Book Description
To balance the competing goals of reduced infrastructure and enhanced information technology (IT) skills, the Army must manage all its workforces in the IT field. Using Fort Bragg as a test case, this report shows how a linear programming framework helps gauge the impact of decisions that change the IT workforce. With a determination of who can do what in the IT field, the authors conclude that with linear programming the effects of policy changes can be quantified and better understood, various policies can be studied, and the approach can be extended beyond the installation level.

Book Description
This book describes a feasible means of constructing such a reflector, as well as simple, reliable and low-cost structures for television and radio transmissions, debris removal from space and the development of solar sails for interplanetary missions. The aim of this book is thus to provide a comprehensive overview of the research in the technology of such space based structures expanded by centrifugal forces. The most promising concepts and design solutions for different applications are addressed. Particular emphasis is placed on deployment dynamics of space-based structures and their retrieval techniques: the reorientation of expanded film sheets in space, selecting film folding patterns, tethering systems, and deployment mechanisms, and controlling the deployment-retrieval process by space vehicles. Also featured are sections on ground and orbital simulation.

Book Description
Wahhabism, a peculiar interpretation of Islamic doctrine and practice that first arose in mid-eighteenth century Arabia, is sometimes regarded as simply an extreme or uncompromising form of Sunni Islam. This is incorrect, for at the very outset the movement was stigmatized as aberrant by the leading Sunni scholars of the day, because it rejected many of the traditional beliefs and practices of Sunni Islam and declared permissible warfare against all Muslims that disputed Wahhabi teachings. Nor can Wahhabism be regarded as a movement of purification or renewal, as the source of the genuinely revivalist movements that were underway at the time. Not until Saudi oil money was placed at the disposal of its propagandists did Wahhabism find an echo outside the Arabian Peninsula.
The author discusses the rise of Wahhabism at the hands of Muhammad b. `Abd al-Wahhab, a native of Najd in the eastern part of the Arabian peninsula, the doctrines he elaborated to serve as the basis of the Wahhabi sect, and the alliance he concluded with the Saudi family, then rulers of the principality of al-Dir'iya. An early result of this union was a creeping conquest of the Arabian Peninsula, misnamed as jihad; it culminated in the sacking of Taif and the occupation of Mecca in 1803. This first Wahhabi occupation was short-lived but Wahhabism triumphed anew with the foundation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1925. Among the extensions of Wahhabism beyond Arabia must be accounted the perverse and brutal regime of the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Worth reading.......2007-09-25
This book is both informative and well written. I don't think it hurts to learn that not all Islam consists of bin Laden and similar types. It is written (logically enough) from an Islamic perspective, and I don't agree with everything in it, but I'm glad I read it.
Most revealing if you know something of the author........2007-07-21
Hamid Algar does not like Wahhabism. He says so forthrightly in this essay.
His complaints are:
1. Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab was a poor scholar of Islamic jurisprudence, and his writings are few and unoriginal. This is apparently true.
2. Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab turned his back on centuries of Islamic jurisprudence and tradition. This is most definitely true.
3. Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab was prone to declaring Muslims who disagreed with him to be heretics who were no longer truly Muslims (takfir) and therefore fair game to be killed for betraying the true faith. So far, he is three for three.
4. The Saudi regime, which early on offered protection and family alliance through marriage to Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab has -- for all the above reasons as well as a general predisposition to nastiness -- been pretty hard on other Muslims, particularly Sufi and Shi'a. Well, the predisposition to nastiness thing may be a little much coming as it does from Prof. Algar (see below), but the Saudi's are certainly not much on supporting diversity and tolerance either within or without Islam.
5. The Saudi's have gotten away with this by recruiting the support of the infidel powers the UK and the USA. Well, this is an emotional issue and maybe we can understand if Algar drops his standards of evidence and exposition here.
