                    Book Description

Completely updated and expanded to reflect the exploding use of electronics in training program design and delivery, this much-anticipated second edition is at once a sourcebook of tested training principles and practices, and a complete guide to developing a full-fledged training function in any business organization. Training expert Lawrence S. Munson draws freely upon checklists, diagrams, and "war stories" from veteran trainers to illuminate every aspect of managing and coducting training seminar programs. He shows readers how to first gain the support of management and improve the training climate, then details exactly how to organize and staff a training department, and decide when and where to go outside for outside help.

                    5 out of 5 stars A GREAT ONE.......2005-07-14

I usually dont like this format of books where everything is too dense and compressed but this book changed everything.
The book contains a huge amount of high yield facts many of which i had on my exam.
Very well organized with a great section in pharma' and pathology but kind of weak on physiology.
I read it a couple of times during the months before the exam and in the last week it was my only study source.
All together a great one ,a must have book for anyone taking the first step.

                    5 out of 5 stars thumbs up.......2005-06-09

Obviously some of the previous people who have written reviews about first aid are greatly misinformed as how to study for step 1. No one book will cover everything you need to know for the test, that should have learned this over a period of 2 years in medical school.

First Aid does not "claim" to cover it all, all it does is cover very high yield stuff that you really should be taking into the test IN ADDITION to more information.

Do not be fooled, FIRST AID is necessary. Perhaps this is the reason why EVERY medical student taking the USMLE owns at least one edition. This being the case, you are doing yourself great harm by not using a book that everyone is using, especially since this is a standardized exam.

4 out of 5 stars USMLE First Aid STEP 1.......2005-01-29

For all foreign doctors, this book is a goal if you want to have short information and help to remind the correct answer in the test. All the Docs must have one.

3 out of 5 stars Necessary, but by itself not sufficient.......2004-07-27

A must-have guide for Step 1 prep. But by itself, not sufficient to cover the nitty-gritty details found on The Test. Best used as starting point in January or February, then add BRS review series. Mix in Kaplan QBank along the way. Alternatively, instead of BRS, you may want to review your own class notes on pathophysiology (which I did, and found quite helpful, even though it's more time-consuming). And, be sure to keep up with current health events in the news (they show up on the boards)!

2 out of 5 stars Forget about First Aid........2004-07-18

First Aid for Step 1 is like Netter's -- not very good and highly overrated. The book is a mess of random information that has no connection and no flow to it, and is therefore difficult, frustrating and low-yield. The only good part of the book are the images but these can be found online (WebPath) for free. I skimmed First Aid once, tossed it aside and spent all of my time with Step-Up which is a MUCH better book.

                          Book Description

Silicon has been and will most probably continue to be the dominant material in semiconductor technology. Although the defect-free silicon single crystal is one of the best understood systems in materails science, its electrochemistry to many people is still a kind of "alchemy". This view is partly due to the interdisciplinary aspects of the topic: Physics meets chemistry at the silicon-electrolyte interface.
This book gives a comprehensive overview of this important aspect of silicon technology as well as examples of applications ranging from photonic crystals to biochips. It will serve materials scientists as well as engineers involved in silicon technology as a quick reference with its more than 150 technical tables and diagrams and ca. 1000 references cited for easy access of the original literature.

                                Book Description

There has been a revived interest in Raman amplification due to the availability of high pump powers and improvements in small core size fibers. Two general categories of Raman amplifiers exist: distributed and discrete, also known as DRAs. They improve the noise figure and reduce the nonlinear penalty of the amplifier, allowing for longer amplifiers spans, higher bit rates, closer channel spacings, and operation near the zero dispersion wavelength. DRAs are already becoming commonplace in most long-haul networks. Consequently, Raman amplifiers should see a wide range of deployment in the next few years. This edited monograph is written by leading experts in this area and is the first book entirely devoted to Raman amplification. Three sections include extensive background on Raman physics, descriptions of sub-systems and modules utilizing Raman technology, and a review of current state-of-the-art systems. Technologies presented include applications for long-haul and ultra-long-haul submarine, terrestrial, soliton, and high-speed systems. This book will be a resource for scientists and optical engineers in optoelectronics, fiber optics, telecommunication, and optical networks.

puts suspense into high gear, taking readers on a seductively twisting thrill ride into the heart of danger and desire -- to a place where nothing is as it seems.

