Book Description
It is only since recent years that the importance of the effects of outdoor lighting on the night-time environment and on the physical and mental health of humans is recognized on a wider scale. The related issue of light pollution is a particularly complex one, with potential conflicts of interest between the utilities, environmentalists, astronomers, the lighting industry and various government departments. Energy politics are always a sensitive issue, and light pollution is no exception to this rule.
The effects of light pollution on flora, fauna -including humans and their widely varying night-time activities- are often subtle and need extensive field studies to be quantified in a sensible manner.
The present conference, initiated by Commission 50 of the International Astronomical Union, is an attempt to bring together the astronomical community, the lighting industry, end-users, the utilities, and public authorities for a discussion and an exchange of ideas and information that will create goodwill among these groups and will thus contribute to making the global efforts to reduce pollution more efficient and effective.
Radio frequency pollution was also discussed in the context of radio astronomy and its efforts to create radio-quiet zones in collaboration with the government authorities that allocate frequency bands to the various users -mainly the telecommunications industry- and to protect the major planned and present radio observatories of the world.
The 3-day conference was attended by more than 130 representatives from 12 countries of all the above-mentioned groups, and a wide range of topics was discussed.
Some of the highlights were:
The presentation of the 1st world atlas of artificial night sky brightness (Cinzano et al.); the article by the International Darksky Association on their world-wide efforts to curb light pollution (Alvarez del Castillo et al.); the laws controlling light pollution implemented in Spain (Diaz et al.) and Chile (Sanhueza et al.), an overview of the work on radio frequency protection of sites (Cohen et al.) and the excellent introduction to the topic from the Chilean point of view (Daud).
Related topics in the book are light pollution education, aircraft contrails, space advertising (with an added document provided by the relevant UN commission), and an experiment on involving the population of an entire country in measuring sky brightness, by using the internet and the media.
The text is aimed at professionals from a wide range of disciplines related to lighting and its effects on the night-time environment in the broadest sense of the word. Lay persons interested in this emerging multi-disciplinary field can also find much of interest in this book.

Robin Baker is one of the people who brought us the notion of kamikaze sperm: valiant but impotent swimmers who sacrifice themselves so that one (or more) of their brethren--as opposed to some other guy's sperm--will secure a man's genetic legacy. In Sperm Wars, Baker told us that the evolutionary drive of our biology determined with whom we mated. In Sex in the Future, he speculates on how. Using the same format of fictionalized scenarios followed by more factual discussion, Baker peers into his sociobiological crystal ball to forecast how we might reproduce in the future, and what it will do to our society. Baker sees the multiplication of assisted reproductive technologies as a social revolution. Sex, love, and reproduction will be divorced. The concept of heterosexuality will be practically meaningless. Children will be commissioned in a much more precise way than can now be done either through mate selection or gamete selection. Sex in the Future is certainly provocative. Some of the content is factual, some is plausible speculation, and some is fantastical. This is not a book full of useful information for people trying to conceive. The bibliography is slight, and Baker is something of a black sheep in the scientific community, the martial nature of sperm having been largely discredited (New Scientist described him as "a sociobiology zealot"). But it certainly is a brave new world of baby-making out there. Might Baker's "Contraceptive Café" and "Reproductive Restaurant" be part of it? You be the judge. --J.R.
Book Description
Provocative and often shocking, Sex in the Future examines how advances in reproductive technology will change human behavior. In-vitro fertilization and surrogate motherhood could mean the end not only of infertility but also of the need for men and women to form relationships or for women to interrupt careers for pregnancy. Sperm and egg storage mean people can literally shop for genes, while cloning, egg-egg fertilization, and other techniques will lead to fertility on demand in a Reproduction Restaurant. What will all our choices be, and how far down this road do we want to travel?
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2000-12-04
Robin Baker had a true winner with "Sperm Wars" but his more recent book on reproduction and family life in the future is far from convincing. His predictions about sexual behavior in the future are in a nutshell based on a couple of fundamental premises:
1. Those who can afford it (and Baker predicts that most of us in the near future can), will at a young age have either their eggs surgically removed or donate their sperm and have them stored in a "gamete bank". With the help of in vitro fertilization and other methods widely available in the future this will allow the separation of reproduction and sex. A human dream may finally come true, we overcome nature, we will be freed from our animalistic instincts and can enjoy the act without the possible "remorse" 9 months later.