6. The Saudis/Wahhabis are iconoclasts. Wherever they go, they tear down memorials and shrines to great Muslim leaders (including Muhammad himself) and lean very hard on people who worship at them or who pray to those leaders for intercession with Allah. They are fanatical about tawhid (the unity and indivisibility of Allah and the idea that no created thing or person is to be worshipped or venerated). With this one, Algar has hit the nail right on the head!
Finally, Algar -- like many of the rest of us -- has a problem with the enormous oil wealth of the Saudi family and with the amount of influence this buys them through schools, mosques, and other less obvious organizations like the Muslim Student Association in the United States to foster specifically the Wahhabi ideology.
Algar is, in fact, a meticulous scholar and a prolific translator of important Islamic works. What I can learn of him says that he is a British subject who converted to Islam and that he is a "passionate Sufi."
He is also a HUGE fan of the Imam Ruhollah Khomeini and the Iranian revolution.
And before you decide that he is obviously a nice man who is outraged at the brutality and intolerance of the Wahhabis, be aware that he called for attacks on the United States BEFORE 9/11 and that as far back as 1998 he actually spat on a group of Armenian students, called them pigs, expressed his extreme dissatisfaction that the Armenian genocide of 1913 (and thereabouts) had been unsuccessful, and told them that they deserved to be exterminated. Sounds like the Prof. can get a little severe himself when the spirit moves him! One is tempted to conclude that he and the Wahhabis are in full agreement that slaughtering non-Muslims is pretty much OK; it's just that Algar doesn't like the Wahhabi definition of "unbeliever" -- a definition which, unfortunately, appears to include Prof. Algar and others like him.
This book is a decent first-hand glimpse into the partisan warfare (not too strong a term) within Islam. Kind of like a discussion between a Holy Roller and a really ardent Domenican ... except that it has been several centuries now since those two were OK with expressing their disagreements through mass slaughter.
Pretty Good Overview.......2007-06-12
Algar gives a good overview of Wahabism's rise and why it hurts us today. Some of it is very detailed such as the beginning which is almost unreadable behind all the dates and names. I got it for a research paper and it worked out great.
good understanding of Wahhabist thought.......2007-05-17
A good short read for understanging the difference between the Wahhabist sect and the rest of the Islamic world. All the Arabic words and names slow the reader down quite a bit if you don't speak at least some Arabic, but this is unavoidable.
Biased, but informative.......2007-05-07
The subtitle ("A Critical Essay") is misleading. It should be "An Insulting Essay". The author is a Muslim who hates the Wahhabis. His bias is obvious, but just in case you're dense, he admits to not liking them in the last few pages. So it's an honest essay.
According to Algar, Wahhabism is an insufferably self-righteous, intellectually impoversihed, and violence-prone sect that came out of the Arabian wastelands without pedigree or promise. It could never have made an impact on its own (it has nothing of value to offer) and would've died in infancy if it weren't for its alliance with the Saud family and their Western connections (money and weapons first from the British, then the Americans).
Algar hates the Wahhabis for killing Shi'ites, questioning/denying the faith of other Muslims, destroying important architecture, and generally being jerks. The book's main use lies in highlighting points of disagreement among Muslims. In other words, it points to the internal diversity, complexity and richness of Islam. (Or, if you want to put a negative spin on it, you can read it as evidence that Islam has just as bad a history of factional violence and mean-spirited discourse as Christianity does).
It's a quick and relatively easy read. However, there are some 15-20 recurring terms that the ordinary reader might not be familiar with. I knew some (hadith, ulama) from various college courses and other reading, and had to figure others (shirk, tauhid) out as I went along. The book should really have had a glossary. A single page is all it would've taken to make the essay more accessible.

Pleasure expierence to read it.......2006-07-30
Why is it pleasurable to read this book ? Because you have the impression of sitting with former President Nixon having him telling you his experience as a politician, truly revealing, with simple but skilled language, anedoctes of his life and his mind about a lot of topics.
I really enjoyed having this presidential chat with President Nixon and every once in a while I will surely have some other ones by reading some passages of " In the Arena", a memoir narrated not in chronological order, but according to certain matters he deals with.
