3 out of 5 stars Interesting, good to know, but lacks practicality.......2006-03-24

Angus McIlwraith's book "Information Security and Employee Behaviour" is interesting and well-written, but not enormously useful with regard to the practical matter of implementing a security awareness program.

The first section, "A Framework For Understanding", succeeds in presenting important individual and group psychological factors to consider when seeking to change employee behavior.

However, the second section, "A Framework For Implementation" just gives high-level implementation steps and then describes in great detail only two aspects of implementing a security awareness program - measuring awareness, and choosing delivery media. No practical methodologies are presented. One has the sense that there are several chapters missing. It would have been a more useful book if all five steps in developing an awareness program proposed by the author in chapter 4 had been elaborated upon.

If you are someone looking for practical help in putting together an entire security awareness program, by far the best book out there at this point is "Managing an Information Security and Privacy Awareness and Training Program by Rebecca Herold.

      Book Description

Are we alone in the universe?

The search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) has been given fresh impetus in recent years following developments in space science which go beyond speculation. The evidence that many stars are accompanied by planets, the detection of organic material in the circumstellar disks of which planets are created, and claims regarding microfossils on Martian meteorites have all led to many new empirical searches.

Against the background of these dramatic new developments in science, SETI critically evalutes claims concerning the status of SETI as a genuine scientific research program and examines the attempts to establish contact with other intelligent life forms in the past thirty years. David Lamb also asseses competing theories on the origin of life on Earth, discoveries of ex-solar planets and proposals for space colonies as well as the technical and ethical issues bound up with them. Most importantly, he considers the benefits and drawbacks of communicationwith new life forms: how we should communicate and whether we should.

4 out of 5 stars The Search for a Good SETI Book: Found!.......2004-06-11

Altough i am not a big SETI book reader, i am a big SETI advocate. I've done my share of research and Science Channel watching, but until i read David Lamb's book, i never really understood what was going on. The author not only tells you what sort of intelligences could be out there (machine, laser beams, etc) but also explains how to communicate to such. I've yet to read other SETI books to compare it to, so i can't give it 5/5, but 4/5 is still good enough to buy.

4 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking, despite some technical errors.......2003-10-17

David Lamb, an instructor in philosophy and bioethics, brings a refreshingly different perspective to the search for ETI and the implications of possible future contact. He examines the assumptions and logic of those engaged in SETI, particularly astronomers. Lamb points out that arguments based on probability and analogy can not be conclusive, though they provide legitimate bases for scientific speculation. He acknowledges that SETI differs from most sciences in the sense that it is driven by metaphysical beliefs and deep psychological desires for companionship. But, he adds, world-views do not have to be antithetical to scientific evidence.

Lamb comes down in favor of continuing the search. "SETI might well turn out to be an example of too much speculation chasing too few facts," he writes, "but this is not an argument for dismissing its conjectures as nonsense; rather, it indicates a requirement to go ahead and produce more facts." He believes that most of our predictions about contact with an advanced civilization are likely to be wrong. Lamb includes balanced presentations on the Fermi Paradox and the UFO phenomenon.

The book contains some errors about scientific facts. In discussing the Drake equation and related issues, Lamb provides wildly varying figures for the number of stars in our galaxy. He writes that, if a Gamma Ray Burster went off near the center of our galaxy, "within seconds the Earth would be exposed to a massive wave of gamma rays." These errors do not undermine his basic arguments; the virtues of the book far outweigh its minor faults.

The Vine of Desire is peopled by Indian immigrants and--just as palpably--by their hopes and dreams. As one character says, "All immigrants are dreamers, but they're practical about it. They know what's OK to dream about, and what isn't." Though it's a sequel to Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni's Sister of My Heart, the novel stands alone as an exploration of the contemporary immigrant experience. Anju and Sudha, cousins and best friends since their Calcutta girlhood, find themselves in the Bay Area, Anju with a husband and Sudha with a baby daughter. Each covets what the other has until finally their relationship collapses. Anju finds solace among her fellow Berkeley students, while the beautiful Sudha learns, for the first time, what it's like to pay her own way. Digressive and overwritten, The Vine of Desire can try your patience, but it's so well plotted and compassionately told that you can't help but care about these immigrant dreams. --Claire Dederer

            Book Description

The beloved characters of Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s bestselling novel Sister of My Heart are reunited in this powerful narrative that challenges the emotional bond between two lifelong friends, as the husband of one becomes dangerously attracted to the other.
Anju and Sudha formed an astounding, almost psychic connection during their childhood in India. When Anju invites Sudha, a single mother in Calcutta, to come live with her and her husband, Sunil, in California, Sudha foolishly accepts, knowing full well that Sunil has long desired her. As Sunil’s attraction rises to the surface, the trio must struggle to make sense of the freedoms of America–and of the ties that bind them to India and to one another.