2. DNA testing will make it always possible to determine the biological father of a child. The father will have to pay child support based on his income (and the number of children he already fathered), the mother who will receive the support will be financially secure. Baker predicts that men may actually have the most to lose when a women gives birth to a child, because the man's child support will make it attractive for women to have children. Actually, women may trick wealthy men into unprotected sex to be able to collect child support money from that individual. Baker describes this as a dramatic change to the current situation where it is usually the women who have the burden of raising and supporting a child, while receiving little or no child support from the fathers.
Baker's theories are based on what may be scientifically and biologically possible in the future. With the exception of human cloning, most of the reproductive methods described in his book are already available and may just need slight improvements and cost reduction to become feasible. However, Baker only occasionally admits that our evolutionary heritage may render all his predictions of future reproduction and sex life null and void. Will women really just go to the surgeon and have all their eggs removed to be able to reproduce at a later time with or without a sex-partner or to enjoy unprotected sex? As this is highly questionable and definitely arguable Baker does little to convince the reader that his predictions of future sex and family life are indeed the right ones. Where Baker's predictions really could do with some substantiation is on his assumption that women will easily be able to collect child support from the biological fathers of their children, shifting the burden (at least the financial) of child raising from the mother to the father. Baker does not address how such a system of child support collection would or could work. What makes Baker think that the women in the future would not have the same difficulty that exists today in getting the deadbeat fathers to pay their child support? Would all men upon birth have to submit cell samples to an international agency that creates a DNA footprint of that individual and any woman or child support agency can tap into the database to look for a biological father for a child? Aside from the privacy issues, that could only theoretically work as all nations, all laws and all religions would have to support such an agency and its enforcement actions. Hard to imagine.
Baker's book is thought provoking and some of the methods he describes will likely become part of the future of human reproduction. Unfortunately, Baker does little to convince the reader that it will be as widespread as he predicts. He certainly can do better.
A provocative, informative examincation of choices & trends........2000-08-04
How will the new reproductive revolution change society and sexuality in the future? Sex in the Future covers such topics as in-vitro fertilization choices, surrogate motherhood, gamete storage, and the marketing of gene characteristics alike, covering the new choices and ethical concerns brought by the new technologies. A provocative examination of current and future choices.
The Culture War is about to get hot!.......2000-07-19
Sex in the Future is a provocative survey of the new reproductive technologies coming down the pipeline in the next few decades. The science is straightforward and should be a shock only to the traditional-minded. Where Baker truly pushes the envelope is in his extrapolation of how these technologies will redefine the family in the 21st Century. Baker sees the end of the nuclear family - already fading today - being replaced with widespread single parent families and temporary partnerships. While something like this could happen in Europe, it may have a tougher time gaining popularity in a more religious America. But then, given the impact of thirty years of divorce, feminism, and gay rights, the family has already been radically redefined here. If technology and politics develop as Baker predicts, future families could be stranger than we know. One can only hope that the children will turn out happy.
What's perhaps most unsettling about the book are the vignettes that Baker uses to introduce each chapter. The characters in each of these stories are often selfish, materialistic, and Machiavellian, featuring women trying to trap wealthy men into fathering children, and men trying to avoid responsibility for the children they sire. And rarely do we see anything like affection or love, something you would think as being fundamental to a discussion about families. One could argue that Baker is showing extreme examples of human behavior in order to show the potential consequences of the technologies and institutions he discusses. But even so, the fictional sections are alarming enough to add more fuel to a controversial subject.
In spite of this, Sex in the Future is full of intriguing ideas and radical possibilities. It makes you think about the future, and that's always a good thing.

Series heroine Alexandra Cooper, head of Manhattan's sex crimes unit, returns in a novel that might have been titled "Nevermore,": focused as it is on the life and works of Edgar Allan Poe. When the body of a two-decades-old skeleton is found bricked up behind a wall in a soon-to-be-demolished building where Poe once lived, it looks like a very cold case indeed. But then that old murder is linked to a more current slaying, one that at first looks like the work of the Silk Stocking Rapist, Alex's old enemy, who terrorized the upper East Side of Manhattan several years ago but hasn't been heard from since. As usual, Alex and her good friends, detectives Mercer Wallace and Mike Chapman, take the reader to an area of New York most tourists never see--in this case, the Bronx Botanical Gardens and its wild, forested environs--and bring it dramatically to life. Just in case Poe ever has his own category on Alex's favorite TV show, there's enough trivia included about the master of the macabre's life and work to propel any reader to Final Jeopardy. Entombed is a smart, stylish, well-told tale. --Jane Adams
Book Description
It was a crime scene Edgar Allan Poe himself could have conjured, only it was all too real: workers demolishing a nineteenth-century Greenwich Village brownstone where Poe once lived unearthed the skeleton of a young woman -- buried standing upright behind a brick wall. Manhattan Assistant D.A. Alexandra Cooper takes on the gruesome case while in pursuit of the Silk Stocking Rapist, who is terrorizing the Upper East Side. But Alex discovers that one crime thread leads to the other as she follows a trail of clues to the Bronx Botanical Gardens, where a group of Poe devotees may shed light on a stone-cold, modern-day murder of gothic proportions...and a cunning killer with a bone-chilling tale to tell.
