            Book Description

The pro- and anti-globalization forces may be logically at odds, but there's little dispute on the inevitability of globalization's forward march. And as Michael Marquardt, Nancy Berger, and Peter Loan explain, the real issue is not stopping or promoting globalization, but rather how to minimize the negative effects of globalization and leverage its powerful, positive effects. Human Resource Development will play a key role in determining this transformation. At no time in history has HRD been more critical in solving urgent economic and social problems faced by a wide array of groups, communities, organizations, and nations. HRD in the Age of Globalization explores the best HRD programs in twelve geographic regions and their impact on culture, the global environment, and other geopolitical and demographic elements. This book not only answers all the questions that exist concerning this burgeoning field-it tells us what questions we should be asking.

Our Worlds provides a rare "insider" look into the universe and planetary science during the current golden age of space exploration. Readers are guided on an exciting voyage of discovery by eight distinguished researchers who explore the universe with cutting edge techniques. From Chief Scientist on NASA's New Millennium Program Ellen Stofan to planetary theorist Bill McKinnon, each writes from a personal point of view, sharing to the fullest the science and emotion found in the most enticing discoveries and the wonders of the solar system. This volume gives readers an up-close view of Mars, Venus, and the Moon; a trip with Halley's Comet; a visit to the moons of Io, Titan, and Triton; and the ability to experience asteroids in their natural element. Coverage details the most current knowledge of the solar system learned from space missions, including Magellan and Galileo. This volume fully captures the breadth of planetary science, from inner to outer worlds, from telescopic to robotic exploration, and provides an unique glimpse into the drives and interests of the men and women behind the science. It is the most encompassing book on the subject to date and will interest anyone who looks at the night sky and wonders what it would feel like to be able to get a closer look. Alan Stern is a planetary scientist and astrophysicist with both observational and theoretical interests. He is the leader of the Southwest Research Institute's Geophysical, Astrophysical, and Planetary Science group located in Boulder, CO.

                  Book Description

Hardbound. This volume is intended to cover the chemistry of one of the most widely studied and important natural products, DNA. Discussed in detail are physicochemical properties of the molecule itself as well as small-molecule natural products that are known to interact with it. Also included are methods to synthesize and manipulate DNA and modified analogues. Twenty chapters are devoted to this overall topic. The first five relate to the structure of DNA; the first focuses on thermodynamics and kinetics of double helix formation; the next two describe triple- and tetra- helical structures formed by DNA; and the last two focus on methods for probing DNA structure (specifically, NMR methods and chemical probing methods, respectively). Chapters 6-12 focus on the chemistry of natural DNA and modified analogues. The first of these addresses nonenzymatic methods for synthesizing DNA, and the next chapter, on methods for attachment of reporter groups t

                    Book Description

Evolution Dissected separates biological evolution into distinct categories and examines the characteristics of each category.

The vast majority of scientific data concerning biological evolution refers to the alteration of existent and functional DNA and pertains to only one of the categories of evolution.

Each of the remaining categories of biological evolution encompasses a unique set of mechanisms for the origin of functionally new information within the DNA molecule. The complexity of the origin of this new information is many, many orders of magnitude greater than the complexity of the alteration of existent information.

Two categories of biological evolution lack unique supporting scientific data and are found to be highly irrational scientific hypotheses.

As you work your way through the pages of Evolution Dissected, you will discover what could be, and what could not be, the basis for biological evolutionary change.

Evolution Dissected is a must-read for all high school and college students, teachers, and the scientific community.

                      Book Description

                      Sequel to Ghost and Kildar.

Former SEAL Michael Harmon (Ghost, Kildar) has a pretty good life. He's settled down in the country of Georgia and built a solid commando-quality militia out of his local retainers. The Keldara have an ancient history of being first-class mountain warriors and all they needed was a few million in modern weapons and training to bring them up to speed. Now, with the Keldara keeping the area safe from Chechen raiders, and the various other terrorists that want Ghost's head on their wall, he can settle back, relax in his harem and drink a few beers. However, a US senator has a problem. A "major financial contributor's" daughter has been kidnapped into the labyrinthian depths of the Balkans sex-slave trade. The US government has been unable to find her and the Senator is _very_ interested in changing that condition. Five million dollars interested. As Ghost and his Keldara warriors blast a gaping hole through the middle of the trade, it quickly becomes apparent that there is more to the mission than a "poor missing waif." There's a rot underneath, and the stench is coming from the very floor of the Capitol. Being at war with Albanian gangs is one thing. Taking on Washington is a different ball game. But Ghost never believed in fighting fair.

This was an even better read than Kildar. I will definitely be recommending this series. Good action all around.

5 out of 5 stars Paladin of Shadows.......2007-07-25

I think John Ringo has a hit here, just as he did with his other series. I enjoy the books and feel that John Ringo doeas a great amount of research during the writing process.

