When I bought this book I didn't think that this "Financial
Times guide..." was for reading European markets. Make sure
you know that, this book is for European markets before buying
it. There is no help in the web page description telling you.
The definitions are well written and can be use for general use.
The references are to the European exchanges. The information
to those markets a good.

The book is good those who plan to or are investing
in European market, and those want learn general investment
terms.

Harold Hill's collection of sketches is my favorite of all my books on the moon. Hill has a wonderful sense of the aesthetics of the moon's features, and his meticulous and beautiful sketches show rare lighting conditions seldom caught in photos. More than once I've used his book as a reference to check an unusual feature I've spotted; but more often, I just browse through the sketches, sigh and wish I could draw so well.

Yes, this is really an entirely fresh start for P-Chem!.......2000-07-29

This is, as Dr Bassi points out, really a new and modern book. It starts with Q.M. and introduces only formulas that are simple enough to be able to find use throughout the rest of the text. The whole book is just so coherent! The author knows all the time what you know, from following his book carefully, and pushes you all the time to your limit - but not beyond, as the mathematical derivations really are "neat". All other books are broken up into three major parts, between which there is only superficial connection. Here, the same equations govern every concept touched upon. It gives you a great feeling of satisfatcion and understanding! Overall, the book feels more like a novel, for its exciting style of writing and, again, continuity! (In spite of using very few words - this is definitely not the work of a graphoaniac!) If this is a textbook, then it sure is one of an all new breed... I look forwards to the next edition, with better binding and fewer misprints. And perhaps a supplementary volume with excercises, too. Get this book now! Even if you know this stuff, following the golden threads that the authors lay out, in a very personal and novel way, might let you experience some connections anew, or at least test your own skill agianst some unusual conclusions that pop ur here and there.

This book is really, really new in its disposition. I admire that someone still has courage to follow his (or hers) own ideas, instead of just going with established trends, that are not necessarily very good. The authors are brilliant scientists, and the sharpness of their intellects and their passion is with you all the time. I must again be very brief, but can give the following comments on this masterpiece:

- The authors accomplish "the impossible": the book allows the reader to refer to individual chapters - as reference, then, thanks to very lucid, simple mathematical derivations, always with the weaknesses in the models used clearly defined - as well as to read the entire book and "survive" - i.e. understand what one is reading - without using any other sources parallel.

- The authors start with defining the few q.m. notions, very simply and lucidly, that are then used throughout the book (modern as it is!), rather than using the archaic introduction comprised of abstract classical-thermodynamic discussions, that set out to uselessly "reinvent the wheel", by refusing to take help of the fact that we know about the discontinuity of matter (i e atoms). No more q.m. is presented than that which is needed in the rest of the book, otherwise a great danger to coherence, in my opinion (a disesase of most modern "phone-directory texts"). And this is typical of the book: no more is introduced than that which is needed - and then, those concepts are used throughout, afterwards, which is wonderful for the user: it both lets him experince control and also is the best sort of review, to actually use the concepts learned.

- Almost every theory presented is immediately afterwards applied to actual, down-to-earth chemistry, always involving familiar undergraduate topics, mostly from organic and biochemistry. Again, this is valuable as review for this courses and further reflection. Note that the examples are always VERY, VERY INTERESTING.

- As indicated, the book presents one whole, unified view, and what will be to the immense joy of all students, these authors point out, carefully, whenever something is observed that should be surprising (surprising to all those that are not already post-doctors in this area; again a stupid habit in other books of the "anthology" variety, like Atkins, Moore..., that just give you a wild array of topics, naturally RELATED, but in the books only slightly CONNECTED). Actually, often an observation is first presented, and then the situation is investigated - very beautiflly and simply.

- More advanced material is collected in boxes, but is still referred to, at later times, when appropriate.

- The authors have taken much trouble in presenting some "science philosophy", asking you to become aware of your own thinking process, and even questioning the habit of assuming correctness of our mind. I just love this.

- The introduction to Supramolecular Machines is extremely fascinating, BUT although it acts as a "carrot" for the reader to get through the earlier chapters, it is not so strongly connected with the rest of the book that it deserves mentioning in the title itself. I see this as "advertising" on the part of the authors for this area - which I do not criticize. This area (hard to define!) might well become as important as biotechnology.

