Book Description
The early twentieth century saw the replacement of the Nebular Hypothesis with the Chamberlin-Moulton theory that the solar system resulted from the encounter of the Sun with a passing star. Fruitful Encounters follows the eventual refutation of the encounter theory and the subsequent revival of a modernized Nebular Hypothesis. Professor Brush also discusses the role of findings from the Apollo space program, especially the analysis of lunar samples, culminating in the establishment of the "giant impact" theory of the Moon's origin in the 1980s.

Masterful Volume in a Trilogy on Modern Physics.......2005-05-26
This is an outstanding volume by a superb historian of science. Is is the third volume in a trilogy entitled, "A History of Modern Planetary Physics." While there is considerably more in "Fruitful Encounters: The Origins of the Solar System and of the Moon from Chamberlin to Apollo" than the science accruing from Project Apollo, that was my major interest in reading the book. In "Fruitful Encounters" Stephen G. Brush of the University of Maryland spends considerable effort discussing the scientific return from Apollo during the 1960s and 1970s. Placing the history of lunar science into a broad continuum from the eighteenth to the twentieth century he explores the evolution of scientific thinking about the origins of the solar system and the evolution of its bodies. As historian Ronald E. Doel commented, "one of Brush's pursuits over the years has been to employ the history of nineteenth and twentieth century physical science to assess the adequacy of Kuhnian, Popperian, Lakatosian theories of science to evaluate the production of scientific knowledge, and Brush turns to these issues again here. He is particularly effective in pointing to historical example that refute Lakatos's claims that scientists never falsify a theory before the emergence of a better theoretical alternative" (Ronald E. Doel, "Theories and Origins of Planetary Physics," Isis 90 (September 1999): 563-68).
Brush's arguments focus on the longterm development of theory and its interaction with scientific inquiry. As such, it is a model of how such issues as lunar science accomplished with Apollo missions might be incorporated into larger history of science.
This is an outstanding work for anyone seeking to understand the evolution of scientific understanding about the Solar System, and the place of the Moon landing program in the larger research setting. Highly recommended.

Book Description
edited by Martha V. Gottron
Chemical engineering has been one of the major high-tech growth industries of the post-World War II period, and one of the few in which U.S. companies have retained an international advantage over their competitors. As an engineer and entrepreneur, Ralph Landau played a large role in this success story.
Uncaging Animal Spirits collects all of Landau's major papers from the last thirty years, covering his scientific discoveries, his views on innovation and entrepreneurship, his reflections on his own field of chemical engineering, and his research on the global marketplace, and on the relation of technology, innovation, and the economy. The emphasis throughout is on Landau's view of the status of entrepreneurship in the United States, as tempered by his experience in an international business and his many attempts to get the federal government to think seriously about its role in creating a reasonable playing field for entrepreneurs.
As Landau developed his business, he became increasingly concerned about the extent to which government officials misunderstood (or didn't care about) the needs of technology-based industries and the relationship between technology and economic growth. When he sold his company in the early 1980s, Landau took on the task of educating himself in economic theory and educating economists, policy makers, and the government about this crucial relationship. He has established centers at Stanford and Harvard to focus attention on issues of technology and the economy.

Book Description
Bats are the only true flying mammals and account for about a quarter of all mammal species. This book covers many aspects of bat biology, including their evolutionary origins, roles in ecosystems, reproductive biology, foraging behaviour, hibernation, and genetics. The subject of fruit eating bats of the old world tropics are discussed. The coverage is international, and with contributors from nine countries the diversity of current bat research, as well as the diversity of the bats themselves, is evident.