5 out of 5 stars best of the series so far........2007-02-21

Great action with the added flair of the D&S. This book had more action and suspense than the 2nd book, and the depiction of the Eastern slave trade was fascinating, and sad.

3 out of 5 stars Hey Ringo, what are you doing?.......2007-01-27

OK Ghost was great, Kildar was good, but this book is getting stupid. I did read it. It's still got enough killing, weapons, sex, and sluts to keep me happy, but Ringo needs to put the pipe down.

                      4 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it........2007-01-10

In the continuing saga of ex-SEAL Mike Harmon, he gets mixed up in the mid-European sex trade. Serious damage ensues, to the bad guys of course. The places where the action occurs are unusual, and the basic premise is attractive. Who can hate a man who can out-fight and out-bedroom James Bond? Mature readers only.

It's 2006, and Commander Amanda Lee Garrett has just taken charge of a top-secret Stealth-type U.S. Navy warship. She's never been in action, but her learning curve--and our own level of reading excitement--rapidly accelerates when Argentina decides to take back some territory it used to own in Antarctica. Commander Garrett is a wonderfully rich character dropped into a totally plausible dilemma, and James H. Cobb is good at making the intricate details of high-tech weaponry both fascinating and accessible.

The basic idea for this book was pretty good and it is a classic technothriller. However, Cobb shows his ignorance of Navy terminology. For example, he refers to divisions (i.e., Engineering Division) when he should be calling them departments. He has an enlisted aircrewman have the rate of AC1. Sorry, Cobb, but an AC is an Air Traffic Controller. From the job description of the guy, he'd more likely be an AW1 (Aviation Warfare Systems Operator).

Also, Cobb got a bit sloppy with his details. One character is wounded and later dies. When he's wounded, he's described as a Second Class Petty Officer (E5), but when he's recommended for a medal, the recommendation is for a Seaman (E3). The ship's medic is an HM1 (Hospital Corpsman First Class). However, the Captain later calls her Chief. Just lack of attention to detail, but noticeable.

I'm a retired Navy Chief so I know about ships and the Navy. Because of the above and numerous other errors, I could not enjoy this book. Those people who know little or nothing about the Navy and how it operates might get more satisfaction.

                      5 out of 5 stars I am hooked.......2005-10-08

I am not what one would call an avid reader, but I have gotten hooked on the Chooser of the Slain series. Cobb caught my attention with the vivid descriptions compiled in this book. I like the fact that as i sat and read it, I could picture the story as if I were sitting in the middle of the scene. It touched on the life of a military officer in both her professional and personal life. Although there are things that are mentioned in the book that in real life would not happen, it is interesting in this novel how Cobb weaves them in to a story, and we follow Commander Garrett through her trials. The descriptions of the action scenes are some of the best that I have ever read.

5 out of 5 stars An exceptional military adventure!.......2005-09-16

James H. Cobb's Choosers Of The Slain is an exceptional military adventure! The writer's grasp of the technology is excellent, but balanced by an equally superb character development. As I read, I can almost see Cmdr Amanda Lee Garrett standing her post on Cunningham's bridge! I fully recomend this book for any fan of military adventure, or just anyone looking for a good read. This one will grab you, not let go until the last page, and leave you begging for more!

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money.......2005-03-15

While reading this book I couldn't help but remember the work of Tom Clancy. I was asking myself then: -Why I'm reading this horrible book instead of one of his?!

The book has a big amount of mistakes: the ones already mentioned by another reviewer and others I will describe here. It is paradoxically sexist when trying to be gender blind (let's face it you cannot insist over and over again that this woman is such a great officer and keep pointing out that she is a female without being sexist!!), it is racist and all wrong about the argentine people (the author keeps mentioning the machismo of the "Latinos" and how they are so upset that the skipper of the destroyer is a female...so much from country that had a female president in the 70s and has female officers in it's armed forces!)

Some of the military and politic ranks from the argentine forces has been "translated" into something the author thinks his readers (maybe he considers his readers as idiots?) could understand: Capitan de Frigata (Fragata!), General of the Air Force (the argentines has no "generals" in the Air Force: Brigadier), Minister of State (Minister of Foreign Affairs)...
The naval attack planes of Argentina carrying roundels (no, they carry anchors)? The argentine forces acquiring Tornadoes (no, the British would never allow such a transaction!)? The argentines keep insulting the Americans calling them "Nortenos" (Yonis, Yankys, etc. that could be but never "nortenos" or better: norteños with that fancy character "n" with a hat! it just means people from the north and it is used in a fond way to refer to the people from northern Argentina) All these things are just details without importance considering the novel plot:
The destroyer Cunningham is an invincible ship that was able to defeat a wholly new modern argentine Navy and Air Force with just some minor damage and one fatal casualty. When I was a kid I used to play with my toy ships and planes and my ships always behaved as the one depicted in the novel: they could destroy everything!! Whooa!, which is a lot of fun for a 9 years old kid but is a boring reading for an adult.

