    Book Description

This introductory guide to risk management provides a robust framework and tools within which managers can minimise the impact of adverse events and enhance the returns from new opportunities. It provides guidance on how effective management of the resultant risk can make an important contribution to business improvement.

Risk management is the process of identifying those events which could influence the achievements of a company's objectives and making positive plans to limit their potential for damage where they represent threats or take advantage where they represent opportunities.

Developments such as e-business and globalisation mean organizations need to respond faster to change and are therefore exposed to a wider range of different risks. Additionally, stakeholders and the general public have higher expectations and companies are expected to show more responsibility and have well developed risk management strategies.

This guide will assist companies to implement an approach to risk management which can contribute to improved competitive advantage and increase shareholder value. It is illustrated throughout with examples and case studies to provoke and provide ideas.

4 out of 5 stars Lesbians and Gay Men in Health Care System.......2000-05-24

This book offers practical and thoughtful advice for specific health care scenarios and problems that gay and lesbian patients encounter. It is meant for patients but can also benefit health care works who wish to better understand the specific problems of this patient population and who hope to serve them better. If you are gay / lesbian /bisexual and know that you will be interacting with the health care system for any extended period of time (e.g., you are sick or pregnant, etc) then it is worth it to at least peruse this book.

        Book Description

With an emphasis on aircraft materials, this book describes techniques for the material characterization to detect and quantify degradation processes such as corrosion and fatigue. It introduces readers to these techniques based on x-ray, ultrasonic, optical and thermal principles and demonstrates the potential of the techniques for a wide variety of applications concerning aircraft materials, especially aluminum and titanium alloys. The advantages and disadvantages of various techniques are evaluated. An introductory chapter describes the typical degradation mechanisms that must be considered and the microstructure features that have to be detected by NDE methods. Finally, some approaches for making lifetime predictions are discussed. It is suitable as a textbook in special training courses in advanced NDE and aircraft materials characterization.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A125414. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: A variety of theories state that communities of practice (CoPs) "evolve" or "mature" through various stages over time. Such theories posit that each stage is characterized by different people, process, and technology attributes/capabilities that ultimately necessitate differing strategies for achieving effectiveness (Gongla and Rizzuto, 2001). A primary goal of AFMC/DRW, AFMC Electronic Learning (eLearning) Knowledge Management Integrated Project Team, and the office of the Air Force Chief Information Officer is to increase CoP participation and effectiveness. This descriptive, cross-sectional research, surveyed all CoP managers of all CoPs "hosted" by AFMC/DRW with a quantitative/ qualitative, 86 question, 5-point Likert, survey. This research suggested that, on average, AF/AFMC CoPs are in the very early stages of evolution, and the extent of implementation for stage-specific attributes/capabilities was found to be minimal. The implications of this finding show, given the relatively "undeveloped nature" of many of the CoPs, there are a wide range of actions that can be taken to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of existing CoPs. These actions include increasing leadership involvement and support, increasing membership education and training, defining more clearly the purpose/objectives of each CoP, and implementing easier technology tools for navigating the COP collaborative electronic workspace.

                Book Description

In this stimulating work, thirteen distinguished scholars examine and aim to reconcile the paradox that social systems tend to steer themselves with the knowledge that they are, at the same time, subject to steering and control from outside. 'Sociocybernetics' is the term they have coined to describe the tools used in the analysis of this paradox; tools which have themselves evolved from and influenced cybernetics and general systems theory.

Sociocybernetic Paradoxes surveys both the possibilities and limitations of cybernetics in the analysis and treatment of social problems: Part One looks at concrete experiences of the steering of specific social systems; Part Two examines the planning, hierarchy and views of society and also the role of social science within it; and Part Three presents the wider context of governing and planning social systems.

5 out of 5 stars Expanding our minds and our possibilities.......2001-02-15

In this exhuberant and well organized gem of a book, Richard Barker not only points out the dichotomy between information passed on genetically and information passed on through communication (genevolution vs lorevolution), but also shows us how acknowledging and evaluating information allows us to make more humane and empathetic decisions regarding our own behavior. Written in a very inclusive style, Mr. Barker invites us to see human nature in a larger scope, and in doing so, opens up insights into why we so often feel that humanity is on a downward spiral, and offers each of us a hand up and out of the seemingly inevitable decline in cultural and societal values. Viewed with an open heart and an open mind, this book is sure to provoke discerning readers to challenge the way we look at life, and to question on what criteria we base our own decisions.

