Customer Reviews:
The best one of many that I have read........1999-10-01
Dr. Shirley's advice is realistic, practical, and useful. She covers a lot of ground, gives specific advice for different ages, different circumstances. She's ready to tell the truth, which for most of us is that we need to live less expensively, save money, and face facts about finances. I can't recommend this book highly enough. Others I have read are more general, repetitive, and don't give solid reasons for their advice. Dr. Shirley explains her advice, and, unique in this kind of book, names names.
This book does not cover enough real-life scenarios........1999-08-20
This book if fine if you have had the time and opportunity to put money aside for retirement.
It does not even touch upon those of us who are married for the second time, are basically just starting out all over again with nothing in the bank and no retirement packages at work and who are paying astronomical amounts in child support and will be until we are a hair away from retirement. How are we supposed to amass any money when the "ex" gets it all?
WE are the people who need the help. WE are the people who will be living on a very "fixed" income while the ex-wife will be living in security using the child support money for her retirement.
I'm totally disgusted.
I used the book to motivate my parents to plan.......1999-02-22
I like the real world examples. I really felt as if I could apply the techniques to my life. I liked the author's personal interjections. It made her more credible.
It has very useful information.......1999-02-11
The neat thing about this book is that it gives examples of normal people and how they managed to come up with the money to invest. It's hard to think about investing when you've got kids in school and elderly parents, but I really learned a lot.
Book Description
This practical guide describes difficult situations, analyzes how they come about and then suggests strategies for dealing with the problems successfully. It aims to address disruptive behavior patterns once and for all, instead of having to handle one-off "difficult" events, time and time again.

A guide that is both useful and funny........2006-02-02
In this fast paced world people are becoming more and more difficult. Mike leibling seems to know about people and gives great advise on even the most difficult situations. I escpecially liked the "what ticks us off" segments.A really practical guide to handling stress at work.

Book Description
This should prove to be the definitive work explaining van der Waals forces, how to calculate them and take account of their impact under any circumstances and conditions. These weak intermolecular forces are of truly pervasive impact, and biologists, chemists, physicists, and engineers will profit greatly from the thorough grounding in these fundamental forces. Parsegian has organized his book at three successive levels of mathematical sophistication, to satisfy the needs and interests of readers at all levels of preparation. The Prelude and Level 1 are intended to give everyone an overview in words and pictures of the modern theory of van der Waals forces. Level 2 gives the formulae and a wide range of algorithms to let readers compute the van der Waals forces under virtually any physical or physiological conditions. Level 3 offers a rigorous basic formulation of the theory.
Customer Reviews:
Teaching and Research and Van der Waals forces.......2006-09-15
I teach courses covering the fundamentals of surface and colloid engineering. The Parsegian textbook is ideal for either teaching a segment of 6 to 9 lectures or teaching an entire course on Van der Waals forces - I have done both. Moreover, there is also advanced material included that is important for applications that range from biomembrane physics to wetting phenomena. Even the price is right!
This is an excellent book in every way.
Every science library should have two copies of this book........2006-02-10
This book is the best ever written about Van der Waals forces. Parsegian is the world's expert on this subject, which is essential for an understanding of physical biology and much of chemistry, engineering, and physics. Parsegian writes superbly and clearly. His book is fun to read. Every biologist and every biophysicist should get a copy. Every science library should have at least two copies of this book.