She found the perfect lover. . . . Jamie Kellogg's life is at a crossroads. Stuck in a dead-end job, the divorced twenty-nine-year-old has been ruled by the voices of her judgmental mother and her perfectionist sister long enough. Now she's hearing only the sexy whispers of the thrillingly handsome stranger in her bed, the man she met in a Florida bar. His name is Brad Fisher, and he's telling her everything she's been dying to hear: She's gorgeous. She's smart. She's adventurous. Quitting her job and joining Brad on a spontaneous road trip, Jamie's ready for the ride of her life. But this trip has one destination: a run-down Ohio house on Mad River Road, where vengeance will come home at last -- and where someone will pay for the secrets and lies of the past. . . .

                                4 out of 5 stars Terrific Story...Abrupt Ending!.......2007-09-24

I enjoy Fielding's writing. I have read a few of her other pieces and find her to keep the story moving at a very fast pace as she presents the reader with several twists and turns. This work was no different. After having read her "Whispers and Lies" (which has one of the best endings of modern day fiction) I turned the pages of this novel faster than the Pope passes out holy cards, and I was rather disappointed as I got to the climax because it was so abrupt (however, not bad), it left me with a sense of wanting more and asking myself...Is this it? That's OK Joy, you kept me going and I enjoyed the ride. I will look forward to reading another one of her novels in the near future.

I've been a Joy Fielding fan for many years. I've read all of her books. She's one of my favorite authors. I liked this book. It was not as good as "The First Time", "Missing Pieces" or "Whispers and Lies" but it was a lot better than the last two books she wrote. I read this book in one day - I couldn't put it down. Jamie was very dumb but I did feel sorry for her near the end of the book. I liked Lily and the detective. I did not like the ending at all. I agree with the reviewer who said it was too abrupt. I can't wait to read "Heartstopper."

                                4 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining.......2007-05-02

I really loved this book. I can normally tell you what happens in the end by the 2nd chapter, but this one really threw me a curvball. I was happy with the ending and with the other characters viewpoints throughout the book. A little dark, but very hard to put down.

3 out of 5 stars Suspenseful but maddening.......2007-04-27

I'm somewhat ambivalent about this novel. I wanted an easy-to-read thriller to entertain me on a rainy spring evening, and that's what I got - Joy Fielding knows how to create suspense, and the result is a real page-turner - but her characters drove me up the wall.
The main character (no way can she be called a "heroine") is an idiot. Now, I certainly expect flawless characters (who'd be terribly boring as well as unrealistic) but I do expect the main character to be sympathetic, someone I can relate to or at least understand).
Jamie Kellogg is a divorcee whose marriage to a man she barely knew (she married him two weeks after they met) was an unqualified disaster. At the beginning of the novel, she's just learned her latest boyfriend is married and has no intention of leaving his wife. Does this make Jamie more cautious? A little warier, a little more discerning?
Nope, not our gal. She meets a good-looking man in a bar and, after spending the night with him, decides he is Mr. Right and agrees to go on a cross-country road trip with him. Later - too late - she finds out he is a murderous psychopath, recently released from prison. Oh well.
One of the criticisms I have had of Joy Fielding's books is the characterization of the men she portrays - almost all of them are either first-class jerks who torment women or psychopaths who torment women. However, her female characters don't come off any better. They are invariably "professional victims" - women who are passive, let things happen to them instead of taking control of their lives and making things happen, and end up feeling used, abused and terribly sorry for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Deception and Naiveté'.......2007-04-05

The plot in this novel could happen to anyone. The women in this novel are a reminder to all women to guide their hearts and their bodies.

