        Book Description

"Fantastic! David Levy captures the thrill and excitement of that moment of "Eureka!' when a great mind has discovered something that will change our understanding of the universe. No one evokes the beauty and exhilaration of discovery like David Levy, who helped discover Comet Shoemaker-Levy that crashed into Jupiter. A must read!" -- Buzz Aldrin, astronaut, Apollo 11, first manned moon landing

"In COSMIC DISCOVERIES, David Levy . . . highlights seminal discoveries made by sky watchers of the past five centuries. As a relentless sky watcher himself, and as a closet romantic, David makes you feel as though he knew each discoverer personally and is supplying first-hand accounts of their work." -- Neil DeGrasse Tyson, astrophysicist and Director, Hayden Planetarium, New York City

"David Levy has done it again, having produced another fascinating book. . . . You may not find your own comet or planet, but you will find some amazing stories of astronomers and the wonders of the night sky." -- Brent A. Archinal, U.S. Geological Survey Astrogeology Team

"Scholarly and spellbinding--a good read cover to cover." -- Donald K. Yeomans, senior research scientist, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadenz, California

"Unless you're an astronaut, there is no better journey into space than to travel with the curious minds of those who have made the breakthrough discoveries." -- Emlyn H. Koster, President and CEO, Liberty Science Center

"This is a fascinating account of a spectrum of astronomical discoveries and the people who made them. The book sparkles with excitement and insight. Levy himself has experienced the magic of cosmic discoveries, and has personally known several of the astronomers of whom he writes." -- Roy L. Bishop, Ph.D., past president, The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada

"David and Wendee Levy describe the thrill of discovery as only astronomers who have 'been there, done that' really can." -- Paul Weissman, Senior Research Scientist, Jet Propulsion Lab

"Science is much more than a logical search for cold facts; it is a passionate activity pursued for the joy of discovery. David Levy knows this from his own experience, and expresses that joy better than anyone." -- Stuart Weidenschilling, Ph.D., Senior Scientist, The Planetary Science Institute

        5 out of 5 stars You'll want to discover a comet too!.......2003-01-03

This book is just briming with the joy of discovery. David Levy, one of the discoverers of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, which crashed into Jupiter, details the exuberant joy of finding a comet. In this mostly chronological look at comet discovery and other similarly relationed astromonical discoveries Levy leads one on an engrossing journey through space. Starting with Galileo, but focusing mostly on modern discoveries and discoverers one comes to understand the motivation of these amateur and professional astronomers. Pleasantly accessible for those who can only recognize the moon, but also a wonderful trip for the expert. Beautifully written! A must read...it will make you want to discover a comet too.

              Book Description

Set on the high ground at the heart of Cape Ann, the village of Dogtown is peopled by widows, orphans, spinsters, scoundrels, whores, free Africans, and "witches." Among the inhabitants of this hamlet are Black Ruth, who dresses as a man and works as a stonemason; Mrs. Stanley, an imperious madam whose grandson, Sammy, comes of age in her brothel; Oliver Younger, who survives a miserable childhood at the hands of his aunt; and Cornelius Finson, a freed slave. At the center of it all is Judy Rhines, a fiercely independent soul, deeply lonely, who nonetheless builds a life for herself against all imaginable odds.

Rendered in stunning, haunting detail, with Diamant's keen ear for language and profound compassion for her characters, The Last Days of Dogtown is an extraordinary retelling of a long-forgotten chapter of early American life.

3 out of 5 stars OK but not great........2007-10-05

This book was OK, but not as great as I expected from the reviews. It doesn't really have much of a plot but is more a peek into the lives of the town's inhabitants.

              5 out of 5 stars GREAT Story..........2007-08-12

This was my first Anita Diamant book, and I absolutely loved it. I loved the flow of the story, and the diversity of the characters, and how many of them looked after one another, knowing that everyone else was against them.

Upon finishing this book, I googled Dogtown, Ma, and saw that it's only 2 hours from my house...so I'm in the process of trying to convince my husband to take a trip up there with me so I can see the now deserted little ghost town, along with Gloucester. While Dogtown was an actual town, gossiped to be inhabited by witches and prostitutes, this is a fiction book, based very loosely on what's know to be it's last days.