The Thinking of an intelligent man.......2006-03-11
This books tells you very interesting things about Politics and Life in general. Definitely, Richard Nixon was a very intelligent man.
Something I find fascinating and mysterious is that the most intelligent President of USA has been the only one to be dismissed, the one who obtained one of the most landslide victory of USA's electoral history (1972) and the one who had more enemies in the Press.
Predictably, lacks perspective.......2005-09-06
An autobiographical account is always a dicey proposition, and in order to succeed, the author requires a certain amount of objectivity, as well as superior writing skills. Unfortunately, this displays neither.
I'm not here to bash Nixon politically, but I do have to say that the book comes off as extremely self-serving. Nixon's account of Nixon's life just doesn't come off as honest. I think that when he wrote it, he was still too entrenched in a persona that needed to take public opinion into account. The result is a lot of treacly, ponderous prose that comes off like the presidential equivalent of a Hallmark television special.
The one saving grace of the book is that it gives us many little anecdotes that demonstrate the minutiae of the daily life of a President of the United States, and that is indeed interesting. But other than that, there's no reason to pick this up.
Disappointing - Not a Kiss and Tell Book.......2005-07-06
First of all, I began this book after reading his "No More Viet Nams" which was top notch. Needless to say, I was a bit disappointed with "In The Arena". Nixon covers much about his life in politics and gives us his personal views on life, his wife, family, friends, television, books, and so on. Reading this book was much like listening to your favorite, wise, ol' grandad talking about his life and what he experienced. IF you are not interested in that, don't read this book. You'll be disappointed. Personally, I was more interested in his pointed comments about politics, foreign policies, political leaders, war, and so on but there wasn't enough of that.
Personal and Analytical.......2004-05-04
Since the former president granted my request and sent me a personal autographed copy absolutely free I am biased about this book. I think it is well-written, insightful, personal, and philosophical all in one package. His approach to life was essentially life it to the hilt, have something to show for your existence, hence the title. He was not hesitant to enter "the arena." In fact, his life was lived in the arena. President Nixon was both a thinker and doer.
While he lived adventurously on two levels, the mental and physical, he was somewhat neglectful of the spiritual arena. He talks about his Christian parents, especially his mother, but he doesn't address spiritual matters in his personal life in any great detail. I know he was on friendly terms with both Billy Graham and Norman Vincent Peale. I'm sure they had some Christian influence on him.
In this book, the president looks back on life as an elder statesman. Some of the advice he gives is pertinent to any arena. When he talks about living with a purpose that transcends self, the focus is beyond political. He devotes time to the human condition, overcoming personal challenges, victories, defeats, and renewals. This is a well-thought out book. Any open minded reader would be stimulated by it.
Book Description
Caspar Weinberger was privileged to have been on the front lines of history as it was being made through most of the 20th century. It is from this perspective that he has written his memoirs.
Customer Reviews:
Required Reading!.......2004-06-08
Upon the recent passing of one of our greatest Presidents, it makes sense to hear from perhaps the best Secretary of Defense (War) in our nation's history. Without boring the reader to death with details, suffice it to say that Caspar W. Weinberger took over our nation's defenses at the weakest they had been since 1939, transformed them into a world-class military power and probably prevented a nuclear war with the former Soviet Union as a consequence.
This autobiography is fascinating and understated, as Secretary Weinberger walks us through his career of public service beginning as an intelligence officer for General Douglas MacArthur to his 8 years of outstanding leadership as the boss over at the Pentagon. Reagan had a gift for picking the right people at the right time and Caspar Weinberger was at the head of his class.
You may be alive today, because of him.