Bill Turque's biography of Vice President Al Gore will probably be remembered mainly for its charge that Gore smoked pot much more often in the 1970s than he has previously acknowledged. Yet this allegation--delivered by apparently credible sources--is just a tiny snippet from Gore's life story, as told by this Newsweek reporter. Turque begins with Gore's childhood years in Washington as the son of a senator and traces his steady climb to become the Democratic Party's favored candidate for president in 2000. The author admires Gore's liberal politics, but is also frustrated by what he considers the vice president's tendency to trim:
Gore is an usually thoughtful politician who has been an important, even prophetic voice on issues like global warming, arms control, and the changes wrought by the Information Age. But his life and career have also been punctuated by separations never quite achieved, and by bold strokes never quite converted into personal or political liberation.
Turque recounts a number of Gore scandals, most notably his questionable fundraising at Buddhist temples and heavy-handed calls to party donors (over which he famously claimed there was "no controlling legal authority"). And these stories clearly trouble Turque: Gore, like President Clinton, plays "games with the truth. But where Clinton's lies have been those of self-protection and survival, Gore's have by and large been ones of self-aggrandizement and glorification." Overall, Inventing Al Gore is a balanced and authoritative portrayal of a man whose most important years may lie ahead. --John J. Miller

                                Book Description

Why did Al Gore, after angry opposition to the Vietnam War, submit to the draft? What happened in Vietnam that made him sullen and bitter? After renouncing politics, what set him back on the track mapped out for him? What made him claim (falsely) that he invented the Internet? How closely is he allied with the tobacco industry? What is the real nature of his partnership with Bill Clinton? How was it altered by the Lewinsky affair?
INVENTING AL GORE addresses these issues and more as it unveils the true motivations, ideals, and idiosyncracies of one of Washington's most inscrutable men. Bill Turque, who covered both of Gore's vice presidential campaigns and the Clinton White House, draws on extensive access to Gore's key advisers, friends, and family. He unmasks a man who in private can sing and dance to George Strait's music but in public measures every comment and gesture with legendary caution. As Turque details, Gore's great political albatross -- a lack of empathy -- was hatched during his lonely childhood as the product of ambitious political parents who groomed him for the presidency. Turque's keen analysis also uncovers the genesis of Gore's questionable fund-raising and of a political platform laden with worthy but emotionally safe planks such as bioethics, global warming, and the Internet. In addition, Inventing Al Gore illuminates how personal tragedies have shaped his political life and the remarkable influence that women, from his mother to Naomi Wolf, have had on his career.
INVENTING AL GORE reveals Gore to be one of the most intelligent, idealistic men in Washington, yet one who is repeatedly prone to prevarication, exaggeration, and avoidance of hard issues. Turque offers a meticulously researched narrative filled with colorful, insightful details that sharpen the debate over whether Gore can outgrow his limitations and excel in the office he has prepared for all his life.

3 out of 5 stars Al Gore's Heritage is Top Notch........2005-08-22

Loved the pictures on cover and in the photo section; it's hard to imagine he was ever that young. As a mother of three boys, I can safely say that he was a cute little boy, and was trained to become president of the United States from the age of four. He was too cautious about being called a liberal that he bent over a bit too far the other way. I was called a 'liberal' recently because of my version of the MARCH OF THE PENGUINS movie. I said, "I am not conservative, either; I am not a Democrat (though I do tend in that direction); I am not a Republican -- I am not political.

In 1989, Al Gore traveled to Antarctica to prove his environmental study of global warming and damage to the ozone layer. To not be an astronomer, he still was very believable. I'm just wondering if he noticed that seventy-mile march those male penguins made to 'mate,' and the seventy-mile march the females made to get food for the young. I hope so. He looked good in that parka, with his hair all wind blown. As the young Nashville reporter, he looked like son, Zach.

The 'flower child' Tipper with her first baby was beautiful in 1971. The family photos were just marvelous. I remember when his dad, Al, Sr. was our Senator from Tennessee. It's hilarious that Clinton had the gall to criticize Al Gore after his loyalty to a corrupt politician (that's why he had the impartial 'stare'!) and erroneously made the statement about his co-pilot & friend's "lack of political instinct." Pauline Gore was the real politician in that family even though it was the dad who was elected. Gore has good political genes and training.