In a novel that reunites the beloved characters of Sister of My Heart, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni explores the emotional ties between two lifelong friends -- and how they change when the husband of one is dangerously attracted to the other.

The Vine of Desire continues the story of Anju and Sudha, the two young women at the center of Divakaruni's bestselling novel Sister of My Heart. Far from Calcutta, the city of their childhood, and after years of living separate lives, Anju and Sudha rekindle their friendship in America. The deep-seated love they feel for each other provides the support each of them needs. It gives Anju the strength to pick up the pieces of her life after a miscarriage, and Sudha the confidence to make a life for herself and her baby daughter, Dayita -- without her husband. The women's bond is shaken to the core when they must confront the deeply passionate feelings that Anju's husband has for Sudha. Meanwhile, the unlikely relationships they form with men and women in the world outside the immigrant Indian community as well as with their families in India profoundly transform them, forcing them to question the central assumptions of their lives.

A moving and satisfying sequel to Sister of My Heart, The Vine of Desire stands on its own as a novel of extraordinary depth and sensitivity. Through the eyes of people caught in the clash of cultures, Divakaruni reveals the rewards and the perils of breaking free from the past and the complicated, often contradictory emotions that shape the passage to independence.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as I expected...........2006-06-27

This book was difficult to get through and I felt very disappointed after reading it. Divakaruni's style of writing is good. She is quite descriptive but if felt she did a poor job with the story. I didn't care for any of the characters and still had too many questions after finishing the book. I also felt some parts of the book were drawn out too long.

            1 out of 5 stars I wish I hadn't read it.......2006-06-12

Sister of My Heart is one of my all time favorite books--I love everything about that book and that is why I was so excited to discover the Divakaruni wrote a sequet to it. But after reading it I wish I had not. Yes, it was nice to have so many of the questions, left over from the first book, answered but this book ruined the characters for me.

My review of it has nothing against Divakaruni as a writer, she is extremely talented and gifted but I hate where the story ended up. I also hated that I no longer cared for the characters. Overall I found it to be just ordinary and almost forced.

As far as this book is concerned I would have liked to be left in the dark.

5 out of 5 stars Companion to "Sister".......2005-10-28

I read this book immediately after the first one--"Sister of my heart". As a complete story, she has provided a very compelling glimpse into the hearts of two women who are closer than sisters, closer than friends. Also, we get to glimpse another culture, and when the setting shifts to the USA, we get to see the American culture through immigrant eyes. I love this author and these books, and cannot recommend them highly enough.

            5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2005-09-15

If you have read My Sister, My Heart and loved it as I did, you will want to read this sequel. It is a bit slow moving at first as she brings the reader up to date on the previous novel, but after that it is as gripping as the first.

The career of Wayne Morse, Oregon's maverick senator (1944-68), offers insights on political issues that shaped the twentieth century and continue to echo in the twenty-first. Best known for being one of two senators to oppose the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution that initiated U.S. military intervention in Vietnam, Morse also maintained outspoken, principled stances on McCarthyism, labor rights, civil rights, equal access to education, the death penalty, and the importance of the checks and balances written into the Constitution. Morse could be eccentric and contradictory, but he was consistent in his readiness to speak against prevailing opinion and party politics in support of his personal convictions.

Drawing on archival research, oral histories, and interviews with scores of Morse's contemporaries, Mason Drukman captures the vitality of a man who became dean of the University of Oregon Law School at age thirty-two, was involved in labor struggles of the 1930s and 1940s, and became the member of Congress most responsible for improving American education during the years of the New Frontier and the Great Society. In a balanced account and with lucid prose, Drukman offers a critical look at several decades of U.S. politics.

                5 out of 5 stars A great 20th Century Politician.......2003-09-11

I was a student and the University of Oregon in the 60's and had many opportunities to see Wayne Morse on campus and around town.

He was truly one of the twentieth century's great politicians.

It is sad to look back to the Vietnam era and realize he was (nearly) the lone voice of descent in the Government. All of those lost friends who died for no good reason.

