    Book Description

Why do we need to understand audit committees? The Cadbury Committee recommended that UK companies should adopt them in response to financial scandals that have stemmed from dubious financial reporting practices. In other countries, similar commissions have made similar recommendations and audit committees are now a common institution. However, many practitioners doubt whether an audit committee really does much to ensure the integrity of a firm's financial statements because, as outsiders, members don't know enough to dig deeply beneath the numbers.

The Audit Committee: Performing Corporate Governance argues that such criticism overlooks the ceremonial function of these committees. The audit committee is an arena where members can form and strengthen shifting and fragmentary networks with each other and with the external auditors. Within these networks, both consensus and independence are demonstrated, generating comfort, which legitimises the company and maintains its access to external sources of capital.

The audit committee is a key part of the corporate governance structure within an organisation. Many in the UK have been patched together to meet regulatory requirements and their operation is poorly understood because few people other than their members have access to their deliberations.

In this account of the world of audit committees the practitioner will find the ethnographical perspectives on ceremonial performance, consensus, independence, and comfort both familiar and different. It's like looking at a photograph of something commonplace from an unusual angle or through a strange-shaped lens.

      Book Description

Employee-Driven Systems for Safe Behavior Throughout the reign of Total Quality Management (TQM), the author and his associates pioneered and field-tested a behavior-based approach to continuous safety improvement. Strong on fundamentals, Employee-Driven Systems for Safe Behavior shows how leading companies have applied TQM in safety since the mid-1980s. This book was written for all safety professionals dedicated to accident prevention and presents the methods used by more than 130 companies to achieve continuous improvement in their safety performance. Part One The Safety/Quality Connection provides an overview of the behavioral theory at the foundation of this approach. Part Two Methods for Continuous Improvement in Safety introduces key procedures and instruments of the behavior- based approach to safety, such as the inventory of critical safety-related behaviors, peer-to-peer observation and feedback, and statistical analysis of behavioral data. Part Three Current Issues in Behavior-Based Safety presents issues in behavioral management including ergonomics, employee selection, and incident investigation. Part Four Results and Case Histories profiles case histories of implementations at companies such as Monsanto, Chevron, and PPG Industries, Inc. The material presented in Employee-Driven Systems for Safe Behavior was developed by the author and his colleagues in hundreds of conference and training sessions with safety professionals, managers, and wage-roll personnel from companies across all industries and regions of the U.S. and Canada, and in Australia, Jamaica, and Britain.

          Book Description

Strasbourg Astronomical Observatory is quite an interesting place for historians: several changes of nationality between France and Germany, high-profile scientists having been based there, big projects born or installed in its walls, and so on. Most of the documents circulating on the history of the Observatory and on related matters have however been so far poorly referenced, if at all. This made necessary the compilation of a volume such as this one, offering fully-documented historical facts and references on the first decades of the Observatory history, authored by both French and German specialists. The experts contributing to this book have done their best to write in a way understandable to readers not necessarily hyperspecialized in astronomy nor in the details of European history. After an introductory chapter by the Editor, contributions by Wolfschmidt and by Duerbeck respectively deal extensively with the German periods and review people and instrumentation, while another paper by Duerbeck is more specifically devoted to World War II times. A subsequent chapter by Débarbat describes the development of instrumentation at Strasbourg Observatory during the French period between World Wars. Several contributions are devoted to specific astronomers such as Wislicenus (Duerbeck), Wirtz (Duerbeck & Seitter), and Muller (Bacchus). Two chapters by Heck and Jung deal with the genesis and the first years of the Stellar Data Center (CDS) installed at Strasbourg Observatory, while Kovalevsky recalls that the Hipparcos space experiment was born there. Seggewiss reminds the links of the Observatory with the Astronomische Gesellschaft, starting with the inauguration of the place. Bodenmuller & Heck discuss the visibility of the Observatory in the regional press around the beginning of the 20th century and two notes by Heck analyze respectively the Coronelli globe of the Observatory and Danjon & Rougier’s first spectroscopic studies of the green flash from Strasbourg. Several appendices conclude the book: lists of council members and of Observatory scientific personnel, as well as a compendium of the institutional publications until Year 2000. This book will be most usefully read by historians, researchers, teachers, librarians as well as by students in astronomy and sociologists of science.

