Book Description
The atmospheres of many stars have chemical compositions that are significantly different from that of the interstellar medium from which they are formed. This symposium considered all kinds of late-type stars showing altered compositions, the carbon stars being simply the best-known of these. All stages of stellar evolution from the main sequence to the ejection of a planetary nebula were considered, with emphasis on the changes that occur on the asymptotic giant branch. The spectroscopic properties of the photospheres and circumstellar envelopes of chemically-peculiar red giant stars, their origins via single-star evolution or mass transfer in binary systems, and the methods currently used to study them were all discussed in detail. This volume includes the full texts of papers given orally at the symposium and abstracts of the posters.

Book Description
This CD-ROM provides the facts, abstracts and figures needed to build environmental models together with information on the environmental effects of chemical substances. The data has been rigorously selected from scientific journals covering 25 years. Environmental models included cover a wide range of topics, including eutrophication, dispersion of chemical compounds, growth and competition of different organisms as well as models which describe global environmental cycles.
Ecotoxicological information on substances includes the water concentrations at which aquatic organisms are affected by the chemical compounds. These concentrations are used in the regulation of releases and for calculating safe concentration levels in the environment. The growth of environmental toxicological data and the growth of different types of environmental models has been a major new development in this field.
ECOTOX: Ecological Modelling and Ecotoxicology presents ecotoxicological information about more than 2000 chemical substances, including such data as growth parameters, lethal concentrations (LC50), emissions, degradation of chemical substances, background concentrations, concentration factors, biological effects, octanol/water partition coefficients, excretion and uptake rates, emissions and composition of living organisms. Accompanying this information are the constants and equations to be used in environmental models, and abstracts from scientific journals to give an explanation concerning the scope of the data.
All this information is directed towards environmental modelling, administration of environmental regulations, scientific models, environmental policy making and environmental impact assessment.