The Circular Staircase by Mary Roberts Rinehart.......2006-11-10
A few years ago, in my quest to meet all the mystery writers that have influenced the genre, I discovered Mary Roberts Rinehart. Her books may fall into the gothic romance category, but I love them for another reason. She spins a good mystery story, a "cozy" that lets us have a relaxing read without getting too graphic. But what I really enjoy is experiencing the modes/attitudes of the times she wrote about. Reading her books is like stepping into history, the day-to-day life of the wealthy and poor, and their concerns, big and small. Some of this lifestyle seems crazy to us now. At the same time, some of it is the same, merely in another form. If you follow her books, she tells a tale of how things did change for the elitist class, with characters and style along the lines of Mary Higgins Clark. The Circular Staircase was written in 1907. In many ways, it shows that people haven't changed that much at all in 99 years. It's not a serious read, but it's one that will engage you in the past and keep you up late, with a bowl of popcorn, to see what happens. If you're a Clark fan, you'll love this book, and be checking out the other Rinehart novels.
Very Much "Old Style" But Quite A Bit Of Fun Nonetheless.......2005-07-17
Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876-1957) was never a critic's darling and both her short stories and novels were repeatedly dismissed as "low brow junk"--but the reading public of the early 1900s adored her, and she had a very long and commercially profitable career. And although most of her work could be best described as "romance," it is for her occasional mystery that she is best recalled today.
Written in 1907 and published in 1908, THE CIRCULAR STAIRCASE was among Rinehart's most popular works. Wealthy spinster Miss Innes is persuaded by her two wards--niece and nephew Gertrude and Halsey--to take a house in the country for the summer. But no sooner is Miss Innes and her fearful maid Liddy installed at Sunnyside then things begin to go bump in night, and murder is not far behind.
THE CIRCULAR STAIRCASE is very much of its era: like many novels of the time it has a Victorian hang-over that shows in both its highly improbable plot and its determination to spell out every possible detail. Not a great stylist, Rinehart was never really able to shed these issues in any of her works--but if you are prepared to suspend disbelief and enter into the spirit of the thing THE CIRCULAR STAIRCASE is actually quite a bit of fun. There are sounds in the night, mysterious faces at the window, screaming maids, unexpected visitors, and all the rest. And the book would become extremely influential in an unexpected way.
In 1917 Rinehart joined forces with playwright Avery Hopwood to adapt THE CIRCULAR STAIRCASE to the stage, and when it opened on Broadway in 1920 as THE BAT it proved one of the decade's most durable shows, a mixture of mystery and comic cliche. The result was a wave of similar novels, plays, and films that not only cast a long shadow but which are still very much with us today. So wait until a dark and stormy night, pour yourself a cup of warm milk, and read THE CIRCULAR STAIRCASE by flickering candlelight... and if you hear a noise in the furthermost part of the house, just tell yourself it's only Miss Innes making one of her ill-advised nocturnal investigations!

Horrible.......2004-08-05
This is the worst written book I have ever read. Actually I could not even finish it. There is a comma after every other word which makes it hard to follow. You eventually do not even care anymore who did it. I cannot believe it was published.
A haunting mystery, a smooth, fast read........2001-10-18
This is Mary Roberts Rinehart at her best. The author tells a haunting tale which is on a par with The Yellow Room. Rinehart is a master at setting the stage and draws the reader in with her unique stlye of mystery writting. She expertly developes the plot and her character descriptions are flawless. A real page turner and a great read.
A classic mystery thriller........2000-11-04
For decades Mary Roberts Rinehart was the queen of mystery thrillers -- the American Agatha Christie. The Circular Staircase was Rinehart's first published novel (The Swimming Pool was her last), but it is a well-constructed work in ever way. Rinehart's special gift was in the evocation of an overlying and unremitting atmosphere of unease and potential danger and it is under such an atmosphere of apprehension that she spins her stories. For some time it has been fashionable to dismiss the novels of Mary Roberts Rinehart as old fashioned. This may apply to superficial details -- such as gas lighting -- but it definitely is not true of the novels themselves which are timeless in their ability to hold the reader in a grip of mystery and suspense. The Circular Stasircase is one of the finest mystery novels ever written.

1ST PARAGRAPH: This is the story of how a middle-aged spinster lost her mind, deserted her domestic gods in the city, took a furnished house for the summer out of town, and found herself involved in one of those mysterious crimes that keep our newspapers and detective agencies happy and prosperous. For twenty years I had been perfectly comfortable; for twenty years I had had the window- boxes filled in the spring, the carpets lifted, the awnings put up and the furniture covered with brown linen; for as many summers I had said good-by to my friends, and, after watching their perspiring hegira, had settled down to a delicious quiet in town, where the mail comes three times a day, and the water supply does not depend on a tank on the roof.