            Book Description

If the text you're using for general chemistry seems to lack sufficient mathematics and physics in its presentation of classical mechanics, molecular structure, and statistics, this complementary science series title may be just what you're looking for. Written for the advanced lower-division undergraduate chemistry course, The Physical Basis of Chemistry, Second Edition, offers students an opportunity to understand and enrich the understanding of physical chemistry with some quantum mechanics, the Boltzmann distribution, and spectroscopy. Posed and answered are questions concerning everyday phenomena. Unlike other texts on this subject, however, Dr. Warren deals directly with the substance of the questions, avoiding the use of predigested material more appropriate for memorization exercises than for actual concrete learning. The only prerequisite is first-semester calculus or familiarity with one-variable derivatives. In this new edition, the entire text has been rewritten and keyed with an accompanying website, which contains instructive QuickTime movies on topics presented in the text to enhance student learning and participation.

1 out of 5 stars Impossible to understand.......2006-11-05

I took Warren S. Warren's freshman chemistry course at Duke with this evil book. It is basically a list of equations. You will not be able to figure out the problems, and since there is no solutions manual or anything comparable, you will not find out how to do them, either, unless you are a brilliant, brilliant person, in which case you should definitely buy this book. Otherwise, stay away.

This book is a summary of his lectures, and let me tell you, he is a terrible lecturer, so if you need this book for class, look forward to not knowing WTF is going on.

2 out of 5 stars Unless you are a genius...........2002-11-02

Oh dear.... "The Physical Basis of Chemistry" is a good book for a VERY select few, those of you who are geniuses or have already taken physical chemistry. I am in an Honors FRESHMAN Chemistry class right now, and our professor required this book.

Let's just say, even after 3 years of chemistry, I understood five things in the whole book. It is written somewhat poorly. For example, he keeps on introducing more and more equations without telling what the variables mean. I had to look back three chapters to figure out what "R" represented in a certain equation. It was not fun!

This book also requires advanced levels of calculus, which many (including me) in my class have not even taken yet. He discusses taking the double integral and vector multiplication (or something like that). It is not practical unless you have taken differential equations. Also, the practice problems are as difficult as heck! So unless you are a genius looking for a challenge, I would not recommend this book.

If you are a professor/teacher, make sure that your students have the level of knowledge necessary to understand this text. Otherwise, they will be completely lost.

              Book Description

This book describes the genetic mechanisms that govern the development and evolution of animals and plants. In particular, the book focuses on animal and plant species evolving in isolated habitats and species colonizing new territories. This approach--studying "founder" populations--enables geneticists to more readily identify some of the evolutionary pressures affecting the speciation process. The Founder Principle in population genetics was elucidated in large part by Hampton Carson in classic studies of Hawaiian fruit flies (Drosophila). The editors of this volume have commissioned seventeen chapters by an internationally recognized group of geneticists who discuss the principle in relation to plant speciation, chromosomal evolution, molecular evolution and development, sexual selection, and genetic changes in natural populations.

                  4 out of 5 stars Fun!.......2007-09-09

I bought this series for my boyfriend and have found myself paging through it. Hamilton's novels are quite fun and full of action, which keeps the reader energized. However, those expecting these works to mirror Anne Rice will not be satisfied, as these novels lack the level of detail present in Anne Rice novels. They do of course concern themselves with vampires, so those fond of Anne Rice will have fun with these. Definitely worth the read!

                  3 out of 5 stars Bubble Gum.......2007-08-18

Bubble gum is not good for your teeth, but I chew it anyhow. I know it will satisfy a craving consistently. Like bubble gum, I cannot stop chewing up these books. It is primarily the sexual tension on the pages and the fact that I am a Buffy fan and need my vampire fix. The plots are formulaic, and Ms. Hamilton does need a better editor. "Alright," though used, is not really acceptable in formal text. In the third volume, Anita's car gets totaled, and then suddenly, she has a car again to follow someone to the million-year-old vampire's digs. I also cannot stand some of the author's phrases, such as "heap big vampire slayer." Quite possibly I cringe because no young woman would talk like this. As well, I have a hard time buying some of Anita's outfits. I was in my twenties in the late 90's, and I never would have worn the ensembles Anita wears. Thank God that Blake is taking some hints from the Master of the City. Granted the protagonist has bigger things on her mind; however, she dresses like the would-be love child of Richard Simmons and Minnie Pearl. There are some other typos and logical inconsistencies scattered throughout other books. All the things I just mentioned are "nitpicky," but some of them do stop me in my tracks as I am flying through the pages. I do not want to encounter sand when I am chewing my gum.