Book Description
The goal of this book is to teach computational scientists how to develop tailored, flexible, and human-efficient working environments built from small programs (scripts) written in the easy-to-learn, high-level language Python. The focus is on examples and applications of relevance to computational scientists: gluing existing applications and tools, e.g. for automating simulation, data analysis, and visualization; steering simulations and computational experiments; equipping old programs with graphical user interfaces; making computational Web applications; and creating interactive interfaces with a Maple/Matlab-like syntax to numerical applications in C/C++ or Fortran. In short, scripting with Python makes you much more productive, increases the reliability of your scientific work and lets you have more fun - on Unix, Windows and Macintosh. All the tools and examples in this book are open source codes. The third edition is compatible with the new NumPy implementation and features updated information, correction of errors, and improved associated software tools.
Customer Reviews:
strong computational emphasis.......2006-11-13
Langtangen's emphasis here is on a reader who comes from a strong background in engineering or science, and is familiar with common computational ideas and has done some programming, but not necessarily in Python. The typical book on Python is aimed at a general programming reader, and the examples in such a book usually are quite elementary, from a computational viewpoint.
The merit of Langtangen's book is that he gets into a lot of computational ideas. This is not a trivial book. Aspects like parsing data in files, connecting to local and remote hosts, and interacting with programs written in other languages are covered. For the latter, the important cases of Fortran and C programs are explained. The choices of these languages is deliberate. In science and engineering, they are the dominant languages for raw computation. And you are likely to have legacy code written in these, that you cannot abandon while using Python.
Great Suppliment to Numerical methods.......2006-07-25
When I first got ahold of this book I had just finished learning all the gory details of good numerical codes. But when developing tests for simple cases I found that development went way too slow, so someone suggested I learn Python. This book provides a great demonstration of how python can supplement your existing codes. Either by organizing the tests, formatting output, or just adding pretty interfaces.
This book contains a lot of the necessary extras that a scientist or engineer must do to get his work going or finished, which is too pedantic to be taught in most courses. It shows the power of Python over some other scripting languages for this purpose. It is definitely one of the best references on my book shelf.
Python for Science Academics and Engineers, NOT programmers.......2005-06-03
I bought this book as an experienced programmer and Unix user expecting more of a "Numerical Recepies in Python" emphasis on the efficient implementation of algorithms which happen to be in Python. I should have paid more attention to the description.
This book is really more of a "Grad Student's Guide to Everyday Python Usage". I imagine it would be very valuable to a mathematics Grad student without too much programming or shell experience, looking for an alternative to Matlab. However, there is very little "Computational Science" in this book. Do NOT expect a cookbook of high performance algorithm implementations.
The book is a very verbose 700+ pages, all in an unexciting academic LaTeX format. The author works through idiom after idiom for accomplishing different tasks in fairly stand-alone sub-sections without much of a feeling of conceptual "flow" between them. It sort of feels like reading through the author's personal lab notes that he took everytime he learned a new language feature or trick.
If you are an experienced programmer, you will quickly get impatient with the verbose presentation that emphasizes idioms and examples instead of fundamental concepts and syntax reference tables. But, if you are an experienced programmer, you are not the target audience for this book.
Braddock Gaskill
Convincing demonstration of Python's value in science.......2004-10-15
The author has 2 main goals:
1) To improve the productivity of scientists familiar with specific software systems (especially Matlab, Maple, and Mathematica) by teaching them to "glue" applications together.
2) To advocate Python as the preferred "glue" language. In his own words, "I hope to convince computational scientists having experience with Perl that Python is a preferable alternative, especially for large long-term projects."
He has certainly done a creditable job. As an expert in computational differential equations, he neglects neither efficiency nor correctness, while stressing both simplicity and reliability. In this sense, he has done a great service to the Python community.
The question is: What justifies the purchase of his book?
The answer is: Chapters 4, 9, and 10.
Contents:
1. Introduction--26pp
Very convincing arguments.
2. Getting Started With Python Scripting--38pp
Interesting examples.
3. Basic Python--56pp
A too-quick tutorial. Go to python dot org instead.
4. Numerical Computing in Python--48pp
Stellar explanations of vectorized array operations.
5. Combining Python with Fortran, C, and C++--36pp
Details use of Fortran2Py and SWIG. Mentions many alternatives.
6. Introduction to GUI Programming--70pp
Useful examples of Tkinter/pmw widgets.
7. Web Interfaces and CGI Programming--24pp
Good source of ideas.
8. Advanced Python--132pp
Deep and extensive. Includes: option parsing, regular expressions, data persistence and compression, object-oriented programming, exceptions, generic programming, efficiency.
9. Fortran Programming with NumPy Arrays--32pp
All about efficiency and re-use.
10. C and C++ Programming with NumPy Arrays--40pp
More about efficiency. NumPy C API, C++ objects, and SCXX.
11. More Advanced GUI Programming--73pp
Tedious discussion of both Web and standalone GUIs. BLT, canvas, cgi.
12. Tools and Examples--70pp
Excellent examples of PDE solvers, with a powerful GUI, but quite long and tedious.
A. Setting up the Required Software Environment--16pp
Wonderfully specific installation instructions!
B. Elements of Software Engineering--50pp
Python's strength! Very practical advice on modularity, documentation, coding style, regression-testing, version-control.
Strengths:
+ Downloadable py4cs package, esp. numpytools module
+ Great advice everywhere, e.g. CGI checklist, Pythonic programming, and trouble-shooting.
+ Concrete evidence for most assertions.
+ Very attractive presentation. Sturdy, high-quality cover, binding and pages. Brief, elegant code fragments (except in Chapter 12). Readable prose. No wasted space.
+ Available as 5MB pdf file, after purchase of hardcopy. Very nice.
+ Slides, installation instructions, and errata also at web site. Very professional.
My peeves:
- Not enough tables to be a useful manual.
- On p.428(#7) he points out that handling a raised exception is very slow. However, when I time his example with a positive argument, the try-except version is 20% faster (b/c the if clause is skipped), so he is actually giving bad advice for the general case. Luckily, he contradicts himself later, on page 685: "Exceptions should be used instead of if-else tests." The best advice: Avoid common exceptions in inner loops.
- The 10-page index is not as great as it at first seems. (See Martelli's Python in a Nutshell for a better one.)
- Pure interface functions should 'raise NotImplementedError', rather than 'return'.
- Exceptions should never be trapped mindlessly with 'except:'. That would hide your own SyntaxErrors!
- Too many exercises. (It's published as a textbook.) Since there are no answers, the exercises are useless for non-students. (See Lutz's Learning Python for effective exercises with answers.)
Overall rating:
This contains the best information on numerical programming in Python that I've seen. Though expensive, it could easily be your only Python book, given the excellent online documenation already available.
Book Description
Essays about the French and their culture, written during World War I.
Customer Reviews:
Good book, poor print quality.......2007-07-27
It's important to know that this edition (Publisher: Kessinger Publishing, LLC (April 10, 2007)) is a bound photocopy. That is, it has an ordinary softcover binding, but most of the pages are blurry photocopies of the original edition. (All of this is explained in a note at the start of the book, but is not mentioned in the ordering information.)
The background of the pages is dark, dotted gray and the print is not clear. Many of the pages also have underlining and notes (that is, the original pages that were photocopied have these marks). The dark gray background affects about three fourths of the pages; perhaps half the pages are marked with underlines or comments.
Needless to say, all of this affects the book's value. Most of the book is physically hard to read because of these problems, which are not (currently) mentioned in the book's description information.
My one star is for the physical problems with this particular edition, not the contents of the book itself. (Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't have any way to differentiate between them.) The book is hard to find and people who are interested in it may well be willing to put up with the ugly physical presentation in order to get an affordable copy, but you should be informed before you buy it that for reading purposes this isn't any better than a bad fax or photocopy of a real book.
A good primer on French culture........2006-02-28
Edith Wharton was a very observant writer and a great novelist. Her observations on the French in most cases are right on target. However, people traveling to France for work or pleasure need to understand that she is writing about a France in the early part of the 20th centur before and during World War I. When a person writes about a culture there observations only pertain to that particular time and that particular place. Another, thing to rember she is also writes about upper-class french life, which is a problem I find with almost all books on the French. Other then those two critices this is a very entertaining and insightful book on the French.
On parting coment, remeber that when someone writes about a diffrent culture they are using generalizations that may be true of the culture but not everyone in it.
Fine introduction........1997-10-07
This delightful little volume is a compilation of articles written for American troops bound for France in World War One. While their effect on the average doughboy may be questionable, they give a powerful and invaluable insight into one of the most perceptive minds of the age.
Wharton, in her most engaging and always readable style, discusses First Impressions, and examines issues of Reverence, Taste, Intellectual Honesty, and Continuity, and, in her essay on the New Frenchwoman, reveals perhaps more about herself than her subjects.
Highly recommended as a fine introduction to the author.
(The numerical rating above is an ineradicable default setting within the format of the site. This reviewer does nor employ numerical ratings).