Don't Be Played For A Fool.......2003-02-20
Pity poor Cap Weinberger. Once a Renaissance Man, steeped in art, literature and music, he now spends his twilight years rewriting his legacy. "In The Arena" is a carefully crafted and minutely calculated piece of revisionist history written by a thoroughly corrupt politician beyond redemption. Even if you don't know the facts, Weinberger's prose gives him away, filled as it is with qualifiers, deliberate misstatements and classic Weinberger Distancing Maneuvers. An expert dissembler, Cap has scattered misleading scenarios and outright falsehoods all through the manuscript; it becomes tiresome. Are his memoirs worth reading? If you like being an armchair detective, absolutely. This book challenges discerning and informed readers to unravel a fascinating web of deceit and half-truths. It also contains interesting anecdotes from a simpler time and a glimpse into an honorable world that no longer exists. It's too bad Weinberger hasn't appropriated the values of that world into his own life.
Start on Page 269.......2002-01-13
I preface my comments about "In The Arena" by stating my belief that most people interested in this memoir are attracted by Weinberger's tenure at the helm of the DOD. That being the case, one could simply skim through the first three-fifths of the book. This comprises a mildly interesting, at times desultory, review of Cap's education at Harvard, service in World War II, early California legislative career, private legal practice, work at Bechtel Corp, and service in both Governor Reagan's and President Nixon's administrations. The accounts of Cap's modestly successful efforts to rein in Federal spending as Nixon's OMB Director and to reform health care while heading HEW don't exactly lend themselves to riveting prose.
However, the action and the interest really pick up when Weinberger turns his attention the Reagan administration and his essential role in resuscitating the U.S. military. Particuarly valuable are Weinberger's explanation of the hows and whys behind his metamorphosis from "Cap The Knife" to "Cap The Builder;" his observations on the reasons for the Soviet Union's demise, and his skepticism about Gorbachev's role in that historic event.
This is definitely not a memoir in the "kiss-and-tell" genre. Weinberger offers only cursory insights into policy formulation and the battles with Congress over funding. He expresses veneration for most of his former colleagues, including Colin Powell, Don Rumsfeld, Rich Armitage, Frank Carlucci, Will Taft and Jim Webb. He evinces no animus toward George Shultz, saying they often disagreed, especially on the deployment of armed forces, and is only mildly critical of the imperious demeanor of Al Haig. Weinberger reserves his opprobrium for three people: Bud MacFarlane for his ill-considered counsel to Reagan in the arms-for-hostages scheme; Lawrence Walsh for his baseless, heavy-handed witch-hunt during the Iran-Contra investigation; and former President Clinton for his pursuit of a feckless, irresolute foreign policy and excessive de-funding of the armed services.
Weinberger's account of his "nightmare" year (1992) makes a cogent argument against the ill-conceived Special Prosecutor statute, an argument that the Congressional Democrats bought into only after the glare of its prosecutorial powers was shone on one of its own.
All in all, a fast, engaging read, but one that breaks little new ground.
Fascinating, Intimate View of History...& a History Maker.......2002-01-07
Caspar Weinberger is the epitome of a dedicated, effective public servant. He's a professional in this work, rather than a political hack who appears when it's convenient for him. We've heard Weinberger's name for decades, as he served in cabinet positions for three United States presidents. Most notable was his seven years as Ronald Reagan's Secretary of Defense. There is no question that he's had a significant impact on history.
This is the sort of autobiography that might be interesting, I thought, as I opened the cover and began reading. My first reaction was "uh oh. We're going 'way back into his childhood. That concern was quickly dissolved as I was absorbed in the feeling that Weinberger and I were settled down into a couple of comfortable easy chairs discussing his experiences as a consummate public servant. I learned about his education (Harvard), his military service (infantry, World War II, including time on MacArthur's intelligence staff), and service as a California legislator. This book easily held my attention, page after page. Most of the twentieth century came alive before my eyes.
As he moves through history, Weinberger tells about his pivotal roles with fascinating detail. The reader gains an inside perspective of what was behind historical events that are very familiar to us, and some that are not so familiar. Using the autobiographer's license, Weinberger shares his opinions about people and events. A number of times, I had a sense that I was right there in the room with him as history was being made. He gives just enough detail to paint illuminating pictures of facts, emotions, decisions, and the flow of history; yet the book never drags with a sense that he's using space unproductively.