Wayne Morse is the perfect example of the politican who approached issues from a common sense point of view instead of a partisan point of view. He was such a good labor negotiator because he approached each negotiation from a reasoned point of view. He knew when either labor or management was full of B.S. and he told them so.

This is also why he changed parties. Didn't have time for partisan politics when his party was not doing the right thing. The other great politician of the twentieth century who changed parties was Winston Churchill, who shared a balanced vision of the political world.

Hopefully we'll see another Wayne Morse one of these days, but not likley in the current enviornment

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating account of a true maverick.......1999-10-15

Senator Morse is one of our country's great historical figures. Mr. Drukman conveys the fascinating history of a man who was at the center of the cold war and foresaw a great many of the tragedies that unfolded in american foreign policy during the 1960's- most notably Vietnam. He was an outstanding politician- they just don't make em like this anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, thorough examination of a fascinating leader........1999-09-19

Drukman explores nearly every facet of this incredible leader. Further, he does so with clear, thoughtful writing which illuminates the fascinating figures in every chapter. After researching Wayne Morse for three years myself (for a documentary film), I can honestly say that he is the only politician I know of who never once strayed from principle or betrayed the public trust. Indeed he sought to save America from those who did.

                    Book Description

Robert R. Bataille demonstrates convincingly that between 1767 and 1777, Anglo-Irish writer Hugh Kelly made major contributions in three areas of British culture: politics, journalism, and theater. Bataille shows how all three activities were integrated in Kelly’s life, suggesting that such interrelationships often existed in the rough and ready London culture during the early reign of King George III.

When he discovered several newspaper campaigns that Kelly orchestrated as a paid political propagandist for George III and his ministers, Bataille understood in part how important Kelly was to his era. In his capacity as propagandist, Kelly defended Hanoverian colonial policies on the eve of the American Revolution, served as a key opponent of the radical Wilkites, and promoted the acceptance of the 1774 Quebec Bill, which established, among other things, the right of the recently defeated French citizens of Quebec to maintain the French language.

A belletristic journalist, Kelly published theater reviews and essays that played a major role in shaping the taste of his era. He wrote in defense of the controversial sentimental drama, and whenever he could, he promoted the major theatrical figure of the age, David Garrick. Under his editorship, the newspaper Public Ledger became a leading source of theater information. Seeking to raise the status of the profession of journalism, he wrote essays and articles that provided his middle-class readers with an insider’s view of the operations of the journalist.

Assessing Kelly’s contributions to the novel and drama, Bataille argues that this powerful journalist stands in the vanguard in the larger struggle against traditional attitudes supporting male superiority and aristocratic privilege. Kelly wrote in favor of gender equality and middle-class respectability, striving to inculcate what modern scholars refer to as the values of sensibility. Bataille also argues, however, that Kelly knew his audience. Instrumental in the rise of professional writing and popular culture, he understood that he had to observe the needs of his audience, detecting cultural trends and using the skills of the rhetorician.

Best of Temp Slave! is a screaming artillery of work-related stories harvested from the internationally famous temp worker zine, Temp Slave! This book is a mighty megaphone for the thousands who slave in offices where self-worth and job security are forever defined by the word temporary.

5 out of 5 stars Didn't want it to end!.......2002-02-04

My only complaint with this book is that its too short! I wish it were longer! I loved the stories, they were so entertaining!

3 out of 5 stars To live outside the law you must be honest.......2001-03-02

While this book is an excellent recount of the truth of life as lived for most of us (including an essay on what it is like for a real working person to live and work in France, which is no piqnique by any means), literature has a dual duty.

One is to tell the truth about mere suffering and of course Temp Slave does so.

The other is to reinforce the lesson with a committment to truth and Temp Slave does not do so.

That is, it is disingenuous to want to hold the wicked capitalists to schoolbook notions of honesty and plain dealing when within the same essay you recommend an interesting variety of ways of soldiering, goofing off, and stealing time.

Leon Trotsky tried and failed to answer the question of ethics in "Their Morals and Ours." One can read Lev Davidovich as wanting to live justly but ultimately painting himself in a dead end because of a misreading of Marx, and the result was tragic, involving as it did a hammer in the head in Mexico.

The only answer is an absolute committment, from the subordinate side of the job equation, to honesty and fair dealing, leavened with an absolute committment to solidarity with one's fellow workers, extending up into middle management, and, to the extent that CEOs are human, to Jack Welch of General Electric. The lesson of our century is that peaceful change succeeds whereas violent revolution and sabotage does not, instead producing the opposite of the desired effect (as well as good old Fascism.)

