very timely delivery. product came just in time. Thank you.
Theory Good - Practical Not.......2006-03-13
Theoretically complete, but doesn't help practically. You can learn about adult learners, but how to develop an actual program... I don't know, it's not enough!
Excellent Source of Knowledge.......2006-03-10
This book is a great read for anyone who is interested in the programming aspect of any type of organization or educational setting. The author explains the somewhat complex programming process in a simplistic manner that novel and experienced program planners can comprehend. There are numerous workesheets and tips to guide you to presenting a great program. It is trull an excellent source of knowledge.
Perfect for my Progam Planning Class.......2006-02-25
This book provides a good model and checklist for program planning. We used it in my Program Planning class and it helped streamline the processess used to make new programs in my company.
Book review.......2005-09-23
This book is in logical order and is well written but it lacks visual aides and clearly labeled examples. For these reasons, it appears to be incomplete and hard to follow.
I will be happy to review adult education text book or manuscripts for a fee.

Book Description
In the past thirty years, the United States has made remarkable progress in reducing barriers in access to health care faced by racial and ethnic minority Americans. Most minority Americans born in the 1950s have vivid memories of "separate and unequal" health facilities. By the 1980s, overt and blatant barriers to care were uncommon. In spite of the progress achieved, recent studies continue to provide evidence that minority Americans experience differential access to health coverage and to some health procedures. To investigate these differentials, contributors to this volume were asked to examine the health care experiences of nonelderly Hispanics and African-Americans within a nationally representative data source: the 1987 National Medical Expenditure Survey. Through this effort, the authors document the extent to which barriers to access persist and provide insight on possible explanations for variations in access. This volume will provide policymakers, practitioners, and advocates with an objective base of important information to guide decision-making about health care policy.

This is the first investigation of one of the main interests of astronomy in Islamic civilization, namely, timekeeping by the sun and stars and the regulation of the astronomically-defined times of Muslim prayer. The study is based on over 500 medieval astronomical manuscripts first identified by the author, now preserved in libraries all over the world and originally from the entire Islamic world from the Maghrib to Central Asia and the Yemen. The materials presented provide new insights into the early development of the prayer ritual in Islam.
They also call into question the popular notion that religion could not inspire serious scientific activity. Only one of the hundreds of astronomical tables discussed here was known in medieval Europe, which is one reason why the entire corpus has remained unknown until the present. This second volume deals with astronomical instruments for timekeeping and other computing devices.

Book Description
Power ultrasound has been used for many years in two specific industrial areas: cleaning and plastic welding. Over the last ten years an increasing interest has been shown in its potential for use over a much wider range of chemistry and processing which has been grouped together under the general title of sonochemistry. Most of these uses depend on the generation of acoustic cavitation in liquid media but this text, while underlining the importance of the physics and mathematics of cavitation, mainly concentrates on applications of the technology.
After an introduction to the topic and some historical background to the uses of power ultrasound the general principles of acoustic cavitation are explored including some background physics, bubble dynamics and factors which influence cavitation. The remainder of the book incorporates a series of applications of sonochemistry which illustrate the types of physical and chemical effects of ultrasonically induced cavitation which will interest chemists and engineers alike. Amongst the major topics included are chemical synthesis, environmental protection and remediation of water, sewage and soils, polymer synthesis and processing, electrochemistry including both analytical and synthetic aspects and plating. The final chapter reviews the range of ultrasonic equipment available in the laboratory and the progress made towards the scale-up of sonochemistry.
The level is introductory to semi-advanced and no topic has been taken to a particularly specialist level since it is intended that this should be of general interest to readers with a scientific background.