                  Book Description

In prose of biblical grandeur and feverish intensity, William Faulkner reconstructed the history of the American South as a tragic legend of courage and cruelty, gallantry and greed, futile nobility and obscene crimes. No single volume better conveys the scope of Faulkner's vision than The Portable Faulkner.

                  Edited by Malcolm Cowley

                  Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Edges out short stories anthology.......2003-02-18

An influential collection, partly responsible for the late 1940s resurgence of interest in America's greatest author, this construction of Faulkner's narrative world is certainly no substitute for any of the novels. But it has its uses: readers who don't plan to read more than 3 of Faulkner's best novels may find some of Cowley's excerpts a reasonable consolation; Cowley's chronological ordering not only clarifies Faulkner's fictional world but exposes its organic unity; with the exception of "Barn Burning," most of the essential short fiction (including the frequently excerpted "The Bear") can be found here; the concluding commentary and genealogy which Cowley elicted from Faulkner himself is both helpful and a kind of Faulknerian literary piece in its own right.

A slight "down side" (apart from some questionable excerpting and over-emphasis on chronological at the expense of "narrative" time) is Cowley's somewhat "dated" aesthetic judgements (though at times refreshing, since the author was applying them to a "non-canonical" writer).

As for "Burn Burning," it's readily available, free of charge, on the Internet.

4 out of 5 stars A great introduction and companion, but use wisely.......2000-12-18

The Portable Faulkner is a wonderful intro to Faulkner, but it's just that--an introduction. It can't do whan the entirety of one of Faulkner's novels will do, and in some cases I recommend skipping a bit in the Portable Faulkner until the corresponding novel has already been read (for example, Dilsey's section of The Sound and the Fury shouldn't be read in the Portable if you haven't read The Sound and the Fury. Trust me, TSatF is a book where you don't want to read the last chapter before the first three).

Better than an introduction, the Portable Faulkner also serves as a very interesting companion to those already familiar with Faulkner--it does the great service to readers of putting Yoknapatawpha stories in chronological order, which is an interesting perspective we may not otherwise get to see.

However, above all, there are two reasons why I bought this book.

First, it includes the Compson Appendix. If you've read a copy of the Sound and the Fury that didn't include the Compson Appendix, you need this. It's something that has to be read after the Sound and the Fury to capture the whole of Faulkner's story.

Second, it includes Faulkner's Nobel acceptance speech, which is wonderful, especially as a complement to reading the books themselves, and which is very nice to have in book format like the Portable Faulkner.

5 out of 5 stars A terrific introduction to Faulkner.......2000-07-01

The Portable Faulkner is THE way to be introduced to William Faulkner, arguably the best of 20th century American novelists. Cowley arranges whole work and excerpts chronological for Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County; it should be noted that Faulkner did not write his body of work chronologically. By arranging the work in this way, Cowley does us a great service in seeing Faulkner's great creation as an ordered whole.

The drawback to this work is in its goal -- to make more understandable Faulkner's creation in his mythic county. The drawback is that, by design, none of Faulkner's other work is included, such as The Fable.

The Portable Faulkner should be viewed only as an introduction, a tantalizer. Upon seeing the greatest of the work, we can then proceed to the work in its entirety.

5 out of 5 stars The Paramount Faulkner Companion.......1998-01-04

Malcolm Cowley is a genius, only to be suceeded by Faulkner himself. This is the ultimate history of Faulkner's (non?)fictional world.

When I moved to Florida in 1973 I almost immediately fell in love with the pine forests, the bayheads, the shallow lakes, the hardwood hammocks and the swamps. By then much damage had been done to the state and more was contemplated. The drainage canals around Miami, the cross Florida Barge Canal and other, often quite unfeasible schemes, had either been done, started and then scrapped, or were in the works. It seems like the temptation to "improve" Florida from the late 1800s on was so strong it was almost impossible to stop. A number of people had warned about the fragility of the Everglades and other Florida ecosystems, but few listened. However one talented writer with a remarkable background was able to help along the effort to protect the Everglades. Almost simultaneously with the establishment of Everglades National Park, Marjory Stoneman Douglas published her "Everglades: River of Grass'" now the standard work on the subject. In it she demonstrated that the Everglades was not a worthless swamp, but a vibrant ecological community with a long history. Her book's first printing was sold out within 2 months! Other fights were raging by the time I reached Florida- the Florida Barge Canal, of course, but also efforts to protect the Big Cypress and Fakahatchee Strand. Among the people involved were Archie Carr and his wife Marjorie Carr (the latter is included in a photo in the current book).

