    Book Description

    Research is an ever-increasing vital feature of academic accounting and finance, but few researchers are ever offered guidance on the research process. Research Method & Methodology in Finance & Accounting is the only book of its kind as it focuses on academic rather than student research. The text provides a clear, well-written guide to research in these subjects. This essential book, for both students and lecturers, has now been fully revised and updated, to include all of the advances made on the subject in the last 10 years.

      Book Description

      `Malcolm Smith's Research Methods in Accounting provides a useful addition to the limited number of books on research methods that are addressed specifically to the area of accounting. For students taking DBA degrees in the area, it is probably an ideal companion' - The European Accounting Review

      Research in accounting is concerned with solving problems, investigating relationships and building a body of knowledge. With this in mind, this book will provide a clear and concise overview of the conduct of applied research studies in accounting.

      It provides the principal building blocks of how to implement research in accounting and related fields.

      This book provides students with:

      - an understanding of contemporary research ideas in accounting, so that readers can identify and define research problems and prepare strategies for their solution;

      - an awareness of alternative research methods, to facilitate the selection of the most appropriate method for addressing particular research questions;

      - an ability to review existing research and to offer critiques of articles published in refereed journals;

      - an appreciation of the ethical constraints on the conduct of accounting research.

      This book will be essential for students and academics in the fields of accounting and management.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars A Must Read For Every starting researcher in accounting.......2004-08-23

      In eleven chapter and 241 pages, Malcolm Smith aims to provide an insider's view of the research process, by focusing on actual choices made in the conduct of accounting research projects, together with a realistic perception of what might go wrong, even with careful planning. The overall aim of the book is to facilitate the conduct of applied research studies in accounting. It takes a practical approach which takes the reader from initiating of the research idea, over developing the conceptual model, identifying theory and literature, developing a specification of hypotheses and collecting and analyzing to the ultimately publishing of the research findings.

      The clearly defined structure and smooth writing style help to convey the message. It is furthermore very accessible due to its broad perspective and practical approach. The reader gets a clear overview of the sequence of steps that need to be undertaken to come to a successful publication. Throughout the book, he is made aware of potential pitfalls that he may encounter, and to some extent how to solve them. Practical examples illustrate the theory, making the whole more understandable. The main contribution the book makes to the reader is that it shows how to identify and define research problems and prepare strategies for their solution, how to review existing research and how to offer critiques of articles. In addition, ethical constraints on the conduct of accounting research are discussed.

      There are however some drawbacks. A choice had to be made between a broad, extensive perspective and a detailed, intensive perspective. The author discusses for example the most frequently used statistical techniques, without really discussing solutions to statistical problems that may occur. Hence, the book may serve as a guideline to (starting) researchers, clarifying the several steps that need to be undertaken. Other, more specific, literature will however be needed to solve problem to concrete problems.

        5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Reading for New Managers.......2004-11-18

        I am a new manager for a very large company. I bought this book to help me deal with the people with whom I used to work and now work for me. It was very helpful in giving many specific situations and how to deal with them. Also, the author was very inspiring. He brought some humor and enlightenment to, what would normally be, very boring reading. A definite must-read for new managers or people considering management.

                    5 out of 5 stars A must-have volume!.......2005-01-25

                    It's been years since I've read aloud from this wonderful anthology to my twin sons who are now 16. But they still remember vibrant, lively selections like "Half a league, half a league, half a league onward ... " (The Charge of the Light Brigade) and "The Ransom of Red Chief" (which they loved but didn't really "get" until they were about 13). I credit this wonderful book with providing truly excellent literature to feed their hungry young brains. This book is part of their current success in school and life! BUY IT for your child or grandchild - or donate it to your local school library!

                    5 out of 5 stars Awesome book! Highly recommended!.......2002-05-24

                    This is a keeper! Your kids will love to have you read aloud from this book. It is a compilation of stories arranged according to age-appropriate listening levels. All are well-known stories from well-known authors. Many stories, particularly the longer ones, are only excerpts; the editor has deliberately done this to whet the listeners' appetite.

