Book Description
An indispensable guide to the new techniques for managing knowledge workers
They are the idea people, whose brain power and experience have become more valuable to their companies than physical assets or products (think Microsoft). Today's knowledge workers are so in demand, especially in the high-tech sector, that many command large salaries and will job-hop at the drop of a hat. This hands-on guide gives managers practical, doable strategies for motivating and keeping knowledge workers without breaking the bank or sacrificing productivity and quality. It goes beyond the quick-fix of throwing money at the problem and offers realistic solutions for effectively managing the human side of intellectual capital.
- Features case studies, anecdotes, and examples of companies using the new managing techniques, including IBM, Deloitte & Touche, and Transport Canada
Customer Reviews:
A sound 'primer'.......2000-06-14
An easy to read, simple description of the basics of people management in knowledge organisations. It brings together well established principles and practices and puts them into a 'knowledge' context. Could be useful for managers in the early stages of movement from a 'traditional' to a 'knowledge' mind-set.
Excellent practical guide to making kn. mgt. theory work........1999-08-15
A lot of the business books that I read offer theory that sounds promising, but that I have a hard time using in my real world. This book takes the theories of knowledge management and gives practical, usable ideas for how to make them work on the ground with today's generation of workers. There are even actual dialogues showing effective and ineffective ways of dealing with situations that ring very true (sometimes uncomfortably so). The author clearly knows her field and has a breadth of real-world experience behind her...and a sense of humour to boot! (That's a breath of fresh air in my business book library.) I found this book well-organized, a pleasure to read and full of practical wisdom. I heartily recommend it.
This useful book is a "must read" for managers........1999-08-12
This is an excellent, useful book. It provides practical, down-to-earth applications of knowledge management concepts to the real world of the manager. It is obvious that the author has solid management experience and can speak with authority on what works and what doesn't. Fortunately, it is not a dry, academic treatise. It is, rather, a humourous and highly readable blend of theory and practice which would appeal to senior managers who want to learn how to create the conditions for high productivity from well-educated workers.
No new thoughts.......1999-08-01
Ms. Horibe has written an easy read. Unfortunately, it is too simplistic and lacks any conceptual rigour. Her suggestions are trite and her writing is not original. She spends way too much space paraphrasing others and regurgitation the research and results of her colleagues.
This results in a text devoid of originality. I suggest you search for another text from an author who has more advanced thinking in the field of intellectual capital and knowledge management.
An excellent resource for the knowledge age........1999-04-05
Ms. Horibe has written an excellent resource for everyone who must manage or interact with knowledge workers in any field. This work specifically addresses how to achieve the best possible performance with a team whose skills, attitudes and motives are vastly different than in years past and which operates in a new and dynamic business environment. I highly recommend "Managing Knowledge Workers."

Book Description
This book is about thin films; what they are, how they are prepared, how they are characterized, and what they are used for. The contents of this book not only showcase the diversity of thin films, but also reveals the commonality among the work performed in a variety of areas. The chapters in this volume are based on invited papers presented by prominent researchers in the field at a Symposium on "
Thin Films: Preparation, Characterization, Applications" at the 221st National Meeting of the American Chemical Society held in San Diego, California. The coverage of the symposium was extensive; topics ranged from highly-ordered metal adlayers on well-defined electrode surfaces to bio-organic films on non-metallic nanoparticles. An objective of this book is for the readers to be able to draw from the experience and results of others in order to improve and expand the understanding of the science and technology of their own thin films systems.
Book Description
This edition of Mathematics for Plumbers and Pipefitters continues to teach the essential math concepts that have made the book the outstanding reference in its field. A collection of modern fitting materials demonstrates the various math concepts, and the book emphasizes a problem-solving methodology that can be applied to both current and future materials and job situations in plumbing and pipefitting. Enhancements to the text include simplified explanations, new drawings, a new unit on calculating partial volumes in odd-shaped tanks, and a reworked unit on heat-loss calculations that has been revised to keep pace with modern heat-loss methods.