Marjory Stoneman Douglas, in her autobiography based on tape recordings by John Rothchild, subtitled "Voice of the River," was an institution in the Sunshine State and her book informs her many admirers of the struggles and triumphs she had in a life that spanned a whole century. It is a fascinating tale and full of associations with the most prominent names in Florida and in literature, newspaper publishing and politics. I recommend it highly to anyone, but especially those who are interested in the Florida that used to be.

This brings up another point, and a very sad one. I got to see some of what was left of Florida's natural environment, including Everglades National Park and the Ocala Scrub while I was in Florida (some in the company of Archie Carr). It was a ghost of what once was! Even though the citizens of Florida voted in monies to buy up thousands of acres of sensitive areas, there were many tragic losses. The state's wilderness has deteriorated further since I left it in 1978. I have no wish now to return and see the result, but what is left in Big Cypress, the Everglades, the Ocala Scrub, and many others, is there because of people like Marjory Stoneman Douglas!

It was a great surprise to find that there were no customer reviews for a book that was first published in 1987. This remarkable book is an insight into an American legend, Marjory Stoneman Douglas. She began as a young girl to write for the Miami Herald in 1915. The book shows how she was able to achieve a long history of publications and books to her credit. Additionally, this eminent conservationist who died in 1998 at age 108 has been honored with the saving of the Florida Everglades. This book is a must read for all American women because it provides insight into just what can be accomplished when one woman is motivated to take action.

                                                      Book Description

Much has been written about the life of abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison (1805-79), but relatively little attention has been paid to his wife, Helen Benson Garrison, and their seven children. In "Growing Up Abolitionist," Garrison's public image recedes into the background and the family's private world takes center stage.

The lives of the Garrison children were shaped within the context of the great nineteenth-century campaigns against slavery, racism, violence, war, imperialism, and the repression of women. As children, they became apprentices of these movements and grew up adoring their dissident parents. Collectively and individually, they carried on their parents' values in distinctive ways.

Their path was not always easy. When the Civil War erupted, the entire family had to come to grips with a basic contradiction in their lives. While each member passionately yearned for the end of slavery, all but the eldest son, George, who served as an officer with the 55th Massachusetts Colored Regiment, opposed military participation.

The Civil War years also brought four marriage partners into the Garrisons' lives—Ellen Wright, Lucy McKim, and Annie Anthony (all abolitionist daughters) and Henry Villard, a German-born journalist who later became a railroad magnate and publisher of the "New York Evening Post" and the "Nation."

Raised by loving parents to be political activists, the Garrison children, as adults, assumed positions as leaders or participants in those radical causes of their day that most closely reflected their upbringing: racial justice, women's rights, anti-imperialism, and peace.

                                                          Book Description

"It was not until our father died that we found out about his other life. Then our other lives began." A family memoir. When Don Heche died of AIDS in 1983 at the age of 45, one of the earliest casualties of the epidemic, he left behind a family stunned not only by his loss but by the revelation that for years he had led a secret homosexual life. Determined to reexamine the family?s self-image in the light of this new awareness, writer Susan Bergman sought out her father?s friends and companions and delved back into family history, looking for the telltale fault lines in what had seemed an all-American story. Author Ron Hansen called her wise, passionate, beautifully written book ?the finest portrayal of fear and hiddenness in families that I have ever read.?

5 out of 5 stars This book changed my life........2002-01-18

I was a young man when I read Bergman's story and it convinced me that a sense of anonymity is a delusion. I've tried to be a transparent and accountable person and never consider anonymity when making moral decisions. Even though I read the book only once when it was first released, I still think about it often.

Susan Bergman writes prose like a poet. Her story could be a Jerry Springer show but, instead, she turns it into a moving morality play.

If you are expecting a down-and-dirty tell-all about Anne Hesche, this book isn't for you. Hesche plays a rather minor role.