If you like somewhat historic novels with eccentric and down-on-their-luck characters, then you'll love this book. It opens in 1814 with the death of Abraham Wharf, and follows the dwindling residents of Dogtown for the next 30 or so years. While this was my first book from Ms. Diamant, it most definitely will not be my last. I highly recommend this :)

              4 out of 5 stars Easy Read.......2007-08-07

This is a easy book to read. The characters are interesting. Overall its a good book, but not a great book.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but didn't really grab me.......2007-06-20

This book is a fictional imagining of what life must have been for the last inhabitants of Dogtown, a settlement outside of Gloucester, MA. Those inhabitants were mostly widows, single women, freed slaves, some shady male characters, and a couple of families. The town and townspeople are looked down upon as misfits, rogues, and, to put it bluntly, losers. The settlement is dying, literally.

I finished the book, and I thought it was OK, but only OK. I'm trying to figure out why it didn't grab me, and it's a struggle. Maybe it's because the characters do not always seem to deserve our sympathy -- they seem so over-the-top pathetic, eccentric, or victimized that you just want to shake them. Or maybe it's the way the characters are drawn -- sometimes they seem more like caricatures. Too many plot threads going on at once? Could be. Like I said, I can't quite put my finger on it.

Still, it's decent historical fiction, and it's got me looking forward to visiting the site of Dogtown, where you can hike and yes, bring your dog.

4 out of 5 stars I liked it better as I got into the book.......2007-05-24

Although the book starts slowly, it got very interesting as I got into it and began to become involved in the lives of the characters. Very well written and I can encouraged others to read the book.

              Book Description

Fostering the "pursuit of happiness" was an avowed purpose of the American Revolution, but what was the phrase to mean in practice? How would the new society being created achieve what Enlightenment egalitarians called the "common good"? In this dual biography of Benjamin Franklin and his
grandson Benjamin Franklin Bache, Jeffery A. Smith examines the careers of two of the most prominent journalists to advocate what became known as Jeffersonian republicanism. Franklin used his writings to encourage the kind of conscientious and public-spirited behavior he thought necessary if the
majority of people were to secure free and prosperous lives. He impressed these ideals on Bache as he supervised his education in three countries and established him as a printer-publisher in Philadelphia. In the 1790s, as Federalists and Republicans battled over the course the United States would
take in national and international affairs, Franklin's carefully indoctrinated protege became Jefferson's confidant and most fierce journalistic supporter. Franklin and Bache were among those envisioning a nation where liberty, learning, and a more even distribution of wealth would inaugurate a new
epoch in human history. Published on the 200th anniversary of Franklin's death, this careful study offers a much-needed illumination of early American aspirations for a democratic future.

5 out of 5 stars Franklin and Bache Enlightened Jeffersonians.......2003-01-30

Jefferey Smith's " Franklin and Bache " is a great book. Starting with the life of Benjamin Franklin and his intellectual development to the his grandson's formation of the Philadelphia Aurora and battle for liberty in the 1790's this book holds your attention. Smith shows how Franklin developed an elightened philosophy of liberty, equality, and classical republicanism and instilled it into his grandson. Young Benjamin Bache became the epitomie of Franklinian ethics: hard working, educated in the classics, sincerely devoted to republican government, and with a streak of revulsion to injustice.

In the 1790's as the Federalists began develpoment of their centralizing theories, and their Hamiltonian ideals of "energetic" government, government by a plutocratic elite, and commercial develpoment, Benjamin Bache was aroused. A firm republican, his Aurora preached the values of agriculture, liberty and sovereignty of the people, support for the French Revolution, and support for democratic as opposed to aristocratic government. Bache was an avid supporter of Thomas Jefferson and his ideals of liberty and republicanism.

Persecuted by the Federalist under the tyrannical Alien and Sedition Laws Bache stood steadfast in support of freedom of the press and the First Amendment. His untimely death due to yellow fever deprived the Federalists of their victim, but brought attention to the cause of liberty. Inspired by the ideals of Franklin and Jefferson for a liberal and enlightened society Bache proposed reform of the US Constitution, opposed slavery, supported penal reform, and care of the poor. If you want a good overview of the ideals of Franklin and Jefferson in the early republic this is a great buy.

Although one cannot accuse J.A. Zeigler of being a creative writer, his account of this horrifying family is definitely an interesting one. I live in the town that the Bighams lived in, and practically everyone here has read this book as well as the now out-of-print "A Piece of the Fox's Hide" by Katherine Boling. Who came before Charles Manson? Jim Jones? Jeffrey Dahmer? The Bighams!

