          Book Description

Although transits of planets across the Sun are rare (only Mercury and Venus orbit the Sun closer than us, and so can transit the Sun's disc) amateur astronomers can observe, record and image other kinds of transit, which are very much more frequent. Transit is in two parts, the first telling the fascinating story of the early scientific expeditions to observe transits. The second part is for practical observers, and explains how to observe transits of all sorts - even transits of aircraft as they fly between the observer and the Sun!

            Book Description

Graphite furnace AAS is one of the most widely used techniques for elemental ultratrace determinations, but other than 20 years ago it is a method for routine applications and no longer for research purposes. The laboratory guide therefore is written predominantly for the technician who has to provide reliable, accurate and well validated and documented data in an environment of increased pressure on fast and economical analysis. In 6 chapters the book provides a profound but practical inside into the physical and technical background of the technique and its perfect use for the daily routine. One focus is to always keep the aim of the analysis in mind while developing a method and to avoid pitfalls on the way to an automated procedure. The critical questions and dialogues of a laboratory manager and her application chemist guide the reader from sample pretreatment via calibration and validation of the instrument to the accessories and software packages of modern graphite furnace AAS. The author has been involved in basic and application research as well as in user training courses and technical support for almost 2 decades. Chapter 7 of the laboratory guide is therefore an "exciting voyage through the world of matrices and challanges". In this chapter model analyses from the field of environmental, biological and industrial analyses are discussed. These are performed with the most recent instrumentation- simultaneous GFAAS- and accessories. Besides the technician, the laboratory manager as well may wish to follow the advice of her or his clever colleague in the book: open the "laboratory guide" if you think you need advice!

5 out of 5 stars Great value for the price.......2007-08-02

Let's face it, there are better editions of Dickens out there. You get what you pay for. This is not a top of the line leather edition. For the price, though, you can't beat it. It is what it is, a reasonably priced leather edition of four of his novels. At five dollars apiece, the price can not be beat.

              1 out of 5 stars Pretentious.......2007-06-07

Buying books because they look good on your shelf is pretentious and phony - and this book capitalizes on that. I got this as a gift and was amazed when I read it at the number of typos in it. There is simply no way this collection was proofed by an editor - that or the editing company is one of the worst in the world.

Buy these fantastic books, but not this edition, unless you just want people to think you read Dickens.

2 out of 5 stars If nothing else, it looks good on your bookshelf........2007-03-13

You would do better off buying these books individually from a different publisher.
It sounds impressive, leather bound, gilded edges, but it is very cheaply done. On the plus side, it does have a ribbon book mark so you don't have to buy your own.
But this book was poorly edited, filled with needless typos, and with all four of these books available from numerous other publishers, I would suggest to just buy it from them.

              5 out of 5 stars Loved it,.......2006-02-12

I'm a big fan of long drawn out novles. I've always been a fan of Dickens. This book has on eof my favorite stories by his pen: Great Expectations. His style is very personal I found it a lot like Tolkien. His ability to tell a good tale is clear as the reader becomes part of the story. Very nice volume and worth the time and money in my opinion.

              2 out of 5 stars Lousy Binding.......2005-12-20

I've read all but "A Christmas Carol" in this edition. I've found several typos. Moreover, the binding is becoming unglued. I estimate by the time I finish "A Christmas Carol" the binding will be totally exposed. I value permanent books (otherwise I would buy paperbacks). I suggest anyone who enjoys Dickens buy a better edition.

Benjamin Perkins thought he had his hands full taking care of his family's specialty soap store and keeping his quirky clan in line and out of trouble. But he's about to learn that when it comes to murder, there's no such thing as a clean getaway.

5 out of 5 stars Fast read; good cozy.......2006-11-23

I enjoyed this book. The characters are not well developed, but they are pleasant to read about.

3 out of 5 stars Light Cozy Read.......2006-09-21

In the 1st book in the Soapmaking Mystery series, we are introduced to Benjamin Perkins, one member of the large Perkins clan who runs a specialty soap shop in North Carolina. All seven siblings work together in the shop, Where There's Soap, and support each other in the different stages of their lives. Ben, like several of his siblings, is single and finding it difficult to find love. But nothing quite compares to the disastrous love life of his sister, Louisa, whose boyfriend is found murdered on the back steps of their soap shop! The police immediately suspect Louisa, as she had recently discovered her boyfriend, Jerry Sanger, was unfaithful to her with several other local women. Led by their mother, the Perkins family beseeches Ben to poke around in the case, and to assist in their investigation. He investigates possible suspects along with his occasional date and police detective friend, Molly Wilkes, and also with his new potential love interest and lawyer, Kelly Sheer. Working with the help of the two women in his life, Ben works hard to discover the killer before his beloved sister is locked up for good.

