Book Description
This introduction to the night sky is for amateur astronomers who desire a deeper understanding of the principles and observations of naked-eye astronomy. It covers topics such as terrestrial and astronomical coordinate systems, stars and constellations, the relative motions of the sky, sun, moon and earth leading to an understanding of the seasons, phases of the moon, and eclipses. Topics are discussed and compared for observers located in both the northern and southern hemispheres. Written in a conversational style, only addition and subtraction are needed to understand the basic principles and a more advanced mathematical treatment is available in the appendices. Each chapter contains a set of review questions and simple exercises to reinforce the reader's understanding of the material. The last chapter is a set of self-contained observation projects to get readers started with making observations about the concepts they have learned. William Charles Millar, currently Professor of Astronomy at Grand Rapids Community College in Michigan, has been teaching the subject for almost twenty years and is very involved with local amateur astronomy groups. Millar also belongs to The Planetary Society and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific and has traveled to Europe and South America to observe solar eclipses. Millar holds a Masters degree in Physics from Western Michigan University.

Book Description
Chemistry-The Game Played by Atoms by R. G. Thomas Book Summary Imagine that you are part of a group watching an unfamiliar game in progress. Your group does not have a rule book and there is no way to access a list of the game rules. This is exactly the situation in which early chemists found themselves as they step by step unraveled many of the mysterious rules for the game of chemistry. Someone completely unfamiliar with the game of basketball, if completely dedicated to the task, should be able to figure out many of the game rules just by watching the game as it is being played. For the early chemists the situation was much more difficult since neither the players nor the game ball are visible. They knew something was going on but were unable to begin to understand the game until they were able to identify the players and the game ball. The rules for basketball have been changed so that some shots are now worth three points. This change was made by the people regulating the game in an effort to make the game more interesting for the spectators. Other changes have been made to please the companies which advertise on television. Even a unanimous vote by the members of the American Chemical Society cannot change any of the rules of chemistry. Unfortunately there is no way to change the rules of chemistry to make it more interesting although this book attempts to present chemistry in a manner which is more interesting than the exposure many students find in a traditional chemistry course. Chemistry-The Game Played by Atoms is an unique presentation of the evolution of chemistry written for both the general reading public and beginning science students. It is intended for the curious reader, with or without a scientific background. In the author's search of libraries and bookstores he was unable to find a book for the general reader which deals with the overall nature of chemistry. Chemistry-The Game Played by Atoms presents chemistry as a game. Discovering the rules for chemistry has not been easy. Using the observations made by a number of great scientists the reader is led through the discovery of the basic game rules. The concise historical development of the logic leading to the understanding of the chemical elements includes interaction with what might be called the human element. Information about many of the more observant scientists is included to show that they were interesting people rather than just names to be memorized in connection with scientific discoveries. Many of these basic explanations of why chemists believe as they do cannot be found in the usual chemistry textbooks.

Book Description
In this novel of family and redemption, a mother struggles to save her eighteen-year-old daughter from the devastating consequences of mental illness by forcing her to deal with her bipolar disorder. New York Times best-selling author Bebe Moore Campbell draws on her own powerful emotions and African-American roots, showcasing her best writing yet.
Trina suffers from bipolar disorder, making her paranoid, wild, and violent. Watching her child turn into a bizarre stranger, Keri searches for assistance through normal channels. She quickly learns that a seventy-two hour hold is the only help you can get when an adult child starts to spiral out of control. After three days, Trina can sign herself out of any program.
Fed up with the bureaucracy of the mental health community and determined to save her daughter by any means necessary, Keri signs on for an illegal intervention. The Program is a group of radicals who eschew the psychiatric system and model themselves after the Underground Railroad. When Keri puts her daughter’s fate in their hands, she begins a journey that has her calling on the spirit of Harriet Tubman for courage. In the upheaval that follows, she is forced to confront a past that refuses to stay buried, even as she battles to secure a future for her child.
Bebe Moore Campbell’s moving story is for anyone who has ever faced insurmountable obstacles and prayed for a happy ending, only to discover she’d have to reach deep within herself to fight for it.
Customer Reviews:
Pulsating.......2007-05-27
An excellent story in which the reader is taken down that dark pathway of mental illness. The suffering Keri has to undergo is palpable and we weep with her as in order to get help for her bi-polar daughter, Trina, she traverses a complicated system full of mindless bureaucracy. Many other intense subjects are dealt with in this novel as well.
Superb writing style. I liked those metaphors of slavery time, especailly the final one about Ol' Harriet. Well done! Ms Campbell will surely live on in her works.
72 Hour Hold.......2007-05-15
I work in the mental health field and as such, deal with a variety of people suffering from various mental health issues. I was very excited to see a writer try and bring a human touch to such complex subject matter. Knowing that the author was Bebe Moore Campbell, gave me reason to believe that the book would be thouroughly researched, compassionate and "ring with a voice of truth". I was not disappointed. Mrs. Campbell's ability to bring her character's to life has always been a joy for me.
In this novel, Campbell focuses on a mother's love for her daughter, who has been thrown into a purgatory of demons. Although this is a story of mental illiness, it is a love story in its own right. The love a mother has for her child is one of the most enduring emotions one can have. The world lost a beautiful voice with the sudden death of Mrs. Campbell. I am so glad she had the opportunity to delve into this subject and leave such a legacy for those who are trying to understand the anguish their loved ones face on a daily basis.
Much Needed!.......2007-05-14
This book was painful to read at times because of the content, but it is an excellent book! Dealing with mental disease has always been a stigma in our society. This book touches on some of that stigma, but gives us an insight on how a few families deal with schizophrenia and bipolar disease.
The writing is excellent and I recommend it highly for all to read, but especially for those who have contact with persons who have mental illnesses. Although it is fiction, it hits on many very real points.
Mental illness and people of color.......2007-05-07
Pretty good book about how we deal with mental illness. Most of us try to not to deal with it, especially if its in your family. Great depiction of the trials and tribulations of dealing with it
Well written, but flawed.......2007-05-01
As a knowledgeable consumer, some things about this book bothered me. It is true that Campbell created some multi-dimensional characters: for instance, the narrator, Keri, and her exes. However, I was so disappointed by how one-dimensional Trina was. 90% of the time she was a psychotic monster. Now I understand very well how important medication is, but it's not like a consumer can't ever be well without it, even if it's just for short periods. Campbell treated both Trina and Angelica as less than human, IMO. I think when she was manic, Trina behaved like a sociopath and Campbell confused this personality disorder with mental illness. All the consumers in her book were violent, often towards their own loving parents. I don't know where she got the idea that that was the typical, because it isn't. Also, not all consumers suffer from nightmares. And I was very disappointed that Trina was never very contrite, not even at the end of the book.
All in all, I think Campbell has a way with words, but some of her impressions were off. We don't need people thinking we are all dangerous; that stigma has got to go!