Clinton never was the real president; his wife Hilary was, and held the apron strings. He wasn't very smart anyway, but not appreciating Gore's refusal to say nasty things about him is inhuman. Al Gore would have accummulated more votes and there would have been no question at all about his winning the election if he had just turned his back on Clinton after he lied about Monica ("I did not have sexual relations with that woman!") and campaigned on his own integrity.

He and Tipper became much bigger as they aged; I am getting smaller (lost another 1/2 inch due to osteoporosis), but they are still good looking and dignified people. Al Gore does not need "inventing" as he was a wholesome, mannerly candidate, just not Southern enough to carry his home state. He was well-educated in the East (like our mayor and former mayor) but he did turn his back on us here in Tennessee. If it had been the other way, and he had deserted Clinton's sinking ship, he would have been (maybe still could be) the best President of the United States ever.

2 out of 5 stars Review of notes.......2004-12-30

I'll be brief. I have not read the book, I'm not a big Gore fan. I'm commenting on the mention of Gore "claiming (falsely) to have invented the Internet" in the main review. Check the Daily Howler on that. Search for Gore Internet.

Point: Gore never spoke this famous quote. It was made up. Gore said, "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet." This caught no one's attention because ... IT WAS TRUE. Even Gingrich gave him credit for that.

After the RNC laundered Gore's statement, and spun it dry, the spun-quote was repeated by pundits for 20 months.

That Turque supports this LIE in his book completely disqualifies him from any suspicion of veracity, or pretense to veracity.

Not that I don't believe Gore has spun things, especially his supposed environmental stance. But it would be bad to point that out, because that would make him out to be LESS liberal, and wouldn't serve the attack machine.

Well, Gore's over, but the pundits lying is not.

4 out of 5 stars Both sides of the story............2003-02-01

seems evident in this book. I feel the author made an honest attempt to write an unbiased account of Al Gore. His strengths are demonstrated as well as his faults. The only weak spot in the book is that the 2000 election wasn't covered.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent account of an enigma.......2002-11-21

Al Gore recently emerged from "mending fences" in Tennessee to launch a media-driven national charm offensive that he hopes will land him in the White House in 2004. Even though the former vice president seems more at ease these days as he exchanges barbs with the likes of David Letterman, Gore still comes across as uncomfortable and at times coached (did handlers teach him to laugh?) largely because he is the enigma Bill Turque describes in Inventing Al Gore: A Biography. For those who love and despise the former vice president, and for the vast majority in whom he inspires absolutely no emotion one way or the other, Turque's biography, written before the 2000 election debacle, remains relevant today. After you finish Turque's fair and balanced account of Gore, you will be pumped full of the substantive and trivial and won't be any closer to knowing who the former vice president is than you were in 2000, 1996, 1992, 1988, or last week on Larry King. This in no way detracts from Turque's biography, and if anything proves the author knew his subject is a mystery. Neither David Maraniss nor anyone else has been able to unravel this complex politician, and unlike Turque they didn't have the insight to know it is impossible.

4 out of 5 stars Good background reading.......2001-01-02

This biography does just give lip service to the politician's childhood. The author explains the world in which Al Gore grew up. It describes pieces of his father's life in a way which shows you where Al picked up many of his mannerisms. You will see where the candidate came from.

After reading through this, I know that Al Gore is not as Green as his book would lead you to believe. He does listen to businesses and has accepted money. This is no different than any other candidate. This book brings all of this to your attention so that you can make your own informed decision.

The tone and flow are good. I had no trouble following the narrative or understanding what point the author was trying to make. Too often, an author has his own axe to grind and steps away from informing the reader so that the reader can make his or her own decision. Turque's style makes this a good read.