There is a term in Latin that can describe much of the plot:Deus ex Machina. Let me translate this (since it is in "Latin" and so for sure this is something the author cannot understand at all): this phrase is used for describing cases where an author uses some improbable (and often clumsy) plot device to work his way out of a difficult situation. At the last moment some of the crew members of the american destroyer find a way to cope with the incoming attack, sometimes they just remember they have this super weapon in the ship (spy satellite: we have an anti satellite missile, air attack: we can shoot them down with our stealth helo that is so cool that it can dodge a fighter, etc.) Boring, something like Superman without Kryptonite....

Oh well, at least the author could differentiate between Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires as the capital of Argentina!

                      4 out of 5 stars High-tech Mayhem.......2004-11-10

James Cobb dishes up first rate action in this high-tech naval thriller. As an earlier reviewer mentioned, Cobb's details are sometimes lacking, but overall he does a good job of capturing the flavor of life and combat aboard an ultra-modern warship. For a guy who never served in uniform, Mr. Cobb writes with much better accuracy than I'd expect. As a retired Navy Chief, I was frankly shocked by Captain Garret's romance with her helicopter pilot. As a reader, I found it an interesting flaw in an otherwise strong character. It slowed me down for a little while, but the action drew me right back in.

                              Book Description

From her birth at the palace at Versailles to her death on a South Carolina plantation, Natalie Delage Sumter (1782-1841) lived a life riveted by escape, adventure, grandeur, and hardship—a saga that spanned several tumultuous decades of French history and included her residence on three continents. The godchild of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette and a member of the French nobility, Nathalie de Lage de Volude fled to New York at age eleven at the height of the French Revolution. She lived for eight years in the household of politician Aaron Burr and became a confidante of his daughter, Theodosia. On her return voyage to France, Delage fell in love with Thomas Sumter Jr., a diplomat to France and the son of South Carolina's Revolutionary War "Gamecock." The couple enjoyed a celebrated shipboard romance, and with their subsequent marriage, Natalie Sumter entered the world of the southern planter aristocracy.

A Lady of the High Hills follows the epic events that took Sumter from continent to continent--to Brazil, back to France, and ultimately to plantation life in Stateburg, South Carolina. Thomas Tisdale describes Sumter's adjustment to life in the South Carolina backcountry, her role as the matriarch of the Sumter family, and her constant financial worries despite her husband's vast landholdings. Tisdale also recounts Sumter's efforts to overcome religious and intellectual isolation in Stateburg, including her creation of a lending library, education and religious instruction of the family's slaves, and sponsorship of the Roman Catholic Church in South Carolina.

                                    Book Description

In this elegant and rigorously researched work, Kenneth McNaught details the life, work, and principles of J.S Woodsworth and shows the powerful moral and political force that the pacifist, Methodist thinker exerted on Canadian politics.

Woodsworth first went to the House of Commons in 1922, and became leader of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation at its formation in 1933. A socialist to the end, he exhibited his anti-war convictions to Parliament, when, in 1939, he alone spoke out against joining the war in Europe. Woodsworth's ideas and strong social conscience helped to shape the development of the welfare state in Canada, and have left an intellectual legacy in both socialist and liberal circles.

A Prophet in Politics marks the progress of socialism in Canada, as well as the economic and political conditions in the first half of the twentieth century. McNaught, who died in 1997, is himself an important figure in Canadian history, having fought as a professor of history for academic freedom and having brought the scholarly discussion of national politics into the public sphere. At the time of its original publication, Globe and Mail reviewers called it 'a definitive biography that in drama and organization ranks with the best books about the makers of Canada.' This edition, presented in the 'Reprints in Canadian History' series, includes a new introduction by Allen Mills.

Modern Day Heroes gives positive support for political leaders, military and community people who have defended our freedom abroad and worked to maintain safety at home. This book can be a reference for parents who want to teach their children about our era, an important period in history. It is a good snapshot of modern heroism to build patriotism and unity.

Many times media makes decisions about who is a hero. The title is bestowed in headlines to entice viewers, reader and listeners to stay with the medium. This book asked real people what a hero is to them. In a time when it is easy to feel that people are shallow and uninterested in anything but themselves, you see the depth the American people have. American people have deep souls and do not bestow the title hero without thinking about it. This book will let you know what people in American think. It was very inspirational.

Especially during an election year, it is nice to read a book that reminds us that both Republicans and Democrats have contributed to the greatness of the U.S.A. Modern Day Heroes is a fast-paced read that is told in "story" style through the contributions of top level politicians (I was excited to see one of my state's senators as a contributor to the book). Ultimately, the book (as the title implies) is about heroes and their stories. Some of the stories are about current heroes (our servicemen in Iraq, firefighters, policemen, etc.) and some of the stories are about past heroes (WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, etc.) Again, the thing that is perhaps most refreshing about this book is that it demonstrates that Americans all have something to contribute and it's not simply about being a Republican or Democrat.
