the price must be wrong.......2004-06-01
over two thousand dollars for a paperback book?
good dictionary for practitioners.......2003-01-28
A lot of info in portable form. Better than Bantam or the other lightweight medical dictionaries you find in the health section of regular bookstores. There are some acronyms and abbreviations in the inside covers.

I'm very satisfied with this dictionary, because I can find anything I need in it. By the way, I am a medical student.

Book Description
This book provides a synthesis of the patterns, causes and consequences of biodiversity in cold-dominated ecosystems. The first chapters document patterns and causes of genetic and species diversity of plants and animals emphasizing the interaction between historical and contemporary factors in governing biodiversity. The second section addresses how biotic diversity has changed in the past, how it is currently changing, and how it will likely respond to future changes in climate and land use. The third section treats both the conceptual basis and the evidence that biodiversity influences the functioning of arctic and alpine ecosystems. Also included are the implications of terrestrial patterns of biodiversity for landscape patterns and for patterns of diversity in aquatic ecosystems.

Voices from the Fields : Children of Migrant Farmworkers Tell Their Stories

Book Description
After dark in a Mexican border town, a father holds open a hole in a wire fence as his wife and two small boys crawl through.
So begins life in the United States for many people every day. And so begins this collection of twelve autobiographical stories by Santa Clara University professor Francisco Jimnez, who at the age of four illegally crossed the border with his family in 1947.
"The Circuit," the story of young Panchito and his trumpet, is one of the most widely anthologized stories in Chicano literature. At long last, Jimnez offers more about the wise, sensitive little boy who has grown into a role model for subsequent generations of immigrants.
These independent but intertwined stories follow the family through their circuit, from picking cotton and strawberries to topping carrots--and back agai--over a number of years. As it moves from one labor camp to the next, the little family of four grows into ten. Impermanence and poverty define their lives. But with faith, hope, and back-breaking work, the family endures.
"A jewel of a book"--Rolando Hinojosa-Smith
"These stories are so realistic they choke the heart."--Rudolfo Anaya
A collection of twelve short stories presented from the perspective of a young boy, in which the author narrates his childhood experiences growing up in a family of Mexican migrant farmworkers.
Customer Reviews:
La pura verdad-the whole truth.......2006-06-01
This is a great family book.I am American Caucasian and my husband is a Mexican imigrant. We read this story out loud to one another, and while it is writen (very well) in simple English so that any reader could probably read it,we enjoyed it imensly.
I can tell you that so much of this story corrolated with our friends and family and was very touching, but brought on a lot of chuckles as well.A great family read.
Great Book.......2006-03-20
This book was very interesting. I loved the way this book shows how Mexicans suffer, struggle and work hard to get what they need to survive. This book has a good way of showing the different types of experiences the family goes through. It gets to a point where you get so into the book that you get frightened of what could happen to the family next. You don't know if the family is going to get caught by the border patrol or if you're going to be able to find a job for the next season. You just don't know if your going to be able to survive the only thing you have in your hands is hope and faith.
There was nothing that I could hate about this book the only thing that I hated was to read about how bad this family suffered. It hurts to see how your own people gets discriminated but, it's ok because this family like many other Mexicans have still succeeded after all the things they have to go trough, like being discriminated. Other than that there is nothing to dislike about this book.
I would definitely recommend this book for everybody especially for people who like this family is an illegal immigrant in this country. I would like for the anti-immigrant people to read this book so they can see that no matter what they do to try to stop the immigrants from succeeding the immigrants will never stop trying no matter what they do to try to stop them. This book is a great book I am sure that this story has repeated itself many times by other Mexican families. I am also sure that it will keep repeating itself for many years, but there is always a limit and the day will come when the Mexicans will be treated the same as everybody else in this country. There are many illegal immigrants that have been more successful in life than the people that are legal in this country, and it kills the anti-immigrants to know this is true.
Want to know what it's like?.......2006-03-16
This book is a great place to start if you are interested in learning about the life of someone less priviledged than yourself. Perhaps it will help you appreciate the simple pleasures in life and everything that you've got. When you reach the end of the book, you'll be glad Jimenez wrote a sequel (Breaking Through).
Written in a language that is accessible to everyone from grade school to adulthood, Jimenez doesn't exaggerate details or go into a lot of long desriptions. It's simply his memories of his childhood in a migrant family. As all memories go, the book does not flow smoothly from chapter to chapter, but rather gives you snapshots of his life, so take it for what it is and don't worry about the chronology.
As a teacher, this book really helped me appreciate the lives and struggles of many of my students (who lead lives similar to Jimenez in his childhood).
If You're Looking For NO Action..........2006-03-08
It starts out with this Mexican family illegally coming across the border into the United States. When they get to the U.S., they go to a labor camp in California. This first labor camp is probably the best one that they go to. The whole book is about this family moving around to different labor camps during different crop seasons. Every now and then, Francisco and his brother Roberto go to school. Along the way there are more people added to the family. The book doesn't really come to a good ending. It is also kind of hard to understand because it jumps three years into the future at times and then you don't know what's going on.
This was a very good book at some times but most of the time the author put in way too many unnecessary details that make the book kind of boring. This book is exactly like it's sequel, Breaking Through. I would rate this book pretty low if like a lot of action.
The Circuit.......2005-10-14
The Circuit, one of my favorite books, is written by Francisco Jimenez. The Circuit is about a family that lived in El Rancho Blanco, Guadalajara. Francisco and his family moved to the United States crossing the border illegally. When they get to the United States in California they look for work and they work in the fields picking cotton. Francisco's family is always hiding from the border patrol which they call it "la migra." As they go on they move to different places. The reason I read this story is because it held my interest , because I wondered how it would be crossing the border illegally. Also, because some of the story reminds me about when I got here from Mexico. I really recommend this book. It's exciting and it taught me to eat all my food and not throw it away because Francisco's family did't have anything to eat sometimes. I would give this book a ten, and I really loved it a lot and I think you should try it.