Customer Reviews:
Not so Light .......2005-12-27
I purchased this book because the Broadway production of the title story had proved so enchanting. Don't be mistaken, though. The play bears little resemblance to the story. The story tries so hard to be symbolic and airy that the characters become cardboard symbols and I did not find myself caring much for any of them. The story may have proved more engaging had I not been expecting beauty and life to match what I had seen onstage, but as it was, I couldn't bring myself to read the rest of the stories.
Italy Rendered Dull.......2005-07-31
Apparently highly regarded as a writer, Elizabeth Spencer's "The Light in the Piazza and Other Italian Tales" left me cold. The title story, recently made into a Tony Award winning musical is the tale of an American woman and her daughter vacationing in Italy. There, daughter Clara meets and falls in love with local Florentine, Fabrizio. However, what the besotted Fabrizio doesn't know is that the beautiful Clara is mentally challenged, having suffered a childhood injury to the head. Should mom reveal her daughter's handicap to Fabrizio and his family? This is the question around which the novella revolves. I won't reveal the ending. However, what could have been a poignant tale of maternal love and responsibility becomes a comedy of manners examining the national differences between Americans and Italians. To me the portrayals of both groups were stereotypical. This story was the best of the lot. The others were boring beyond words. In fact I did something I rarely do. I put the book down three quarters of the way through. A waste of reading time. I plan on avoiding the musical.
Drifting lives, drifting stories.......2005-07-22
With a healthy anticipation of seeing the New York theatre production of "The Light in the Piazza" I decided to orient myself with Elizabeth Spencer's story of the same name. After finishing this tale, I went on to read the others.
"The Light in the Piazza" is perhaps the most defined of the collection and one gets an instant taste of Ms. Spencer's writing and the kinds of characters she prefers. Women are central in all of them, no less Margaret Johnson in "Light". The author's women command attention as they maneuver the action around them. Manipulation is an even better word. All of these collected stories begin somewhere in mid-sentence and finish not much farther along. Enigmatic, troubled, wistful and "vagabondish", Ms. Spencer's men and women prefer the waft of an Italian breeze to any set action or direction. The vignettes are more or less satisfying, if only for the time that one spends with them. "Knights and Dragons", the longest of the stories, is an aimless sojourn but the final one, "the Cousins", is second only as a success to the title tale.
Elizabeth Spencer has put together a nice group of stories. Even though her writing is mostly even and descriptive, some of her offerings end up being less so, though her depictions of Italy are true to form. Still, the bookend chapters are worth the read.
Italy of 50 years ago.......2005-07-14
The author, born in Mississippi, brings a Southern sensibility to these stories. She has written a series of short stories about Southern women living and visiting in Italy in the 1950's. Ms. Spencer writes beautifully, and her stories are never overly sentimental or superficial. They ring true. Italian words are sprinkled throughout the text which adds to the overall effect.
I found the stories a little "dated" though. These women are trapped here in an era of proper white gloves, cocktail parties and long cigarette holders. The 1950's was a rather repressive time for women, and in many of these stories we find women struggling to be in control of their own lives. They have come to Italy to vacation "abroad"; to fulfill a lifelong dream; to work, or to distance themselves from the past.
By far, the best of the stories is "The Light in the Piazza" which has a warmth and appeal that I found missing in most of the others.
deceptively simple.......2005-07-12
After watching the Tony Award show this year I was curious about Elizabeth Spencer, a Southern writer whom I had not heard of before the show. I have just finished reading her novella "Light in the Piazza" (haven't seen the touted play yet)and it was a memorable read. It starts out like a fairy tale---you don't quite know why Mrs. Johnson and her daughter are in Florence, what time period they are in, their background---and you're quickly engaged in a charming romance story. But there's also an undercurrent of tragedy. You discover lies, family strains, an accident in the past. Every character in the story becomes suspect. You start to question every character's motives, possible deceptions (with the exception of Clara, who becomes a symbol of clarity and innocence, as in the Virgin Mary). For the last 30 pages of the story I am nervously living inside Margaret Johnnon's head, worrying about the future of her "simple-minded" daughter Clara.
Elizabeth Spencer is a masterful storyteller, making me ponder what level of control we have in life, how easily we make assumptions about people soley based on appearance, how we can manipulate others and fool ourselves. Her prose is deceptively simple at times. I found myself reading and re-reading many a sentence to decipher the multiple levels of meaning. I closed the book wistfully, wishing for a sequel!

Must read for all interested the education of South Africa.......2004-07-16
"An invaluable book that everyone interested in education system of South Africa must read. Jordan highlights the fact that resistance against the notorious Bantu Education system did not begin during the 1976 Soweto Uprisings. In fact, the Uprising carried on a legacy that began in the early 1950s when a group of 8 teachers resigned from teaching under Bantu Education system. Jordan, was one of those teachers. A historical gem for all the new generation of educators in South Africa and beyond."