I enjoyed reading about his views on the Cold War, Saddam Hussein, Iran-Contra, the day Reagan was shot, Watergate, MacArthur, Colin Powell, Bill Clinton's legacy, and Nixon's resignation. As I finished the book, I had a feeling of satisfaction, respect, and appreciation for Caspar Weinberger and his life. A warm feeling, a good feeling. I like getting that from a good book. You will, too.
A fine autobiography by a dedicated public servant.......2001-12-28
IN THE ARENA explores the life of a man who has dedicated his life to making America a better, safer, stronger nation.
Beginning with his wartime service in the U.S. Army in the jungles of New Guinea (he still dislikes palm trees to this day), Mr. Weinberger's public service moves to the California State Assembly where he gains notoriety as a reformer. Soon, he is picked up by California's new governor, Ronald Reagan, who makes him director of finance. His skill at his job attracts notice from President Nixon, who calls him to be the budgeter at OMB, then the Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare. President Ford's defeat in 1976 brought him a few years of high-paid relief from public service at Bechtel. Then, in 1981, President Reagan called him to service once again as the Secretary of Defense, a post he held longer (seven years) than any other SECDEF serving a single President.
Throughout the book, one is struck by Mr. Weinberger's selfless dedication - something the reader comprehends without the author's directly saying so. One hopes that, post 9-11, such dedication to public service will make a comeback. In the meantime, Mr. Weinberger's autobiography will serve as a primer for those who want to make a difference and change the world.
For me, it was an especially warm read as I had the honor of serving in the Office of the Secretary of Defense from 1986 through 1988. During that time I met Mr. Weinberger once and participated in a few meetings in his office. Even though his wife, Jane, was in ill health at that time, I found Mr. Weinberger to be friendly, humorous, and extremely focused and smart - all traits amply shown in his book, IN THE ARENA.

Customer Reviews:
A Nice Cruise of Florida History.......2006-10-22
Charles Bennett offered a number of sketches on some of the leading figures in Jacksonville's history in this short, breezy book. Bennett was a leading authority on La Caroline, the French colony that was destroyed in 1565, and his chapters on French and Timucuan leaders of that era are some of the best of the book. Some of the other chapters seem less satisfying, especially his look at a Spanish friar. Remember that this book was published in 1989 and while this was towards the end of Bennett's long political career, he still was a politician. His chapter on his family relations Jesse duPont and Ed Ball is diplomatic and offers little in the way of personal revelations. Still, Bennett helps shed light on a number of important figures in the shaping of Florida's First Coast. If you are looking for an indepth biographical study of any of the twelve Floridians portrayed here, look elsewhere. But for anyone wanting to know more about Jacksonville's past, this book offers a quick and pleasant trip down the rivers of history.

Understanding David Duke.......2005-10-03
David Duke, former grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, gets upset when you mention his past. In virtually everything he writes and speaks, he claims Jews and others hate and oppose him because he tells the truth. However Duke's writings and speeches are filled with hundreds of lies, half-truths, distortions, tenuous links, very selective reporting and personal opinion. This has been the art of Nazi propoganda
since the 1930s.
SOME OF DAVID DUKE'S LIES
David Duke's books are filled with fake quotes from the Talmud. Fake quotes which originated with Joseph Goebbels of Nazi Germany. Duke even claims that the Talmud is the holiest book in Judaism. (another blatent lie from Nazi Germany). What Duke doesn't mention is that the Talmud is a collection of ancient commentary from rabbis with a wide range of contradicting opinions regarding religious law. A collection of books that mainly only Orthodox Jews read and study.

David Duke turned down atleast two public debates on claims and conclusions in his book Jewish Supremacism. (One with Dennis Prager and the other with Daniel Pipes) Why? Because he knows he is a pathological liar and more importantly he knows that his audience is overwhelmingly psychopathic racists and bigots (some in denial) who are searching for justification for their hatred of Jews.