                                Book Description

Victor Serge was, according to his friend Julian Gorkin, an 'eternal vagabond in search of the ideal.' A compelling figure and a hugely accomplished writer, his is the story of a 'course set on hope,' a pursuit of truth, dignity and human justice set against some of the most momentous events of the twentieth century. A Belgian-born Russian, Serge was twenty-eight when he first set foot in his homeland in 1919. Within months he had joined the Bolsheviks, and went on to participate in the first three Congresses of the Comintern before fighting in the siege of Petrograd. Because of his alliance with the Left Opposition, Serge was subjected to frequent arrests and narrowly escaped death during his eventual deportation from the Soviet Union in 1936. He remained in Paris until the Wehrmacht arrived in 1940, when he fled with his family to Marseilles. Desperate for an exit visa, he was finally admitted to Mexico, where he died in poverty in 1947. Throughout his life Victor Serge wrote prolifically and tellingly of his times: novels and short stories as well as biographies of Lenin, Stalin and Trotsky, and an enormous archive of unpublished work including correspondence, polemics and essays. Susan Weissman's biography is the first to give due weight to the extraordinary commitment and optimism of this great political writer.

                                Customer Reviews:

                                5 out of 5 stars a pathbreaking biography.......2004-06-13

Long neglected by critics and historians, Victor Serge was one of the last century's greatest political novelists and a participant in some of its most epochal events. This is the first full-length biography and Weissman brilliantly mines the newly-opened Comintern archives to recount Serge's heroic battle against Stalinist lies and deceptions.

4 out of 5 stars Not A Great Book But About A Fascinating Person and Time.......2002-02-21

Victor Serge was one of the few early Bolsheviks who had the honesty to speak out when he saw the revolution degenerate into totalitarian oppression accompanied by hysterical witch hunts, brutal repression of dissent, forced transfer of entire populatons, massive economic failure and the murder of millions. He was lucky to escape with his life after an internal exile. He was a prolific writer of both political essays and fiction. He had complete integrity and, it appears, utter fearlessness.

The author is devoted to her subject and clearly has devoted much time and attention to locating and reviewing the primary sources. She seems to be at the forefront of scholarship in this area. The book, however, was a bit disappointing. There was little or nothing about Serge's childhood and early years--when we first encounter him in the book it is 1919 and he is almost 30 (although there is a very little about his activities as an anarchist in France and Spain). I would have liked to know about his youth and young adulthood. Also, the narrative is not smooth. There were a few instances where (I think) virtually the same passage was repeated a few pages after it first appeared. Does anyone edit these books anymore? On a related point, the style is not elegant.

In addition, the author's perspective is clouded by her evident position as a true believer in socialism, albeit an opponent of tyranny a la Stalin. The result is that the author simply assumes that Serge's political and economic thought was sound and never stops to explain it, much less to subject it to any form of critical analysis.

That said, it is important that we read about Serge and the author has really done a commendable job. You will want to read more about him and by him when you have finished!

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Heartbreaking.......2006-02-02

I'm doing research on child prodigies for my newest book. The whole area of intellegence has always intrigued me, so this is painless research. More than that, this book, and the man it's about, William Sidis, is fascinating. And heartbreaking.

According to this book, William Sidis' IQ was estimated at 300. He was simply brilliant, going through gradeschool in three months and high school in 6 weeks. He took the entrance exam to Harvard at age nine and passed, but wasn't allowed entrance until age 11. And because of his gift he was hounded & ridiculed by the media from a young age until he basically went underground as an adult, hiding his genuis. It's very sad and will make you ashamed of what we sometimes do to one another. In this case, a great intellect and all his possible achievements were lost.

                                  A fascinating, fascinating book.

5 out of 5 stars Gigantic Genius Gone Goofy.......2004-11-13

You will become ga ga admiring the staggeringly stupendous intellect of super-precocious child prodigy William James Sidis in this excellent biography. He was an academic mega-genius whose social ineptitude in society is profoundly disturbing.
Sidis was named in honor of the famous Harvard University philosopher/psychologist William James. The last name of William James Sidis was a palindrome: it could be spelled the same forward as well as backwards. Similarly and ironically his mind was palindromic: in the realm of cerebralization and intellectual thought there may have been no greater a prodigious potential in the history of the world ( rivaling Aristotle, Leonardo da Vinci, Einstein, Plato, Socrates, etc. ). Tragically, the mind-boggling potential of Sidis was predominantly unfulfilled. Palindromic Sidis was a radical of socially aberrant behavior. He was a prodigy in reverse who revolted from the extravagant expectations thrust upon him. Consequently Sidis went from "great expectations" to "great expectorations". He was socially spit upon, chastised and shunned as an adult for his eccentrically bizarre behabior. He was the Ultima Thule of lost talent performing such menial jobs as being a janitor. He was a contradiction of intellectual and behavioral dyslexia. He was analogous to computer overload: akin to HAL in the classic sci-fi film "2001: A Space Odyssey": super spaced out and gone awry. When one is an extreme case of extreme cases they may very well beome a social basket case.
I can deeply empathize with William James Sidis because I have resided in the socially isolated stratosphere of extreme intellectual genius my entire life. I have been descibed as being "too brilliant for my own good". Intense social introversion and extreme hypersensitivity do not mutually commingle with the ultra-psychological stress imposed upon a genius when other individuals are too demanding, too scornful, too mocking and too unsympathetically impersonal.