                    If you like this book, you will like its companions: More Classics to Read Aloud to Your Children, and Classic Myths to Read Aloud.

                    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for grandparents to give to grandchildren!.......1998-01-29

                    My father gave this book to me to read aloud while we traveled in the car. I have 4 children -with different attention spans -from teenagers to a Kindergartener- they all listened!! I loved that at the beginning of the books it would give us words thay might not understand and definitions. I loved the idea of knowing how long it would take to read a particular story. Classics that I have not read in years and classics that I have never read were included. If you are going on a car trip this book is a must! Great idea for grandparents to give or have around to read when grandchildren come to visit.

                        Book Description

                        Together with Mikhail Gorbachev and Alexander Yakovlev, Eduard Shevardnadze led the dramatic Soviet about-face in the 1980s that ended the Cold War and transformed the international political climate. While Gorbachev and Yakovlev focused on domestic reform, Shevardnadze redirected foreign policy. This major book is the first to take a critical look at the many battles Shevardnadze has fought at home and abroad throughout his remarkable career. This updated edition further assesses the leadership role he continues to play in the turbulent independent state of Georgia.

                        3 out of 5 stars interesting, education, not deep enough.......2003-05-16

                        Shevardnadze is one of the great men of the century(in diplomacy anyway). Unfortunatly he is sandwhiched between the Dobrynin/Groymko periods of the cold war and the more chaotic period of Yeltsin. After all we have forgotten Gorbachev and the period of Glasnost. Is this because the Russians have a propensity to forget them? Its not clear.
                        Nevertheless this is the only book on Mr. Shevardnadze(the only one I could find). SO its an important document. It seems to glossy to me. It seems to not get at the beef, the meat of what was happening from 1980-1990. I wish it detailed the afghanistan ending, I wish it detailed the various new nations created in the breakup of the Soviet empire. I wish it detailed the new voices that came to the fore in eastern europe. I dont think the book answers the question: How did so much happen, so fast? Obviously Shevardnadze was key. But then why arnt we told more about his role in shaping policy throughout the Russian sphere of influence. I feel that the book approaches the topic from a political scientists analytical eyes, disregarding the historical questions. Lacking flair and literary greatness the book is doomed, and yet essential for those who want to learn more about the Gorbachev era.

                        4 out of 5 stars Necessary for the student of any type of Soviet studies.......2000-09-27

                        I bought this book because I am a student of all things Georgian. However, while reading the book, I was constantly impressed how important this book would be for anyone who wants to have even the most basic understanding of Cold War politics or Soviet/Post-soviet studies. The book is a nice synopsis of the events leading to the dismantling of the Soviet empire. Its most obvious flaw is the tiring repetition; Although I usually benefit from repetition as a comprehension tool, this book went overboard, and hearing the same thing repeated for the fifth or sixth time became distracting towards the end.

                        Considering that the jury is "still out" on Shevardnadze and his deeds, especially as president of Georgia, I found the author tended to lean towards a typical Baker/Schultz (and US foreign policy) pro-Shevardnadze conclusion.

                        Minor criticisms aside, I'm glad the author wrote the book, and I glad I read it.

                        5 out of 5 stars excellent analysis of the last Soviet foreign minister........1998-10-13

                        "The Wars of Eduard Shevardnadze" is an excellent description and analysis of the former Soviet foreign minister and his role in bringing an end to the Cold War. The book treats Shevardnadze's background in the Soviet republic of Georgia as well as his current role as the president of Georgia. The book is the only biography of Shevardnadze.

                        Book Description

                        The Georgia Coast is one the most intriguing areas of the United States. A land of sluggish rivers, murky blackwater swamps, and studded with a string of islands, it is the home of a special breed of people. They are as wild, reckless, exciting, beautiful, and contradictory as the land itself. One thing is for sure: both natives and visitors love it. But the story of this land is one that is often known about only in legend and hearsay, in stories and novels, and even in a few dissertations.