I have read and really enjoyed the candlemaking mystery series that is also written by this author, and was excited to try this one as well. I was disappointed in the first installment, however, and found that it didn't have the same flow or easy dialogue as I found in that series. I found a lot of the back and forth dialogue between the Perkins siblings to be a bit strange and distracting, and found Ben to be a somewhat effeminate character. I think the series has potential, however, and will read the next installment before deciding whether to continue with future books or not. If you like cozy mysteries, I would definitely try the candlemaking mysteries by this author starting with the book, At Wick's End.

The next book in the Soapmaking Mystery series is called "A Pour Way to Die". Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Worst mystery I've read in years........2006-07-29

This book has got to be the worst-written mystery ever. The plot itself is so-so (once you get past the idea that a small town has three soap stores in it), but the characters are one-dimensional and their relationships with each other are paint-by-number. Every so often the author gives a perfunctory nod to the fact that it's supposed to be a mystery and mentions the crime or the policewoman (for whom the narrator clearly has zero respect, despite their on-again off-again relationship). I'm not even going to give this book to my mother to read. I couldn't bear for her to waste her time reading it.

4 out of 5 stars No bubbles in this soap! .......2006-06-23

Thinking this to be another of the candle-shop books, I picked it up. Oh, well. It was a fun read anyway. To be sure, I did raise an eyebrow at the mention of the candle shop, but since it was an anonymous mention, I didn't think all that much of it.

Ben Perkins, being the oldest son of a warm and loving family is quite a different character from the orphan of the candle-shop, in my opinion, and the details of the shop and the soap-making are fascinating. Who wouldn't want to know all the whys and wherefores involved if, in the course of your daily job, you stumbled over the very dead and somewhat mis-treated corpse of one of the suppliers to your business? Especially if that supplier had been dating your sister? Seems reasonable to me.

All the red herrings were firmly in place, with a lot of interesting new folks yet to meet in this new series by Tim Myers. One thing is absolutely for certain, however. Tim creates the most appealing, clever and sometimes humorous names and concepts (or themes) for stores and businesses that I've come across in some time. He makes Harper's Landing into a very comfy place to live and work.

Ben's widowed Mom is a tad pushy, but after raising seven kids, I guess she's entitled to be just that. But still, I think she's pushed them all in the right direction, even if only two of them are married so far. Let's see, that leaves at least five more books to come - one in which to get each sibling a mate - oh! and then two more, so that Mom and Grandpa (who didn't appear here) can acquire `friends' of their own.

The townsfolk are an interesting bunch, as well. The next book in the series will be along in a couple of months, and I'll be watching for it.

2 out of 5 stars The publisher fell for this?.......2006-04-07

Harrison Black is an orphan; Ben Perkins is part of a large extended family. There's the difference between this series and the candlemaking one. Both guys are single 30-somethings who give artsy-craftsy lessons for a living - in the same town! Ben appears to be slightly huskier, but I cannot get a distinct, separate picture of each. Sorry, but it was really tough for me to buy into this series as more than a weak copy of the other. A strange differentiation occurs here in that Ben's case is covered by the local policewoman, whereas Harrison's are investigated by the Sheriff's Office.
              SPOILER ALERT ...
The culprit here turned out to be roughly the same as in Harrison's latest, with an age/gender change: Instead of an older male "minding the shop for absent owner" we get a younger female "minding the shop for absent owners." How close is that!

I put the book down for a moment, shook my head, and mumbled, "The author shouldn't have done that!" when Ben's brother says he wants to get home to read the new "mystery about a candle shop" (p. 192). I wondered whether there was an editor at all after reading the following (p. 211): " ... all the people I'd put through the ringer [sic] over this case."

I will buy the next Harrison Black installment. If there is a sequel to this one, I would read it only as a library book; wouldn't even be worth buying a cheap used copy for something so insultingly derivative. I give it two stars because it could stand on its own without the other series, though not as well.

