    5 out of 5 stars Effective Leadership.......2007-02-23

This is an enlightening book on leadership by a world renowned leadership guru who is an internationally acclaimed writer, teacher and consultant. Adair explains the clear distinction between management and leadership and also highlights the fact that leaders are not born but made. Hence the challenge to organizations that even though they tend to be over-managed and under-led, the situation can be rectified through effective leadership development programmes.

Adair had an extensive military, business, and academic backgrounds which influenced gave him a lot of hands own experience and interest in leadership and how it can be effectively deployed for the benefit of an organisation. In this book, Adair illustrates how leaders can inspire their subordinates to achieve outstanding performance through effective management of the three variables namely the individual, the team and the task. Through having a clear shared vision, he explains how leaders can motivate their people to give off their best.

This is a well written book that is interesting to read in which Adair managed to combine provocative ideas and an accessible style.

    4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2004-06-04

Leadership guru John Adair talked with a bright young executive about leaders and the tenets of leadership, and recorded the conversations in this unique, philosophical book. Adair addresses tough questions about leadership and drills down beyond management and deep into human nature. He doesn't bother with leadership buzzwords, but instead discusses in meaningful terms the qualities that make a leader effective. People aren't born leaders, Adair says, they are made. Although the book is a bit too philosophical at times, the conversations between the author and the young executive are thought provoking, and the quotes peppered throughout the book are memorable. If you aspire to transform your management abilities into true leadership skills, we encourage you to sit down with the professor and his young protégé and enjoy the conversation.

3 out of 5 stars Review from Book Sleeve.......2003-08-26

The Inspirational Leader, a new classic from the pen of John Adair, reinforces his argument that leaders are not born but made. Taking the form of conversations between a young chief executive and the author, it explores the nature and practice of leadership. The key skills are revealed for anyone to adopt and use to inspire and encourage others. Though provoking and accessible.

This is an excellent introduction into binocular astronomy. It takes you from the beginnings of finding the first few basic constellations to mastering the low magnification skydome. There is also much on the many different types of binocular astronomy, such as variable star observations

          Product Description

A guidebook should start at the beginning of the trail. This is especially true when the pathway leads through unfamiliar territory. Right here, then, at the very outset of a starwalk which will wind all the way across the skies and through all the seasons of the year, I will assume that you have never passed this way before. For you, the comings and going of the planets are a total mystery. In coming chapters I will direct your eyes and binoculars to a number of locations where you'll find abundant proof that the sky is a busy place indeed, both day and night. Through dark filters you'll see sunspots larger than Earth. Sometimes you'll watch them grow from day to day as they move across the Sun. At other times you'll see them fade and disappear or even circumnavigate that turning, gaseous globe. Yes, your changeless skies are filled with action, with mighty movements that dwarf anything we know here on Earth. And you can spot these changes in the skies and turn your binoculars on them with ever-growing interest and ease when you become familiar with their habitat, the stars and constellations.

                        Book Description

Recent developments in supersymmetric field theory, string theory, and brane theory have been revolutionary. The main focus of the present volume is developments of M-theory and its applications to superstring theory, quantum gravity, and the theory of elementary particles. Topics included are D-branes, boundary states, and world volume solitons. Anti-De-Sitter quantum field theory is explained, emphasising the way it can enforce the holography principle, together with the relation to black hole physics and the way Branes provide the microscopic interpretation for the entropy of black holes. Developments in D-branes within type-I superstring and related theories are described. There are also possible phenomenological implications of superstring theory that would lie within the range of quantum gravity effects in the future generation of accelerators, around 1 TeV.

                          Book Description

The main focus of this book is the recent progress in the very active areas of superstring theory, quantum gravity and the theory of elementary particles. It covers topical problems in such domains as duality between gravity and gauge interactions, string field theory, tachyon condensation, non-commutative field theory, string cosmology and string phenomenology. Some presentations give an elementary introduction to their subject, while others are geared to the specialist.

So, for all the young girls growing up in the hood, let me take you back to how I grew up.

Chyna had a little trouble at home with her mother, and winds up being put out. She moves in with Tyreik who becomes her man, the love of her life wich becomes a relationship she just was not ready for. Immature when it came to handling the problems in her relationship, I found her behavior so so childish and found myself at times wanting to wring her neck but, thats what a good read does bring out your emotions, and Keisha has done that .