Download Description
"From New York Times bestselling author and famed former Manhattan prosecutor Linda Fairstein comes a chilling new Alexandra Cooper novel, Entombed, in which Alex matches wits with the master of detective fiction himself-Edgar Allan Poe... Workers demolishing a nineteenth-century brownstone where Edgar Allan Poe once lived discover a human skeleton entombed -- standing -- behind a brick wall. When sex crimes prosecutor Alexandra Cooper hears about the case, it strikes her as a classic Poe scene...except that forensic evidence shows that this young woman died within the last twenty-five years. Meanwhile, Alex's old nemesis the Silk Stocking Rapist is once again terrorizing Manhattan's Upper East Side. The attacks soon escalate to murder, and the search leads Alex and detectives Mercer Wallace and Mike Chapman to the city's stunning Bronx Botanical Gardens. There, an enigmatic librarian presides over the Raven Society, a group devoted to the work of Poe. In exploring the fabled writer's tormented life for clues, Alex will cross paths with a cunning killer and face some of the greatest challenges of her career. Entombed is masterful, exhilarating crime fiction from one of crime writing's most dazzling stars. "
Customer Reviews:
POE IS THE ANSWER...WHAT WAS THE QUESTION???.......2007-08-11
Fairstein's epistle gives the reader a lot of information to chew on and digest. First, we have the return of a rapist who has been strangely silent for the past four years, as well as a series of seemingly unconnected murders. When workmen demolishing a 19th century brownstone that was once the home of Edgar Allan Poe discover the body of a woman buried upright behind a brick wall it appears that "life is imitating art" and someone has taken a page out of a Poe novel.
Utilizing the search for the dual criminals as the "background" for the story, Fairstein takes us on a tour of the Bronx. She gives us an up close and personal look at the Botanical Gardens which contains 50 acres of forest, the waterfalls of the Bronx River Gorge, a "crystal palace" conservatory containing 17,000 glass panes, and the first Hall of Fame in America (an outdoor vista containing 98 bronze busts of Great Americans ranging from poets, to jurists, to soldiers).
And I thought Central Park was the only touch of green in NYC.
The garden, she tells us, was once owned by P. Lorillard, tobacco scion, and contains an old snuff mill as well as Poe cottage, where Poe lived with his wife/cousin until her death. (And now you have the "connector" between the Bronx Botanical Tour and the murderer who feels a kinship with Poe and commits his crimes according to macabre Poe plots).
Fairstein fleshes out her rather thin plot with loads of in depth facts and observations about everything from Fordham University to the Gould Library. All of the "facts" that liberally pepper the book could serve as the basis for a plethora of Jeopardy final questions (a game that her alter ego, Alex Cooper, and friends Mike and Mercer are rather fond of playing).
Emtombed is more a guided tour of the Bronx and a look at Poe's sad existance than the murder mystery with gothic overtones I'm sure it was meant to be.
Not As Good As Others.......2007-07-31
This book wasn't as good as the others. The Edgar Allan Poe parts were interesting but that's not why I bought the book. I bought it because of the way Ms. Fairstein puts together mysteries and her leads solve them. I loved how she usually has them interact both professionally and personally. But in this book it felt stilted and forced. I felt she had so many mysteries going on at once that she had to tie together that she didn't really do any of them justice. I was just disappointed in this book. Granted I haven't read all her books but the ones I have read are better than this. This one was jumbled up and wasn't logical. Alex Cooper has usually held her own but in this book, it was like she was a bumbling idiot. Just sad for this strong, smart character. I hope the series get better than this. Can't wait to give another a try.
Pure Genius.......2007-03-24
Great story with interesting plot twists. I learned new facts about the Poe family, such as February 2nd being the anniversary of Virginia Poe's funeral which is also the day "The Raven Returns" was written.
Good story but REALLY dumb errors........2006-07-19
Overall, I found this an entertaining read. Unlike a previous reviewer, I enjoyed the Poe references. But like a previous reviewer, I did find it amazing how the supposedly smart heroine got herself into so many really stupid situations.