Book Description
For almost twenty years, two men from Georgia dominated the Russians and its empire: Stalin and Beria, as head of what was to become the KGB. This book is a memoir of the daily life of these two men who sent millions to their graves. It vividly paints Stalin’s increasingly psychotic nature, but also the incomprehensible loyalty that Stalin inspired among women including the author’s mother. It contains Sergo’s own fascinating anecdotes, among them, an account of the time he was chased by Svetlana, Stalin’s nymphomaniac daughter. Upon Stalin’s mysterious death, Beria dramatically lost the struggle for power with Khrushchev, a Russian, who murdered him with the aid of his fellow politburo members. More than any book currently available, this extraordinary document shows what it was like to grow up at the top in a duplicitous and increasingly violent atmosphere.
Customer Reviews:
the good son white-washes the crimes of the father.......2002-03-12
If I didn't know so much already, I would have gone away thinking
Beria was a great moderating influence on the most bloodthirsty
government of the 20th Century. But then I recall he was the very top man of the terror organization of this government; that requires volumes to record it's crimes and victims. Sergo is a good son, and could teach our liars in D.C. a thing or two about spin!
Nevertheless, this book is fascinating reading.

Book Description
Faced with fascism, communism, and the 1956 Revolution, Csaba Teglas responded with ingenuity and hope. In Budapest Exit, he tells the story of his twenty-year quest for freedom.
Teglas rummaged the scrap heap of World War II for anything he could sell to get food money for his family. The income from selling bits of rubber and ball bearings was often the family's only sustenance. Teglas and his family and friends lived in constant fear; some were even subjected to communist jails and torture chambers.
Teglas protested, sometimes quietly, sometimes more vocally, against the Soviet and communist presence in Hungary. During the 1956 revolution, he became more involved in the opposition. When it became clear that the revolutionaries would not succeed, he knew he had to leave. Teglas recounts his dramatic escape through the heavily guarded Iron Curtain and his subsequent journey to North America, where life as an immigrant presented new challenges.
This memoir is Csaba Teglas's personal story of his youth, told from the point of view of a man with sons of his own. He found in America the freedom for which he had been searching, but he has raised his American sons to remain proud of their Hungarian heritage.
Customer Reviews:
What it was like living under Communism........1999-05-20
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this first-hand account of a young boy growing up first under the Nazis and then the Communists. Mr. Teglas tells his story with incite and humor and I marvel at the spirit of his countrymen during these harrowing times. We, lucky to be born and brought up in the United States, simply have no idea what it would be like to live under oppression. "Budapest Exit" paints a vivid picture of a life our children hopefully will never know.
Growing up in Hungry with bombs, bullets and rebellion.......1999-01-18
Budapest Exit. A Memoir of Fascism, Communism, and Freedom.
This book answers the question,"How would Huck Finn have survived through war, bombings, occupation, revolutions and an escape to freedom". Csaba Teglas is the Finn like story teller in thes autobiographical history/survival story. Teglas, born in 1930, counterpoints his growing up in Hungary with the life of his two sons in a suburb of New York City. His descriptions of family, friends, places, experiences and events are examined in the historical perspective of bombs, bullets and hunger. At 26 Teglas escaped to freedom. A freedom without money, language or a marketable job skill. Read the book and find out how he used the traits honed under fascism and communism to build a life in Canada and the United States.
Mr. Teglas Has written a timeless story of a youth triumphing over adversity. This is and uplifting book which gives a powerful lesson of what can be accomplished if one has grit and determination.
I give this book 5 Stars

Book Description
The Man Who Was Dorian Gray tells the story of John Gray: a working class boy whose passionate friendship with Oscar Wilde made his name as the reputed model for Wilde's scandalous novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray. Noted Wilde scholar Jerusha McCormack traces Gray's life, from decadent poet to dedicated priest, whose first work was in the Edinburgh slums. Gray's shifting relationships with Wilde and, later, with his lifelong companion, André Raffalovich, provide us with fascinating insights into fin de siècle literary society and the emerging gay culture of the period.]
