the best Lederhosen shop is somewhere near Hamburg. Poetic licence, for sure.
HM is a master of the short story art form. None better.
I fail to see the parallel to Raymond Carver, though Altman's movie Shortcuts is one of my favorite movies, and it is based on Carver short stories.
There is an essential difference between Carver's and HM's short stories: Carver is unerringly going downhill, his stories are always turning to the worst possible outcome. HM is different. You have no sense of direction with him. There is no meaning to the direction of the stories. They are what they are, not upwards or downwards.
The collection shows that the man is versatile. Let me try a typology of HM short stories:
1. fantasy worlds (dancing dwarf)
2. real world with invading fantasy (green monster, TV people, vanishing elephant)
3. real world, fairly extravagant (raging winds, Tuesday's women, perfect girl)
4. real world, fairly real (last lawn, silence, slow boat to China)
5. mindbenders (sleep)

Book Description
Here is a unique look at the dynamics of the interplay between Spain, Mexico, the United States, and the Republic of Texas governments, heavily illustrated with maps, flags, portraits, and political cartoons. This book tells the story of an indomitable woman, Jane Long, who holds a prominent place in Texas history, and the tragedies, triumphs, and conflicts between fellow conspirators Sam Houston and Mirabeau Lamar.
Customer Reviews:
Texas Sinners and Revolutionaries.......2002-04-23
I have read and enjoyed Jack Ramsay's Texas Sinners and Revolutionaries in which he uses the interactions of Jane Long, Sam Houston and Mirabeau Lamar to introduce scores more of early Texans. I was extremely pleased to find the story of my Great Grandfather, Don Erasmo Seguin, included as one of the Tejano's who have so often been left out of the telling of early Texas history. The three people he uses as main characters, Jane Long (a woman who has often been ignored maybe because she was a woman), Sam Houston (the first President of the Republic of Texas, well known as perhaps one of the most famous of all Texans) and Mirabeau Lamar (second President of the Republic of Texas and sometimes known for little more than that) are three people who make me wonder why they left other parts of the United States to enter the conflicts of nineteenth-century Texas. Jane Long who was in her early twenties when she first entered the province could have had an easier life and was before her time by assuming the leadership she took. The story of why Sam Houston, former congressman and ex-governor of Tennessee, left his home state offers an explanation of his well-known personality. Mirabeau Lamar, Georgia ex-senator and son of a wealthy plantation owner, at times must have longed for Georgia. Their ability to unite despite diverse backgrounds provided me an explanation of what it took to create the Republic of Texas when Spain, Mexico and the United States all wanted to claim the land. While each was misunderstood and sometimes maligned by contemporaries, their rebellious conspiracy against Mexico who had a centuries-old claim to Texas is a fascinating story.
Dr. Ramsay's book gave me a unique look at the dynamics of the interplay between Spain, Mexico, the United States, and the Republic of Texas governments. The Index of the book which is illustrated with maps, flags, portraits and political cartoons from national newspapers of that day, makes it an easy and quick reference book to briefly identify many people and events in early Texas.
The book helped me understand Jane Long, an indomitable woman who holds a prominent though little known place in Texas history. The involvement and contributions to the development of Texas by fellow conspirators Jane Long, Sam Houston and Mirabeau Lamar, though early Texas history, is a very modern story.
"I highly recommend Texas Sinners and Revolutionaries, Jane Long and Her Fellow Conspirators to anyone wanting to learn about early Texas and how it came to be the state it is".

Book Description
Straight, gay, macho man, or great big sissy, it's tough to be a guy. Brian Bouldrey is a bona fide sissy - but he was also an Eagle Scout and a member of the Order of the Arrow with a secret Indian name that translates as "Active One."
In "Monster" Bouldrey goes undercover and over the top to stalk machismo in action. At the same time Bouldrey bares his own soul - and imperfections - with disarming, and often hilarious, honesty.
Customer Reviews:
Thoroughly Enjoyable.......2002-01-29
This book is very insightful and thought-provoking, while at the same time managing to be hysterically funny.
The author manages to interject plenty of humor into his self-deprecating and intelligent writing style and in doing so manages to give the reader a fresh perspective and stimulate thought about things that you may think you've already made up your mind about.
Mr. Bouldrey manages to be funny, intelligent and entertaining without resorting to tired schtick and reader manipulation and that's a very good thing.
Laughed so hard I got a nose-bleed.......2001-11-15
Brian Bouldrey speaks for all us Monsters out there, and hits the nail on the head with his stories of the hidden effeminate side of macho. I've been to many rodeos in my life, and his descriptions of the prissy behavior of otherwise he-man bronc and bull riders is perfect!
Monster shows really well how "macho" and "sissy" behavior are just two sides of the same coin. This was a fun book to read, and funny! LOVED the piece on wrestling! And in between the laughs are so many truthful zingers about America's culture of macho. Great book.

"Bouldrey's goofy sense of humor makes you laugh at your own stereotypes of masculinity."-Out
Self-proclaimed sissy Brian Bouldrey goes undercover to investigate Ameri-can machismo, infiltrating everything from a bachelor party to the World Wrestling Federation's RAW. Whether he's hosting a red-meat barbecue where the menu reads like the supporting cast of Crocodile Hunter or deer hunting with his ex-Marine brother who works as a prison guard, Bouldrey's sharp wit and wry autobiographical reflections prove that manly stereotypes yield surprising subtleties and contradictions when viewed up close.
Brian Bouldrey is the author of Love, the Magician, and The Genius of Desire. He edited the anthologies Best American Gay Fiction 1,, 2 and 3; Writing Home; and Traveling Souls. He lives in Chicago
Customer Reviews:
Wasn't What I Hoped.......2006-02-01
There were a couple interesting things in this book, such as his comments when he told his brother he was gay and what another said to him about it also. But other than that I was offended that Bouldrey gently seems to want to tear down ways and rituals and things that are and have been special and important to men throughout many, many generations. He wants to force an 'in your face' acceptance of homosexuality and same sex marriage and because he couldn't keep that opinion out of the book it tainted the subject and slanted it towards a leftish viewpoint. Believe me, machismo still exists despite his wishing certain ways would vanish or become egalitarian.