Book Description
The principles of the modern physical theory of the effect of ultrasonic and other acoustic fields on chemical reactions are presented. Special attention is given to the influence of acoustic fields on chemical reactions in nonaqueous systems, catalytic processes and reactions involving macromolecules-processes which in recent years have been the object of intensive research. The presentation of the author's new electrical theory of cavitation phenomena and sonochemical reactions and sonoluminescence initiation makes this text particularly interesting and valuable.
Sonochemistry and cavitation is rapidly increasing in importance in modern chemistry as a result of many significant achievements made in recent years. These developments, as well as the fundamental concepts, are detailed and illustrated in this current and comprehensive text.

Book Description
"These exuberant stories, so startlingly fresh, so vigorous, and so wildly inventive, are a delightâ¦"-Alastair Reid
"Gombrowicz is one of the most original and gifted writers of the twentieth century: he belongs at the very summit, at the side of his kindred spirits, Kafka and Celine."-Louis Begley
"One of the greatest novelists of our century."-Milan Kundera
Stunningly original in both style and content, these stories are hilarious yet have an undercurrent of profound moral disquiet and horror when the respectable turns slowly but inexorably into the outrageous, conveying both the horrors of upper-class life and the deepest anguish of the human condition.
Customer Reviews:
indicative of Gombrowicz's later brilliance.......2007-07-09
I must take every opportunity I get to say that I love Gombrowicz. His writing is anti-climatic, childish, petty, ridiculous, sometimes disgusting, irrational... Some stories are great, some are just mediocre, a couple are boring and seem like practice sessions, but they all make me appreciate how fantastically preposterous Gombrowicz is.
Disappointing.......2006-11-12
I was disappointed by this book. I read the first few pages and was fascinated. The first story in the book had some great character pathology in it, telling the tale of an obsessed man from his point of view, but the rest of the book was literally nonsensical. It was like Dr. Seuss stories without the charming rhymes or colorful pictures if they had material unfit for children. The plots were even less well-developed than that lesser of Seuss's classics, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. This book is a bit like that New York art gallery that I once visited that had a jar of urine on exhibit as a work of art: the bizarre is being passed off as creative. The first story is worth reading, but the rest can be skipped in favor of the more intellectually vigorous Horton Hears a Who.
Like a fine punch; you might like other parts better.......2005-06-12
This 2004 translation from the Polish by Bill Johnston (Director of the Polish Studies Center at Indiana University) of the early stories of Witold Gombrowicz (1904-1969) begins with seven stories written between 1926 and 1932, which were originally published in 1933. The other stories appeared in a collection published in Krakow in 1957. After a scholarly edition appeared in 2002, as the first volume in a definitive edition of Gombrowicz's collected works, this fresh English translation based on that version is the most logical book to have for English readers interested in the literary beginnings of the great Polish novelist. The Afterword by Bill Johnston provides enough background, revealed by Gombrowicz in POLISH MEMORIES, to picture Gombrowicz already trying to write novels, but only pleased with some brief pieces that "gave birth to some scene that was truly crazy, removed from the (healthy) expectations of mediocre logic, and yet firmly rooted in its own separate logic." (p. 271).
Comedy is a poor excuse for claiming intellectual bondage to a thinker who died during an early stage in my lifetime, when I was totally preoccupied with other thinkers. He studied law at Warsaw University and philosophy in France long before I was born, but the sequence seems to be appropriate to the subject matter of these stories and to the nature of my outlook as well. Philosophy is a step in a peculiar direction for anyone who comes to the conclusion that justice is unlikely to be obtained in any matter in which the government has an interest, and this book starts with stories that make such an outlook something like an obsession. The psychological compulsion which determines the activities of Gombrowicz's characters tops any other meaning that readers might attempt to find in these stories.