Unbroken Spirit

Manufacturer: Lasana Publishing Company

ASIN: 1892227002 |
Product Description
Unbroken Spirit is a 238-page novel. It is the story of a severely emotionally abused young woman who ran away from home at the age of 16 to escape the constant abuse by her father and the sense of hopelessness that she felt in their home. Karena was the only child in the home of the richest man in the farming town of Braxton. Her father cared only for his large businesses and felt that his only child, because she was a girl, was inherently inadequate to take over his important business concerns. She often tried to please her father, but nothing that she ever did was good enough for him. Her alcoholic mother, who was also a victim in that emotionally abusive setting, lacked the ability to protect her daughter. One early morning, a few days after her sixteenth birthday, Karena ran away from her home. She was determined to find a home where there were hope, aspirations and happiness. But the city to which she ran only exacerbated her situation. Instead of providing her solace, it compounded her social problems and subjected her to a life of prostitution, degradation and physical abuse. On several occasions, she came close to losing her life. Through determination and perseverance, she managed not only to overcome these conditions but also to become a prominent attorney. Ultimately, she gained her psychological emancipation by beating her father and his powerful attorney in the biggest trial ever held in their small hometown of Braxton.

Customer Reviews:
In Praise of Economic Illiteracy.......2003-12-13
In voluntary economic transactions one person's gain is always another's loss. That is the lesson of Maude Barlow. It's a compelling argument until you think about a bit. If a foreign company sells goods in Canada at a price lower than that of Canada firms, Barlow would have you believe that all Canadians are worse off. After all, the competition is destroying Canadian jobs. However, while there may be job losses, all Canadian benefit from the lower prices of the imports, allowing us to purchase more goods.
Would the world be better off if the government required all buildings to board up all their windows? After all, the sun "unfairly" competes with the producers of lightbulbs and candles, thus requiring all windows to be boarded up would stimulate these industries. Within Barlow's, and others, such as Linda McQuiag, this is a logical premise. Go read Frederic Bastiat before reading Barlow's book, in simple language he shatters all of her arguments.
Did we read the same book?.......2003-12-07
While other reviewers are certainly entitled to engage in ad hominem attacks, I think they are ridiculous and counterproductive.
This book is very engaging and stimulating. Ms. Barlow expresses complex ideas with ease. She conveys her passions rather convincingly! No easy matter when most people don't have a clue about trade issues, or the collective relinquishment of national sovereignty to all-powerful WTO bureaucrats! Please read this book, and decide for yourself! Don't listen to reviewers with an ax to grind!
It was a fight to finish this book.......2001-05-14
Maude Barlow does not like free trade. Why she has written so many books about hating free trade, and by extension freedom to associate and contract with other people, is a mystery. If she could state just what is so bad about free markets perhaps some meaningful dialogue could take place. Barlow main point is that it is bad if people who run corporations make money, but it is okay is labors make money. What does she favor one group of workers over the other? Well, firstly she does not consider managers to be doing any type of meaningful work, yet she gives no reason for why she believes this. Secondly, like the previous review her dislike of foriegn corporations borders on xenophobia, Barlow knows this and actually states that she is not xenophobic, but making such statement is meaningless given the position she has staked out.