5 out of 5 stars Off The Hook.......2007-05-18

I loved this book, I was glued to the page from begining til the end. Chyna was a trip, I felt like I was on the emotional rollercoaster with her. The one thing I liked about her was that she made alot of mastikes, but she learned from them and got her Sh** togeather. She wasn't running around doing the some old stuff she matured and learned her lesson. Awesome read I would reccomend this book to all young women. You go Keisha Ervin do your thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Eh it was aight.......2007-05-11

The first few chapters of this book were hard to get through. Around chapter 4 when her mom puts her out I became more interested. I became even more interested when there was talk of sex with Tyreik. Just because the book needed spice.

Starting off in this piece (I haven't read anything else by her and probably won't), it's obvious that Ms. Ervin's writing skills are not that great. It jumped around too much, the dialogue was ummm I don't even know what to call it...painful will do, and character development was scarce. I didn't get why some family members were elaborated on and not in an effective manner and Pat was barely touched up on. I would have enjoyed some colorful stories about her. Matter of fact, Pat was the only person in the book I could envision as I read besides India.

This book lacked passion and I couldn't relate to the lead character. I am not that hood I guess. Besides that fact I do have people in my life who have lived in the hood. I don't think this book did any justice for telling a story based on the hood.

The only thing I could relate to is her relationship with her mom. The love issues with Tyreik I just couldn't get with. There was no real emotion. It was too much of the stuff on the surface. The same old lines, same old sex scenes, blah blah.

This book is recommended to go with Crackhead by Lisa Lennox. Go with Ms. Lennox instead. As I said, I ain't hood but I could still feel for the main character in crackhead and relate to her. I felt cheated when I started reading the book. I purchased on amazon reader reviews.

                          Mmph!! I was played.

                                Book Description

Theodore K. Rabb, one of the leading historians of early modern Europe, presents here the first full-scale biography of the influential English parliamentarian, colonizer, and religious thinker Sir Edwin Sandys (1561-1629). Rabb has studied Sandys's life and work for more than thirty years and shows that he played a vital role in the Jacobean Age's two most distinctive achievements: the early development of England's constitutional structure and the overseas expansion that began the British empire.

Sandys made his contributions, Rabb demonstrates, in the course of an extraordinarily diverse career. Sandys sat in the House of Commons from the 1580s to the mid-1620s, becoming its elder statesman and most influential voice on economic affairs, constitutional issues, and parliamentary procedure. He was a leader of the Virginia Company and the Bermuda Company, which established and settled these two early English colonies, and was also a director of the East India Company. And in an age beset by religious extremism, Sandys wrote a book on religious toleration that was widely read and discussed throughout Europe. reassessment of parliamentary politics on the eve of the English Civil War. Rabb shows that Sandys helped shape gentry positions, independent of Crown or Court, on major political issues, which in turn gave the House of Commons a new prominence in English affairs. This long-needed work will prompt a reexamination of vital aspects of the constitutional, colonial, and religious history of the Stuart period.

This is a stunning accomplishment. An entire age comes to life in this breathtaking biography of a rather obscure, but vital figure of the early modern period. Rabb's command of the material, and the beauty of his writing, make this essential reading for any history enthusaist.

                                    Book Description

Charleston, South Carolina, today enjoys a reputation as a destination city for cultural and heritage tourism. In A Golden Haze of Memory, Stephanie E. Yuhl looks back to the crucial period between 1920 and 1940, when local leaders developed Charleston's trademark image as "America's Most Historic City."

Eager to assert the national value of their regional cultural traditions and to situate Charleston as a bulwark against the chaos of modern America, these descendants of old-line families downplayed Confederate associations and emphasized the city's colonial and early national prominence. They created a vibrant network of individual artists, literary figures, and organizations--such as the all-white Society for the Preservation of Negro Spirituals--that nurtured architectural preservation, art, literature, and tourism while appropriating African American folk culture. In the process, they translated their selective and idiosyncratic personal, familial, and class memories into a collective identity for the city.

The Charleston this group built, Yuhl argues, presented a sanitized yet highly marketable version of the American past. Their efforts invited attention and praise from outsiders while protecting social hierarchies and preserving the political and economic power of whites. Through the example of this colorful southern city, Yuhl posits a larger critique about the use of heritage and demonstrates how something as intangible as the recalled past can be transformed into real political, economic, and social power.