The first, "Lawyer Kraykowski's Dancer," certainly captures the motivations which made me decide that I wanted to attend Harvard Law School in 1968 before receiving my draft notice, so that two years later I would have no trouble returning to the first year classes with "a letter of recommendation from your commanding officer in the military, or the warden of your prison" as the Dean of students put it in his address to entering students who were not entitled to draft deferments as first-year graduate students in 1968. As a prospective information looter and shooter, it seemed noble to me to allow the government to have the first few years in which I would be forming my opinions about government policies to put me wherever there was the greatest need for someone who had the intellectual capacity to observe what was going on and make a few guesses about what it was all about. Having learned the military manner of shouting, I am particularly struck by the humiliation suffered by the narrating character in his first encounter with the Lawyer Kraykowski:
"Was it you who did me the honor?" I asked in a tone that might have been ironic, perhaps even sinister, but since I suddenly came over weak, I said it too quietly. (pp. 3-4).
The plot has some cosmic moments, "as if all the forces in the world had gathered within me in a great frenzy" (p. 16), that people who are slaves to normal sensations might not recall.
The second story even has a military element:
Suddenly an artillery shell flew over, burst its sides, and exploded, blowing off both of Uhlan Kacperski's legs and tearing open his stomach; and Kacperski was at first confused, not grasping what had happened; then a moment later he also exploded, but in laughter; he was also bursting his sides, but with laughter!--holding his stomach, which was gushing blood like a fountain, he squealed and squealed in his comical, loud, hysterical, farcical high-pitched voice--for minutes on end! How infectious that laugh was! You have no idea what such an unexpected sound can be like on the field of battle. I barely managed to survive till the end of the war.--And when I returned home I realized, my ears were still ringing with this laughter, that everything by which I had lived until then had crumbled into dust; . . . (p. 31).
The third story, "A Premeditated Crime," has an unexpected:
"My husband," she said dryly, turning to me, "died last night."--What?! So he was dead? So that was it! (p. 39).
The first few hundred copies of Gombrowicz's stories included an explanation that in this story "the family loves the father, and he has not been murdered; and that in `Dinner at Countess Pavahoke's' the soup is not actually made from the runaway boy, but that the association is purely linguistic, and that `the point of the story is that the hunger and suffering of poor Bolek Cauliflower make the cauliflower-vegetable taste better to the aristocrats eating it.' " (pp. 274-275).
Readers of the novel FERDYDURKE might remember the stories "Philidor's Child Within" and "Philibert's Child Within," which are freshly translated into English in this book "in an atmosphere of nail-biting tension and with endless spontaneous rounds of thunderous applause." (p. 212).
The story "On the Kitchen Steps" is described as "written earlier but omitted from RECOLLECTIONS OF ADOLESCENCE out of consideration for the author's father, who Gombrowicz was afraid might read an allusion to himself in the story." (pp. 273-274).
With so much "Mucky tricks!" (p. 224) and "Hee hee hee, hey diddle diddle, hey diddle diddle!" (p. 225) near the beginning, imagining his father shouting such things in his sleep and having his mother tell his father "And then you shouted--it was awful--about some sort of hey diddle diddle" (p. 228), only to find out:
"Perhaps it was some recollections from my youth. You know, I'm already growing old, and as one ages one recalls one's youth, like soup one had once, thirty years ago." (p. 229).
So Gombrowicz wrote that in Polish once and finally had it published. This is great news.