Slander continued.......2005-04-13
An utterly boring onesided attempt to make money out of lukewarm slander once again. The supposed research is a mixture of the author's regurgitated articles with a liberal dose of citations from Mr. Duke's works, presented completely out of perspective.
Repetetive, narrow minded, and out of date.
More liberal propanganda........2002-03-28
This garbage is almost funny in a sick sort of way.I guess according to Bridges you are a "bigot" if you are white and proud.I picked this book up by mistake, but read it anyway,a complete waste of my time.It is nothing more than a biased slander of a great man of integrity. If you want to know the REAL David Duke,I suggest you purchase My Awakening by Duke himself and avoid the out of context quotes that this book is full of.This is little more than another ... attempt to make European Americans feel guility, and to believe that men like Duke are a "danger".The wolves have convinced the sheep that the dogs are dangerous.
Fascinating.......2001-06-13
The most complete and enlightening book written about one of America's most bizarre characters. A must have for anyone interested in how bent characters can develop a following and a missin.
Truth Stranger Than Any Fiction.......2001-06-05
I just finished reading The Rise of David Duke. It was one of the best books I've ever read. It was an illuminating tale about an important character from the late 20th century. The book was both educational and easy to read. I would recommend it to anyone who truly wants to understand David Duke. This is not a story that Duke would want told. Written by a top flight, Pulitzer-Prize winning investigative reporter, it is meticulously researched, speaking truth stranger than any fiction.

Book Description
In 1997, Regina Bovill was a crack-addicted mother of three who had lost custody of her children, drifted aimlessly from crack house to crack house in search of her next fix, and had lost all conceivable hope of ever having a promising future. Her days were filled with the endless quest for rock cocaine, otherwise known as kryptonite, or crack. From dawn to dusk, she did what she had to do to get and smoke her precious crack cocaine ... then buy and smoke some more. Even when her newborn daughter was born drug-free, Regina didn't heed the unmistakable miracle of her drug-filled afterbirth. Instead, she continued her headlong spiral into a living hell that only ended when a miraculous vision before yet another drug-soaked bender put her off drugs for good. For although Regina had given up on herself, God had not yet given up on her.

Excellent Read.......2006-10-02
Great story!! This book is very captivating, you won't want to put it down.Regina is a wonderful woman!!(Love u Auntie!)
An eye-opener!.......2004-08-09
This is the true story of a woman named Regina. Her mother was her best friend, she was always on the honor role at any school she attended, she went to church every Sunday, and even sang in the choir. It was during her early college years with a roommate that Regina first sampled any type of drug. This is where and when this book begins, in 1977.
"Kryptonite" is street slang for crack cocaine. Now do not go thinking that Regina jumped into drug use with crack. On the contrary, it was a gradual process that began with weed. Her excuse was simply to try it because it could not hurt and she wanted to be nice to her roommate. But the excuses changed often throughout her twenty year addiction. Regina liked the way drugs made her feel. It helped Regina concentrate on her studies or jobs. It helped her stay awake and live on three hours of sleep daily so she could work two full time jobs. It helped Regina cope during hard times. Everyone was doing it. She was not hurting anyone else...The list of excuses go on and on.
**** The editing for the book is not well done. However, the mistakes are not so bad that they detract from Regina's story. And what a story it is! Regina holds back no punches of how bad her life became. Better yet, she blames no one else for her errors of judgement. She takes full responsibility for her actions. I wish that the book told more of what became of Eddie Hall and what happened to James ("the custodian") after he snapped. But the main focus is Regina and her drug life. Through her story, there is hope that others with their lives lost in drugs may read it and decide to change their lives for the better. Or perhaps, a friend or family member will read it to understand and perhaps help. After all, those HARD on drugs have no time or urge to read anything themselves.
All-in-all, this book is a real eye-opener. It gives a real look at the cold, hard, and dark life that drug users go through. Highly recommended reading! ****