And there were two really stupid errors in the book. First, there are no bats with 4 foot wing spans in New York. Or anywhere in the US, for that matter. Second, people who drown in fresh water do NOT have water in their lungs. The fresh water is sucked into the blood through the lungs by the great osmotic pressure differential between the very salty blood and the non-salty fresh water. Thus, inexperienced pathologists are often confused when a body of someone who drowned in fresh water is found to have no water in the lungs.
Poe is the best Part.......2006-06-21
As many other reviewers this is my first Linda Fairstein mystery. To start on the positive the description of the Bronx expecially the Botanical Gardens and Poe Park were interesting. I also learned a great deal about Poe. ( Poe seems in vogue with a new book by Matthew Pearl on Poe)
The characters seem to busy being clever to be interesting. Chapman's romance may be more meaningful to readers who know the series but all I thought it did was show they were deep and did not add to the story.
On the whole it is a diverting book but there are many better series.

Tanzania: Journey to Republic is a mix of historicaly signifigant events and personal rememberings of author Randal Sandleir. Upon reading the book one can gain a better understanding of Tanganyika and Tanzania from both the native and British perspective. Although the book is filled with colorful events that occured to Sandleir's 30 year stay with the Colonial Service at time it lacks the necessary historical content true historians will be looking for. With a forward by Julius Nyerere one can be sure that Sandlier was on the inside track of Tanzania's politics for the time he served as an expatriate.

Book Description
". . . an extremely important novel . . . quite startling in its revelations of money and gender as key social mechanisms in nineteenth-century Brazilian life."
Daphne Patai, professor of Spanish and Portuguese and of women's studies, University of Massachusetts at Amherst
"It is a truth universally acknowledged . . ." that a single woman in possession of a good character but no fortune must be in want of a wealthy husbandthat is, if she is the heroine of a nineteenth-century novel.
Senhora, by contrast, turns the tables on this familiar plot. Its strong-willed, independent heroine Aurélia uses newly inherited wealth to "buy back" and exact revenge on the fiancé who had left her for a woman with a more enticing dowry.
This exciting Brazilian novel, originally published in 1875 and here translated into English for the first time, raises many questions about traditional gender relationships, the commercial nature of marriage, and the institution of the dowry. While conventional marital roles triumph in the end, the novel still offers realistic insights into the social and economic structure of Rio de Janeiro in the mid-1800s. With its unexpected plot, it also opens important new perspectives on the nineteenth-century Romantic novel.

This book talk about a romence, Aurelia got maried to Seixas after she got rich. She wants to see if he loves her or not, because she was poor in the past and he didn`t get married to her when she was poor. I do not recommend it because this book is a little slow.
Not For Everyone.......2002-10-24
Alencar was Brazil's first great novelist, at a time when the country was still developing its own identity. "Senhora", published in 1875, is one of his best. Alencar was nothing if not prolific, he wrote dozens of novels, plays, and poetry, and worked as a journalist and politician. "Senhora" is interesting because it came out during a period when so little serious fiction featured strong women as protagonists. Aurelia, the title character, is a beautiful young woman who comes into a huge inheritance in 19th-century Rio de Janeiro and overturns social conventions by buying the husband of her choice. So the story's real depth and primary point of discussion revolves around Brazil's upper class norms, women's social roles, and the power of wealth. It is interesting in this regard. Alencar's Romanticism is rooted in a sort of pre-revolutionary distaste (if not disgust) for established social conventions. He was a wealthy intellectual criticizing his own milieu.
Perhaps his descriptions of wealth --pages dedicated to the delicate inlays in a single piece of furniture or the passion of a waltz-- are overwrought, and may strike some readers as being born of Alencar's lust for upper class pursuits, rather than of any detached criticism of them. Readers must be prepared for these careful descriptions of wealthy follies, for by modern standards very little happens in the story. Alencar was a Romanticist, meaning that he cultivated in his writing elements of anti-classicism, of free-form emotion, and of descriptions of settings rather than tracing the chronology of a plot. This is a story driven on one level by its complicated prose and on another by its social criticism and the depth of its characters. Modern readers looking for plot and action may not have the patience for this book, and may also find the ending (called a "surprising twist" by some critics) to be a bit of a cop-out. It's as though Alencar didn't want to write any longer or didn't want to disappoint what he imagined to be a primarily female audience thirsting for romantic closure.