Edward F. Prichard Jr. was a powerful figure in both the Roosevelt and Truman administrations, but in 1948 his political career was shattered by an indictment for election fraud. FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover's personal dislike of Prichard had ensured that, once his name came up, the FBI pursued the case with full vigor; after the conviction, Prichard was unable to appeal to the Supreme Court because too many of the justices had to recuse themselves from hearing a case involving their friend. (He did, however, receive a pardon from President Truman.) Tracy Campbell's richly detailed biography shows how after decades of political exile Prichard was able to redeem himself as an advisor and later as a champion for education reform in his native Kentucky. A compelling morality tale with a quintessentially American setting, Short of the Glory explores an under-recognized facet of mid-20th-century politics and the men who carried it out.

4 out of 5 stars The Man Who Might Have Been Ed Prichard.......2005-07-28

Who would of thought that here in the third millennium we would still take time to read about Ed Prichard, whose life story will be linked through eternity with a third rate felony-and a blundering, ham-handed felony at that? Prichard is dead more than 20 years now, as are almost all those who loved and hated him. He never held public office-indeed, more generally, never came close to fulfilling the promise of his admirers. Why would anyone care?

To this question, it is possible to give an uncharitable reply. Kentucky, one might say, is a place with more past than future. To dwell on a footnote may be read as saying: we almost amounted to something, we could have been a contender.

And yet, and yet. And yet we have the testimony of the best and the brightest that Prich himself was the best and the brightest; if not as an actor, perhaps as a thinker and certainly as a talker.. Indeed, I had the privilege to observe Prich in what might be called his rehabilitation phase: the early 60s when his friends were trying to ease him back from obloquy and exile onto the political stage. I will add my testimony to those of legions who swore that Prichard in full spate was simply the greatest three-ring oratorical circus of which a simple country boy might dream, his whooshes of insight keeping easy company with his flashes of savage wit. No wonder he won the affection of Felix Frankfurter, of Phil Graham, of-good heavens, is this true?-of Sir Isaiah Berlin.

Indeed: Berlin was once his roommate and like so many was stunned and horrified when Prich was convicted by a Kentucky jury The details are there Tracy Campbell's account, along with a great deal else one may have remembered or forgotten about the politics of Kentucky in the last Century. Campbell tells it all earnestly and unflinchingly, and a strangely compelling story it remains.

Is there a larger context for Prich's story? Probably not a great one, but by a stretch, you could fit it into more general story of the history of the New Deal. It was here, after all, that Prich occupied center stage: as the brilliant young scamp who enchanted Felix Frankfurter, and who put himself at the elbow of Robert Jackson, of Fred Vinson, of Jimmie Byrnes (although both Jackson and Byrnes stayed aloof, and even Vinson saw Prich's limits). One can, at least with caution, take Prich as a kind of symbol for what was right and wrong with those years: the brilliance, the optimism, the energy, together with an overlarge dose of self-admiration, bordering on downright narcissism. Prich was, after all, as dazzling as they say he was. But he was an appalling abuser of friendship, a serial shirker of duties, and at best no more than a mediocre husband and father. Even after he started taking fees from the strip miners, he never really paid his taxes. Indeed, one of the remarkable parts of the Prich story is the way so many people were taken in by him-not merely by his skills at rhetoric and dialectic (which were indisputable) but by the notion that these virtues somehow translated into political gravitas.

Campbell does a conscientious job of surveying the evidence surrounding Prichard's pivotal bout with ballot-stuffing in 1948. Laudably, he hesitates to draw any grand conclusions. I will indulge myself a bit more. Prich came back to Kentucky touted as the next governor, senator, president-offices to which (says Campbell), absent his "lapse" he "would certainly" have risen. But by Campell's own testimony, this is nonsense. Campbell himself says that Prich "had not the ambition or the personality for such posts." Quite right: probably nobody knew this better than Prich himself. His friends saw him as the next Roosevelt; he knew he was closer to Peter Pan. By sticking his hand in a ballot box, he relieved himself of all these impositions: he may have left his friends bewildered and disappointed, but he gave himself the freedom to remain forever young.