plumbers review.......2000-04-13
First found out about this book while I was studying for my Journeyman Plumbers license exam.Found it at the library and was so impressed I ordered it from the publisher. Contains very much usefull information.Explains all about simple and compound offsets. Contains all the formulas you will need for performing plumbing tradework.I have the fourth addition and still consider it one of my best resources. I recommend it to anyone who is studying for their Journeyman or Master Plumbers exams or for anyone who would like to learn the professional way of performing tradework.
Book Description
Welcome to Ian Frazier's New York, where every block is an event, and where the denizens are larger than life. Meet landlord extraordinaire Zvi Hugo Segal, and the man who scaled the World Trade Center. Learn the location of Manhattan's antipodes, and meander the length of Route 3 to New Jersey. Like his literary forebears Joseph Mitchell and A. J. Liebling, Frazier makes us fall in love with America's greatest city all over again.
Customer Reviews:
Bag-Snagging in the City.......2007-08-12
The New York in Woody Allen's movies is beautiful but unreal, like a movie star who's never as stunning in real life as on screen. Ian Frazier's New York, on the other hand, is violent and dirty, but real.
These essays are arranged chronologically, from 1975 to 2005. (Oddly, there are no entries from the eighties.) Frazier writes about neighborhoods and bars and shops and characters. There are floods and robberies and murders.
One of my favorite pieces is about a typewriter repair shop that Frazier finds when he needs his manual typewriter repaired. The owner, Mr. Tytell was one of the few typewriter repairmen left as word processors and then computers replaced typewriters. The article was written in 1997 and the 83 year-old owner had just renewed the lease on his shop for another ten years. Since ten years has passed, I was curious if the shop was still in business. A quick search revealed that the shop went out of business in 2001, but the family still has a successful document research service, doing forensic investigations of typewritten papers. No word on whether Frazier still uses a typewriter to write his essays.
There are three pieces about Frazier's obsession with removing plastic bags from trees. This apparently is not a specifically New York obsession since he mentions trips to Los Angeles and Massachusetts and Illinois to remove bags from trees. When he first wrote about bags in trees, it didn't seem completely odd to me that he might remove bags in his own neighborhood. You want your neighborhood to look nice, don't you? But it became more of a sport for him and his buddies. They snagged bags instead of golfing. I suppose the fact that I read three pieces about bag snagging is testimony to Frazier's writing. I sure wouldn't have read three articles about golfing. And it's a lesson for the young writers out there -- if you can't find a quirky character to write about, become one.
GONZO JOURNALISM LIVES!.......2006-03-04
Hunter Thompson may be gone, but personal journalism is alive and well as evidenced by this superlative collection of quirky, elegant pieces subtitled, "Adventures in the City". If Ian Frazier's book were a mystery, #1 would probably have posted a five-star review the day after it was published in November 2005. Since GONE TO NEW YORK is only a collection of casual essays, it has waited four months for its first customer review. Essays get no respect from Amazon customers -- or from Amazon either, for that matter. Amazon's entry for the book lists Jamaica Kincaid (who wrote the introduction) as the author, rather than Frazier.
Frazier, a displaced Ohioan, makes the reader see New York through his eyes: focusing on peculiar and interesting details that go unnoticed by visitor and native alike. The longest is a 35 page profile of Canal Street (where he lived during its gritty years) and its denizens. In the aftermath of 9-11 he interviews George Willig, who earned brief celebrity-hood in 1977 by climbing one of the twin towers. Frazier reports on the vintage graffiti on desks in the stacks of Butler Library. He writes twice about "Bags in Trees". In the first he simply describes the diversity of plastic bags and other items that adorn trees in Brooklyn. A decade latter he tells how he and a friend became obsessed with removing the arboreal litter and end up inventing and patenting an extension tool for removing it. My favorite in the collection is "Typewriter Man" about Martin Tytell, who still sevices manual typewriters.

From the supplier: Section 1398(g) of the code lists seven specific attributes that can be carried over to a bankruptcy estate but does not address an individual debtor's passive activity losses and credits, suspended at-risk losses and other tax attributes. Proposed regulations would rectify this problem and allow for these attributes to be carried over. It seems that attributes not specifically listed are not eligible for carry-over. The effect of the proposed regulations on already existing bankruptcy estates are discussed.