Pombo: A Man of Che's Guerrilla : With Che Guevara in Bolivia 1966-68
ASIN: 0873488555 |
Customer Reviews:
"Honest, straightforward and audacious".......2006-05-02
"Honest, straightforward and audacious" is how the author describes Che Guevara, the Argentine who along with Fidel Castro led the Cuban revolution to victory. Such description is the polar opposite of the dishonest, double-speaking and cowardly character of imperialist leaders in Che's time: Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon, as well as today: Bush, Clinton and Bush. Some of who used their wealth and privileges to evade the fire of war. All of who glibly sent young people off to slaughter others or be killed while trying to protect the interests of the ruling rich.
This 36-page pamphlet, including the excellent footnotes and photographs, is a wonderful introduction to the Cuban revolution and its foreign policy. It is made up of easy-to-read interviews with "Pombo" - Harry Villegas, brigadier general in the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba who fought alongside Che during the final battles of the Cuban revolution as well as with freedom fighters in the Congo and Bolivia.
Additional reading: Cuba and the Coming American Revolution by Jack Barnes; Our History is still being written by Armando Choy; Capitalism's Long Hot Winter Has Begun by Jack Barnes.
A life of solidarity.......2006-03-19
One way to measure the Cuban Revolution is to look at the women and men it produces. This pamphlet does just that. It both tells us about Harry Villegas's amazing life and gives us a number of his insights. Villegas (also known as Pombo) joined the Revolution as a working class youth in rural Cuba. Since then, his life has been dedicated to world solidarity, frequently risking his life. Pombo served at the side of Che Guevara in Cuba, Africa, and Bolivia. After Che was executed by the CIA, Pombo led a small band of Cubans in a courageous escape from Bolivia. After that, he served in Angola as part of the Cuban force that helped defeat the invasion by apartheid South Africa. What a life! This man and his insights are a true reflection of the Cuban revolution and its incredible record of solidarity with the oppressed. John J. Casserly’s diary is a unique historical record that reflects the realities of the Ford presidency. Sincere, candid and thoughtful, these daily soliloquies provide intimate verbal snapshots of the people, the problems and the uses of political power in the Ford White House. His insightful writings display his personal dismay at and hope for our nation’s political system.
Book Description
In 1830, 16-year-old Osborne Russell left his Maine farm and ran away to sea. He didn't like it. He ended up joining an expedition headed to Oregon by way of the Rocky Mountains. Along the way he acquired the skills necessary for survival in the mountains. He also learned the Snake language, hunted buffalo, and trapped beaver, looked for new trails west, and kept a journal that forms the basis of this vigorously authentic book. The descriptions are so accurate that contemporary readers are using the book to retrace Russell's footsteps!
Customer Reviews:
Inside the Mountain Man era.......2007-06-04
This is one of the first of dozens of journals, diaries, and recollections of the early west I've read over the years, and remains my favorite. I think this comes about as close as you can come to getting inside the head of an early Rocky Mountain fur trapper. In many you'll find bravado, truth-stretching, or the other end of spectrum - a recounting of the barest of facts. This is in between the two, and hints at times at what it actually felt like to be living those times. Three examples that come easily to mind are an encounter with a grizzly early in his career (and only luck saved that career from ending that day), his descrptions of the "sheep-eater" Indians and the place they lived on the Lamar River in the Yellowstone Park area, and his thoughts put to paper as he sat at the top of a high mountain and bid farewell to the trapping life and the virgin landscape that had been his home for 9 years.
The style of writing is different than today's and takes some getting used to initially. But I think it's worth it to read history straight from those that lived it rather than limiting yourself only to the digested product of later day historians.
Reliable Account of the Mountain Men .......2006-08-10
Osborne Russell was never one of the elite of the Mountain Men. He spent most of his time in the mundane tasks of cooking, cleaning, and other camp chores while on trapping expeditions. But he wrote one of the best accounts -- certainly one of the most accurate -- of the peregrinations and the exciting events in the life of a Mountain Man. Osborne was in the Northern Rockies between 1834-1843 and was a participant in many expeditions of Bridger's and fights with the Blackfeet.
Editor Haines has compiled the routes of Russell's travel in 10 maps and added explanatory notes to his narrative. However, a lot more could be done to make this book more readable. First, there are no chapter and few paragraph divisions to ease the task of the reader. It's even hard to keep track of what year Russell is talking about. Secondly, there is room for many more footnotes and explanations of what Russell was doing and when and where.
We need a new edition of Russell's work which will make it more accessible to the reader. This old edition is invaluable if you are a student of the Mountain Man, but the casual reader may bog down.

A fascinating view of the trapper's life.......2003-08-06
This is the best description of the life of a trapper I have ever found. Most accounts deal more with the highlights of the Indian fights and other great challenges that these men faced. Russell deals with a number of these but also covers the day to day life of camping, riding, trapping, hunting food and cooking it as well as some of the day to day social interactions.
Fortunately many of the places he desribed are still intact and can be visited today. One can still see buffalo in the Lamar valley in Yellowstone or see the area where he crossed the Snake River in spring flood in bullboats. His careful accounting of the routes and locations make it possible to almost follow in his footsteps.
The author has done an excellent job of editing this information in his well annotated footnotes and his maps. A thoroughly fascinating volume.
A wonderful insight to the life of a mountain man.......2003-01-14
A great book but hard to read at first because of the language that Russell uses. There are wonderful stories of indians and escape. This book leaves you wanting a continuation, but because it is a personal journal that is impossible. Haines does a wonderful job editing. A must have for the library of a mountain man.

