As a college Accounting student I found this book extremely useful in explaining the US tax laws in a way I could easily understand. Many "real-life" examples make the reading meaningful.

Visibility is key to the new social contract........2003-08-11

Today's reality certainly does require a strong dose of self-assessment. And the sad truth is that women especially find it harder to land a job after being "downsized." Sadly, women also show far too much humility about their talents and skills. If you want people to value your skills, you must first show that you value yourself -- by making sure your accomplishments are visible to targeted audiences beyond a resume and job-seeking letter. Potential employers have to know who you are, what you have accomplished and why they should put you on their team! That often takes visibility outside the traditional marketplace and into the social contract of targeted community activities. Then your activities need to be promoted loudly to the right audience. This is one of the most useful books for someone who is facing redeployment,downsizing, being laid off or whatever the current euphemism is these days for losing your job. It's also handy for finding a new job for yourself when you are dissatisfied with your current situation.

The book title says it all: today, you MUST view yourself as self-employed to control your career path. No one will do that for you. The heady days of the Dot-Coms and IT boom, when headhunters stopped taking corporate clients and couldn't find enough people to fill positions have evaporated almost overnight. Now those courted employees are being laid off and must once again, pound the pavement. Don't suffer a rude awakening. After the period when you feel anger and loss (understandable) you need to take control and steer your own career. This book is absolutely invaluable to help you do that, and to get over the nasty shock of loss, betrayal, feeling of failure, whatever you are experiencing from a temporary lull in your personal path.

This is not a how-to book. It's about changing your attitude and habits permanently to protect yourself in the corporate world, no matter what the climate.

Don't forget to re-read it from time to time, to remind yourself of what you need to do to stay on course. This is one of the best books on the subject and I think far, far more than "What Color is your Parachute."

A well written book interspersing genuine letters from her family with observations and historical details provided by the author. It is interesting from a "slice of life" perspective but also for the historical record of the Civil War as recorded by those actually experiencing it. It should especially captivate those living in Kentucky and familiar with the towns and families discussed.

This absorbing book, which consists mostly of the actual letters of the Clay family, draws the reader in as well as any fictional account ever could. Few of the letter writers actually see combat, so the book is largely an account of ordinary life against the backdrop of the war. Though some letters offer insight into the political realities and trade-offs of the period, it is the intimate details of everyday life and human relations that fascinate. Mary Clay is never intrusive in her comments that bridge and sometimes explain the letters.

A very precise and serious study of B.V.Savinkov ' life........1999-05-22

For being Boris V.Savinkov' nephew,I must say that the reading of Mr.R.Spence Book has been more than a surprise to me.For once somebody took the challenge to bring out of the shade the rather stange character of this "lost hero".Through the reading of "Renegade from the left" one can understand the tumultuous life of Boris V.Savinkov and its implications in history.The precision of this monograph shows how seriouly the historical research has been conducted,for there is not a single fact wich is not bound to a file location.Reading this book I had the chance to descover who my uncle was and his "performance" in history did amazed me.As I have recently started a genealogical and historical research about all the members of my family,this book helps me a lot .Thank you to Mr R.Spence and to the East Europeen Monograph edition!!!

Getting it Sideways By Wayne Bonkosky.......2004-02-04

I thoroughly enjoyed this account of the adventures of a man who can talk intelligently about American History and a motorcycle engine in the same breath. He tells of his two year stint in the U.S. Marine Corps that shocked him into manhood and talks about his experiences with recreational drugs in the "60's". I especially enjoyed his adventures with the "Mountaineers" motorcycle club that he has been a member of for many years. This is a memior of an obviously well read introspective man who can write beautiful poetry in one chapter and tell darn good jokes in the next. It's a good read.

I really enjoyed reading and going on great adventures with Wayne, He's a very good communicater,and he has lead an interesting life. I especially enjoyed the touching moments when his father says good-bye and why wayne decided that hunting wasn't such great fun.