Book Description
This powerful book presents a clear-eyed view of Winston Churchill, the workings of his historical imagination, and his successes and failures as a statesman.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting but uneven.......2006-12-05
This is another of the "short" Churchill books that have become popular over the last several years and are less than full blown biographies but more than just private musings of the author. This author has an engaging style and if you've read any of his previous books on this subject it should come as no surprise that this book is for the most part a positive portrayal. The book covers the several themes stated in the title with a varying degree, (in this reader's opinion), of success. The high points include insight into Churchill's role, (and motivation), as an historian, his role with Stalin and the division of post WWII Europe and the evolution of Churchill's relationship with Eisenhower, (maybe the best chapter in the book). Considering all that has been written on Churchill this reader found some "new" perspectives and food for thought in the above. On the downside, several of the other chapters - the rehashing of Gallipoli, Churchill's "wilderness" years do not provide much detail or insight and the last chapter - a journal entry written contemporaneously describing Churchill's funeral - was little more than filler to this reader. This disparity in the writing is unfortunately one of the salient points I took away from the book. That being said, (written), this book would not be the place to start with Churchill but it is a more than an adequate supplement.
Cheap and concise, but with problems........2006-02-27
I read this book here in Brazil, last year. It's cheap, concise and easy to understand. There's failures in this book?Yes.
At first, this book is biased.John Lukacs is a Churchill's fan.
To exemple, Mr. Churchill was a deeply eugenist. This book never talks about this.Another exemple is that in 1899, Winston Churchill spoke against Islam something like this:"How dreadfull are the curses which mohammedanism slays on its votaries...No stronger retrograde force exists in the world..."
The core of this book is to show Churchill after 1930.Even this, it fails sometimes. In chapter 4, Lukacs claims that Eisenhower was wrong about than USSR, and Churchill was right. In fact both were right. The american politics for Cold War, was basically the same, for every american president, since Truman,in 1945, to George Bush in 1991.
Churchill also was among the men who created Iraq.Churchill also put the last Iran's Xah in power. All of these Churchill's mistakes aren't in this book.
This is a fan's book, not an unbiased book.
A fan book on Churchill.......2006-01-28
What we have is a series of essays written about Churchill by a man who is both a highly regarded historian and a fan.
The last essay, I found quite moving where he discusses his time at Churchill funeral.
Yet the quality of these essays is not brilliant. In some ways they are repetitive with the same facts repeated again in another essay. Also the writer is also prone to exaggeration eg that the Germans could in June or July 1940 successfully invaded Britain.
I have read much on Churchill and found this book disappointing maybe as from a historian of the quality of John Lukacs, I expected more.
A Well-Written Synopsis, but Not a Great Work of Historical Writing.......2005-12-04
This was my first book by Lukacs and I am not a historical scholar. I picked it up to learn more about Churchill, and where this admirable leader was coming from. If you are looking for a primer or a thorough biography of W.S., this is not the book for you. However, if you are already familiar with his background, ancestry, and accomplishments in detail, this book serves as a kind of postmortem love letter.
It is certainly well-written--Lukacs is a talented writer who knows how to turn a phrase, as he exhibits in his diary entries describing Churchill's funeral. However, for all of W.S.'s greatness, Lukacs seems a doggedly loyal to the man and utterly resistant to any criticism. There is also noticeable resentment toward Roosevelt, Eisenhower, and other American officials, as the author apotheosizes Churchill above any and all other leaders during the most critical time in 20th century history. Regardless of the veracity of his position, I would recommend reading up on other perspectives to temper Lukacs' ode to Churchill's infallibility.
Overall, this is a brief and awe-inspiring read: a worthy eulogy for a worthy man that sometimes sparkles in prose, sometimes fizzles in excessive reverence.
The Ever-Lasting Appeal of Churchill.......2004-06-14