*A WEAKNESS in course use: there are no unsolved exercises or problems. But somehow, exercises would have marred the fantastic coherence. This could be seen as the best HANDBOOK of the PRINCIPLES of physical chemistry ever in print - like the title says. Many short, self-contained chapters, with solved problems that are anything but routine... it's perfect. Anyone can use it - and enjoy its exciting style, simultaneously. *Other weaknesses: poor-quality pictures (but with good descriptions). Not very good index. Rotten binding, as always, these days: the book just falls apart, almost at once.

A sedate samurai.......2007-08-20

The plot of this book makes a terrific outline: A young Chinese man recuperating in Japan from tuberculosis while Japanese troops are slaughtering his Chinese contemporaries in the pre-World War Two invasion; a quiet but strong and wise caretaker who lives to rescue victims of leprosy, including a woman spurned by his best friend; a marriage crisis for the Chinese man's parents; a Romeo/Juliet type love story between the Chinese man and a young Japanese woman. Should be socko.

Instead, it's sedating. Whether it's the passive nature of Stephen, the young Chinese man, or the very pedestrian writing style of the author, I found this book consistently tepid. She shows off her new knowledge about Japanese culture, giving detailed descriptions of every meal and every kimono.

She tells the story through Stephen when the caretaker, Matsu, is the central character. Because Matsu is strong and silent, we don't get inside his character development.

Nevertheless, it's an interesting look at Japan before WWII: religion, relationship and customs.

Beautiful.......2007-08-15

A delightful story of a chinese teen, sent to japan on the eve of WW2 to recuperate after getting tuberculosis. He meets his father's servant who he gets to know and the locals, finding them friendly and welcoming even with the war. He finds the simple way of life, instead of being boring, fills his days and he is bereft when the war forces him to leave.

A wonderful piece of prose, this haunting story of the simple people and their tragic lives is a page turner.

Read this book when feeling calm.......2007-05-21

Reviews of the Samurai's Garden seem to fall into two camps. The "Oh my God, I loved it-best book evers" and the "Are you kidding me? This book stunk category!"

My problem with those in the latter category is that (with a few exceptions) readers who did not like this book tend to mount some moral literary high horse. They relish insulting other reviewers, as in "Anyone with any discerning taste and one scintilla of brain cells would NEVER like this book, ergo if you do you, I hate to break this to you, but you are a stupid, simple, idiot." Listen to yourselves! I wonder what it must feel like to these people to know everything?

Anyway. I did not particularly love this book, but I really can see how many did. The case can definitely be made that there were many layers of beautiful, intertwining lessons in this seemingly simple, yet really more-complex-than-it-looks book. In that sense, it kind of reminds me of the polarizing effect of the Ladies' Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith.

My biggest problem with this book was that I don't think I was in the mood for it. I read it at a time when I had a lot going on, and couldn't sufficiently savor it. This is a book to be savored in peace. For most of my read of it, I wasn't in a peaceful frame of mind as a reader. My personal restlessness wanted more action, less bean cake eating. A few times, however, despite myself, I was caught flat-footed with awe by something in the story. The one thing I took away was to never forget that everyone has a story that helps define them. You just have to be still and listen.

Gorgeous Prose.......2007-02-12

Languish for a while in the Tsukiyama's Japanese garden and you may never want to leave. The serenity created in Matsu's little haven is contradicted by the military domination of the Japanese over the Chinese and the reclusive leper colony struggling for a peaceful existence in a realm beyond that of war. It is to this environment that a young Chinese boy enters into in search of healthier air and soothing salt of the sea . As his body begins healing, his emotions are delicately fractured by all that he learns of war, leprosy, first love, his family secrets, and the servant Matsu - who is truly a master of wisdom, honor, and faith. I wanted to walk through this garden again and again.

Ralph Nader: Battling for Democracy is a great story about this American icon, consumer advocate, and activist of the highest order. Ralph Nader has been working towards a better world since he was a young kid. Throughout the years, Nader has formed many organizations throughout America. Today, one cannot go anywhere without being affected by some of Nader's life long work. Ralph Nader: Battling for Democracy focuses almost exclusively on the work Nader accomplished between the years of 1960 and 2000. I definitely noticed how Kevin Graham (author) had glazed over Nader's childhood. When I read this book, it felt like Graham thought that where and how Nader grew up was not important to the book. But, I wanted to know more about the background of Ralph Nader, as well as his accomplishment.