5 out of 5 stars A Greek Tragedy Played out in Postwar Kentucky.......2004-05-11

Edward F. Prichard, Jr.'s life makes for high drama; this excellent biography makes for engrossing and informative reading. "Prich" was yet another of the terribly bright Frankfurter students at Harvard Law School in the late 1930's who gravitated to Washington, first as a Supreme Court clerk to Frankfurter, and later with involvement in New Deal and wartime public service. The Greek chorus appears when Prichard returns to his home state of Kentucky to practice law. The book superbly recounts his conviction in connection with a 1948 vote-tampering scandal, his incarceration, and his eventual return to the practice of law and a role as respected educational reformer in Kentucky. Unfortunately, serious illness inflicted near blindness and other frailties which ultimately caused an early death at the age of 69. The reader can only sit back and wonder as to why one with such unlimited promise and talents chose the course he did. Nonetheless, as the book traces Prich's life, it provides an fascinating perspective on Harvard Law, Frankfurter, the wartime FDR administration, the early presidency of Truman, and the rise of the super lawyer-lobbyists such as Thomas Corcoran. One's time is well invested in reading this volume.

5 out of 5 stars The Brightest of His Generation.......2003-08-12

Ed Prichard was called "the brightest of our generation" by no less than Katherine Graham. He was Felix Frankfurer's first law clerk, and served ably and brilliantly in the Roosevelt and Truman administrations.

Then came 1948. In Texas, Lyndon Johnson won a Senatorial election, as the saying goes, by the votes of 49 dead Mexicans. That same year, Prichard helped stuff ballot boxes in his home county, Bourbon County, Kentucky, for a forgettable Senate candidate who had the election locked up anyway. But, hounded by J. Edgar Hoover for his "socialist" views (such as championing civil rights for blacks and an eight hour work day, with a decent minimum wage), Prichard, not Johnson, went to prison and was disbarred.

This short, but imminently well researched book is his story, recounting all his sparkling brilliance, the arrogance that helped bring him down, and his ultimate redemption as the father of the education reform movement in Kentucky. This is an elegantly written and masterfully documented history from a first rate young historian. The biggest revelation is the story of J. Edgar Hoover's targeting of Prichard, which was gleaned from declassified documents, and never previously reported.

If this book teaches us that we are all flawed, it also teaches that we are all capable of redemption. This is one of the finest biographies I have ever read.

                                5 out of 5 stars Well-researched and insightful.......2001-01-15

This book tells well of a brilliant student, high in the ranks of his class at harvard Law, law clerk to Justice Frankfurter, holding responsible positions in the Government in wartime Washington, who by an unbelievably reckless and stupid act destroyed his career, then , after years of struggle redeemed himself before his death in 1984. This is a most worthwhile read for anyone interested in the law or in Kentucky politics,or in the shakers and movers in Washington in the 1940s.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent study of a failed genius.......1999-05-10

In this accessible, informative biography, Campbell presents the tragic story of one of the brightest stars on the 20th century American political scene. A man of acknowledged genius, fragile ego, and an almost childlike attitude, Prichard was seen by many as the most gifted and promising of the new generation of liberal politicians that arose out of the New Deal. Though his hopes for political office were ended by J. Edgar Hoover's irrational vendetta against him, Campbell makes it clear that the person who ultimately brought about Prichard's downfall was Prichard himself. This is an excellent book about the lofty heights and tragic depths that a man could sink to, and I highly recommend it to any history buff or political wonk.

Salmon Chase is a most complex man and the age in which he lived his adult life is fascinating to anyone interested in U. S. History. Many historians have given us biographies of S. P. Chase, the editor Dr. Niven's being one of the best, but however good they are cursed with the author's inability to overcome his humanity and predjudices. It is forthis reason the collected works of an historic figure are so important. Chase led an active life as governor of Ohio, defender at the bar of abolitionists, anti-slavery senator with his congressional colleague Joshua Giddings, as Lincoln's Secy. of the Treasury, as intriguer in the war in Texas, and finally as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court upon the death of Taney (a break for which Lincoln had waited some time).

For a better understanding of the man and his tumultuous times I highluy recommend all the volumes of the Salmon P. Chase Papers.

The author is very good at telling stories about events that happened and people he worked with during his RR career, many of them humorous in nature. I got a kick out of it and wish it had been longer..........(or maybe a part 2 ???).