                  5 out of 5 stars Amazing books.......2007-06-27

Perfect! I finished this box set in less than a week. The books have excellent plots, detailed characters, and witty humor that have me laughing out loud. I made the mistake of getting one of the later books first and was so glad I started at the beginning. These books are fun and frisky. Definitely a recommended read for those who like action, romance, and refreshing characters.

5 out of 5 stars Got me Started.......2007-03-17

This 4-book set was the first I had read of the Anita Blake series. I have since ordered another 5 books from that series and will order the rest after I read those. These are really well written and move right along with interesting characters and plots.

5 out of 5 stars Anita Blake foursome...........2007-03-15

Anyone who loves Laurell K Hamilton will love this foursome. These are the first books in the Anita Blake series and well worth your time for a great price.

                        Book Description

Son of a Sharecropper tells of the flu epidemic of 1918, World War I, the Depression, and the Dust Bowl. Subject matter ranges from old-time doctoring, one-room schoolhouses, and old-time religion to moonshinin, 'ridin' the rails, and hard times. A thread running through the book is the desire of a sharecropper's boy to own his own land. Every chapter is filled with wry humor; tragedy and triumph are handled with an even hand.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing stories - Amusing Storyteller.......2004-06-24

It's hard to beleive all of these things happened to a man just 27 years old by the end of the book.

These are true stories of dustbowls and the depression - warm, heartbreaking and hilarious, told in anecdotal form. It flows easily from story to story, and each chapter begins with a brief overview of what was going on in the world at the time.

_Son of a Sharecropper_ gives an entertaining history lesson while providing a close look at an inspiring and hardy group of people.

                          Book Description

An exceptional work of miniaturist history, THE JOURNEY OF MARTIN NADAUD reconstructs the experiences of an ordinary man who rose to meet the challenges posed by extraordinary times.Through the life of a little known French political figure, Gillian Tindall recreates the world of France's master stone masons-builders of the Pantheon and the Louvre-and brings to life the turbulent atmospheres of Paris and London during the19th century.Born into a poor family in the rocky heart of France, tramping hundreds of miles to Paris to find work at age 14, Martin Nadaud became a stone mason, a revolutionary, and a Member of Parliament. After the failure of the 1848 Revolution, he was forced into long and lonely exile in England.Nadaud found work on the building sites of Victorian London and eventually, under an assumed name, became a schoolmaster in Wimbeldon. He made his final triumphant return to his homeland in 1870, as France sat poised on the brink of humiliation, bloodshed, and rebirth.Publicly, his was a life finally crowned with success. But on a private level Nadaud suffered griefs and losses would leave lasting marks on the man.Examining family letters and personal papers that have lain unread for the last hundred years, Gillian Tindall has constructed a moving and compelling portrait of a working man and his colorful times.

                              Book Description

I am not telling the story of my life just to write a book. I tell it because it seems my plain duty to do so. A narrow escape from death and a seemingly miraculous return to health after an apparently fatal illness are enough to make a man ask himself: For what purpose was my life spared? That question I have asked myself, and this book is, in part, an answer.

I read it some years back after finding it in a rural library that had probably never been culled, and the foreword's writer said the book should never be allowed to go out of print. Unfortunately, it was, and now it's back!

My guess is that Mr. Beers was bipolar.

5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking work in the field of mental health.......2005-12-20

Clifford Whittingham Beers, 1876-1943, was the American founder of the mental hygiene movement, born in New Haven, Conn., grad. Sheffield Scientific School, Yale, 1897.

After the publication of this book, A Mind That Found Itself (1908), which is an autobiographical account of his confinement in a mental institution, he had the support of the medical profession and others in the work to prevent mental disorders. He was a leader in the field until his retirement in 1939.

This book is an amazing account of what it was like to be institutionalized at a time when mental illness received little attention or respect.

A groundbreaking effort towards the acceptance of mental health as a serious disease.

                                Simply an awesome read.

                                  Book Description

A Mind That Found Itself by Clifford Whittingham Beers, is derived from as human a document as ever existed; and, because of its uncommon nature, perhaps no one thing contributes so much to its value as its authenticity. It is an autobiography, and more: in part it is a biography; for, in telling the story of the authors life, which he must relate the history of another self-a self which was dominant from his twenty-fourth to twenty-sixth year. During that period, unlike he had ever been been, or what he has been since. The biographical part of his autobiography might be called the history of a mental civil war, which he fought single-handed on a battlefield that lay within the compass of his skull.