John Lukas clearly states at the beginning of his short book that his collection of essays is neither a biography nor a scholarly study of Winston Spencer Churchill (pg. xiii). Therefore, potential readers of Lukas' book who do not know anything about the key milestones in the life and career of Churchill should not start here. These readers can read books such as "Churchill a Life", "Churchill a Study in Greatness", "Clementine Churchill The Biography of a Marriage", "Winston and Clementine The Personal Letters of the Churchills" or "The Wit & Wisdom of Winston Churchill" to fill in the most glaring gaps in their knowledge of Churchill for that purpose.
Lukas writes to the attention of an audience who has an unquenchable thirst to know more and more about an individual who remains a source of inspiration to many men and women who stand in the way of barbarity and illiberalism around the world.
Although Lukas is generally sympathetic to Churchill, he is not blind to his major shortcomings: impetuosity, impatience, stubbornness and fancifulness (pg. 4, 154). Furthermore, Lukas reminds his audience in his essay "His Failures. His Critics" that Churchill had accumulated errors and mistakes that Churchill critics and detractors were attributing to his flawed character (pg. 129). For example, Churchill's futile fight against granting Dominion status to India from 1929 to 1935 was perhaps compatible with his imperialist credentials but certainly a clear blemish on his record. As a very experienced politician and knowledgeable historian at that time, Churchill should have known much better (pg. 14-15, 24, 135-136). Therefore, Lukas' collection of essays should not be construed as a shameful hagiography.
Furthermore, Lukas reminds his audience in "Churchill's historianship" and "Churchill the visionary" that Churchill was generally cognizant of the lessons that he could draw from past events to articulate his often-visionary policies while reflecting on and shaping history on his turn (pg. 1-18, 47). Churchill was not only a spectator, but also a key actor and play writer of human comedy (pg. 102).
Lukas also explores the ups and downs that Churchill had in his relationships with other history shapers such as Charles De Gaulle, Dwight Eisenhower, Adolf Hitler, Franklin Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin (pg. 19-20). Lukas convincingly explains that Churchill was facing an unpalatable choice between a Europe entirely ruled by Nazi Germany or half of Europe dominated by the Communists in case of allied victory (pg. 11, 27-28, 35). Churchill rightly first gave top priority to successfully fighting Hitler to death before trying in vain to stop Stalin in 1944-1945. Unlike some unimaginative people, Churchill understood right at the birth of the Soviet Union that the Bolsheviks should be stopped immediately before they grew into a gathering threat to the world. War-weary, the victors of WWI, unfortunately, gave only half-hearty support to the White Russians in their desperate fight against the Soviets (pg. 23). Once again, long-term pains were the reward for short-term gains.
Some (American) readers will not be very pleased while reading Lukas' unflattering portrait of Eisenhower and the men around him in "Churchill and Eisenhower." As mentioned above, Churchill was definitely right to try to thwart in 1944-1945 the apparently irresistible advance of the Soviets in Central and Eastern Europe. Churchill clearly understood that geography and territory mattered, not ideology (pg. 42). For that reason, the British army met the Russians east of the entry to the Danish peninsula at the request of Churchill in 1945 (pg. 45). Unfortunately, the American leadership did not want to hear anything about it at that time (pg. 35-40, 46). Some European regions such as former East Germany and the Czech Republic should have been eventually spared the murderous and inefficient rule of the former Soviet Union (pg. 43). The Greeks should continue to be very thankful to Churchill for saving them from a communist tyranny (pg. 41, 48).
In his famous, visionary Iron Curtain speech in 1946, Churchill expressed his concern with the murderous, inefficient embrace of Communism in the European regions under Stalin's control. American reception of this historic speech was at best lukewarm (pg. 47). Churchill knew better and was predicting at the end of 1952 that time was not on the side of Communism (pg. 48, 79).
After the death of Stalin in 1953, Churchill, Prime Minister again, could not convince his friend Eisenhower, who in the meantime became President of the U.S.A., of finding some kind of accommodation with the new Soviet leadership (pg. 70, 73-74). Subsequent events proved that Eisenhower was right when he saw no difference after Stalin was gone (pg. 71, 77). Contrary to what Lukas thinks, Eisenhower should not be described as a leader without any vision under the nefarious influence of men such as John Foster Dulles (pg. 79-80). Many western leaders shared Eisenhower's views on this subject (pg. 81-82). The former Soviet Union was not yet in sufficient decline in the early 1950s to negotiate in a position of force with it as world leaders such as President Ronald Reagan and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher understood very well in the 1980s.

