Outstanding! I received this book several years ago when Roz spoke at a meeting of the Northern New Jersey Chapter of ASTD. It's about time someone listened to what employees want, and Roz has certainly done that. From "15 Ways to Get Rid of Your Staff" to "What Kinds of Recognition Would You Like to Receive," the book is a no-nonsense primer on recognition and rewards. Without exaggeration, I've recommended this book to easily a hundred or so colleagues, clients, and classmates over the past few years, and plan to distribute some copies as well.

I purchased this book with about 6 others to investigate new ways to recognize employees. This book is only 106 small pages long, but even at that length, the author and publisher padded almost every page with big fonts, cheap clip art, and LOTS of white space. I could look past this if only the few remaining ideas were valuable, but the book is full of ideas like "Give your employee a $100,000 bar (a candy bar) to recognize them for a good idea" or "Make everyone a big mug of hot chocolate"...

This is the type of recognition QUICK reference guide every manager should have on his/her desk. This book seems to hit on almost every occasion where recognition could be a form of reward. The book is small, easy to ready, down-home and applies to all employees, from executives to blue collar. In addition to the book, Ms. Jeffries does an outstanding job with the seminar for managers. I would have difficulty recommending this book to either a statistician or an astronomer. As a statistician, I felt that the book was lacking in detail about the astronomy, thus making it more difficult to understand the subject matter. Similarly, I feel that an astronomer would have difficulty following the statistics, since the explanations are fairly brief.

It is well known that the conservation laws and the constitutive equations of Continuum Mechanics lead to complicated coupled systems of partial differential equations to which, as a rule, one fails to apply the techniques, such as the maximum principle, usually employed in the studies of scalar uncoupled equations. The study of the qualitative behaviour of solutions of the systems requires different techniques, such as the so-called Energy Methods where the properties of some integral of a non-negative function of one or several unknowns allow one to arrive at important conclusions on the involved unknowns. Whoa!.......2007-10-09

I had an hour to kill the other day waiting for some friends to come over. I didn't want to get into anything heavy and I had this book on the shelf so I thought I'd read a few pulpy pages. I bailed out on my friends and read the entire book in one sitting. Don't start it if you don't have a few hours, there's no place to get off of the roller coaster.

There are two main areas I want to cover in this review: The first is the author's writing style, and the second is a review of the story.

Charlie Huston writes like an army machine gunner on speed, using words instead of bullets, and his gun is locked on automatic! His non-stop flurry of words, become sentences, become paragraphs, become pages, without you even realizing that time has passed and many pages have been turned. The excitement and impact of his "street-fighter's" jargon cuts to the bone in burgeoning streams of of unrelenting consciousness. WOW!!! I recommend getting your blood pressure checked after reading one of his books!

Now as far as the story goes, the main character is Henry "call me Hank" Thompson. Before Hank's life became ensconced in the bowels of New York in a deadly "cat" and mouse game of intrigue, he grew up in Northern California, and was a Little League and high school baseball player of great renown, with each of his games being watched by Major League scouts. The scuttlebutt was that Hank would skip college and go right to the pro's. But then in a regional championship game while attempting to steal third base, he had a messy collision with the third baseman, that resulted in a bone in Hank's leg sticking straight out from his calf. The pins they stuck in his fibula restricted growth in the bone, and no one even pretended he would ever play again.

From there his life took him to New York, where he wound up being a bartender with a drinking problem (That's the worst kind of bartender to be!) and things went downhill from there. Hank accepted that station in life, and felt things couldn't get any worse, until one day a neighbor was going out of town and asked him to watch his cat. That simple act of human kindness, led to the following: Hank getting beat to an inch of his life by two Russian-like musclemen, having a kidney removed, having two black cowboys kidnap him and threaten to kill him, have a red-headed Asian torture him, have crooked cops try to kill him, and much, much, more... all at a "warp-speed" machine gun like pace, that doesn't stop! I don't want to give anything else away, so if your Doctor says your blood pressure can take it... Buy the book!

I loved this book and I just finished the whole trilogy. I read them in 2 weeks. I couldn't get enough of Henry Thompson. You can't help but to love the character and feel sorry for him at the same time. Oh yeah, and there's a cat. I saw this book at the library and was instantly hooked. No, this book is not for everyone. From dirty cops to black cowboys and russians in jumpsuits. I will be buying the trilogy so I can read them as much as I want.

This was the first book I read by Charlie Huston and after I read it, I was hooked. Fantastic writing style...he writes the way I talk, so the story flows in such a way that I almost don't feel like I'm reading but that I'm actually watching the story unfold.

Not for the faint of heart.......2007-07-23

This is not the kind of book I normally read, but I picked it up based on a recommendation by Stephen King posted in the NYTimes this spring. I read it in one night. It is violent, very violent, but the evolution of Hank Thompson's character and the unexpected turns of the plot makes this book impossible to put down. And then there's the cat who clearly has more than nine lives.... In the middle of the all the mayhem and mystery I found myself wondering how is Buddy holding out -- which it turns out is one of Hank Thompson's concerns too.

A Masterpiece on Man and Nature.......2003-02-28

Beautifully -- in places lyrically -- written, this small volume makes a compelling case for preservation of the natural beauty that once prevailed throughout North America, and which now has become all too rare. Never straying far from her main theme (the life of Grey Owl), Jane Billinghurst draws us into the passion and dedication of her subject, leading us reflect on environmental questions not as dry policy issues, but as ones that can relate to an almost spiritual connection between the individual and his natural surroundings. Must reading for historians, environmentalists, and those with an interest in Canada, this insightful book is thoroughly rewarding for the general reader as well. Very highly recommended.