Graham organized the book in chronological order, beginning with the motor safety trials in November 1965. This is followed by a brief description of Nader's childhood, and then the book goes into detail about Ralph Nader's other accomplishments. Due to the fact that the words that graham decided to use flow well, this book was an easy read. He kept all of the vocabulary simple and to the point. Overall, this book had many strengths and few weaknesses. One of the weaknesses that the book had was the length. With only 121 pages, I fell that Graham could have spent more time on the book. He could of added detail about Nader's childhood and family.

Nevertheless, these minor mistakes are not strong enough to detract from the quality of the book. Overall, this book rates about four stars as it was extremely interesting and it had great facts. But most of all, this book was an easy read. I would recommend this book anyone who is interested in the work of Ralph Nader and wants to work towards a more democratic society

This book is awesome!.......2001-02-18

This is one of the best biographies I have seen that is intended for all ages. Not only does it have the most ADORABLE pictures of young Ralph as a child and young man, but it offers a terrific tribute to Ralph's heroics over the years, with a much greater focus on American activist-hero than on election-spoiler. This book will be great to have around for myself and for my own kids in the future, and the best way I can think of to remember Ralph when he's gone. Read This!

Short and concise, this little book is an excellent introduction to the life of that rarest of modern American personages: a Statesman. Though never holding public office, Ralph Nader is unmatched in post-Martin Luther King, Jr. America in his influence on the public good, his consistant stand for principles, and his enduring and often lonely crusade for democracy. This book belongs in every school in the nation as proof that the Jeffersonian ideals are still alive in this country and American democracy need not be a lost cause. This book is filled with inspiration - only wish there was an expanded version for us older readers!

Children's book about an American hero........2000-11-08

This book is great if you want a concise, quick-read biography of Ralph Nader, the hero of our times. For me, it just wet my appetite to know more. Be aware that it is written for children, and for that reason I think it should be banned. If our children read this and then see who we voted for in this election, they will never forgive us.

This tightly written biography offers keen insight into one of the most important figures in the movement toward true representative democracy in the U.S. - a government run by the people and for the people, rather than one dominated by corporate interests. Graham gives us a compelling read on Nader and the values he extolls and has fought for as a consumer advocate - and which he has continued to battle for as a U.S. presidential candidate.

The book is refreshingly concise without sacrificing a multi-dimensional portrait of Nader. Graham, for example, not only describes the important and ground-breaking work Nader has undertaken in his selfless career, but he also gives us intimate insight into the events in Nader's life that shaped his all-too-rare integrity and his passion for true democracy.

I love biographies, but generally they require a good chunk of my time to get through. This book offers a real advantage to the person who wants to get an intimate feel for and understanding of this fascinating man in a short read. If you're cynical about political "business as usual," take heart. Read Graham's book. Change can happen!

I grew up in the 50s and 60s. I was a member of the USAF Nurse Corp from 74-80 and can relate to Claude's book. His journey around the world from his humble beginnings in the French Colony, the island of Mauritus, to the success of being a major player in the technical advances in US/Euopean radar communication from pre-Telestar to our preasant technology read like I was talking to a friend. The book provokes questions about how much of your time is enough to devote to family and how far is too far to further one's career. It is an informative true American success story with a twist of sadness and loss.

Zounds! if alive-what ails you? if dead-why did you not fend me word? -from "Letter XLII" Ignatius Sancho was born aboard a slave ship in 1729; by the time he died in 1780, he was not only a free man but a respected member of British society. He entertained the cream of literary and artistic London, served as a butler for the Duchess of Montague, and was the first black man to vote in a British election. This collection of his letters, first published in book form in 1782 to enormous popular acclaim, documents his extraordinary life with wit and insight, and features correspondence with many famous names of the day, including the actor Garrick, the Montague family, the sculptor Nollekins, and the writer Laurence Sterne. As a London celebrity, Sancho was a rallying point for British abolitionists, and his writings continue to provide an invaluable and unusual first-person perspective on the experience of free blacks during the slave trade.