Book Description
Winston Churchill - his name is still revered by leading figures throughout the world, and his reputation as a wartime leader remains unblemished. He was the moving force behind the allied victory in WWII - but how did he become the indispensable man, the greatest statesman of the 20th century? Rob Neillands show why no 21st century reader can fully understand the phenomenon that was Churchill without tracing the arc of his brilliant career.
Who Churchill was, what he did and why he is so respected is increasingly unknown to recent generations. The man himself, together with the times and pressures that formed him, seem ever more remote from the present time. This book shows not just what Churchill accomplished, but how he prepared himself for greatness on the world stage, moving from soldier to writer to politician to Britain's greatest Prime Minister. Foreword by Dr. Robert Berlin, professor of strategy and tactics at the US Army Command and Staff College at Leavenworth, Kansas, and one of America's leading WWII scholars.
Note: Previously published in hardcover as Winston Churchill: Statesman of the Century.

Phenomenal Book!.......2005-11-11
I picked up this short biography of Churchill and found it very impressive. Even for students of Churchill, there is a lot of fascinating information, and the author makes a convincing case that he was indeed the statesman of the century. A great addition to my Churchill bookshelf!

Customer Reviews:
The real Churchill you will not see here.......2004-09-22
Go read David Irving's biography instead, meticulously researched and you can read it online free.
Very Satisfied!.......2004-08-18
I purchased this book because I needed to do a research paper which included a short biography on Churchill. This book is very concise and proved to be an asset to my paper. The biographies by Gilbert or Jenkins are very lengthy and it is difficult to sum them up and take out the main points. I am glad I found this book by Robin H Neillands.
Churchill the valiant ,intrepid, leader of freedom.......2004-03-27
Beautifully simply profoundly written book .A must reading for all laymen all good people interested in a champion of freedom.

Book Description
The most important Japanese politician of the late twentieth century!
- Tanaka, a corrupt populist politician from a humble background, helped shape Japanese politics of the period.
- Throws light on the modern history of Japan and Postwar Japanese politics.
- A brand new title in the very popular Profiles in Power series.
Tanaka is indisputably "the most important Japanese politician of the late twentieth century". A populist politician from a very humble background in a poor part of the country, he had a popular appeal for the Japanese masses that was unsurpassed by rival and better-connected politicians. More importantly still, he helped shape the political climate of modern Japan, particularly in terms of his corruption and sinister connections with business and organized crime. He does in that sense, encapsulate an era. His career both as an embodiment of his times but also as a shaper of them illuminates the peculiar character of Japanese politics in his time. Tanaka the new title in the Profiles in Power series, is not a biography, though inevitably it contains much biographical material, it instead analyzes the major features, achievements and failures of Tanaka's career.

Customer Reviews:
A must read for all from the World War II generation........2000-01-13
As one who lost my father in WWII, this was a difficult book to read because it triggered a flood of emotions that had been suppressed for many years. It should be required reading for all military officers and world leaders. Those of us labeled war babies or war orphans will be forever grateful to Ann Mix for bringing us together and our stories to light.
Very emotional side of WWII never before told........1998-05-14
Because I lost my father in WWII, Lost in the Victory, had a very personal meaning for me. I couldn't put it down once I started reading it. The personal stories of what happened to several of the orphans once the war ended brought back memories that were buried for years. A truly touching book. Thanks Ann
A sobering reality of how war affects children left behind........1998-05-13
A well documented reminder of how families that lose a parent in a war are permanently affected.
A powerful discovery of a hidden cost of war........1998-04-27
So few members of my generation, born in the 1960's, have been introduced to the full depth of a war's reach. Often our understanding is derived generally from the broadest high school or college survey class; or worse, Hollywood. So it is quite sobering that a member of the "me" generation receives the sharpest of slaps across the face.
As a collection of essays and interviews of American World War Two orphans, LOST IN THE VICTORY paints a broad and intense picture of a narrow and lonely subject. With each chapter, the sense of loss grows; not just the loss of a fine American to battle, but the loss of a child's identity.
However, the range of emotions is broad. While sad and desperate at times, the book also brims with pride and faith.
For a Memorial Day tribute, there could be no better slap of reality than LOST IN THE VICTORY.