Soldier, Statesman, Peacemaker: Leadership Lessons From George C. Marshall
ASIN: 0801858143 |
Book Description
George C. Marshall served as chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff during World War II and as secretary of state during the rebuilding of Europe. A master of mobilization and organization, he did as much as any national leader in achieving Allied victory in the war; afterward, as architect of the Marshall Plan, he won the Nobel Peace Prize for that massive and highly effective effort on behalf of Western European economic recovery. Winston Churchill called him "the noblest Roman of them all."
This colorful collection of Marshal portraiture and memorabilia commemorates and humanizes this giant of a man, about whom comparatively little beyond his career achievements is known. The book will accompany an exhibit on Marshall that will open at the National Portrait Gallery in November 1997.
"He was certainly no flamboyant general, he was not a character, there were no pearl-handled revolvers or corncob pipes of crusty anecdotes to spice up the legend of Marshall. He never wrote a book to tell his story. He never ran for election to public office. He never sought popularity. He never exploited his fame. He never asked for recognition or favors. He was a man driven more than anything else by a sense of duty, by the powerful, overpowering obligation of service. To him, it was never George C. Marshall that was important; it was the task at hand." -- Colin Powell

A Woman in the Middle of History.......2004-03-26
Amelia Gayle Gorgas, a woman born in Alabama in 1826, witnesses and is a participant in some of the great parts of American history. She is one of two women on the speakers' platform at the dedication of the Washington Monument, a friend of Henry Clay and John Calhoun, married to the Confederate Chief of Ordinance, a resident of Richmond through the Civil War (including during the fall of Richmond to the national army), experiences Reconstrution in the deep South, a participant in the "rebuilding" of the University of Alabama after the war, and, finally, the mother of Dr. William Gorgas, the world famous physician.
As a student at the University of Alabama, I knew the library was named for Amelia Gayle Gorgas, but only recently have I had the chance to read this biography.
The book is very readable. It is a quick read and holds the reader's interest. I wish the author had included more information regarding the years after the war, especially the Reconstruction and its effect in central Alabama and on the University.
However, the author does a good job of presenting Ms. Gorgas, a woman who found herself in the middle of American history.

Book Description
The intricate personal relationships of a notable Alabama family.
Known respectively as the chief of the Confederate Ordnance Bureau and as the university librarian, Josiah and Amelia Gorgas were important members of the University of Alabama and regional communities. Their marriage spanned the Civil War and its aftermath and epitomized the Victorian concept of separate spheres for husband and wife. They were two strong personalities who deeply respected and complemented each other.
Love and Duty focuses on the couple's relationship as well as their relationships with other Gorgas family members. Because the large but close-knit family was highly literate and often separated, they produced an extraordinary quantity and quality of correspondence and related manuscripts that span three generations. Family members corresponded with each other almost daily. In these letters and in journals, they commented on contemporary events, gave advice, philosophized about life, death, love, marriage, parenting, war, and defeat. These thousands of documents provide a remarkable window into the private world of a 19th-century southern family. Wiggins examines Josiah’s and Amelia’s attitudes toward a vast range of topics, but most notably family, which was everything to the couple.
Sarah Woolfolk Wiggins is Professor Emerita of History at the University of Alabama and author/editor of The Scalawag in Alabama Politics, 1865-1881; From Civil War to Civil Rights, Alabama 1860-1960: An Anthology from "The Alabama Review"; and The Journals of Josiah Gorgas, 1857-1878.

Book Description
Copublished with The Miller Center of Public Affairs, "The Bush Presidency - Part II", discussed the impressive accomplishments at the beginning of the end of the presidency of George Bush, presenting these events for placement in history. This collection begins with an oral history by the secretary of defense under Bush, Richard Cheney, who led a team of authorities on foreign policy and defense who were at least the equal of any group from previous administrations. Hugh Sidey presents his view of the relationship between President Bush's upbringing as the son of a senator in a comfortable and socially privileged family and his actions as a politician and president. This collection provides insights through others who worked with President Bush as they assess his actions as a communicator, his performance as a domestic and international president and particularly his search for a grand strategy in foreign policy and his dealings with Russia, China, and NAFTA.