5 out of 5 stars Selling the Memory.......2006-01-30

Stephanie Yuhl's study of Charleston is a great read, organized brilliantly with metaphors from theatre, and wonderfully well written. As a newcomer to Charleston but a long time South Carolinian, I was fascinated by her account of how Charleston has marketed itself. Her analysis of the literature of the Charleston Renaissance is extremely insightful as is her critique of Charleston's most well known painters. But perhaps most astute is her analysis of class and race relations. This book is definitely a prize winner!

5 out of 5 stars Southern Belle of a City.......2006-01-10

When you visit Charleston for the first time you are impressed and at times overcome by the sheer beauty of the place. The charismatic churches, cobblestone streets, and preserved homes seem almost movie set like in their ability to transport you to another time. Stephanie Yuhl's book very adeptly explores the phenomenon that is Charleston. This capitol of the south has been able to preserve itself like many European cities have done for centuries. An effort that is largely ignored in most other American urban areas. I wish I had "Golden Haze of Memory" when I first went to Charleston, as it explores how and why this Southern Belle of a city has sought urban renewal through preservation of a romanticized past.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating look at the marketing of a way of life.......2005-11-17

Stephanie Yuhl's book on the "making" of historic Charleston, South Carolina during the 1920s and 1930s -- the era of "Porgy and Bess" -- is fascinating. Yuhl deconstructs the mythmaking that artfully ignored some of the city's less heroic features and transmuted them into a placid, controversy-free image of a way of life at once locked in the past but also looking forward.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough and Thoughtful.......2005-08-02

Stephanie Yuhl's book is a great read for historians and layman alike. I loved it. As a native Carolinian(North), adopted Charlestonian, historian, and community college instructor, I found the book fascinating. The research and conclusions are thorough and thoughtful. I have used it as a reference for my own research on memory and cultural association. The sources and notes are extensive. Yuhl's book, as any good history, creates new questions for debate. Those people who consider themselves versed in the history of the city should read it and have an opinion. This book is "about Charleston" and "FOR Charleston". But it is also for the rest of us who visit and study the city, and care about its special place in the history of the South.

Meet the eccentric, eclectic family members of seventeen of America's finest writers in this dazzling, deeply moving collection of memories.

Take advice from Alice Hoffman's wise grandmother, Lillie Lulkin. Keep watch over lone children with Brent Staples. Share with Bob Shacochis and his wife the heartbreaking sadness of two people longing to have a child. You can also listen in as Chang-rae Lee and his mother speak their own language; carefully contemplate life through the eyes of Whitney Otto's beloved, irascible cat; discover if Marion Winik is really, truly related to either Charlie Chaplin or Jann Wenner; and barhop with a five-year-old Stuart Dybeck and his Polish Grandfather.

In joining this literary reunion, be prepared to discover your own sense of family history. Whether considering relations by blood, by marriage, by choice, or by chance, each writer here has something to share: secrets, desires, sorrows, and joys. And in this Family, you will find that the pleasure of reading is much more than relative.

Contributors include: Edwidge Danticat, Beverly Donofrio, Stuart Dybeck, Edward Hoagland, Alice Hoffman, bell hooks, Chang-rae Lee, Elizabeth McCracken, Whitney Otto, Jayne Anne Phillips, Bob Shacochis, Brent Staples, Deborah Tannen, Geoffrey Wolff, and Marion Winik.