A Well Written Account of an Incredible Life.......2000-05-24

This is a wonderful book. Well researched and balanced. Jane Billinghurst tells the story of Archie B. and I could not put it down. Other's have borrowed it and have praised it also. I am off to check out what else Billinghurst has written!

Two books in one. Beautifully illustrated........1999-07-27

It has been said, "one cannot judge a book by it's cover", however, we must also keep in mind that there are no absolutes as this book is a story which is depicted, in large measure, by the cover. Sensitive, warm, and poetic presentation of the life and contributions of Grey Owl. The photos exceptional in quality, and accurate as to life and times of the era. These are real people, places, and times that were a part of North American history. The manner in which sayings and aspects of Grey Owl are available as the story unfolds are done in such a manner I think you get two books for the price of one. I read the book from cover to cover the first time then re-read the white pages only, and then followed by reading the tan colored pages. Either way it is easy, fast, and enjoyable. I think the author did an excellent job in demonstrating the efforts of Grey Owl. He was an interesting fellow who had a vision and purpose in life which is so unique that a major moving picture has been make about him as well as four documantaries. Jane Billinghurst has created a work which makes possible an interpretation of the content, by the reader, as it is a factual and well documented treatise. There have been several books published about Grey Owl, in my opinion this is, like the Land of Shadows (Don Smith), is a must read for a deeper appreciation of this most remarkable fellow, Grey Owl.

Overview of the most famous family of England's north.......2004-08-25

In the middle ages, the people of northern England "knew no prince but a Percy." The Percy family ruled the English/Scottish borders in the middle ages from their castles at Alnwick, Warkworth, and Prudhoe, among others, serving as march wardens and representatives of the king. They led the English through many battles in the Scottish wars of independence, including the battles of Neville's Cross, Otterburn and Humbleton Hill. Henry Percy, the first Earl of Northumberland, and his famous son, Harry Hotspur, were immortalized by Shakespeare in his play, "Richard II." They were allies of Richard II who turned on him and helped set Henry IV on the throne, only to turn against him, too, with disastrous results.

This book is a survey of the history of the ambitious family of kingmakers that ruled the north and its later descendants who brought stability and honor to the family name. Complete with lots of portraits of the family from the Renaissance on, the book is not terribly in-depth, but is an easy and enjoyable read about one notable family's journey through time.

Excellent case study of an aristocratic family.......2003-03-14

While the first representative of the Percy family in England probably did not fight at Hastings, it's likely that he arrived the following year to found what would become one of the wealthiest and one of the most socially elevated aristocratic dynasties in the country. It survived in its male line until the death at a young age of the 11th Earl of Northumberland in 1670, leaving only a daughter. Elizabeth Percy's third husband was a Seymour and the duke of Somerset and her granddaughter, another Elizabeth, married Sir Hugh Smithson, who adopted the name of Percy and became 1st Duke of Northumberland. It is through this line that the family still survives. Lomas's goal is not to supersede but to update and reinterpret the work of Edward Barrington de Fonblanque (ANNALS OF THE HOUSE OF PERCY, 1887) in light of new data and perceptions. The family's progress in national life was far from smooth and even, being visited at intervals with political disaster, economic near-ruin, and plain bad luck. His approach is one of scholarly detail but his style is quite readable, making this an entirely accessible case study accompanied by a lengthy bibliography.

Highly enjoyable and now I need more.......2005-11-16

I mostly read fiction but the book descriptions were enticing and the two reviews convinced me I had to read it. I found the book and devoured it in one sitting - now I need to read more by the author. This reads as a very honest and thought provoking story and anyone (race, gender, religion outlook on life) will find interesting.

Enjoyable and Thought-Provoking Read..........2005-04-11

I like to mix up my reading list periodically by throwing in a non-fiction book from my usual genre (lesbian literature). With "Heart's Progress" I'm glad I did. This book tells the story of many of us who got married before we figured out who we really were (or had the courage to admit it). In sharing her life with the reader, Bepko does an outstanding job of relaying the feelings and complications associated with coming out in an unforgiving society.

The book invoked feelings of sadness, frustration, deep-rooted love, absolute anger, fear, and many others. I laughed, I cried, I was both sad and happy to see it end. If you or a friend are having issues related to coming out (or trying to define yourself), this book is for you.

Claudia Bepko has written an outstanding book. Although written as a memoir, it could be more accurately called the life story of any one of us -- gay or straight. Everyone will find some part of this book where they see themselves in similar circumstances. The author used vivid descriptive language that makes it a pleasure to read. I am anxiously awaiting her next book!

Disappointing..........1999-09-30

I eagerly began this book, having read "Too Good for Her Own Good", also written by Bepko. While there were many interesting passages about her early life, I quickly became frustrated with the monotonous and too-frequent blow-by-blow descriptions of Bepko's verbal fights with her partner Alice. Too much navel-gazing...and what was the point of all that spousal-sparring overkill? I skipped much of the book, relieved to see it end. I'm glad that Claudia's story resolved happily, with her reunion with the love of her life. I'd have much preferred more stories about her second time 'round with Molly....

Love, Pain, and the Reality of Life.......1999-03-05

There is so much reality in this book,and so much I could relate to.

There's the initial confusion about one's sexual orientation, first recognizing those feelings and then later being passionately, deeply in love, dealing with homophobia, finding a life partner and then all the conflicts and pain that can involve.

Claudia's feelings so frequently reflected my own.

She tells of the dissatisfaction of a heterosexual marriage.

The hard effort of trying to make a relationship with her lesbian partner work.

Moving from the city to the country. The trauma of an accident, and losing everything, but eventually rebuilding one's life, and finding love again.

Very honestly and well written book. I highly recommend it.

This book relates not just to being lesbian, but to being human.