A brazilian romantic classic.......2000-01-16
A read this book a long time ago, in high school, and enjoyed it very much. For those of you who know nothing about brazilian literature, here goes a little profile about the author: "JOSÉ MARTINIANO DE ALENCAR was born in Mecejana, Ceará, on 1 May, 1829, and died in Rio de Janeiro on 12 December, 1877. He studied law in São Paulo and Olinda, and then threw himself into the journalistic world of Rio de Janeiro. He later entered politics becoming a deputy and eventually Minister of Justice. The refusal of the Emperor, however, to accept his nominatiou as senator caused him to retire from public life. One of the most prolific of Brazilian writers, José de Alencar was at the same time journalist, novelist, dramatist and poet. He was widely read in French literature, and romantic writers such as Dumas, Chateaubriand and Hugo had a profound influence on him. To the romantic mood of the day he added a fervent patriotism, which found its ideal subject in the history of his conntry, and especially in the life and legends of the Brazilian Indian, whose champion he became (c. f. Gonçalves Dias in poetry). His interest ranged the whole length and breadth of Brazil, and there are few regions of that vast country which did not provide subjectmatter for his pen. He practically created the Brazilian historical novel, and achieved wide popularity with the publication of such works as O Guarani (Rio, 1857); As Minas de Prata (Rio, 1862); and Iracema (Rio, 1865). The exuberance of his frankly avowed romanticism and a pompous, declamatory style are now very foreign to our modem taste, but his gifts as a story-teller and his patriotic spirit will always ensure him a place among Brazil's most popular writers. Other major works: O Gaúcho (Rio, 1870); O Tronco do Ipê (Rio, 1871); Ubirajara (Rio, 1874); Senhora (Rio, 1875)."
give your heart a good work-out! ejercicio para el corazón!.......1999-11-05
This book is amazing! Very romantic in a unique, intense, vivid, ironic, and poetic way. The author geniously has created a most remarkable woman whom, through money, will buy her ex into marriage with hope that he will be torn enough between love and their game of ironic humiliation to break out his profound feelings of love for her and see how hers painfully never faded. an excellent novel, one of the best i have ever read!

(how's that translation? ¿qué tal la traducción?)

Must read for Tories everywhere........2000-01-16
Segal does a masterful job of explaining what has motivated him over the years as well as giving us a look at the Mulroney years. I liked the book and gave others as gifts to other Tories that I know. It was well worth my time to read!

Refreshing, natural, and well written.......2002-09-24
A real page turner. I recommend this book as a good summer read on the beach (though you run the risk of an erection)or a serious study of how life really is like for a gay man in a Muslim country. I found the normalcy and erotic semsitivity of the sex scenes to be charming and real. My big complaint was that I finished it too quickly. As I finished, I wanted to learn more about the charming Dick, and how the transmutation of life was proceeding. In other words, I wanted more! A sequel! More sex, more pompous analysis. More!
Too much sex and not enough substance.......2001-06-03
But I guess that is what gay men want to read. As a Muslim, I was really hoping for more insight on Islam and homosexuality. Instead it's just the tales (many of which, the author notes in the introduction, are fake) of an oversexed man and his sex life. Probably most American gay men who have ethnic fetishes will find the book titilating, he does go into great detail of his sex life (ex. seducing the servents in his home, sex on vacation, when he moves to San Francisco). I on the other hand wish there was more to it than that.
what a find!.......1998-12-07
A friend suggested I read this book, and I must say it is one of the most interesting books I have read in a long while. My only complaint is, it should be longer, his style of writing is engaging and a pleasure to read, and the subject matter is handled from a wide range of perspectives. This is the first book written BY a gay Pakistani that I have read, and I hope Badrudding writes some more. The book is satisfying, entertaining, provocative, and just plain fun to read.
Extraordinary.......1997-12-08
Wow! What a find! This is the first book of its kind, and well written too! The book describes in first person the authors experiences, growing up Muslim and gay in Pakistan....but beyond that, it also includes striking commentary on what it means to be "gay" in North America, from another point of view, and a very educated one at that. I enjoyed the writing, and read the book at one (very long) sitting...couldnt put it down...it is a bit specialized, though, but a must read if you are interested in cross cultural issues
Searng honest account of being gay, Muslim, and omni-exiled.......1997-12-07
Although VERY sexually graphic, this book is an acute analysis of the confusions first of being Pakistani and attracted to males, and then of being a gay Muslim in Anglo North America (New York, Toronto, San Francisco). There are too many adjectives for some tastes, and more will cringe at how the author treats servants and other sex objects. He is more honest than most of us dare to be--particularly about the marriage he permitted his family back in Pakistan to arrange for him. One friend who accommodates his homosexuality to marriage and family in Pakistan and one who cuts his cultural and family ties to live entirely in a New York gay world provide contrasts of other possible paths and a (rather coldly academic) afterword by the author of ISLAMIC HOMOSEXUALITIES draws out other comparisons of gay Muslim lifeways.