The hatred we've seen for people like Mihail Gorbachev seems focused on their verbosity (Gorbachev gets on Russian TV, only to be cut off.) But verbosity itself may only be the process of peaceful change speaking the truth in Taoist fashion, a dripdrop of water wearing away the rock.

The authors in Temp Slave seem anti-intellectual and so exhausted by their jobs and pleasures that they would not sit still for a Gorbachev: but I cannot see how they then have any alternative to today's computerized and prison-like work place.

Human affairs do not follow the rules of machines and soldiering, goofing off and stealing time does not make it hard for the bosses. They have ways of predicting such antics and compensating for them, and one of the most popular ways is cracking down on us fools who try not to goof off.

Human affairs follow the laws of the dialectic, or perhaps chaos theory. Thus bloody-mindedness is not a revolutionary act taking place in a vacuum but dialogic...it sends a message to the bosses, all right, and the message gets an instant response in the form of INCREASED amounts of workplace surveillance and increased crackdowns on The Rest of Us.

It's all very well to feel oh-so-superior to your lifer coworkers when you are a temp of arcane sexual persuasion with an advanced degree in Irish economic history. For it is true that society and the workplace damages people.

But check out your own damage first. While the women narrators of Temp Slave try to maintain a connection with the earth by taking breaks in a nearby park, the male writers seem to maintain a connection with Budweiser in their off-hours.

That's all very well: it is not for me to deny a workingman his pleasures. But it means that we cannot make absolute statements about what pathetic losers fulltime employees are when in many cases they are making the best of a bad situation.

To live outside the law, you must be honest, and I look for a literature of work that is honest all the way down. I do not find it in Temp Slave. Instead, I found it in Ellen Ullman's SLAVES TO THE MACHINE, about what it is like to be a REAL computer programmer, only a cut or so higher on the food chain than the temp.

I know you always say that you agree: so where are you tonight, Sweet Marie?

Thought this book used too many negative incidents, no lessons learned. If you want an original, entertaining, positive and negative look at temping from America's first authored temp (even testified for temps in Congress) read Temporarily Yours by Wendy Perkins. You will love it!

5 out of 5 stars The writing is by temps, who tell the whole truth about temp.......1998-11-28

Best of Temp Slave by Jeff Kelly Garrett County Press; ISBN: 1891053426

This entertaining little book includes over 30 hilarious essays, along with numerous cartoons and comics about temping. The writing is by temps, who tell the whole truth about temping. They also offer great advice for temps on how to get even with the bosses.

Definitely not a rose-colored-glasses view of temping or work in non-union, corporate dominated America. This book covers the daily grind of insecurity, humiliation, and insult that temps endure. Instead of dream world advice, Temp Slave contains advice based upon real world experience, where neither the temp agencies or their clients give a flying damn about the temp, except for the mega-bucks we generate for them.

It is very refreshing to read a book by temps and for temps that show how many temps feel the abused. Best of Temp Slave lets temps see how they are not alone or aberrant in their feelings of abuse and insult. This book is an excellent contribution to the task of re-creating the worker solidarity that is necessary to overturn abusive working conditions in corporate dominated America.

2 out of 5 stars See how low temp employees can go in this book........1998-10-22

In an era of downsizing, rightsizing and mergers, American employees have taken a beating. Never has that been more evident than in this supposidly humorous portrayal of temps (temporary employees) in the workplace today. Brief stories, comic strips and essays relay the plight of temps in their own words. Jeff Kelly admirably tries to give temps a voice through his zine and in this book. But what's here are endlessly wining, devious and downright hostile tales of employees, which I found horrifying. You'll read about major supply rip-offs (as if it's okay to steal because you're a temp and not treated like you want); nasty attitudes; plots to disrupt work and harm others; misplaced mail plots, and on and on. You'll also have the displeasure of reading dark comics that are riddled with anger and hate. I've been a temp, and I do think there are plenty of problems with temp agencies and how companies treat temps. But most of the temps featured in this book obviously don't want to do anything constructive about the situation. They just want to squeeze all they can from their assignments and irritate as many people as possible. Okay, one or two of the stories are funny. And alas, at least Kelly has provided a forum for temps, and in doing that, one could argue he's being constructive and his book is serving a purpose. But I found it a real downer.