Running on Empty.......1999-08-16
For over 200 pages Barlow repeats every single argument against free trade that she has stated in all of her other works. The difference this time is that she's decided to call it an autobiography.
If you've read any of her past work, Parcel of Rogues or Class Warfare, there is no need to read this book. She trots out her tired old arguments: corporations are bad, markets are bad, foreign ownership is bad. At one point she states that her nationalism is not xenophobic despite the fact that she constantly rails against foriegn ownership: foriegner ownership is bad because the owners are not your own nationality and therefore cannot be trusted, if this isn't xenophobic and potentially racist I don't know what is.
Another odd characteristice of the book is that any proponent of free markets is presented as fools, but any of Barlow formers colleagues who turned their back on her causes are pretty much forgiven.
National Socialists like Barlow should learn some economics and history before they write drivel like this and contribute to deforestation.

New Book About the San Francisco Vigilantes.......2000-10-01
A review from Wild West Magazine, June 2000:
The two largest movements of vigilantism in the American West occurred in 1851 and 1856 San Francisco during the California Gold Rush, and right in the middle of both of them--but not on the vigilantes' side--was one Charles P. ("Dutch Charley") Duane. In '51, the Committee of Vigilance banished Dutch Charley from San Francisco, saying he would face a penalty of death if he returned. Seems he had been involved in at least seven brawls, including the beating and shooting of a French actor named Amedee Fayolle. But the vigilantes disbanded that fall, and Duane was soon back in town and making trouble again. During the next several years, he was involved in at least half a dozen violent incidents. When the San Francisco Committee of Vigilance formed in 1856, it targeted Dutch Charley and once again warned him to leave and never to return under penalty of death.
There were two sides to Dutch Charley, though. He was also a fearless fireman. He played a courageous role in saving much of the St. Francis Hotel from a fiery fate in October 1853 and, less than two months after that, was elected chief engineer of the fire department. When the heat died down after his 1856 banishment from San Francisco, Duane quietly returned to town early in 1860 and, within weeks, was honored during a fire department meeting. Dutch Charley would stay put, become involved in politics again (he had once been a chief henchman for the politically powerful David C. Broderick), and outlast most of his drinking buddies.
John Boessenecker does justice to Dutch Charley's colorful story in 50 pages, which constitutes the "Introduction." It has to be one of the longest and best introductions you'll find in a Western history book and serves as more than a warm up for Duane's own memoirs, originally published in the San Francisco Examiner in 1881 and now published for the first time in book form. Duane's 100-page account, as Boessenecker describes it, "provides a firsthand viewpoint of one of the most outspoken opponents of vigilance in San Francisco." Highpoints include getting Duane's take on a double hanging by the vigilantes on May 22, 1856, and on his own capture soon afterward for refusing to "go and bow down to the Vigilance Committee." Boessenecker also provides detailed explanatory notes that help complete this fascinating look at one man's violent life and one boom city's most violent era.