5 out of 5 stars my thoughts about "family".......2002-04-19

I feel that the most important thing in any person's life should always be their family, I know mine always has and always will. There is nothing that I hold closer to my heart. This book, "Family: American Writers Remember Their Own," is for anyone who feels as I do that every relative, alive or passed, lives on forever, through memories, stories, pictures, and other belongings they left behind. Most people can recall family gatherings during which their relatives spend hours on end telling stories of a favorite deceased uncle, cousin, parent, and so on. Even if it is the same stories each gathering, they never get old or boring. They seem to be even more interesting or funny each and every time. The memory is an amazingly wonderful and powerful thing. It has the ability to bring passed on friends and family members back to life, to revive them. Such stories as are told in this remarkable book are our way to keep relatives and friends alive forever, to keep their teachings, stories, and beliefs as vivid and extraordinary as when first told or taught.
I cannot explain the extent to which I enjoyed and even cherished this collection of stories. It was assigned to me as part of the curriculum in my freshman English class at Florida State University. As with most books assigned in school, I dreaded it because I thought it would be boring and tedious to read it. However, once I read the first story assigned I was deeply moved and inspired. I truly grew to love the book and looked forward to reading the remaining stories. All of the stories are great. The tales seem to put you right into the story. They make you feel as if you are part of the family that is being talked about, as if it is your grandmother or father.
A couple of the stories stand out for me. One of them is "Advice from my Grandmother," by Alice Hoffman. The story is told in a truly unconventional style from the point of view of the author's grandmother. It recounts a series of random advices that the author was given by her cynical, caring grandmother. Most of them are simply hilarious. Yet, they also hold much truth. The grandmother tells Alice such things as, "Keep secrets well. Don't lie, but never tell the whole truth.", Don't kid yourself-nothing lasts forever.", and "All people are created equal-black, white, Chinese, Moroccan, it doesn't matter. Equal. Everyone." My personal favorite is, "Women can do anything men can do and more, but is this any reason to tell men the true story? Let them think what they think." Many of the advices given in this story are ones that I hold as very valid in my own life. I feel that there is something in this story for everyone.
Another great story is "My Famous Family," by Marion Wink, which tells the story of a twenty-year old young man who is in search for family relatives who were in one way or another famous. During his research he found that the founder and publisher of the "Rolling Stone" magazine was his cousin and that his great-grandfather was connected with Charlie Chaplin. I found this story very delightful. Most people, and I am no exception, can recall being a child and telling friends about their larger then life father or big brother. Making up stories about how they where heroes or famous in some way. Reading this story brought me back to those times.
"Family: American Writers Remember their own," is an exceptional book that I would recommend to anyone with a love for family. It will surely bring back forgotten memories in anyone who reads it. I am truly grateful that I was given the opportunity to come across such a wonderful collection of literature.

4 out of 5 stars For Inspiring Writers.......2002-04-19

When I first began to read this book, I thought of all the sweet memories these authors were having for their family. However, as I delved into the book, I realized it contained a more valuable resource. Each of these authors has a different writing style that conveys their thoughts in the best of ways. This is especially true with Alice Hoffman's "Advice from my Mother." She does not write in complete sentences, but instead, she writes whatever pops out of her mind at the time. It is unique, yet understandable. It is a very effective way to tell a story. Another story that I found very interesting was Jose Raul Bernardo's "Happy Blue Crabs." This author remembers the first time he cooked with his grandfather. The family is Cuban, and therefore Jose writes a few words in Spanish and informs his audience of how to pronounce them. This fond memory makes the reader feel exactly how Jose felt at the time, yet does not confuse them with the different language. These are just a few stories in the book that have a creative touch to them. Through this book, I have discovered new ways to write stories, but still sound interesting. I suggest this book to anyone interested in seeing different writing techniques, or even if you are just in the mood for touching family stories.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Family American Writers Remember Their Own.......2002-04-18

Family American Writers Remember Their Own is a book filled with stories of family members of various authors. These stories take you on a ride through an author's life and the people they have been surrounded by. Some of these stories will make you laugh and some will make you cry. Many of them you will be able to relate to as you remember your own family members and the time you spent with them. One of my favorite stories found in this book is Advice from My Grandmother by Alice Hoffman. This is not really a story, but rather several pieces of advice that a grandmother gives to her granddaughter. The thing I liked most about this story was that the grandmother provided a different way of looking at things causing you to evaluate various things in life. Another story that caught my attention was Happy Blue Crabs written by Jose Raul Bernardo. In this story the author remembers bonding with his grandfather as they are preparing a meal for a party and what he learned from him. This story was special to me because it made me remember the times when I would help my grandmother in the kitchen and how that would be our time to bond. Whether you are old or young Family American Writers Remember Their Own contains something for everyone.

                                            4 out of 5 stars A Substitute Family.......2002-04-18

I was assigned this book as part of the required reading for my college english class. I can honestly say that I exspected it to be awful. I was sure that the stories would be boring and completly impossible to read. Fortunatly, I was proven wrong very quickly. The uniqueness of each of the stories in this book is evidence of how differently people can experience their familys. As a college student I have recently moved out of my parents house and am experiencing a life without family for the first time. This book really made me appretiate them and all their quirks. The piece that touched me the most was Edwidge Danticat's "Papi". Being of Haitian desent myself I could recognize some things in her life that I had also experienced. This book was fascinating from cover to cover. I felt as if I got a glimpse into the most private aspects of the writers' hearts. I recommend this book to anyone who isn't able to be with their family for one reason or another.