-- the story of his life. I grew up small-town in the 50's when communists had horns. These people's childhoods were, compared to mine, like something from another planet. I didn't meet a socialist until I went to college. Looking back:
              1. the risk of internal communist subversion causing an American communist revolution was equal to today's risk of America becoming a moslem state under sharia -- nil. However the USSR was a threat and terrorism is a threat.
              2. the Communist Party USA allowed itself to become merely an arm of Soviet policy
              3. the people in this book and their parents suffered from thuggish and illegal harassment from the US government
              4. but I am very relieved that their political philosophy lost.

Being idealogs, they avoided any disconfirmatory facts. They were shocked in 1956 when Khrushchev told them that Stalin was a Bad Guy.

Most of the narrators look back with pride and wistfulness. Missing is any apology for supporting a system that caused mass murder, mass starvation, and Gulags.

1 out of 5 stars A testimony to communist niavete.......2001-02-08

I was assigned this book by an admittedly socialist professor. Perhaps she hoped it would open my eyes to "the people's glorious revolution." In fact, it confirmed in my mind that communists are seriously deluded people. The writers in this book lament their rejection by middle class Americans, seemingly oblivious to the fact that one of the major tenants of communism is the violent destruction of the middle class (I say "violent" because I doubt the middle class would simply relinquish its status when "the glorious revolution occurs). They also bemoan that their first ammendment rights were ignored. The first ammendment was wirtten to allow speech to improve the system. No nation has ever or will ever tolerate speech advocating the destruction of itself and the massacre of its citizens. They should get used to it anyway, as whenever a communist regime takes hold the first thing it does is eliminate free speech. Overall, this book is a worthless collection of narcissistic, revolutionary ramblings, myopic pseudo-history and whining, with no real educational merit at all.

This is a unique anthology of memoirs of kids who grew up in the 40's and 50's, in the "pink" shadow of the American Communist Party. Most of the nearly fifty contributors of this book are children of Eastern Jewish immigrants. Here are their fascinating memories: Joyous ones of Pioneer Camp, The Daily Worker, public rallies in support of women, workers, minorities, and disarmament. Fearful recollections of the Rosenberg executions, McCartyism, clandestine CP meetings, FBI surveillance, and the dreaded knock on the door in the middle of the night. Disillusioned remembrances of Khrushchev's denouncement of Stalin and the devastating revelation that "Uncle Joe" and the "Workers' Paradise" of the USSR were not what American Communists naively believed. Few of these writers still belong to the CP. A small number speak resentfully of parents who put the Party before family, exposing their children to bigotry and violence or to the anxiety and deprivation of a life "underground". The Party's over. But the great majority of these writers proudly retain their strong leftist values and ideals, and continue to practice the social activism instilled during childhood. This book gives a human and humane dimension to a misled but often wrongfully vilified American political movement.

5 out of 5 stars An extraordinary, insightful and original book........1999-10-09

This highly orginal book did not get the press it deserved when it was first published. It is a collection of brief, yet moving reminiscences written by "red diaper babies" whose parents had a connection -- some more than others -- with the "Movement". It is a definite "must read" for anyone who grew up in the fifties -- whether or not he or she wore red, pink or any other shade of diaper! -- whose parents did not share the prevailing political opinions of the times.

                Book Description

In 1856 J. C. Terrell, a young lawyer in his twenties, stepped off a stagecoach in Fort Worth, intending to travel on to California. Instead, he ran into an old classmate, Dabney C. Dade, who convinced him to establish a practice in Fort Worth, a city then in its infancy.

In 1906 Terrell wrote his memories of those early days. His choice of subject matter was eclectic. He wrote of important settlers--E. M. Daggett and M. T. Johnson--and killing hogs, patriotism in the schools, and a Confederate reunion. His writing clearly reflects the attitudes and mores of the turn-of-the-century. In an afterword written for this reprint edition, Judge Steve King writes, "Parts of our past are well worth saving--to learn from and to emulate. Other parts are worth preserving in works like this--perhaps more to study, remember, and guard against their return."

Terrell's reminiscences give us the only picture of Fort Worth in its first days written by someone who lived the city's history. They also give a clear picture of the author. What he wrote of Daggett and Johnson might well be said of Terrell: "Both were grand men, physically, morally, and mentally. Neither were exemplary or saintly, yet both to us old settlers were veritable heroes."