                        By focusing on James Hamilton Couper, James Bagwell paints a portrait of the Georgia Coast during the late eighteenth century through the middle of the nineteenth century. Coupers family was originally from Scotland, where the story actually begins, but settled on the Georgia Coast. When James Hamilton Couper was grown, he attended Yale, but returned to make a name for himself and his plantation in politics, plantation management, scientific agriculture, archaeology, and architecture. Bagwell also discusses the role of Couper as a slave owner and slave-life on the plantation.

                        But the book is more than about Couper; he is simply the pivot of the book. The real story here is the Coastal land itself: socially, economically, religiously, and politically. From the colonial days on the coast through the American Civil War, Bagwell has written a compelling story of a most enigmatic land: the Georgia Coast.

                        As a Georgia 'native' and historian with a deep interest in the field, I found this to be a fascinating text. But I would certainly agree that you have to have an interest in the topic--in which case it is well worth buying and reading.

                        3 out of 5 stars Review of Rice Gold.......2000-07-19

                        This is a great book. Of course, you'd have to have an interest in the time and the place, the 1st half of the 19th Century and the coast of Georgia. Emminently readable, with good expositions of the various agricultural practices of the time. Well done.

                          Book Description

                          The lives and careers of Montana's political giants, Joseph K. Toole, Ella Knowles, Joseph M. Dixon, Thomas Walsh, Jeannette Rankin, Burton K. Wheeler, James E. Murray, Mike Mansfield, and Lee Metcalf are inextricably interwoven with Montana political history. Their careers were launched and their values were hewn by a state rich with populism, progressivism, and activism. At a time when Americans search for reasons to reinvolve themselves in government, the stories of these nine politicians remind us of the qualities that underpin effective leadership. This is essential reading for Montanans, those interested in the dynamics of politics, and general readers wishing to gain a greater understanding of our nation's political heritage as exemplified in the lives of nine dedicated individuals.

                          5 out of 5 stars Mavericks captures Montana Spirit.......2000-02-06

                          In the current miasmic atmosphere in public affairs created by the corrupting trinity of big money, indiscriminate television and instant opinion polls, it is salutary to recall those who have lent honor and distinction to public service by honest and relentless pursuit of the common good as they saw it. John and Catherine Morrison have provided such retrospect with their literary pantheon of remarkable Montanans titled "Mavericks," now published by the University of Idaho Press.

                          The lives, times, vicissitudes, triumphs and tragedies of nine leading actors in the drama of this state's first century are skillfully and accurately delineated in a single volume that is a handbook on our public affairs. Which is not to say that it even pretends to be objective. The authors are unabashed admirers of the Josephs Dixon and Toole, Ella Knowles and Jeannette Rankin, Tom Walsh and B.K. Wheeler, and Jim Murray, Mike Mansfield and Lee Metcalf, as far seeing, fearless progressives. This carefully researched and well organized book is at its best an insightful examination of Montana's populist-progressive tradition as illuminated by these players.

                          The list does not include Pat Williams, who sustained the tradition in the House of Representatives for 18 years without flinching. In his concise forward though, Williams adumbrates the Morrison's central theme, "...the golden thread of courage." These men and women were as diverse in their backgrounds, personalities, predilictions, and modus operendi as they could possibly be, yet they had one thing in common: when the chips were down and the issue really mattered, their convictions came first and they did the best they could with the rest of it.

                          The concluding paragraphs are the most intriguing in the book. The authors are relatively young and have not been prominent in public affairs. Yet their six page conclusion is as piercing and enlightened a statement on the state of the state and its future as we've seen. It is informed with an extraordinary sense of the importance, on the one hand, of leadership on the part of elected officials, but, on the other hand, the equal and ever more urgent importance of participation on the part of all of us. Well and deeply considered and elegently written, these few paragraphs are a much needed orientation as to where we are now and a beacon to the future.

                            Sarton was a master of the art of letter-writing. The notes are useful, the editing is superb, and Sarton shines through as a rare, passionate, and exacting friend and lover. My only complaint is that this volume is "selected," not "complete." I'm looking forward to Susan Sherman's next presentation of the gentle art to which Sarton stayed dedicated throughout her life.