“A must read for all who continue to grapple with the twin legacy of hatred and hope from September 11. . . “*
International terrorism expert Roland Jacquard’s In the Name of Osama bin Laden presents a dramatic portrait of the world's most wanted terrorist and his extensive brotherhood--the network of people who operate “in his name.” Published originally in France the very week of September 11, as events in the United States shook the world, the book has become an international bestseller.
Jacquard details how bin Laden became an international emblem of fundamentalist, pan-Islamic, anti-U.S. fervor and the leader of a brotherhood so passionate that devotees who have never met him will act autonomously in his name. The author explains the global character of bin Laden’s organization, elaborating the extent of his sphere of influence in Europe and Asia. Jacquard reveals the construction of bin Laden’s networks—including a profile of his inner circle—and their collaboration with overlapping webs of banking, drug trafficking, religious, and terrorist organizations. He considers the brotherhood’s access to biological, chemical, and nuclear weapons and warns that, with or without bin Laden, this global terrorist force will remain a threat.
Now in English, this edition has been substantially updated in light of recent world events and expanded to include previously unpublished materials, featuring a new introduction and afterword. New documents include an April 2001 interview by the author with bin Laden; a September 24 proclamation by bin Laden to Muslims in Pakistan; and a key page from Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri’s book justifying eternal jihad, which was smuggled out of Afghanistan in October 2001.

ROLAND JACQUARD'S IN THE NAME OF OSAMA REVIEWED BY JOHN CHUCKMAN.......2006-03-18
This book is a poor effort. It reminds me of one of those quickie books about the Mafia from the 1960s that were indigestible piles of newspaper cuttings and police tips. Such books spilled over with supposed mobster names and sinister-sounding activities, all with no perceivable organizing principle or meaningful analysis.
Just so Jacquard's book. After you've read it, you will understand almost nothing more about bin Laden than you knew before you read it. Jacquard has the name of every insignificant Arab-sounding individual ever given a parking ticket somewhere in the Western world, often going off on a pointless tangents from his attempt at a narrative on bin Laden. Unfortunately, the dozens of undefined organizations Jacquard mentions sound a lot like the Devil's Circle in that silly 1930s cliffhanger serial, The Three Musketeers.
The one interesting thing about this book is that it confirms a theory of mine concerning so-called experts on terror. In the United States especially, there are scores of such fellows regularly appearing on television news or writing other quickie books. No one ever seems to question how they are qualified to be considered experts in terror. After all, terrorist organizations are very secretive. How much did we ever learn about the IRA, a truly professional terrorist organization if there ever was one?
Much of what is claimed to be known today about al Qaeda, for example, is the result of American torture in a chain of post-invasion gulags. Like a child's cry of "uncle!" hoping to be released from a bully's grip, the words of the tortured are of little worth.
I am still trying to find a worthwhile book about bin Laden, but in the meantime, Jacquard's book is recommended only to be avoided.
Bush didn't get rid of Osama.......2004-10-31
More than 3 years after Osama Bin Laden and his gang attacked us we still are having to deal with his threats. We need a president who will not lose sight of our true enemies. After losing so many of our young men and women and spending so much money we are no safer than we were on 9/11!
What was the point?
Please vote for John Kerry.
Competent though not Terrific Book.......2002-05-26
Jacquard provides a competent if somewhat truncated book that covers much of the same ground covered by other Bin Laden authors. At something like 167 pages, the book is also a little on the short side. Nonetheless the book does provide some interesting tidbits not found in other books. For example, there are a few pages on Bin Laden's links to Iraq, interesting stuff. Overall this book provides a decent overview of Bin Laden and his objectives, there are better out there though. For the price of a paperback, however, this book gets the job done.
Maybe the best book on the subject.......2002-05-10
This is not you typical USA-centric CNN analysis of UBL and al-Qaeda. Jacquard's book carries the insight of a foreign intelligence organization which is arguably the most adept in the world at counterterrorism. Unlike Bodansky's UBL bio, which though informative was dry and repetitive, this is written in a journalistic style which makes it exceptionally readable. I learned more about al-Qaeda from this book then any other single text. Very highly recommended.
Full of insight.......2002-03-22
In the Name of Osama bin Laden is a close as we're likely to get to an insider's view of al-Qaeda and the interworkings of those closest to bin Laden. The author has incredible access to internal documents--including terrorist training manuals, translations of communiques from bin Laden to his brotherhood, and intelligence papers--that reveal much about the relationship between political/religious groups and the passions of the bin Laden brotherhood. Some will consider them important to coming to an intellectual understanding of the bin Laden network and the mindset of the terrorist while others might see them as evidence--in either case they definitely reward reading.
Roland Jacquard's access to players in the drama distinguishes this book. His April 2001 interview with bin Laden is included. This and the other supporting documents (some in English for the first time) that appear toward the end of the book provide important documentation for Jacquard's analysis and descriptions. They are a crucial part of understanding that the bin Laden Brotherhood is active around the globe and there are large issues that must be dealt with. Chilling, but important.