4 out of 5 stars A book that makes you think..........2002-06-02

This is definitely a good read.

Although I have just barely finished reading half of the book, I felt compelled to say something about it.

Sometimes it just pains my heart to see how the society, in a sense, failed the genius. It comes natural for "normal" people (people with such genes tend to have an edge in survival perspective in terms of natural selection) to deride and hurt (sometimes on purpose, sometimes unwittingly) a person who is superior in non-social matters but lacks adequate development in social matters. William James Sidis clearly fell victim in this category.

Also, this biography tells us that intelligence needs to be accompanied by wisdom to fulfill its due expectations.

Clearly W J Sidis is very intelligent (intelligent in some specific areas like maths and languages); but he does not seem to be very wise in a broader, higher sense; that is, his intelligence helps him see "trees" in a much clearer way than his fellow beings, but lack of wisdom fails him in seeing the "forest/wood", i.e. the BIG PICTURE. His own version of a constitution in a fictitious "perfect" (in his eyes) society (Hesperia), notwithstanding sophisticated in logical rules and bearing some other merits in terms of form, is naive and myopic in content.

In a way, he is very stubborn to have such notions as "The word art means very little to me" and "why will people waste so much energy on statuary, painting, drawing, etching and the like" (p. 109 of the book). Frankly, I fail to note similar traits in other accomplished prodigies like Stuart Mill, Wiener, Russell and Einstein. -- Lack of appreciation (and even contempt) for other forms of achievements in humanity will sooner or later limit a prodigy's success in one way or another because it denotes an unbalanced development among numerous dimensions of human nature.

As of the root of the Sidis "tragedy" (saying tragedy might be overstated), clearly the way his parents raised him contributed largely to the outcome. And the inappropriate amount of attention had been directed to him since his very early childhood, a fatal error in comparison to the shrewd way John Stuart Mill was brought up by his father...

I might have more to say when I finish the book.

5 out of 5 stars The only perfect life is one lived in seclusion........2001-12-28

This is the second time that I've been drawn to this unique book. Having just enough in common with Billy Sidis (membership in two high IQ societies and extreme introversion) I can recognise the "ring of truth" to this account. I know from first hand experience how this society, especially the public schools, go out of their way to haze and torture the gifted and the "different"- no matter how hard one tries to keep a low profile. Indeed, Sidis's motto, "The only perfect life is one lived in seclusion" is also my own, learned from hard experience.

As for William James Sidis himself, here was a person who lectured on 4th dimensional mathematics at Harvard at the age of 11. It was said that he probably spoke every language of mankind- and actually invented entirely new languages of his own. He wrote the first book on cosmology that ever theorised the existence of black holes. He was the first to see the correlation of the 11 year sunspot cycle on both climate and human behavior. He wrote some of the first "alternative histories" of the United States (rejecting official proganda.) He had absolute contempt for capitalism and corporations (he seems to have been incapable of telling lies or exploiting other people.) He recognised the fundamental contribution of Native Americans to mainstream American culture long before anyone else. He was absolutely convinced not only that extraterestrial intelligence existed, but that it had to exist. He wrote seriously of Atlantis while "serious" scholars scoffed at the idea. He totally rejected formal theology and religion- while having no doubt that a higher power existed...

One of the chapters of this book is entitled "Sidis an Avatar?" While William Sidis himself would have automatically and violently rejected such a claim, I personally wonder if it might have not been close to the truth....

4 out of 5 stars Interesting read, here is where to find more..........1999-12-13

I've read this book once and I always enjoy leafing through it. However, I am always saddened that so much that Mr. Sidis did was lost (for example his science fiction story). A group of us individuals have started compiling information on him and are in the process of getting his "The Animate and th Inanimate" online for all to peruse. One and all are invited to email to get more information. Good day. [Thanks also to the reviewer below for the recommendation for the book "Accidental Genius"]