A wonderful journal account of days long gone.......2006-07-16
There's not much that one can add to this list of great reviews. That's what kind of book this is. I found it remarkable how quickly the landscape changed in those 10 years regarding populations of Native Americans, buffalo, and beaver. In the last few entries we begin to see some of the damage done upon the Native Americans i.e. small pox, alcohol, and lifestyle and it's very depressing. Likewise, Osborne describes the plummet in buffalo populations and the approaching end of the fur quest as beaver populations dwindled and other furbearers were becoming more profitable. These were a rugged bunch of men and this is perhaps the best look into their lives and into the changed and vanished West.
The life of a Mountain Man.......2006-05-29
This well-known and highly-regarded account of the life of a fur trapper in the Rocky Mountain West was born as a corrective by its author of an earlier narrative (Pattie's PERSONAL NARRATIVE) that he thought was filled with inaccuracies. Osborne Russell spent eight years as a trapper in the employ of a number of fur companies before becoming an independent trapper working out of Fort Hall. Fortunately, when he first went to the mountains with Nathaniel Wyeth's expedition in 1834, he began to keep a journal. From his journal he compiled a manuscript for publication; it's from this manuscript that the present book is based on. Osborne had a tendency to run sentences together and to practice unconventional language usage, all of which editor Aubrey Haines retains in this edition. One quickly gets used to it, however.
Russell was an acute observer and, especially in describing his travels, was careful to mention distances and names (streams, mountains, etc.) when possible. Haines has been able to trace Russell's travels accurately, and ten accompanying maps illustrate his wanderings. (Haines's annotations are also numerous and thorough.) He trapped for a time with Jim Bridger, and some of what we've learned about him has direct bearings on Russell's journal accounts. In fact, Russell's book is the major source of information for a number of important events in the Rockies during this time. He also writes about the Indians (especially the Crows, Blackfeet, and Snakes) and much about the animals found in the West. Most of all, he tries hard to convey the life of a trapper - scouting the country, the laying of traps, hunting for game, dealing with the weather and terrain, the rendezvous experience (Russell attended six of them) - all the everyday routines trappers went through. This indeed is the most valuable thing about the book. Russell left the mountains in 1842 and settled in Oregon City; after an unsuccessful run for governor in 1845, he wrote his manuscript for JOURNAL OF A TRAPPER. He got the gold fever in 1848 and went to California, where he became a merchant. After his partner ran off with the company funds, Russell spent the rest of his life trying to pay off the creditors. He died near Placerville in 1892.
This is a must-read book for anyone interested in the fur trade period of the trans-Mississippi West. It's gone through many editions and always seems to stay in print, thank heaven. Highly recommended.
Journal of a Trapper.......2001-09-26
This is by far one of the best books that a fur trade re-enactor can read. It is also a must read for the modern beaver trapper as well. Osborne describes the everyday events of the fur brigades in their heyday. If you are a buckskinner, living historian, trapper or just an old west history buff then this is a MUST have!
An interesting book........2001-08-13
The trapper's journal by Osbourne Russell during the early to mid 18 hundreds came as a bit of a surprise. First the book is a factual account without any explication of the events more than is necessary. It is not told as an adventure story eg "Last of the Mohicans" but rather as a journal pure and simple of the travels through the Rockies, mainly Yellowstone, of this young trapper over 9 years in the pay and as a member of Jim Bridger's fur company, around 100 men. The trade was at its peak at this time. As is true of most journals it is full of abbreviations of words because of time constraints eg brot. for brought, staid for stayed etc. This gives the impression of crudity in the writing, or of a man not used to writing but rather writing in only a haphazard fashion. Every reader knows how easy it is to loose all the fine points of writing when it is not practised constantly. The journal is full of place names and directions of travel and a few maps indicating the progress of the trappers. There is some description of the scenery and the Indians of the area eg Blackfoot which are a constant threat, Shoshones (Snake), Bonnack and Crow. Occasionaly I was pleasantly surprised by paragraphs of eloquence and beauty mixed in with the simplistic writing which was the norm. Russell was capable of very good writing when he was inspired or wished to do so. This is also demonstrated by his letters to his sisters which are written with great style and few grammatical errors, completely unlike his journals.
There is much which comes to the fore in regard to the period eg the waste and destruction as the parties of trappers even in groups as small as 3 wonder the countryside and simply kill a Bison Cow for a meal and then discard it, or just take the tongue to eat. Incredible disregard for nature is shown at times. The trapper is in continual fear of Blackfoot war parties who harrass them, both white and Indian, constantly. In one instance an enormous group of Blackfeet, thought to number up to 1000 or more by Russell, attempt to eradicate the entire group of Bridger's trappers, about 100. They decide not to due to an unfavourable (omen) display of Northern lights. Even in his day as the story nears the end of the 9 years Russell tells of the scarcity of Buffalo which were not wiped out in total until 1870 or so (80 million -> 1000). Its almost as if it comes upon them suddenly, "5 years ago thousands crossed the valleys of the Yellowstone, now its hard to find any". Russell even becomes a little conservationist in spirit when he states that maybe its time for the white man to leave this country because the wildlife has been so denuded.
An interesting book but with far too few passages describing the trapper's feeling along the way.