The true saga of a southern family maturing with the nation........1999-06-02
A gifted and much-published writer, Frye Gaillard is a descendant of the French Huguenot GAILLARD family which was eminent in antebellum South Carolina and later in Mobile, Alabama. Using cherished family journals and legends as well as public records, the author has lovingly reconstructed the events and the flavor of his ancestors' lives. These people come to life as Frye reveals their characters and personalities. But this is more than the history of one family. The story begins in 1695 and continues to the modern day, with the family participating in many, if not all, of the important historical events of their day. The Gaillards were typical of many southern families, finding themselves at political odds with one another and with their neighbors at various times. As the story unfolds, the reader begins to understand the variety of opinions and convictions of the average southerner of those times. Some attention is given to the family's dependency on slavery, though not as much as one might expect considering the title of the book. Complete with photos and documentation, the book is valuable for those researching the Huguenot and planter families of the Charleston, SC area, but more than that, it is interesting and enlightening reading for anyone interested in American history or in the fabric of a southern family's life.

Book Description
Like the Bouthilliers, the Colberts, the Fouquets, and the Letelliers, the Arnauld family rose to prominence at the end of the sixteenth century by attaching themselves to the king. Their power and influence depended upon absolute loyalty and obedience to the sovereign whose own power they sought to enhance. Dictates of conscience, however, brought all that to an end and put them in conflict with both king and pope. As a result of the religious conversion of Angélique Arnauld early in the seventeenth century, the family eventually adopted a set of religious principles that appeared Calvinist to some ecclesiastical authorities. These "Jansenist" principles were condemned by the papacy and Louis XIV.
The travails of conscience experienced by the Arnauld family, and the resulting religious schism that separated different branches, divided husbands from wives and parents from children. However, neither the historic achievements of individual family members nor the differences of opinion between them could obscure the sense of family solidarity.
The dramatic appeal of this book is underscored by a tumultuous period in French history which coincides with and punctuates the Arnauld family's struggle with the world. We see how this extraordinary family reacted to momentous political and religious developments, as well as the ways in which individual members, by means of their own convictions, helped shape the history of their time.

Book Description
Homo! Queer! Fag! Freak! Pervert!
I heard the names. I looked at my enemies. I yawned. Little did my tormentors know I was long immuned to being singled out for violent verbal and physical abuse. My mother had conditioned me well. This monster began her reign of terror over me when I was only three. Yet, she and the thugs that followed were dismayed to discover that here was one flamboyant freak who didn't crumble or hide away in a closet.
By my freshman year in college in l962, I was already married to the handsome, college rebel, Billy Dragon. He was the first of a long line of sexy, complex, straight men who would make my life heaven and hell for the next fifty years. Strippers, convicts, preachers, priests, Wall Street moguls and wrestlers. I knew them all until September 11, 2001. On that date, I watched the love of my life, Police Officer Devereaux, race into the Twin Towers where he perished before my eyes.

The Survivor.......2005-01-21
Jason Fury represents all that is good within the human soul. He was born gay and had the misfortune of growing up in the deep South where conformity is the rule and in matters of sex, any deviation from the "normal" way of doing it is asking for harassment, ridicule, and isolation. These life defining forces in his life could not diminish his spirit although I am sure that his trust in people has been severely tested throughout his life.
This is the first of his books that I have read but I will surely eventually read them all. "Nights of Fury" is autobiographical and highlights different phases in the life of this talented writer from the terrible growing up years, battling a tyrannical mother and passive father, the taunting that he endured during his formative years in high school, on through his awakening years in college and then to the real world of the work place where gay people were deemed lower than blacks to the bigots that he encountered.
This book will strike a strong chord to anyone, male or female, who live in a society like ours which professes to be virtuous and Christian, yet is capable of treating non-conformist badly. I believe anyone who reads about his experience at East Carolina college will cringe at the hostility that this gentle creature created. The same psychology that besets mobs seems to operate on those who feel compelled to taunt those who are gay or different. We only have to look back to the Nazi era where homosexuals were imprisoned and murdered, or to the Hoover years when the same hysteria existed.
Fury has a natural writing style which flows smoothly and evokes the mood of the setting excellently. It may be that the harsh maturation that he endured has helped him to develop deeper nsights that make his characters so vivid and real. An excellent book. JT
